Chapter I: The Gathering

Gavner tossed a look over his shoulder as he sneaked through the extremely late Radasanth night. He was extra careful to avoid the soldiers who were patrolling the area. It was difficult to understand the ins and outs of the environment he was in, because Gavner tended to overanalyze everything. He tried to plot out every single patrol route of the guards, tried to plot out the perfect time to sneak around, yet anything could happen at any time.

“For Christmas,” he mumbled to himself, “it is all worth it to celebrate Christmas with those whom I love.”

Gavner sneaked down an alley and across a street, barely avoiding one of the soldiers. Radasanth was under a strict curfew for all residents and guests of the city. Something about an oppressive governmental system with corrupt viceroys. The ins and outs of Coronian politics always baffled Gavner, and he had trouble understanding it. He never understood it up to this point, and more than likely he would never understand, so there was no sense in trying to now. Gavner had many fond memories of this place. Radasanth was the city that not only the Ixian Knights often protected, but it was also the place where he would converge with other knights of his team, and fellowship. They would often go to the citadel and battle it out, have tournaments, and enjoy beverages in the many taverns and marketplaces.

One time they actually got caught by solders when they were sneaking around past curfew. If Jensen had not arrived just in time to free them from the jails and kill all of the witnesses, the Knights’ wetwork team would have been completely exposed to the public. After that they never heard the end of it from Jensen. He and Sei were rather cross at their foolishness and recklessness, but they couldn’t help the way that they were. They were the wetwork team. They feared nothing at all. It takes a certain type of person to be on the Ixian wetwork team, and frankly, not giving a care in the world was a key component. Consequences were important, but Ixian assassins couldn’t be held back by the fear of them. They had to act according to what they knew had to be done, and deal with the consequences later. Such philosophy was difficult to those who were inhibited by circumstances and consequences for their entire life, but it was easy to adopt for the assassins. They didn’t have time to completely contemplate it, they just did as they needed to.

And so was the case as Gavner ducked and slunk his way through the shadows of Radasanth until finally, he came to the end of the street and saw his destination. Now, any normal human or creature in such darkness could not make out what the sign said, but with his supernatural vampric sight, Gavner could see, as plain as if it was in daylight, a large sign that read “The Rusty Wheel.” He had arrived at the convergence.

Drake looked down at the piece of paper in his hand as he sat at a table in the corner of a pub.

My Dearest Mr. Drake, it said in beautiful, formal handwriting with black sticky ink,

You are needed for an adventure. Your valuable skill sets and knowledge of not only the lands and flora of the world, but also of supernatural occurrences such as demons, angels, and superterrestreal and divine beings will be of great use to us on this quest.

Along the way, great feats of strength and tests of courage you will undergo; such demanding aspects will be required of you; however, I know that it is in your nature as a person to accept these demands as challenges. You are not one to stray or flee from a challenge.

Indeed there will be many demands- and sacrifices, you will have to make- however; it goes without saying that there will be many rewards as well. Fellowship, camaraderie, connections, adventure, treasure, and much more are all on the line, as well as retrieving a stolen birthright from a dear friend of ours.

Should you choose to accept the quest charged upon you, meet at the convergence point, The Rusty Wheel, in Eastern Radasanth on the eve of the Descending Summer’s conclusion, two days prior to the Ascending Winter’s solstice.

I do hope that all is well. Godspeed, and safe travels.

Sincerely,
G-

Gavner knew that Drake would not hesitate to accept the quest, and the young half-angel could sense that in the vampire’s tone, as he wished “Godspeed, and safe travels.” The truth was that Drake would do nearly anything for his friends- Gavner, Koli, and Black Shadow being the greatest of which. It broke Drake’s heart- he came to this city in a broke down ship. It had been nearly 4 months with no calls or charges for quests and now he was here, looking mildly attractive in a pub’s bar. He just couldn’t stop thinking of all the adventures he had gone on, and how he so dearly missed his friends. No, he couldn’t stop. Ever since the last adventures, he had been wandering- searching for something more. It seemed that all he had was his friends. All throughout his years in this world, he had been a wanderer, never knowing where to belong. He never had a place to call home, nor did he ever have a family. He had undergone a painful, lonely past, but yet he was not hardened at all. He was still the kind, soft, empathetic angel that he had always been. No, it was when he was with his friends that he felt at home. It was when he was with his friends that he felt he had a family. But his friends never had time for him, they were all such busy people. Who could blame them? Saving the world all the time, there would hardly be time for friends. Either way, Drake was still excited. He leaned forward and rubbed his palms in anticipation of another gathering- of another reunion with his family.

Koli
09-04-2017, 07:51 PM
Koli walked through the busy marketplace in Radasanth. It was a brilliant, beautiful sunny day, and the monk had his hood drawn over his head, not only to provide a shield from the sun, but also to shield his branded face. His kind was not welcome in parts like these- places suffocated with sin and people who care to do none other than participate in “the rat race.”

But that was what it all was, honestly. Everybody rushing from place to place, a whole community focused on nothing but money, greed, self satisfaction, and survival- all of which were subject to the political corruption and desecration of values and morality in humanity. Koli was not welcome here, nor did he belong here. He took an oath to protect the innocent, and these were not the innocent. Radasanth reminded him, in fact, of the ancient city of Granumn and Teturis. It was a city plagued with so much evil and sin that the creator itself wiped the city from the face of the earth. A similar story was that of the Tular Planes, in which there was so much evil and desecration of the good and of the innocent in the world that it had to be destroyed. Since then all civilizations in that area have been reset and circumstances have been made so that no major civilization could ever thrive there once more.

“Fresh fish!”

“How about some nice pecans?”

“Bread from the finest bakery in Corone!”

Suddenly a man impeded Koli’s path. He was tall with dark hair and a handsome complexion. Clad in shining boots, leather armor, and a sword on his hip, he struck a valiant pose and seemed to gleam in the sunlight with every aspect of perfection.

“Say man, have you given any thought to the Corone Guard?” he said, “If you want to learn how to fight, how to be a noble warrior, and how to serve a cause worthy of serving, then this is the place for you. Honor, courage, and gallantry are what we stand for, and you will not find a better cause to serve in the land. So what do you say? Will you make a man out of yourself yet?”

Koli stared back at the man and read into his being. Here was a man, masking something deep within with the promise of masculinity. He believed if he could be the best at something, then he could find meaning in his life. Granted, this man was the icon for every soldier- he was probably a womanizer, and a valiant fighter, and loyal to his cause- but he was still caught in the rat race. This man did not understand that in order to find value in his life, he had to look within. In order to serve something with meaning, he had to serve where his convictions lied, and adhere to that.

Koli stepped aside and continued through the crowd until he reached the secluded road.

The Rusty Wheel, he thought, This is my stop.

Gavner waited for the current guard to reach the end of the dark street before he crept across the road himself and entered the pub. As soon as he stepped foot into the low lit bar, he felt at home. The low, familiar murmur of Gavner’s old hangout came as a comfort to his ears. The Rusty Wheel was one of the few pubs that held, and encouraged, a secret “night life,” as they called it. The place was open to travelers, adventurers, and night owls who had no fear of the curfew and could safely sneak past the Radasanth Guard.

Memories of planning assassination missions, and having fun swapping combat stories flooded Gavner’s mind once more. This was only a pub for planning missions and enjoying leisure time for the Ixian Wetwork team. There were other pubs that were more suited for victories, and celebration, but this was a place of sincerity and preparation.

Scanning the crowd, the creature of the night saw two familiar faces, whom he eagerly approached. He, Drake, and Koli had been through so much together that it was hard not to smile at the thought or presence of them. So many fond memories of adventure and battle, joy and laughter, failures and pain, yet in the end they always prevailed and were deemed victorious. He reached their wooden table and sat down in one of the stiff chairs.

Sitting also at the wooden structure was what looked like a teenage boy with dirty blonde hair. He was garbed in a white shirt drawn together in the center with grey string. Black pants and leather boots garbed his lower body, and five shining throwing stars were strapped to his belt. This was Drake. He was a half angel, and he knew his way around the world. He also had friends in high places; quite literally to be frank. Angels from the Ninefold Celestial Hierarchy were among his best angelic friends.

Across from Drake sat a man garbed in white with a hood drawn over his face. Gavner could see through it though. His round, face and white irises humbly observed his surroundings, as the priest was ready to react at any moment. On the very center of his face was branded a red cross, which spread on his forehead, his nose, and down onto his lips. They were all in a dimly lantern lit tavern that had all furnishings roughly cut from wood, and large beams supporting the building throughout the room. The bartender who kept the finest alcohols was a fighter, and he knew how to take down even the strongest of warriors.

Just then the door to the pub opened, and a man with silver hair and glowing purple irises walked in. He was tall with a clear cut jaw and high cheekbones. Garbed in a long black traveling cloak with a cape, this man was visibly strong, fast, and a paragon of what seemed like nobility. He commanded respect, and yet there was still something graceful about the way he did it. This creature was named Mavrik.

Although it was still daytime, and Drake knew that Gavner would not arrive until nightfall, the half angel was still excited for his friends to arrive. He hoped that Koli and Black Shadow would arrive too, and eager anticipation filled him every time he thought of it. For some reason the bar was rather empty- maybe people did not come to pubs this early in the day during the week in Radasanth. Perhaps everybody was too busy with work. The bar tender was friendly, however, and Drake happily waited, being content with the mere knowing that he was going to soon see his friends once more.

After a few hours of waiting and thinking to himself, the door opened, and a man in a white hood entered. Drake recognized that hood, and that tattoo on the man’s face instantly- it was Koli! Drake jumped up and hurried over to greet the man before he could remember that they were supposed to be prudent and civilized in this area. The half angel still could not understand why greeting those acquaintances that one knew personally was not considered “civilized,” but nonetheless he shook his good friend’s hand and motioned for him to take a seat at the table. Drake was so happy that he was speechless for the first few minutes.

“Did Gavner ask you here?” he asked the priest who nodded his head. Koil did not ever talk. He was like a dead silent monk. “He didn’t ask me to come, he actually ‘charged me on this fancy quest,’” Drake said. “Here, take a look at this!”

Drake procured his invitation from his vampire friend and set it on the table. Koli scrutinized the paper, and then pulled out his own. It read along the same lines, but it was worded differently.

Dear Priest Koli,

I am going on a quest which I cannot venture through without the assistance of you. I am hereby soliciting your part in accomplishing a complicated, daunting, yet rewarding task. Should you choose to accept, your presence will be greatly appreciated.

It is once more nearing the season in which joy must be spread through the world in the form of rash, and excessive deeds. Such adventure we will embark upon will bring many trials, and problems that we must overcome, and problems that I cannot face alone.

In light of such circumstances, I am embarking upon a quest which a company of multiple as opposed to one will be the most favorable. I cannot guarantee anybody’s safety, nor can I guarantee success, but I can guarantee eternal friendship, and unwavering gratitude.

Will you accept this charge? Will you embark on a quest of love to bring joy to he whom we care for? If you should choose to accept, converge with me on the Eve of the Descending Summer’s Conclusion, and we will determine the details and terms of this journey.

Safe travels, and Godspeed.

Sincerely,
G-

Drake was excited. Gavner was coming! And when he arrived, they were in for an adventure.

Koli

Koli took one more look around at the world that he was so loathing of before he pushed open the door to The Rusty Wheel. Koli had only been in these parts once. The rich, clean cobblestone roads of Radasanth spoke a lot of the society itself. The only way that sanitation and cleanliness is forced upon a society is from political figures, which is a tell tale sign of oppression. The brilliantly constructed, zoned buildings, and the bright and festive adornments on not only the personal, but also the public buildings such as the town hall, and the citadel were extremely lavish with seasonal decorations such as flowers and lush, ripe fruits from the harvest. Koli assumed that all of this was a mandated adornment. The brilliant blue sky blazed overhead as the ex-priest stepped to the door of the pub. He took a deep breath, and entered.

“Koli!” The priest heard from a corner of the lonely, deserted place. “You’re here too! I’m so glad!”

Koli looked to the corner of the room and noticed the familiar figure of boy in his very late teens, who had dirty blonde hair, and was dressed like that of an esquire. He was rushing Koli’s way, and the monk could tell that he was going to hug him. Koli disliked such physical contact, and so he sharply stuck out his hand for the boy to shake. Drake was a half angel, but he was too caught up in the family and fellowship aspect of gatherings. The boy shook the monk’s hand very vigorously and put his arm around him, leading the man back to the table. Koli could not help but to break a smile. The enthusiasm of Drake was, although at times excessive, always very uplifting and fun.

Koli sat down at the table and looked smugly at Drake. This was the monk’s favorite part of the night. Drake always wanted to talk Koli’s ear off, but Koli did not ever speak- and Drake knew that. It was interesting how Drake found ways to get Koli to communicate with him.

“Koli, blink twice if you had a good trip!” Drake said. Koli stared back with no reply because, in fact, he did not have a good trip. Drake looked puzzled after a few seconds. Koli loved being frank with Drake, because he always was so easily confused.

“Why did you not have a good trip?” Drake asked puzzledly. Koli raised an eyebrow at his half angel friend. “A rough voyage?” Koli gave Drake a look. “Burglars?” Koli cocked his head. “Disease?” Koli sighed and looked away out of the corner of his eye. “Ohhhhh! Monster attacks!”

That was the one. Koli gave a smirk and turned his eyes ice blue for a split second. Drake shivered all over. “Did Gavner invite you here too?” the half angel asked. “He gave me this invitation.”

Koli pulled out his own and set it on the table for Drake to enjoy. They waited for Gavner to arrive as Drake tried to communicate with the priest some more

“Mavrik!” Gavner said across the room in a hearty, happy tone.

“Gavner!” The newcomer answered, “It’s so good to see you, old friend!”

“Granted,” Gavner said, “it has only been several months, but it feels like a very long time!”

The two friends came together and shared a brotherly embrace. Mavrik was a vampire from Gavner’s clan, and their meeting seemed more than that of happenstance when they had first encountered each other. Mavrik was actually in the special forces of Clan Anoterish, meaning that he was a spy. Anoterish was a clan with royal vampric blood, meaning that they had exponential perks over all the others. Nearly all vampires had incredible strength, which was given to them by their vampire cells, but normal vampires peaked in strength and speed after about 200 years of life. Normal vampires were also limited to about one thousand years, and aged at one tenth the rate of a normal human. The only normal vampires who deviated from these limits of life were the princes of each clan. Each vampire clan had members, generals, and war princes. The vampire War Princes were the ones who made every decision and important, and a special bloodline was passed among them. These princes had no limits to how strong they could become.

Anoterish was different, however, and superior in many ways. According to legend, their ancestral council of war princes agreed to help the head arcangel of the heavens fight ten legions of demons who were storming the gates of heaven. For this, the angel gave the vampire princes something called royal blood which they shared with their whole clan. From that day on, everybody in Clan Anoterish had no limit to how strong they could become, they aged one year for every twenty that they lived, and they would live until they were about two thousand years old. The princes, however, were given a very special bloodline indeed. They were granted so called everlasting life, as they would live until they were killed. They were immune to disease, their regeneration abilities were incredible, and they could undergo incomprehensible feats of strength.
Gavner met his friend Mavrik when he found out that the other clans in the vicinity were forming factions against Anoterish as he was spying on the other clans. He would have returned safely with the news, but he was discovered upon his escaping the enemy’s headquarters. By the time he reported the affairs to his clan, Anoterish was surrounded. Gavner and Mavrik were among those who managed to escape to a neighboring clan. Mavrik was separated from the special forces, and he was reduced to a member. The two traveled to other clans, fostering relations and rallying allies who would help them take back their homeland.

“Please, sit down!” Gavner said motioning to the table. “Everybody seems to be here now,” the vampire general said to the group.
“We all know why I have called us here, I assume,” Gavner said, “The spirit of Christmas!”

drake

“Yes!” Drake said excitedly, and the two vampric guests winced. Granted, Drake had said that a little louder than he had anticipated, and he had forgotten that the vampires had very sensitive hearing. “Oh, sorry…” Drake just got so excited every time that Christmas came around. Last year they had a big party where Gavner tried to get as many of the world’s major criminals and enemies all together to share a joyful evening, setting aside all of their hatred for each other for just one night. Needless to say, that did not end all that well. The year before that, Gavner had first found out about the concept of “Christmas,” and decided that he needed to get a present for his best friend, Black Shadow.

But Gavner did not stop at a mere “Merry Christmas,” and a quiver of arrows. No, he solicited Koli and Drake to go with him to find all of the materials to make a Bladesinger Bow, the most powerful ranged weapon, and quite possibly the most powerful weapon on all of Althanas. That year, the meeting place was the oddest in existence, a place called Istraloth, which they were the first people to set foot on the tropical mountain continent. They later found that it was a haven for dragons, and they barely escaped undetected. While they were there, they discovered many mysteries on the uninhabited place, but that was not their goal destination, so they set sail for the Red Forest in Raiaera. When they made it, they were separated, and many perils they encountered. Gavner almost died, Drake was almost killed, and if it was not for Koli, they would not be here today.

So one of the main components for the bow was a branch from one of the oldest, most mature Ulder redwood trees that naturally grew a core of Liviol. They got the branch and barely escaped with their lives. After they escaped, they tried to find refuge in Eluriand, where they were tormented by the king of hell himself. They then found themselves in the midst of a dimensional tear where demons were flooding the world. Drake, Koli, and Gavner found the tear and defeated the demon lord, the commander of the providence, and they took an arrow from him as a trophy. Thus, they made the bow, saved the city, and brought Christmas to Gavner’s best friend Black Shadow.

Drake was ecstatic to see what Gavner had in store for this year’s Christmas. What he was certain of though, was that an adventure was at hand, which Drake was always willing to undergo. He could sit and daydream about adventures all day, but he never tried to go on any because adventures by himself were lonesome. What was the use of going on one if it was going to be lonely? What was the purpose of going on an adventure if he had no one to share it with him?

“So Gavner,” Drake said, “What’s in store this year?”

Koli
09-04-2017, 07:53 PM
Koli studied Gavner carefully. Drake, Gavner, and Black Shadow had been through many experiences together, the paramount being the whole “Christmas” fiasco two years ago. Gavner had to obtain the best physical present for his friend Black Shadow on the whole world that he was willing to go to the ends of the world to get it. Gavner drafted Drake and Koli, who were more than willing to help their friend out, but the quest nearly killed them multiple times. But, despite their poor past experience, Koli was still willing to accompany his friend on this journey. The priest looked at Gavner, and looked at Gavner’s friend. Koli didn’t’ make a judgement about this man though.

Koli never had a “Christmas,” where he came from, as it did not exist; however, the brotherhood, which was the organization that raised him and made him a priest, did celebrate a day to bring joy to the world. The soft murmur of the tavern brought Koli back to his first Daniel’s day…

Soft white light gently hugged the landscape, flowing through Koli’s dormitory window and bathing his quarters. The young monk stared out the window at the falling snow as it glided down from the sky and landed soundlessly on the landscape. It was the eve of The Apex of the Ascending Winter, and there were many preparations to be made. The following day was Daniel’s day, and Abbas Amo wanted lots of toys and goodies ready to give to the local children. Daniel’s day originated from a wandering holy man named Locus, who brought wealth and peace to continental Dheathain with the hopes that people would spread happiness with their newfound wealth. But human nature does not go away with the good intentions and will of one man, and the powerful rulers seized the wealth of the less fortunate, and formed factions to rule the whole land mass. But shortly afterward, Locus came to the town that the brotherhood was in with a wounded and dying son. At the time, it was a monastery, and Locus asked the monks to save the life of his son, and he would do anything for them.

The friars saved Daniel, and charged his father nothing in return, and so Locus gave to the mission his only son to become a monk. Locus said that his son would be a great man of strong integrity and morals, and he would bring safety to the surrounding areas. Daniel grew up to become not only a monk, but the head priest of the entire monastery. It was there that he instituted that the missionary become a brotherhood instead. Daniel was well respected, and his idea was put into practice. It was there that Daniel instituted every monk become adept at martial arts and the ways of willpower and heart. He emphasized putting others before oneself, and revolutionized the brotherhood. They now stood for serving others, and keeping the peace of the world. Daniels day celebrated giving joy.

“Wait,” Mavrik said, “what’s Christmas?”

Gavner’s eyes widened, as he was a bit taken aback, but then he remembered that Christmas was not a widely spread holiday in Althanas. “Did I not tell you about Christmas before?” He asked.

“No, I’m afraid you did not,” Mavrik replied with a smile. “But I would most definitely like to find out!”

“Christmas,” Gavner said, “Is a very important tradition that was brought to me by a, er, important companion of mine.”

“Yes,” Mavrik said, nodding, “Go on.”

“Yes yes,” Gavner said, “It is all about love, joy, and making people happy.” Gavner continued. “On the day of Christmas, which is in the midst of the ascending and descending winter, friends will all come together for a celebration, and a time in which feasting, fellowship, and the exchanging of gifts takes place.”

“Now this is interesting,” Mavrik said, “We have never had anything like this before.”

“Indeed,” Gavenr said, “The exchanging of gifts is the most important part. Essentially, that is what Christmas is. It is the most quintessential aspect that gives Christmas its essence.”

“I see,” Said Mavrik, “But why?” He asked. “What purpose does converging and exchanging objects and giving things away have?”

“It is a time to show your friends that you love them,” Gavner said, “It is a day on which you can make them feel special and all warm and fuzzy on the inside.”

“But why this sudden change of heart?” Mavrik asked, “As I said, the clan has never hosted anything like this before.”

“I had the same view as you did when I first heard of Christmas. But trust me, my friend, you will warm up to it!” Gavner replied. “Now, who is up for some refreshments and fun?”

Gavner went to the bar tender and flashed his sharp, black teeth in a smile. “Hello, sir,” Gavner said in a friendly tone, “Two ales, a bottle of your finest port, and a glass of milk please.”

Gavner returned to his friend telling old war stories of Gavner and him to Koli and Drake. Gavner gave Mavrik the ale, Koli the bottle of port, and Drake the milk as he sat down and began to listen.

“Okay,” Said Mavrik, “This one time, Gavner was coming back from the training hall with his shirt off, and Gavner has always been a ladies man-“

“Oh, you are not telling them about that one event with Arrya, are you?” Gavner asked heavily with a big grin.

“Oh yeah,” Mavrik said, “You better believe that I am!”
Everybody was smiling and looking around as they swapped stories, simply enjoying each other’s company. Gavner bought them all another round of drinks, milk for Drake of course, and they all talked late into the night.

“So back in the Ascending Summer of 1802,” Mavrik was recounting, “Gavner was merely a cub, which is what we call extremely young vampires- he was just a baby at that time,” Mavrik poked.

Gavner smiled. This was going to be a long, fun night.

Drake was ecstatic when Mavrik, Gavner’s friend began to tell stories. He had always loved listening to people and what they had to say.

“So this one time,” Mavrik was saying, “Gavner and I were sitting at the Clan Hall meeting, and naturally we were sitting together. Gavner couldn’t stop talking to me about that cute dane that he saw back in Raiaera. She was a blonde,” He said, “Gavner has a thing for blondes.”

“Then he would love my friend Seraphina!” Drake said, “She is so beautiful.”

“Well what race?” Mavrik asked, “Because he only likes elves and humanoids.”

“She is an angel,” Drake said, “One of the Seraphim actually.”

“Ooh, you hear that buddy?” Mavrik jested at Gavner, “Drake can hook you up with an angel!”

“Naaah,” Drake said with a smirk, “You aren’t her type.”

“Well that’s not going to stop him!” Mavrik laughed.

“Oh! Like that one time in Dheathain, when he made an advance on that girl in Davensport who shut you down! Remember that, Gavner?” Drake said. Gavner’s face turned deep red and he grunted in compliance.

“Gavner never really has many failures in that category,” Mavrik said, “But he is so used to being able to swoon any woman that he wants, that he becomes such a sore loser. One time, he followed a girl back to her house and continued to persist. She actually called the Corone Guard on him.”

“Woah,” Drake marveled, “What happened?”

“I took them all on, six on one,” Gavner said with a smirk.

“And boy he whipped them all,” Mavrik marveled as well, “He didn’t even need any help from me.”

“And did that scare her, or did she fall into his arms knowing that he could kill her if he wanted to?” Drake mused.

“Well let’s just say that after six guards, still being a cub, he was too tired to persist with her, so he admitted defeat on that one.” Mavrik said.

“I still wonder if she would have been a good kisser,” Gavner said with a whimsical smile before taking a big swig of his ale. “But that was back in my young, and wild years. I have a very narrow taste in women now.”

“Yeah, only queens,” Mavrik said. “Only royalty will suffice.”

“Oh, be quiet,” Gavner said with a smirk. “That is a story for another time.”

“Yeah,” Said Drake, “Since we will be together for- hey, how long will we be together?”

“I have not the slightest clue how long this journey will take,” Said Gavner, “But I know that it is going to be a lot longer than we are used to.”

“But it couldn’t be longer than that time we were held up in that mineshaft in Alerar,” Mavrik said.

“Yes,” Gavner replied, “If it were not for your quick thinking, and that dwarf in the cell next to us, perhaps we would still be prisoners there.”

“And we made some good relations with the dwarves,” Mavrik said. “Those could come in handy eventually.”

Koli
09-04-2017, 07:55 PM
Koli sipped his wine as he listened to everybody laughing and having a good time. Even in spite of all the problems and hardship in the world, smiles and laughter always got to him. He loved to see people smile, he loved to hear people laugh. Young, old, male, female, friend, foe, laughter just made him happy. Perhaps in a world where problems prevail, in a world that oppresses people so much that they lose the will to try, laughter and smiles were the telltale sign of joy; and wherever there was joy, hope followed.

Hope that people would carry on. Hope that people would find it in themselves to continue; hope that people would stay strong and never give up.

Koli slowly sipped his wine as he enjoyed the others’ company. They were becoming intoxicated, which was amusing, but Koli was always sober- he made sure of that. In all of his years he had never once been inebriated, and he intended to keep it that way. He stayed sober so that his friends could enjoy themselves in whatever way they liked, including being intoxicated. The priest smiled as he observed and found their conversations amusing, but he was always ready to fight. Always ready to protect those whom he loved.

“Koli,” Mavrik said, “It’s very nice to meet you! A friend of Gavner’s is a friend of mine!”

Koli looked at Gavner’s friend, observing him for a moment, and then he nodded.

“He doesn’t talk much, does he?” Mavrik asked.

“No,” Gavner said, “In all of the time that we have been with him he has not spoken or written a word to us. He communicates through other means.”

“It’s true,” Drake added, “I try to reach out to him telepathically, but he refuses to send any messages in return.”

“Wait, you’re a telepath?” Mavrik asked in shock.

“Yes,” Drake said with a laugh.

“So you can like, talk to me through my mind?” Mavrik asked astonished

“I could, yes,” Drake replied.

“No way!” Mavrik said in disbelief, the effects of the ale weighing upon his mind more than he would have liked to admit. “Say something to me.”

He looked at Drake who smirked and stared back. Then after the next few moments, Mavrik’s hand shot up to his temple and a look of shock was on his face.

“Wow,” Mavrik marveled, “That was kind of unique! Now stay out of my head unless you absolutely have to speak to me.”

“Hey, you asked for it,” Drake said with a shrug.

Koli would have been content continuing to fellowship with his friends for the rest of the night, but he knew that they were here for a purpose, and they would soon have to depart. Using his foot, Koli tapped Gavner under the table. Gavner looked at Koli, and the rest followed suit. Koli was the most respected member of the group, and when he wanted to communicate, everybody gave their attention.

Taking out the folded invitation from his pocket, Koli placed it on the table and tapped it before looking back at Gavner. “Oh yes,” he said, “Enough nonsense. On to business, shall we?”

Gavner had meant to explain the reason for everybody’s convergence as soon as they arrived, but he got distracted when seeing friends for the first time in a while, and after a few drinks, well, the night got away from him.

“As I said, we are here in the spirit of Christmas,” Gavner said.

“Yes, but what of this Christmas that you speak of are we here for?” Mavrik asked, “And what is this adventure that you speak of?”

“All in good time, my friend,” Gavner said, “I have called you together because we are going to get a gift for our dear friend, Black Shadow.”

“Well it’s going to be hard to top the present we got him two years ago,” Drake said, “That bow was what you call quality.”

Koli nodded silently in compliance.

“Hear me out,” Gavner said, “Do you know of Black Shadow’s past?”

The other three looked at each other. “No,” Drake said.

“I’m not even sure that I know who this Black Shadow you speak of is,” Mavrik said.

“I introduced him to you a few times before,” Gavner said, “He is a dear friend of mine. But I digressed. Black Shadow actually came from royalty.”

“No wonder he is your best friend,” Mavrik said.

Gavner shot Mavrik a sideways look, and shook his head. "No, Black Shadow was originally the son of a king in a kingdom in Raiaera. Then his brother, Malrik, blamed the assassination of his father on Black Shadow and had him exiled. Now he has to wear a mask over his face wherever he goes because there is a large bounty on his head."

"So he only has to wear a mask in Raiaera, why does he wear it all the time?" Mavrik asked.

"Because of his brother's extensive reach, he has connections all over the world. Black Shadow is not safe anywhere," Gavner replied. "And we are going to fix that."

"Yes!" Drake celebrated.

"Now you're talking," said Mavrik.

Koli gave a smirk.

"Why the sudden celebration?" Gavner asked the group with a puzzled look.

"We've been waiting for good news like this all night," Mavrik said, "you can't expect to invite us on an adventure and have us not be excited!"

"Well then," Gavner said, "I suppose that the night simply got ahead of me. But never mind that, onto the details I suppose."

"Wait, before you start," Drake said, "What do the requirements of this quest entail?"

"Well," Gavner said, "As always, I can not assure your return. You must do that yourself."

"Ahh of course," Mavrik said, "And I suppose you're ducking out of our funeral arrangements as well?"

"Should the need arise, I will do everything in my powe-"

Drake and Mavrik burst out laughing. Koli held a smile.

"We're just kidding, Gavner," Mavrik said.

"Right," Gavner said with a smirk, "I knew that. Now, here is the plan..."

Drake looked around the empty pub hotel room, courtesy of Gavner. The vampire had insisted on paying for everybody’s drinks and lodging, and they were said to set out at dusk’s first darkness. Every bit of him was teeming with anticipation. Drake had a feeling that something great was going to happen on this journey and he was very excited.

Drake had a very unique past. After wandering, and having no home for all of his life, he encountered a demon who nearly killed him. Just as Drake was about to be killed, he was saved at the last moment by an arcangel, and taken to heaven where he was healed. It was there that he met his soon to be best friends, Gavriel, who was a messenger, and Seraphina, who was a healer. There, they told him that he was an angel, and charged him on a mission to claim his birthright as being a member of the Ninefold Celestial Heirarchy, and become an arcangel.

In order to become worthy of the Heirarchy, The Creator, or The Boss as all of the angels called Him, set fourth criteria to Drake that he had to defeat varying ranks of demons, including the second in command to the devil himself.

So here Drake lay, staring up at the ceiling, teeming with anticipation.

Well, Drake thought, to himself, Maybe seeing Gabriel and Seraphina will help take my mind off of it.

The only way that Drake could visit any of his angelic friends was through astral projection. Astral projection was the process of sending one’s spiritual body away from his physical body, and into the realm of angels. Drake closed his eyes and took a deep breath, relaxing every time he exhaled. Soon, he felt a foglike wave distancing him from the physical world. He became lighter, and lighter, until he floated away from the bed. He opened his eyes and found himself in the familiar astral realm. The whole astral realm was a reflefction of the physical world. It had mostly the same exact landscape, except in the astral world, things would often be missing, or out of place.

The astral plane, and interactions in it were all based on vibrations, or intentions; bad intentions attracted other low vibration frequencies, and good intentions attracted high vibrations.

[Gabriel, Seraphina,] Drake sent telepathically, [come here if you have the time.]

Koli
09-04-2017, 07:56 PM
Koli stood in the shadows of the main street with his back against a wall of one of the buildings in the main square. People-watching was a rare phenomenon for Koli, ; he had always lived in secluded areas and places where not many people were. Just observing the world pass him by, completely unaware of him, mde Koli feel very humble, which brought comfort to the priest. Whenever Koli felt upset, conflicted, or troubled, he reminded himself of how humble he ought to be, and he would feel better. That was why he was so calm, and unphased by anything that happened, no matter how big or small. Koli especially loved watching the smiles and the joy that those passing by had on their faces at times.

The priest could tell who enjoyed life, and who was truly happy; it was those people who Koli knew were not caught at the rat race. It was those people who restored Koli from his weariness in society. It was those people from whom Koli’s faith in the world was restored. And yet, at the same time each and every one of them were still absorbed entirely in his own world. All of them were bustling through the main square, and yet none of them noticed the priest in the shadows during the late afternoon. Koli had yet to be noticed by any passerbys; everybody was too busy trying to get home.

Koli started down the main square, keeping to the shadows; it was still awhile until sundown, and he wanted to see more about the city. Koli walked around the marketplace, and by the city hall instead. A large rather than tall building, city hall loomed over all who passed by, gloomy and powerless.

Gavner woke up to see the faint evening light trying to shine through the thick black curtain on his room’s window. The entire room was made of wood, save for the thin, barely cushioned mattress. Mavrik was sleeping in a bed of the same make, across the room by the dresser. Gavner sat up yawning, and began to stretch. Already, he was thinking of what presents he could get Drake, Mavrik, and Koli. Gavner had shared with everybody that they were going on a mission to get Black Shadow a present, but they did not realize that Gavner was secretly trying to find out what they wanted most for the Christmas season as well.

Gavner looked over at the sleeping Mavrik, and an idea crossed his mind. The young vampire remembered Matthew, the person from whom he first learned about Christmas, telling him that in the Christmas season people went out “Caroling,” or singing to people about Christmas to bring them joy and put them in the “Christmas Spirit.” Gavner knew that not many people in the world celebrated, or even knew about Christmas, so caroling would be a great way to spread the news about Christmas. Gavner got up, pulled on his boots, buttoned his shirt before shuffling out his room and down the steps. He ordered a quick breakfast of two steaks and tall glasses of water as he almost ran back upstairs to his room. He burst in the door to find Mavrik fully dressed, shaven, and showered.

“How on earth did you bathe? The nearest bath house is two minutes away?” Gavner marveled.

Mavrik just smirked. “Ahh,” he said, “Two minutes away for a human, or two minutes away for our kind?”

Gavner turned around and smiled as he set the plates and drinks on the end table in the corner of the room. Mavrik was over one hundred fifty years old, and he had undergone special forces training, the most intensive vampire training in existence, which teaches the individual to let go of every aspect of humanity and truly become a vampire in every sense. They learn the absolute extent of their abilities, and how to incorporate unbelievable feats of strength, speed, and all of their supernatural senses in everyday life, and how to rely on them. This was truly a feat, which took many years of intense mental training, and only could be completed by the most intelligent of their kind.

“So Mavrik,” Gavner said while motioning his friend to his breakfast, “Have you ever heard of ‘Christmas Caroling?’”

Drake looked around the room that he was in, in the astral plane. Everything was grey and dreary, and the dresser was out of place. The astral plane always seemed to have a melancholy aspect to it, as a thick fog always occupied the realm. Nobody could see more than fifteen feet in front of them in the astral realm, which was why understanding vibrations was key. In the astral plane, Drake couldn’t necessarily see his environment, but he could “feel,” and “sense” the presence of things and entities.
Suddenly, the vibration in the room went through the roof, and a gold light filled the room. Drake looked to his left to see a handsome, young looking man who had short brown hair and blazing green eyes. He was garbed in a white toga with a golden bangle headband, which was adorned with flowers and laurel that kept his hair up. Two beautiful golden wings rose from behind him, radiating the visual essence into the astral plane.

“Drake!” The angel said with a smile.

“Gabriel!” Drake shouted excitedly, as he ran up to his best friend and threw his arms around him. “I hope I didn’t interrupt anything!”

“Oh no you-“

Suddenly, on the other side of Drake, in a flash of white light, another angel appeared. This one was the essence of true beauty. She had a longer face with perfectly round eyes, in line with her small ears. She had very prominent cheekbones, a littler nose, and perfect lips. Her chin was perfectly in proportion with her face, as it did not protrude beyond her lips or her nose. Her face was longer, and long, curly blonde hair fell to her shoulders. She too was garbed in a white toga, and on her head, was a single golden bangle headband with silver trim. Feathery, glowing white wings came from her back. Drake found her the most gorgeous being that he had ever lain eyes upon, and he thought everything about her was perfect.

“Seraphina!” Drake said, as Gabriel had stopped talking.

“Drake!” She exclaimed in her higher pitched voice, while giving him a big hug.

“I’m so happy to see you guys,” Drake said happily. “It has been far too long.”

“That it has,” Gabriel said, “What affairs are happening recently?”

“Gavner has recruited me for another Christmas mission again,” Drake said, “He had us meet in Radasanth.”

“Ooh,” Seraphina said with a smile, “That is great. It is not good in the aspect that they do not fully understand the meaning of Christmas, but I know it will come in time.”

“They don’t understand?” Drake asked.

“You will realize in time,” Gabriel said, “Now come on, let us descend to the physical realm. I feel you are being called there.”

“Aw,” Drake said with a small frown, “But I just got to see you guys.”

“Go, we will be close behind.” Gabriel said while placing his hand on Drake’s head and returning the half angel to his body. Drake sat up suddenly, and found himself in his bed. The sun was nearly setting.

“I guess it is time to go,” Drake said, sad that he couldn’t spend more time with his friends.

Koli
09-04-2017, 07:58 PM
Koli frantically ran from the kitchen, down the corridor, and out the door of the monastery as fast as his little legs could take him. His breathing was fast, and tears were streaming down his face. The juvenile found himself on top of the steps leading from the stronghold, and he frantically looked left and right, searching for a place to hide. He saw some bushes to his right, and began climbing down the stairs carefully, one at a time. If he fell, he would hurt himself and get in a lot of trouble. His bare feet ran through the grass, and onto the dirt of the freshly weeded garden in front of the Monastery. The boy crouched down and hid behind the bush, still breathing heavily. Suddenly, the door to the building opened and an angry man stepped outside. Koli flinched in fear.

“Koli,” The man said in a dangerous tone, “I know you are out there. If you don’t come out this moment, you will go to bed without dinner.”

Koli stared back through the bush, his vision blurry as new tears flushed his eyes. This was going to be the end, he thought. What he had done was so terrible. Nobody would ever forgive him. The toddler knew what he had to do now; he had to run away. He could no longer stay here, everybody would hate him now. The young boy stood up and turned the other direction before beginning to run away. He ran to the corner of the monastery and turned, breaking for the back yard. His little legs brought him choppily through the garden, putting his little footprints in the soft, brown dirt. Koli knew from this point, that he would have to run forever.

Koli looked down at the ground, as he walked through the square in the light of the setting sun, still keeping under the radar of the world. The square was now scarcely populated, with few people left out. The bell was soon going to chime for the final hour before curfew, and people were making it to their houses and leaving the city to make sure all of their errands were done before going home, but most people were just trying to get home. The marketplace had packed up, and nobody was in that square anymore.

The priest looked up and saw a mansion in the distance. He figured he would go look at it before returning to The Rusty Wheel to start on the journey.

“Ganver, this is ridiculous,” Mavrik grumbled from under the hood of his thick traveling cloak. “This is not our way!”

“Oh hush, you!” Gavner said back from under his own hood, “We could quite possibly be the only exposure that Radasanth would ever have to Christmas.”

“Then let them go without it!”

“No!” Gavner fired back, “I could never forgive myself if I did not at least try to show them, and bring them joy this season.”

The two vampires were making their way from The Rusty Wheel, to the main square. As of this point, Gavner had no plan other than to hope that people would be out this close to curfew. Last year, Gavner had celebrated Christmas with Black Shadow, Matthew, his friend Tyler, and Espoir, the young girl whom Gavner and Black Shadow found as a baby. They had accidentally killed her parents, and they could not leave a baby to die, so they took her on their mission. Black Shadow got attached and adopted her. She had been his daughter ever since. At the Christmas celebration last year, however, Matthew and Tyler had been singing Christmas carols. Gavner could not remember the exact words, but he could remember the tunes and what they stood for.

Mavrik and Gavner reached the main square, across from where the market was earlier that day. It was now all packed up and everybody had gone home. Gavner and Mavrik’s thick traveling cloaks were the only thing keeping them from being burned from the setting sun.

“Okay,” Gavner said, “I suppose this is the place.”

“Gavner, I don’t even know the words,” Mavrik said.

“You will catch on soon enough!” Gavner said back excitedly, “Now let us begin.”

But as soon as Gavner took a breath to sing, he noticed a figure dressed in white moving in the distance. The person was traveling toward a big mansion in the distance.

“Hey,” Mavrik said, “Isn’t that your friend, Koli?”

“Why,” Gavner said, “Yes. Yes it is.”

“Should we follow him?” Mavrik said.

“Yes,” Gavner replied, “Let us go. We can have him carol with us.”

The two vampires began to tail Gavner’s friend, following him from a distance. After a few minutes of their following him, however, he stopped in his tracks. Koli then turned around and looked directly at the two creatures of the night.

“I guess he caught on,” said Gavner. “Come on, let us go meet with him.”

Meanwhile, Mavrik was grumbling to himself. He could have been sure that they were being so quiet, they were undetectable. Mavrik had to figure out this mysterious Koli, whoever he was.

Drake forced himself to his feet and frowned. “Darn,” he said, “I really missed them.”

He turned toward the door, and to his shock, saw his friends standing by the door smiling at him. Drake’s eyes grew wide, and a grin spread across his face.

“Hey,” he exclaimed, “What are you guys doing here? You never come to the physical realm with me!”

Gabriel and Seraphina looked at each other and smiled. “We saw how much you needed us,” Seraphina said.

“So we asked The Boss if we could take a small hiatus from angel work, and come here with you for a time.” Gabe finished.

“Really?” Drake asked excitedly, “He would let you do that?”

“He can do anything He wants,” Gabe replied with a smirk, “He is The Boss.”

Drake was happier now than he had been in years. “Will you go on the adventure with us?”

“If you would like us to,” Seraphina said, “We are here for you right now.”

Drake happily looked at his friends. They looked just as they did on the astral plane, except both of them were dressed similarly to Drake. Both had a white strung shirt, Seraphina wore a leather corset, and Gabe had a satchel, and shoulder plates. A longsword hung in a sheath from his belt. Seraphina had a hip pouch, and wore trousers and boots. Neither of their wings were showing, but Drake knew that they were more than likely folded behind them, just as Drake always folded his when he was indoors. In fact, he hadn’t stretched his wings in over two years; he couldn’t actually use them- he wasn’t strong enough yet. The half angel ran to his friends and gave them both a big hug, as they wrapped him up in a group hug. They all were smiling and laughing, three friends, finally all together once again. They were finally here, they were finally real. In his arms. Drake could feel them here with him!

“I forgot what it feels like to be in a physical body,” Gabe said, “It has been centuries!”

Drake just smiled back at his friends. “Come on,” he said, “Let’s go find Gavner, Mavrik, and Koli.”

Gavner had booked them all adjacent rooms, so Drake checked them all. Koli’s bed looked as it had not even been slept in, and Gavner and Mavrik were gone.

“Well, I guess they must be waiting for us in the square!” Drake said.

Koli
09-04-2017, 07:59 PM
Koli was nearing the mansion, wondering what he would find when he got there. More than likely, one of the most powerful people in the city lived here. Was he corrupt? Was he righteous? Was he a church official? Koli did not know why he was so curious, and attracted to this entity, but he was bound to find out. As he was walking towards it, though, he strongly felt as if a presence was pursuing him. The priest stopped. The presence did not go away. He turned around to see Gavner and Mavrik, garbed in thick black cloaks to shield themselves from the sun’s harmful rays, staring at the priest from the main square. Koli looked at them and waited. He knew that they would get his message and come to them sooner or later. After a few minutes, they caught on and came his way. Koli waited for them until they arrived.

“Oh, hey there Koli,” Mavrik said, “What are you doing out here?”

Koli looked back at them and simply raised an eyebrow.

“We are out to carol. Would you like to join us?” Gavner asked.

Koli brought his thumb and forefinger to his chin while he thought. Obviously he could not sing, but in case the need arose, he could protect his friends in their state of giving and love for the world. The priest did not agree with their carelessness; however, he did support spreading love and joy into the world, and so he did not mind being their personal guard. He nodded his head in compliance and motioned for them to follow him to the mansion before he started off for the large edifice.

“Wait, where are we going?” Gavner asked, “That is the residence of the Viceroy Athenry Sergio. He is known for his ruthlessness and short temper. Are you sure you want to go caroling there?”

Koli stopped and looked back at Gavner, simply staring into the vampire’s glowing red eyes with his white irises. Gavner cleared his throat and shifted his weight, looking expectantly at the priest, hoping for him to say something else. Koli did not.

“Okay,” Gavner said, after a long, uncomfortable silence, “We will go your way. But we must leave if Athenry turns us away.”

Koli turned around and began to lead the way again.

“That is the last time I question him,” Gavner cracked from behind

Gavner_Nahs

Gavner and Mavrik trustingly followed Koli, but Gavner still had a bad feeling about bothering Athenry. True, he was not afraid of any of the guards, especially with Mavrik and Koli, but he was afraid of Athenry’s corruption, and his reach- not only within the city of Radasanth, but also throughout the world. Athenry had connections everywhere, in high places, and he was a force to be reckoned with to say the least. If they angered Athenry, or upset him in any way, the consequences they could be facing would possibly follow them.

But Gavner saw what happened when he questioned Koli, so they continued along as the sun finished setting. They reached cobblestoned sidewalk in front of the mansion just as the last rays of the setting sun disappeared. All of the street lanterns came on, and the bell from the Citadel’s belfry chimed loudly so the whole city could hear, signifying that the curfew would be enforced in an hour. They stopped in front of the path that led to the large, ornate mansion wrought of stone, and wood alike. No fence, or gate enclosed the property, but a sentry was posted on the balcony above the door. They paused for awhile, and after several minutes, Gavner noticed both Mavrik and Koli staring at him.

“What?” Gavner asked, once he noticed them looking at him.

“Well, now what?” Mavrik asked, “You were the one who wanted to come caroling. Show us what to do and we will do it.”

“Oh, well,” Gavner said while curling his fingers and looking around nervously “We just, start singing I suppose.”

Gavner paused. They continued to look at him. This was rather uncomfortable. “After you,” Mavrik said.

“Right,” Gavner said, rubbing his hands together. For a moment, he wanted to turn back and go to the pub. He wanted a tall mug of ale right now, but that would hurt his pride, and he could not handle that. He took a deep breath. “How did that song go?” he mumbled to himself.

“Hey!” Gavner shouted to the sentry, “We are here to bring you joy for the Christmas season, so merry christmas!”

Before the sentry could question, Gavner burst into song.

”We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, and a happy new year, Gavner began. Mavrik rolled his eyes, but stayed true to his word. Following Gavner’s lead, he began to sing himself.

Drake and his friends went downstairs, and he ordered his friends and himself water.

“I bet it has been awhile since you have eaten or drunk anything in this plane!” Drake said.

“Yes, but we often keep in mind that this is the plane of sin,” Gabe said. “If you allow these actions to be your only actions pursued, or if you allow these actions to fuel your desires, you too will be caught in the trap of the physical realm.”

Gabriel took a drink of water. His expression softened. “Although, I suppose that it is rather refreshing.”

Seraphina and Drake began laughing hysterically. “Maybe we should get out and find the others,” Drake said.

Drake payed for their water, and they set out into the square. The last light of day had set over the horizon, and nobody was out. The three friends began to walk through the square, and suddenly Seraphina perked up and looked to the right. “I hear something,” she said.

“What is it?” Drake asked.

“It sounds like somebody yelling. Oh wait, now he is singing.” She replied.

“Gavner,” Drake said. “Come on!” Drake began running towards the direction that Seraphina heard the noise, and the others followed. After a little while down the road, Drake began to see a large mansion in the distance with three figures standing in front of it. That was Gavner, Mavrik, and Koli. The three angels reached Drakes friends, and Drake interrupted. “Gavner,” he said, “What are you doing?”

“We are singing Christmas carols,” Gavner replied, “Now come on, let us finish! Follow my lead.”

”Oh, bring us a sticky pudding, oh bring us a sticky pudding, oh bring us a sticky pudding, and a stup of good fear.

Drake thought this song was insane. It seemed as if they were trying to monger hatred against this said Christmas. Suddenly, the door to the mansion opened and somebody stepped out on to the porch. He was a tall, plump man who wore a night robe.

“What is the meaning of this?” He called in a deep booming voice.

“Sir, we bring tidings of joy and Christmas to the city of Radasanth!” Gavner called back, “And now we will sing carols of Christmas!”

[Oh dear,] Drake said to Seraphina and Gabriel telepathically, [This is going to be an interesting occasion. Will you sing with us?]

[Of course!] The two angels replied telepathically.

Koli
09-04-2017, 08:00 PM
”Good tidings we bring, to you from the king, good tidings for Christmas, and a happy New Year!” Before the Viceroy could reply, Gavner was into another carol.

”Deck the halls with bouts of folly, tra la la la la, la la la la!” Gavner sang. Suddenly, the friends that Drake had brought began to sing, harmonizing and adding perfectly to the carol. It sounded amazing.
”Tis the season of your follies, tra la la la la, la la la la. For you now wear gay apparel, tra la la la la la, la la la. Troll will come to give you peril, tra la la la la la, la la la la.”

Koli was not familiar with Gavner’s beloved Christmas, but to the priest, these carols seemed very insulting and offensive. He hoped that Gavner had a plan for this, or they would all be in big trouble very soon.

“Enough!” Sergio boomed, “Come closer, so I can see who you are.”

Gavner started toward the viceroy, and Koli followed. The angels and Mavrik remained back, however, waiting in case they needed to get away. They approached the man, whose silhouette was only visible because the light was shining from behind him. As they drew nearly five feet away from him, Koli could make out his long face, double chin, and orange hair that sprouted from the top.

“What is this Christmas that you speak of?” Sergio said, “I am willing to entertain the idea. If you do not provide an adequate explanation, well, let’s just say you are harassing me.”

“Christmas is a season for-“

“Yes yes, I heard you the first time.” Sergio interrupted Gavner. “But what is Christmas?”

“To celebrate Christmas, one must give a present to those whom he cares about to give them great joy.” Gavner said.

“And do you care about me?” Athenry said dangerously. Koli threw Gavner a look. He had to choose his words very carefully, or it could lead to a serious disaster.

“Do you care about me?”

Ganver froze. He did not know how to answer this question. The creature of the night suddenly became hyper aware of how delicate of a situation he was in, and how easily he could cause a catastrophe.

“Why yes, sir,” Gavner replied, taking what he believed the safest route, “Of course I do.”

Sergio studied Ganver. Gavner could clearly make out every inch of Sergio in the dark. From the wrinkles in his forehead, to the double chin on his neck, this plump politician was nothing against Gavner’s supernatural senses. No matter what Sergio did, he was no match for Koli, and Gavner. If this man tried anything on either of them, they would kill him and flee the city to never return. But Gavner wanted to return. Radasanth was as a home was to him. The creature of the night was very fond of this place, and knew that he could not kill Sergio.

Okay, Gavner thought, No matter what, we cannot kill him.

“And how, pray tell.. er.. what should I call you by, good sir?” Sergio began.

“I am Gavner Nahs.” Gavner replied.

“Yes, thank you. And how, pray tell Gavner Nahs of Christmas, how much do you care about me?”

Gavner resisted the urge to look to Koli for help. He merely hesitated for a moment, before saying “Why sir, I would do everything in my power to make your Christmas wish come true.”

Sergio smiled a toothy, crooked politician’s smile. Gavner didn’t know much about politics, but he knew that greed, corruption, and lust for power were more than likely on Athenry’s mind. For a moment, it seemed as if Athenry was going to call Gavner’s bluff, and have the vampire arrested. But then he spoke, saying “Well, then by all means step inside where we can talk in a more private environment.”

He stepped aside, motioning for Koli and Gavner to enter his house. For a moment, Gavner hesitated once more. It was still not too late to turn back. But then again it was. If he ever wanted to return to the city, he would have to comply with the viceroy. Gavner and Koli slipped past the large man, and into his parlor which was lavishly adorned with deep blue carpet, large poufs and chases, and a small coffee table. Golden painted trim, and the same color threaded tassel adorned the curtains and the sofa.

“So Ganver Nahs, I have my Christmas wish ready for you.”

“I hope that Gavner is alright,” Drake said worriedly, pacing back and forth. “He has been in there for over five minutes. He should be out by now!”

“Calm, Drake.” Seraphina said, placing a hand on his shoulder. Instantly Drake blushed and looked at her hand. “Gavner can handle himself. You of all people should know that.”

“I know,” Drake said, “But it is still nerve-wracking. He is my friend.”

“What is the plan after this?” Gabe asked. “Has Gavner told you yet?”

“Well yeah,” Drake replied, “We are headed to Raiaera.”

“And have you yet secured passage from Radasanth to Raiaera?” Gabe pressed.

“Um,” Drake said.

“I will take that as a no. We should probably do that now,” He said with a smile. “Follow me.”

Drake tossed a look back at the mansion, unsure of whether he should leave or not, but then he realized that the need to escape could arise at any point.

[Hey Gavner,] Drake called out to Gavner inside the mansion telepathically. [We are going to the docs to secure a voyage. Meet us at the west dock when you are done. We will come looking for you if you need it; should that need arise call out mentally.]

“Hey wait up!” Drake called to his friends who had already taken off down the street.

“In order to secure a voyage, we need to find a captain with a ship going to Raiaera,” Gabriel said.

“Are any going to be awake at this time?” Drake asked.

“Oh they will be awake for sure,” Gabriel said, “Nearly all the sailors are night owls.”

“Should we split up?” Drake asked, stopping. They had reached the wharf. Gabe looked uncertainly at Drake.

“He is right,” Seraphina said. “We have a higher chance of finding a captain sooner if we are all looking separately.” Gabriel still looked at Drake uncertainly. “It will be all right, Gabriel, Drake knows what he is doing.”

Drake smiled. “Meet here in forty minutes?” he asked. The others exchanged glances and nodded. Gabriel ran off to the south urgently. Drake turned to go North, and Seraphina’s perfect, warm hand gently grabbed his. The half angel stopped dead in his tracks and looked at her.

“Drake,” She said, “Please be careful.”

Koli

Gavner sat comfortably on the sofa while Koli sat stiffly upright upon a small chair. Koli’s vampire friend was spread out with his arms on the back of the furniture and his leg resting upon the other. The priest could literally smell the corruption and negative vibes from this place.

“Please,” Athenry said before he went into the other room, “Make yourself comfortable.”

While Sergio was gone, Koli shot a glare at Gavner. This made the vampire uncomfortable.

“What?” he said earnestly. Koli continued to glare. “He said to make ourselves comfortable. That is what I am doing. Why would he have all of this furniture if we were not allowed to enjoy it?”

Koli raised an eyebrow. Gavner gave a sigh. “Fine,” the vampire said sitting up and leaning forward with his hands in his lap now. “Happy?” Koli smiled, and Athenry came in from the other room.

“I hope you gentlemen are enjoying your stay in Radasanth,” he said in his weasely voice as he began handing out tea cups and he placed a tray of pastries in the center of the coffee table. “It is almost time for the first snowfall.”

“Ooh,” Gavner exclaimed, “I believe there is a Christmas carol for that!”

Koli rolled his eyes, but Sergio politely seemed interested. “Sing some of it for me,” Athenry encouraged.

“Well, I suppose I could sing you a bit,” Gavner said modestly.

”I am dreaming, of a white Christmas just like the ones that I used to know. Where the trees listen, and childrens’ tops glisten to see sleigh bells In the night. Gavner sang. Athenry started to talk after Gavner paused to take a breath, but the vampire continued singing over the viceroy.

May in your days, you be married and white, and may all your Christmases be bright.

Athenry smiled politely and began to clap. “Bravo, bravo. You really are full of this, er, Chreesmar-“

“Christmas.” Gavner corrected.

“Er yes, Christmas, spirit Master Nahs.” The viceroy said. “Now, about this gift exchange.” He started.

“Yes,” Gavner cut in, “What is it that you would like for Christmas this year, Mr. Sergio?”

“You know what I would love, Master Nahs, more than anything?” Athenry said, leaning closer.

“Yes yes,” Gavner rushed, “What is it?”

Athenry looked back, and his crooked smile appeared again. “I would like the ring of the Chancellor.” And he said such with a twinkle of greed in his eye.

Gavner_Nahs

Gavner opened his mouth to ask what the significance of such ring was, but he changed his mind when he saw Koli’s giving him a dirty look. “Well sir,” Gavner said, “We will do everything in our power to get it for you.”

“Everything in your power?” Athenry said raising an eyebrow, his whole demeanor changing. “I thought you said that you care very much about me.”

“Yes sir, I do-“

“Well then why would you not be sure you are going to get me what I want?”

“Sir, we-“

“I want that ring, Master Nahs. Please do return when you have it.”

That was Gavner’s cue! “Yes, of course sir,” the vampire said standing up and shuffling to the door. “We will get it.”

“And Master Nahs?” Athenry said just before Gavner left. “Please, hurry back.”

Gavner shut the door behind himself and Koli, and ran down the path to the road where Mavrik was waiting.

“Mavrik,” Gavner said, “We need to do something before we leave.”

“Of course, Gavner, I’m fine. Don’t worry about me! I have only been out here for over twenty minutes.” Mavrik said.

“We need to,” Gavner started, but then he realized that he needed to lower his voice. “We need to steal the chancellor’s ring.”

“Why?” Mavrik asked, taken aback.

“I do not know,” Gavner replied, “But the viceroy made himself very clear.”

“Do you know where this man lives?” Mavrik asked.

“Athenry said he lives south by the border of the dock district.” Gavner said, “But no doubt the security detail is the finest there is.”

“That’s okay,” Mavrik said, “I got past the security detail of vampire special forces that were guards. I think we can get past a few humans. Let’s go!”

Koli, Gavner and Mavrik ran down the street at an insanely high speed, but surprisingly Koli kept up with them. Koli was full of mysteries which Gavner still wanted to figure out. They ran through the darkness, down the streets, taking the route due west. Gavner figured that when they reached the borders of the docks they would head south and look for another mansion. The darkness of the night acted as comfort to his and Mavrik’s supernatural eyesight. It may have been pitch black out but they could see as plain as day. Gavner smelled the salt of the ocean, and felt a wind on his face as they reached a wooden path on the ground instead of a well worn stone road.

“We are here,” he said.

Chapter II: The Heist
Drake ran to the north down the wooden wharf walk. He looked to the left and right and saw a bunch of pubs and bars for sailors. The angel noticed one on the left and decided to check it out. He entered the pub and looked around, seeing nearly all of the tables full, and hearing a low murmur. The space was small, and there was a staircase in the middle of the room leading to a second level. A bald man with tattoos on his arms and piercings on his face was serving customers, and everybody seemed to be very grim and even angry. Drake looked around and couldn’t’ help but to feel he was in a bar for only sailors. He was reluctant to do so, but he advanced to the end of the bar and sat on a stool, next to a burly man with a tattoo of an anchor on his arm.

“So,” Drake said, “Do you know where I can find a captain?”

The man threw drake a look out of the corner of his eye. “You too scrawny,” he said in a thick, deep, dumb voice. “No captain want you.”

Drake looked back at the man, mouth agape. “Sir,” he said, “All I want to know is-“

The sailor began to stand up, towering over Drake by a whole head, and clearly at least one hundred fifty pounds heavier. “You know what?” Drake said quickly, “I was just leaving.”

He jumped from his stool and nearly ran out the door into the street. “Whew,” Said Drake, “That was close. This may be more difficult than I thought.”

The angel walked across the wooden boardwalk to another tavern that read “The Salt Bag.” Drake pushed opened the door and quickly closed it once more. The smell of the sailors inside nearly knocked him out. Clearly no captain would go in there for any reason. The angel turned and continued down the boardwalk, looking for a good tavern to converge in. There were normal sized buildings on each side of the walk, but Drake came to a halt when the structures grew in size, and turned into large warehouses to store valuable resources for imports and exports. Far beyond the warehouse district of the port was the shipyard where vessels could dock and leave. Drake walked a bit further, curious of how far he could see down the boardwalk. But as he continued, Drake noticed a soft light coming from one of the warehouses on the right.

Koli

Koli slowed to a stop with Mavrik and Gavner, standing before the wooden boardwalk. The pathway continued straight for a ways, which was west, but also converged left and right. The straight pathway was halted by a building, tall and windowed. Most of the buildings down all of the boardwalks were pubs and taverns for sailors, and the dark skies made it difficult to make out exactly what was lurking around; however, Koli paid attention to what he was seeing, and his mind filled in the blanks.

“So this is the district?” Mavrik asked.

“It is,” Gavner said, “We must be getting close. This way.” Gavner continued, motioning south down the boardwalk. Koli followed, ever vigilant of guards and suspicious. They continued running down the boardwalk, when the Citadel’s belfry rang out once more, this time as a burden- as a warning shot. The curfew was now being enforced.

Instantly Koli darted in front of Gavner and Mavrik, held out his arms to stop them, and corralled them to the nearest pub. He pointed to the door and without questioning, the two vampires complied. They all stepped into the pub frantically and shut the door, yet none of them were breathing heavy. The pub was rather desserted, and everything was wrought out of wood, save for the table tops and the bar counter. As pubs went, this was one of the finer ones that Koli had seen.

“That was close,” Mavrik said.

“Ay, dodgin’ the curfew, are yeh lads?” said a man who was sitting at a table, sipping a glass of wine.

“Well, we would prefer not to make the entire city aware of our presence,” Ganver replied.

“Where yeh be headed so in a hurry?” The man asked. He had two sailor blue eyes and a long grey beard. A long sleeve shirt and a red and white bandana hung around his neck.

“We um,” Gavner began, but Koli threw him a look and the vampire fell silent.

“We are headed to a different part of this district.” Mavrik covered, “And the guards would surely signal our presence.”

“But not if yeh lead the boardwalk with caution!” the man said skeptically.

“Oh?” Mavrik asked. “I don’t understand.”

“Well the guards, they be so hard tryin’ to find curfew breakers. They ‘ave sentries on the roofs, and patrols in the alleys, but they forget to guard the main square!” He exclaimed. “If yeh want ta get anywhere in the wharf district, head the main boardwalk.”

“Thank you, sir,” Gavner said, “But why help us?”

“Yeh know sunny,” the old seafarer said, “I remember back when we didn’t have no dad gum curfew. People could come ‘n go as they pleased ‘n things were a lot better around here.”

“Where are you heading to?” Mavrik asked.

“I’m Ferd, cap’n of a trade route to Fallien.” He said. “Fallien ‘n Dheathain ‘re my routes ‘n I know ‘ery water in between.”

“Say,” Said Gavner, “Are there any maps of the city around here?”

“Erm, no I don’t have any,” the old timer said, “But yeh may find one in ol’ Richter’s office. ‘E is the district’s notary. ‘is office is three doors down the right ‘cross the street. Say, ‘ow come yer lookin’ round Radasanth without knowin’ where yer goin?”

“We need to find a rendezvous point,” Mavrik covered. “And we haven’t been around these parts very often.”

“Well then why not ask me where it is that yer goin?” The seafarer said suspiciously.

“You know what?” Gavner interjected, grabbing the door handle, and motioning for the others to follow him. “That is alright, we will just be leaving. We are going to get that map. “

“Make sure it’s worth it,” Ferd said. Gavner stopped and looked over his shoulder at the old man, who seemed to had a faint twinkle in his eye. “If yer gonna do somthin’ stupid, make sure yeh don’t get caught, or yeh could find yerself put away or worse.”

Gavner looked back at the man, wondering if he could actually know what they were planning to do. "Thank you," he said, before pushing the door open and exiting the pub. As soon as everybody was outside Gavner rushed them down the street and to the notary with a great sense of urgency. They found that it was locked.

"I'll have to cut it," Gavner said softly to the other two.

"Well be quick about it," Mavrik hissed back.

Gavner held the lock in his left hand and placed his sharp black fingernail on the small bar restraining the door from opening. Gavner counted to 3, and sliced clean through the metal. Vampires had finger and toe nails, as well as teeth that were extremely hard. Gavner's were as strong as steel, Mavrik's were stronger than mythril, however. Gavner slid the lock out of place, and opened the door.

"Come on!" He said as he slipped in and shut the door after the others had entered. There was a relatively short hallway with several doors on either side.

"We should split up," Mavrik said.

drake

Drake looked at the warehouse. It was an enormous structure in and of itself- perhaps even used for dry docking vessels. A soft murmur came from within. Before Drake could look around and see if there was a way in, a large bell chime could be heard from the citadel.

“Oh no,” Drake said to himself, “I’m-“

“Hey!” A voice shouted from behind him in the distance. “You are breaking curfew!”

Drake spun around on his heel to see a guard coming toward him with his sword drawn, and shackles ready in his left hand. “Leave it to the sailors to think they’re above the law.” He grumbled. “Do you think you’re above the law?”

“I- um- er,” Drake stumbled.

“Nevermind,” the guard said, “You’re going to the courthouse.”

"That's okay Geoff," came a voice from behind Drake in the direction of the warehouse. "He was just arriving a little late to our gathering. I called 'm, it be my fault that he's out past curfew." Drake spun around to look at the man who had come to the rescue. He was a tall man who, drake could barely make out, was wearing a blue overcoat and black pants. His face was dark and shadowy, but a long beard was visible coming down from his chin.

"I am sorry captain Banks," the guard answered, "but rules are rules. And you know very well that anybody caught out pa-"

"Yes, past curfew will be arrested and tried in the Radasanth court of law blah blah blah." The man interrupted. "I know, but you caught 'im literally at the stroke of the bell. Give 'im a few more seconds and he'da been in here."

"But I have-"

"Please Geoff, 'e will stay with us the rest 'o the night. I won' send 'im back to the sailors quarters." The captain continued.

The guard scowled in the light of the rising moon. What Drake didn't know was that this young fellow, no more than 18, had joined the guard in order to provide for himself, and prove to the very society that he could be a part of something well known. This boy had tried to join a rank in the Corond Navy known as the heroes corps, but yet cast him out because them was nothing "extraordinary" about him. Truth be told, this boy, as he was no more than this was, had animosity for Radasanth, and the very organization that he had served. He had been hurt by his country, and forsaken by society, as he was estranged ever since he was publicly rejected from the corps. He wished he could do his job, he wished that he could place Drake under arrest and prove himself worthy of the military; he wished that he could be strong and wavering, but he had been hurt too many times by those whom he served. It had made him a revolutionary at heart.

"Go. But if I see you out past curfew again, both of you will be sorry." Geoff said.

"Thank you sir," Drake said gratefully, "Thank you so much. Your kindness will not go unnoticed!"

"Come on lad," the captain said, motioning to the side door in the warehouse which he was sanding, "I must be true ta my word."

Drake walked through the door into the light and expanse of the warehouse, and the captain shut the door behind him.

Koli

"We should split up." Koli looked around. He knew that he should stand sentry.

Koli looked at Mavrik and held up a finger up get the vampire's attention.

"Yes Koli, what is it?" He replied. Koli pointed to himself, and then to the door that they just came through, trying to express how he should stand watch. "We don't have time for a sentry, would you mind looking with us?" Mavrik asked.

Koli nodded in approval. He valued the opinions of others, and so he would listen to Mavrik.

"Hey Mavrik," Gavner said, "are you sure we need to be here? We already know where the Chancellors house is. Must we get a map?"

"Okay," Mavrik replied, "Think of it this way. We are in a foreign city with no idea where we are or how to grt around, we have no way in, no way out and we don't even know the city layout to make an escape route. So unless you want to guarantee our capture, I would say yes- we need a map."

"That I will agree with!" Gavner replied with a smile.

"Okay, so Gavner, you check down here for city layout. Koli, you check down here as well for a map, or blueprints of The Chancellor's mansion, and I will be upstairs looking for water and sewage." Mavrik said. "And be careful, let's try not to be more than ten minutes."

Mavrik darted upstairs as Gavner took off down the hall for one of the doors at the end. Koli looked to his left and saw a door that had a brazen knob, and was wrought out of oak. He entered and saw a very small office with two desks on either side of the room. The far wall had a shelf with a lot of record books on it, and there was barely room for two people to fit in between the desks. On the desk to the left there was a makeshift paper that read:

“Dean Emit. Radasanth Wharf District Notary.”

On the desk to the right there was a small wooden plaque in which was carved:

“Hester Small. Radasanth Wharf District Building Layout Advisor.”

The monk walked to the shelf and looked through the record books. Many irrelevant titles were there, such as notarized documents, executive orders from the government regarding the district, and building layouts. He found a shelf that had nothing but building layouts and searched until he found a book that said “blueprints.” Looking through he saw countless layouts and sketches of architecture for bars, and warehouses. Some were sketched, some were professionally drafted, just as some had a signature of approval and some did not. It wasn’t until the very end of the book that he saw the blueprints for a very large mansion that consisted of four floors, a lower level, and an upper level with balconies and a small courtyard outside. Koli read the title of the building.

“Chancellor’s Mansion.” it read.

This was the one that Koli needed. Taking the book, he turned and went to rendezvous in the hallway with the rest of his party.

Gavner_Nahs

Gavner pushed open the door at the end of the hallway which led him into a large room that had nothing but shelves full of small bounded books. To the right of the room there was a desk scattered with open books and quills. A small piece of wood with a name engraved on it was glued to the front. The carving read:

Elmer J. Horace, Radasanth building and city schematic advisor

"Wow," Gavner muttered to himself, "They must actually work hard here."

He had always been under the impression that places with oppressive government bred despair and hopelessness- that for those within a society that refuses to allow the individual rise, and naturally become great, people would refrain from doing so. People would stop working hard because there was no hope. Their hard work would not be rewarded; their hard work would go unnoticed.

Gavner looked at the shelves, reading the small labels under each section. Among them were the market district, the military district, the traveler district, and lastly, the port district. Gavner began going through the books in the port district, finding hundreds of important bits and pieces of city layout- how pubs needed to be no more than 2 stories tall, and warehouses could not exceed two times the maximum pub's height. He saw how all pubs and inhabited buildings such as residences of offices, had to have a total of two connections to the sewer and drainage system. He searched through all of this, but he could not find a city schematic as a whole. After searching all of the shelves, Gavner turned to the desk. "There's got to be something in here," he said.

He looked through all the books, but they were only rough or half drafted. The desk drawers had nothing but blank drafting books and extra quills and ink. Gavner was about to give up when he tried to open the last desk drawer and found that it was locked. The creature of the night perked up and crouched down go get a better look at it. An iron lock, fitted inside the desk, was keeping the vampire from opening it. Gavner hesitated a moment, and then he plunged his sharp, black fingernail directly into the opening. It slid into the lock like a warm knife into butter, and soon gave way to let the drawer reveal its contents.

A large folded piece of parchment was hidden inside. Gavner picked it up and unfolded it- it spanned the whole top of the desk- and observed to see that it was the entire city layout of Radasanth. The creature of the night located the port district, which was the lower right corner, and proceeded to tear it from the layout. He folded his stolen section and placed it into his pocket before turning and exiting the room, leaving the room clearly broken into. Koli and Mavrik were waiting for him outside in the hall.

"Are you ready?" Mavrik said.

"Let us go," Gavner replied, handing the torn schematic to his friend, and with that they left out into the night

Drake looked into the large building, noting characteristics of its layout. It was not, in fact, a warehouse, but more of a building within a building. Going from the entrance all the way to the other side of the large warehouse stretched narrow corridor that reached all the way to the ceiling. The left wall of the corridor was made from fortified stone, and the right wall of the corridor had windows, some with faint glowing lights within, and others dark.

“This way,” The man said to Drake. The angel followed the man, observing the rather bland corridor as they walked. When they reached about the middle of the corridor, the captain turned to the right and went to a small, hidden iron door. Drake would not have noticed it if the captain had not walked to it. He took out a small iron bar and rapped the door in a sequence of taps. A slat opened and two brown, beady eyes peered out.

“Captain Banks,” a gruff voice said from the other side. “Why are you back here? Unless you have money for your tab at Old Muff’s, you should not show your face.”

“Er, I owe a favor to a friend, Shiv. I’m afraid the tab will have to wait.” The captain replied.

“I can’t be responsible for whatever happens to you in there. I can’t intervene if anything happens either,” Shiv replied. “Are you sure you want to go in there?”

“I can fight me own battles Shiv, thank yeh,” the Captain.

“And who’s this little feller? You know the rules, Captain.” Shiv said whilst eyeing up Drake.

“This is a very important man, Shiv. I’m protectin ‘im. ‘E needs to come in with me.” The captain replied.

“I can’t let that happen Captain Banks,” Shiv said. “He waits out here.”

“Come on Shiv, I-“

“No!” Shiv said firmly, “You may enter, but he stays.”

The captain cursed under his breath. Drake touched him on the arm. “Um, Mr. Shiv,” Drake began, “Can I have a moment with Captain Banks?” Shiv narrowed his eyes at Drake and shut the slat.

“Why are you helping me?” Drake asked.

“That’s not important right now,” he replied, “We need to get you a ship to Raiaera fast! As soon as they breach the Chancellor’s corridors, we have not even ten minutes before they shut down the ports.”

Drake widened his eyes at the captain. “Who are you?”

Koli
09-04-2017, 08:05 PM
Gavner, Mavrik, and Koli were crouched on a shadowy ledge in the latter portion of a dark alley. There was only one block between they and the Chancellor’s mansion. Gavner and Mavrik seemed to be able to read the maps and schematics as if it was daylight, but Koli was struggling to read it without light. The two vampires kept tracing entrances and exits, as well as the layout of the surrounding city.

“So after we get out we can sneak over here, or back to the bar that we first took refuge in.” Gavner said.

“Yes, but if we are caught, we need to escape, and we need a quick escape to the dock.” Mavrik replied.

“But we will take extra caution,” Gavner said.

“But we must be prepared for nearly all situations!” Mavrik replied, “Now, there are two easy ways that we can get out, should we be caught. We can escape through this window posterior to the bedchamber, but if it is blocked we can escape directly through the ceiling panels in the chamber.”

“But would not that only work if we did not enter through that method?” Gavner asked, “Because if we enter through the ceiling, they would have heard us.”

“Indeed,” Mavrik replied. “So we now need a way in.”

The two reminisced over entrances through the roof, the sewer, and windows. With the windows and the roof, they would have to scale the building to reach the entrances; however, if they entered through one of the waterways, they would not need to get near it and risk being detected by guards, or outdoor security. Unfortunately, though, if they entered through the sewer, their odor would be an issue, which dogs or elven guards could detect.

“Additionally,” Gavner said, “Undoubtedly, these schematics have been looked through by many professional security detailers. If there is a way in, it is being guarded. We will more than likely face some type of fight- whether it is a duel, three on three, or seven on three. We must be prepared for anything.”

“Now,” Mavrik continued, “If we make it in undetected, that will buy us a bit more time to make it to the bedchambers covertly, but if we are discovered, we must take the fastest route.”

“We must determine which entrance has the fastest route to the bedchambers.”

Koli silently studied the blueprints as the others poured over them; the monk was looking for something the others had missed. As he studied the prints, he slowly began to have an idea of what they had taken for granted. Looking at the others, Koli pointed to a spot on the map. Gavner and Mavrik fell silent, returning the look. After a few moments, Gavenr said what they all were thinking.

“Are you certain?”

Gavner_Nahs

Gavner looked puzzledly at the map as Koli pointed directly at the main entrance. The vampires both looked at him as if he was out of his mind.

“Koli are you saying that we should go in some of the windows near the main entrance?”

The priest tapped the main entrance again.

“Maybe he is telling us that we should look for some sort of weak point above the door?” Mavrik suggested.

Koli shook his head, and tapped the same spot on the map. It was official; Koli was insane.

“Koli,” Gavner said, “Let me understand this correctly, we are going to be breaking into the residence of one of the most powerful men in Radasanth, and quite possibly one of the most secure buildings in the capital city of Corone, and you are saying that we should simply waltz in through the front door?”

Koli observed Mavrik and Gavner through his gleaming white irises which Gavner could see as plain as day in the darkness of the night. The priest nodded.

“Koli,” Mavrik said, “We don’t have time for this. Let’s choose one of the windows if you want a challenge, but we can’t enter through the front door.”

Koli leaned back and folded his arms. At this gesture of his friend, Gavner became reluctant to discount the possibility. The vampire held his chin and grossed his arms, beginning to think. Perhaps Koli did have a theory after all.

“Wait, Mavrik,” Gavner said. “Perhaps there will be less security at the front gate than the-“

“Oh come on!” Mavrik said throwing up his arms, “You can’t possibly think this is a good idea! Come to your senses Gavner.”

“Well if the city made these schematics, they certainly know all of the mansion’s weak spots that were logged in.” Gavner fired back.

“So what would you have us do?” Mavrik said. “Enter through the front, on some sort of suicide mission? Even you know how dangerous it is to enter arms ablaze with sheer force.” Koli stared at Mavrik, and simply shook his head.

“But perhaps that will not be necessary, Mavrik.” Gavner replied. “Perhaps the guards will be so occupied elsewhere that the front will not be guarded as heavily as the other entrances, if at all.” Mavrik thought about it for a few moments. “Additionally, they will not be expecting anybody to break in.” The veteran spy scowled at Gavner. It was always difficult for Mavrik to set aside his pride, and admit that perhaps he had judged a situation too harshly. After a few moments, the vampire heaved a great sigh and his face softened.

“I still think that it’s far too much of a risk,” he said, “but perhaps you and Koli are on to something.”

The captain stared back and grinned at Drake.

“I’m serious!” The angel said, “Who are you and what do you want with me?”

"Who are you and why are you helping me?" Drake asked. He stared back at the man in nothing but confusion.

"Let's just say I was sent by somebody who has an interest in your affairs. Now wait here, and I'm going to find a way to sneak you in." The captain replied.

"Wait a min-" Drake tried to stammer, but with that, the man was off through the door, and into the beyond room. Drake looked down, and then to his right down the extremely tall corridor, towards the way he came in. It still was not to late to run and take his chances out past curfew. Drake knew how to fight. The half-angel took a deep breath, but before he could start off, the door opened and captain banks was on the other side motioning for Drake to come in.

"Wha- I- how-" Drake began, but Banks grabbed him by the arm and pulled him in, shutting the door behind the Angel.

“Come on,” he said under his breath, “I sent him off for an emergency. We don’t have much time before he gets back!” Captain Banks threw a shawl at Drake. “Put this on,” he hissed.

Drake drew the black shawl over his face, concealing his features under a bout of shadows. As he walked in past the door, he saw a large banner over a large arch leading into what looked like an underground marketplace.

WELCOME TO CAPTAINSTOWN

It said in huge letters, and a soft murmur of a mellow marketplace filled the area. There were small stands, in the center of what looked like a market square, and what appeared to be taverns and pubs surrounding the area as a border. It was atypical of the normal marketplace, however, as everybody was walking around prudently with patience, as opposed to the normal bustling around that people do in a marketplace. This was much higher class than a place such as the common market.

Banks veered off to the left, and Drake followed him into a dimly lit wooden pub. There was nothing but a bar and a tender, and at the bar sat three captains, two of which were chatting, and one who was taking a shot of liquor.

“Talk to the lone man,” Banks whispered in Drake’s ear, “He is the captain of the Victorian Princess, and is seasoned in regular trips to Raiaera. Word has it, he is returning in the morning.”

“But-“ Drake started.

“Don’t say I didn’t do my part.” The man replied. Drake turned around, but the man had left the tavern door open, and he was gone into the captain’s square.

Koli crouched, peering around the corner into the Main Street in the wharf district. Once he was certain that the coast was clear, and no guards were prowling the stretch or patrolling the rooftops, Koli raised 3 fingers and motioned for the others to follow. The priest calmly walked up to the door and looked back to see the vampires barreling toward him. Gavner bared a sharp fingernail and was about to jam it into the lock, when Koli stopped him with a firm grip on the vampire’s wrist. Gavner gave the priest an angry look, but Koli simply held up one finger to halt the vampire. The priest then preceded to calmly grab the handle and turn. It was unlocked, just as he had suspected. After calmly swinging the door open, the monk motioned for the others to enter. They begrudgingly hurried in, and Koli shut the portal before turning to see his friends rushing through the entryway to the stairs.

Koli picked a pebble out of his boot and threw it at Gavner, hitting the back of his neck directly where the bump from one of his vertebrae protruded. The vampire stopped in his tracks and looked back angrily at the monk. The pebble struck the floor, and began to fall down the stairs with a “tap, tap, tap, tap, tap.” Koli held up a finger, and began to walk to the stairs. He climbed them, and passed the two vampires who were now boiling with rage. When the priest reached the landing platform of the next floor, he began to slowly observe his surroundings before motioning for the vampires to follow, in the same, slow yet vigilant manner.

The front door of the mansion was an extremely elegantly crafted slab of dark wood, ornately carved, thick, and heavy duty. The floor beneath foot was beautifully polished white and black stone, gleaming in the grandiose glow of the colossal crystal chandelier overhead. The walls were painted white with trim of black, and the entryway was so large, that it could be the dining hall of a small battalion of men. On the right side of the room was a grand staircase leading to a second floor, and on the left, a staircase leading down into some sort of cellar. In the middle was a large arching entrance to the next room. Pillars held up the balcony of the next floor.

Gavner boiled with rage. How on earth could Koli be acting this way? They were in, and now they needed to get the ring quickly, or else they would be caught and have a completely different sticky situation to deal with. The vampire looked around the mansion with contempt, and disgust. Here resided a high ranking official of a suffering city, which was once the envy of the world, complacent in his luxurious life while the rest of the world paid. The wretched thought brought Gavner pure hatred.

Koli turned to the right, peeking around the corner, and held up a finger to halt the others. Impatiently, Gavner took a look as well, but to his surprise, saw a guard at the end of the hall who was just turning the corner. The vampire watched as the man left sight, and then looked at Koli with an entirely different viewpoint. Had they barged in and started running to the chancellor’s bedroom, they would have run into this guard and been discovered; however, because of Koli’s patience and insight, they had been spared this fate, and they still had the element of surprise on their side.

Koli raised his hand and motioned for the vampires to follow, this time Koli crouched and walked hurriedly- but not rushed- down the hall. The red and gold colored carpet felt very soft underneath their feet, as if they were walking on cushion. The corridor was lit by lanterns; however, there was no oil in them. Perhaps, more than likely, the lanterns had been burning some sort of fuel fed through a line in the walls. Gavner looked at this feat of engineering in awe; this was a completely alien concept to him. No concept such as this had ever been brought to Gavner’s perspective. No doubt this was some stolen Alerarian technology, that would be widely sought out. The walls were adorned with paper that was mostly red with gold and black trim.

When the group made it down to the end of the hallway, Koli turned and led them in the opposite direction than in which off walked the guard. The priest hurried five doors down on the right, and they came to another bend in the hall where at which was a door at the end of the straightaway. Rather than turning the bend, Koli opened the door and motioned everybody inside. Just as Koli slipped in, Gavner heard footsteps in the distance. Without thinking, he jumped in after Mavrik and shut the door quickly, leaving only a crack, before silently shutting it and latching the port. The vampire took a deep breath, before looking around the dark room.

“So which way is next?”

Drake, looking around the tavern inside the warehouse, swallowed heavily. He did now know what to think. This land that he was in, this captain’s town, was completely foreign to him. This was not his place of origin, and he did not belong here, so he had to tread lightly. The half angel walked up to the bar and sat down two seats away from the captain. The bartender walked over to where Drake was, but he was not paying attention. The half angel blankly stated off into space as he wondered what exactly he would say to the captain. Scenario after scenario, the half angel contemplated how he would start the conversation before he was snapped out of his trance by an angry bartender's clearing his throat.

"Well," he stated gruffly, "Are you going to buy something, or are you just going to take up space at my bar?"

"Oh, yes," Drake said as he began to panic on the inside. He fumbled urgently in his pocket until he found what few marks he did have left from his journey here and placed them on the countertop. "I'll have a Raiaeran Winter. Virgin, please."

The bartender looked taken aback at Drake's request before scoffing in disgust; however, he took the half angel's money and turned away, shaking his head, to get to work. Mustering up the courage to say something, Drake took a deep breath and opened his mouth to speak.

“What do you want from me, kid?” The captain asked in an impatient tone. “I don’t have time for stupid stuff right now.”

Drake turned to face the man who was sipping from a mug. Every aspect of his being appeared simply tired, and done with the world. He was a very young looking man, and he boasted, short jet black hair with a very short beard, and a handsome complexion. Drake couldn’t help but to notice how young this man was, and wonder how he fell into the profession of being a captain.

“Um, how do you kno-“

“You walk into this bar being led by the infamous Captain Banks who is known for his cons and his debts. Then you just happen to sit near me, and order a non-alcoholic drink. Clearly you are not from around here, and there are only two other men in this entire room who you could want to talk to- and you didn’t sit next to them. Obviously, you want something from me, kid, so what do you want?” The man asked.

Drake observed the man for a few moments. He had turned his head to face the half angel, who had turned completely on his stool to face him. In that moment, the angel stared into the man’s emerald green eyes, and saw that his soul was troubled; he saw that this man was much more than met the eye. In his eighteen years, as Drake found in all of these cases, when somebody tried to appear bigger than they are, or knowing more than they actually do, it was a defense mechanism. What was this man’s story?

Koli looked around in the complete darkness, but his eyes could not adjust to the lack of light. He knew that the vampires could see perfectly well in these conditions; consequently, all he would have to do was wait for them to locate a light, and so he exercised patience. Koli knew, however, that anything could be lurking in the pitch black darkness of the room, and, because of that, he kept on edge- ready to defend at any moment. After a few moments, the sound of rubbing skin could be heard, and the extremely faint glow of a flickering orange flame appeared in the rear corner of the room. The quarter was square in nature, and wrought of hardwood. Faux fur, and large cushioned armchairs, poufs, and sofas lined the room. Elegant paintings of scenic landscapes in Corone, the City Hall, and a large portrait frame of the citadel were hung on the walls, the last of which was on the wall opposite to the door. Mavrik motioned for everybody to quickly gather in the center of the room.

“Now,” he said in a barely audible whisper, “If we get through that far wall we can sneak through the hollow area between the walls which divide the East and West Corridor branches. From the end of that hollowed area, we can come up through the floor of the chancellor’s office on the third floor, which is tiled, and from there take the secret passage under his desk into his wash closet. From there we can make it directly into his sleeping quarters.”

Without questioning, they all broke from the group and started for the painting. Koli took the painting from the wall and held it while the vampires used their sharp fingernails to slice through the beautiful wooden panel of the wall. They cut out an outline of a passage that was more than big enough for a man to fit through, but would still be concealed by the portrait. Finally when the cutout was finished, Mavrik sank his nails into the panel and pulled it off of the wall. But then the unexpected happened. The white haired vampire removed the large piece of wood to reveal a solid brick wall reinforcing the structure of the room.

“Xzcunge!” Gavner and Mavrik cursed in unison under their breath. However, the brick wall was the least of their worries at that point.

“Keep looking, I thought I saw a shadow down this corridor,” They heard a voice outside the door. “I am going to check the lounge real quick, you search the wash closet.” The door handle began to turn, and there was no time to think.

Without thinking, Gavner leapt to the corner, landed without a sound, and pinched out the flame with his fingers. He turned around to take a defensive stance as he looked at the door, but out of the corner of his eye he saw Koli grab Mavrik’s arm and drag him behind the frame.

Oh, this will never work! Gavner thought to himself, but, against his better judgement, he darted back to Koli, and squeezed behind Mavrik and the monk. Koli raised his hands and held the picture frame from the rear lip on the top, so that his hands were not showing from the other side. The vampire saw Mavrik slide the panel of wood down to conceal their legs, and make it appear as if the picture was hanging on the wall.

Just then, the door opened. Light from a hand held lantern shined into the room, faintly illuminating every crevice in a new light. Everybody held their breath, and it was as if Gavner could hear the heartbeats of his friends pounding in his ears. For a moment, everything was still, and then they heard a shout from the doorframe.

“Ahh Jack, somebody flipped the chancellor’s beloved frame of the citadel upside down again!” The man called from the hall. The door slammed, and footsteps were heard leaving.

“Well don’t be looking at me, I didn’t do it!” a voice could be heard, muffled, down the hall.

Instantly, Gavner turned to the brick wall behind them and examined the mortar that was holding the bricks together. It looked relatively new, perhaps only fourteen or fifteen years old, but it was nothing that the creature of the night could not manage. Gavner bared a sharp nail and sank the ebony, impeccably hard material into the surface of the brick mortar, as if it was nothing more than a piece of paper. He began tracing the mortar lines. Although he could have just as easily cut the brick, his nail was not long enough to cleave through the entire block. When he had traced the entire outline of the brick, he jammed his nails into it, and pulled gently. He did not want to overuse his strength, and send it flying, so he applied a constant resistance to the unbudging wall.

Just then, arguing voices were heard at the door. Gavner pulled a bit harder, and the brick came loose, except this time it was a little too loose. It came completely out of the wall, and fell off of his nails, plummeting toward the ground. In that moment, Gavner’s heart sank as secrecy seemed to go out the window. But at the last second, Mavrik’s hand shot between Gavner’s ankles and silently caught the brick before it smashed the floor. Turning red, ashamed of his carelessness, Gavner took the brick from his friend and set it on the floor before going to work on the rest of the wall.

“I’m going to be very blunt,” Drake said, “We need safe voyage out of the country to Raiaera.” The captain scoffed. “Now hear me out, obviously we have our reasons because everybody has reasons, but we are willing to pay handsomely and give ample protection to the ship, as we are…” Drake hesitated. “I suppose that you could say mercenaries, to say the least.” The man listened, yet he still rolled his eyes. “Do you know where I could find somebody to help us?”

The captain took a deep draught from his cup and sighed after slamming it down on the bar. He bit his lower lip and rolled his eyes. “What are you doing here, boy?”

Drake stared back, confused at the man. “I’m not sure what you me-“

“Why are you here?” He asked even more directly, even though that was not possible. “Why are you sneaking into the captain’s village, and why are you trying to escape Radasanth?”

“Well,” Drake hesitated, “My friends and I..” He trailed off. “We are in a- er- situation, if you will.”

“Yes?”

“Yes, we are.” Drake stumbled. “And we need to escape undetected, preferably at the end of the night.”

“Hmm,” he said. “Raiaera, you say.”

“Yes.”

“And what business have you in Raiaera?” The man pressed.

“We all have our reasons, which do not matter so long as one pays.” Drake shot back.

The man scowled and glared at Drake. He shook his head and returned to his drink. The soft glimmer of the lantern light flickered through the tavern, illuminating Drake’s pale skin, and making him aware of his nose. The half angel ran his hand over the smooth wood of the bar. What was so special about this man? Why was it that Drake was supposed to solicit assistance from such a stubborn and difficult person?

“Well what is your reason for being here sir?” Drake asked. “Why does a mighty captain in an entire city of his kind drink alone?”

The man glanced over at Drake with a disapproving loathing. He held his gaze for a few moments before looking back down at his drink. “We all have our reasons. I would not expect an ignorant brat such as yourself to understand.”

Before Drake could reply, the door opened and 3 other captains entered in a group. The man at the bar hesitated, and Drake eyed them suspiciously.

Gavner continued patiently working on the wall, placing the bricks in a neat pile next to one of the comfortable poufs. Koli held the painting, ready to pull it up if the unthinkable happened and they needed to hide once more. But before long, they had the opening large enough to comfortably fit through. Koli Gavner and Mavrik started picking up the bricks and moving them through the port hole in the wall and stacking them neatly and silently on the other side. When they were done, Koli sent the piece of the wall through, and picked up the painting. He hanged it on the wall as he made it through the wall backwards.

“Koli,” the priest heard Gavner whisper, “Follow us, we have memorized the map. We will be out of here in no time.” There was no light whatsoever. They must have forgotten that the priest could not see in the dark, but it did not bother Koli. He could hear them just fine, and so he followed, trustingly. After awhile of walking, Koli heard the convoy in front of him stop.

“Is this it?”

“I think it’s it.”

“Were you counting your paces?”

“Yes, were you?”

“I fail to see how that is relevant here.”

“I fail to see how your face is relevant!”

“Do you want to go??”

Koli stepped forward and placed his hands on each of their shoulders. He could not see the two bickering vampires, but he most certainly could tell well enough where they were.

“Sorry,” Gavner whispered. The sound of the scratching of wood could be heard, and then Koli heard wood shearing from wood. Then the soft scratching of ceramic tile purred through the passageway, before the familiar shearing noise. Koli heard tile on tile as one of the vampires must have placed the piece of floor on top of the surrounding surface. The same scene played out similarly until the priest heard the vampires hoisting themselves up through the passage. Koli walked under the hole when he heard Mavrik saying to take his hand.

As he was pulled up from the dark passageway, there was not much difference in lighting, save for the slight amount of luminescence that was trying to make its way through the curtains from the street lanterns that only surrounded the chancellor’s house. There was something eerie about this place, but the gang had certainly seen worse.

Instantly looking around, Gavner located the desk of the chancellor. He walked over to it and noticed tidy parchment which was so flat that it was as if it had been ironed on the desk. There was a nice inkwell up at the corner of the paper and several quills lined on the right side. The nameplate on the front of the desk read “Moui, Chancellor.”

The creature of the night poked his head under the desk and looked for certain clues or hints, when he found an entire mural of Radasanth inscribed in the back panel, and nothing else. Gavner knocked around on the desk, searching it through and through but he could not find any other place with any clues. He turned away and grumbled under his breath, but when he looked back, he saw Mavrik with a drawer open, tinkering with something inside.

Gavner took a look and found that there was a sundial in the back of the drawer that Mavrik was moving around. It looked as if the centerpiece could be rotated around, and the subsequent time changed. Gavner looked at the picture and noticed that the sun was right over the horizon; it was impossible to tell whether it was rising or setting. Then he noticed that those who on the steps of the citadel in the picture were facing away from the doors. This meant that they were exiting. According to the ancient traditions of the citadel, warriors fought all day in order to hone their skills, facing death repeatedly but still continuing to fight. They came early at the crack of dawn, but when dusk came, the release bell would sound and all warriors by trade would leave the citadel as the sun set so that all could look upon their power and revere the warriors.

Gavner reached into the drawer and turned the centerpiece so that it was facing 9:12 PM, the time in which the sun always set in Radasanth. When he shut the door, a panel popped up which was under the desk. This was their route.

They came in prudently, and bantering yet bantering like gentlemen. They sat down at the far side of the bar, yet one of them noticed the man who was sitting.

“Look,” One of the captains who had a white beard said. “It is one of our old colleagues. Oh, how the time does seem to fly.”

The man at the bar seemed to harden, but he remained looking at his drink.

“Yes, I do recall knowing him once. Once he was a rather noble man. A man of dignity, unlike what he is now.” The man at the bar remained hard, and continued to stare at his drink.

“I wonder what will become of him. He can certainly not return to his former glory, that much is sure. It seems the business took much more out of him than he could have anticipated.”

The man at the bar stood up and turned to leave. Now was Drake’s chance. He stood up as well, and held out his hand as a “wait” motion. He then proceeded to reach out telepathically to the men at the bar. He touched not their conscious minds, but their subconscious minds so they would not be aware of his doing so.

[Leave.] One simple command was all he needed, as he sent the message gravely, and the subconscious mind knows which suggestions to heed and which to ignore, as wisdom Is not the subconscious mind’s forte. At once, each of the men stood up and left the bar without another word. Drake looked at the man after they had left. He returned the half angel’s gaze for a moment, before turning to leave.

“Please,” Drake said, “I don’t care what is happening, but I was sent to you and I need to know why. Why me, why you?”

The man looked at the door and sighed. “I wish I could tell you kid,” he said, “but the truth is, I’m not much of a captain.” And with that he was gone.

Drake looked around fruitlessly at the now empty bar. He sighed and sat down on a stool once more. How had he gotten into this? Why were they here once more? Because of Christmas, obviously. Drake buried his face in his palms as he rested his elbows on the bar. “Oh dear,” he said to himself, “This is going to be quite a long trip.”

What was the point in trying? Drake could do nothing right it seemed. Whenever he tried to do what he was asked, he was unsuccessful. The only thing he was good at was failing. But perhaps failing was not such a bad thing, because Drake made it apparent to learn from every failure of his, and of others. Perhaps it was necessity to fail, but at what point did the amount of failures suffered make one a failure in and of oneself? After all, if one’s purpose was to be successful, and failure was the only result, was that failure?

Koli
09-04-2017, 08:09 PM
Koli motioned to Gavner and Mavrik to wait. He wanted to be the one to scope things out first, even though he could not see in the dark. He felt something pulling him to go first. He stepped through and down into the secret passageway. The builders of the residence must have foreseen instances when the politician in residence would have needed a quick escape. Koli stepped down the stairs and into a musty passageway. Here he stretched out his hands to feel the walls because he could not see. He walked slowly and steadily through the hall until he felt his breath reflected off of a surface in front of him. Here he stopped, and then felt the hard surface in front of him. Moving his hands around, he found a doorknob, which he slowly turned before pushing the door gently. The door started out very creakily, so Koli recoiled a bit, and began to push it even slower as to minimize the creaking noise.

The door slowly glided open as Koli pushed it at a painfully slow speed. When it was open he looked out into the receiving room and saw a massive bath in front of him. The bath was large enough to be a small pool, and there were massive water spigots on the walls, and a large water well with a handle and faucets surrounding the large tube that would send all of the water up through. There were large dispensers of soap and bubbles and relaxation remedies surrounding the tub, and at the far end, several massive stone stairs to get out. At the base of the water well was a massive drain, upon seeing which Koli noticed that there was no water in the bath. He looked at the walls surrounding the door he was looking through to see that they were tiled, and the door must have been an opening in the surrounding wall. The monk stepped out and walked toward the stairs at the far end of the bath. It was far too large for simply one man. Koli never understood the necessity for over the top lavishness in any life. Even for kings, kings should be humble, as Koli had always believed. Life could at times be a mystery to him. Certain things he would never understand. If he were in power, things would be different. But he was not.

The walk through the secret passageway was unbelievably, and incredibly, painfully long. When they walked out of the wall, it was all that Gavner could do to not gasp or exclaim as he came across the massive bath. He knew that the chancellor was a big deal, but this was just simply overly too much, and over the top. Gavner crept through the bedroom, and he approached the sleeping chancellor. The politician was laying facedown upon his massive mattress, sprawled out with both of his arms hanging off the sides. His overly plump face was turned on its side as it rested on his overly stuffed pillow, the rolls on his neck and all of his chins showing as his mouth was wide open and drool was trickling out. He snored heftily, which was more than enough sound cover of the night to mask their presence. The chancellor had on light pink silky pig pajamas. Looking at this man brought disgust to Gavner.

This man reminded him of one of the failed cases to blood a prodigy. In the beginning stages of vampire life, after each vampire had served an apprenticeship for a time after being blooded, there usually came a time where each vampire wanted to take ten or so years off to enjoy and experience the world as “superhumans,” without letting their nature be widely known of course. Most vampires at such an age did not have the insight of the significant creatures of the night, and they still clung to their humanity. The subsequent of this, was called the “cub years,” of the newly blooded vampires. They would venture off into the night and experience all that the world had to offer, womanizing and gambling. Stealing and getting away with discreet crimes, and performing incredible feats that normal humans would be otherwise incapable of. But usually the packs of cubs stayed together, and in doing so they met much pleasurable company, of normal humans, and they would dazzle them and give them awe before moving on to the next fun that the world had to offer. When Mavrik was a cub, in fact, his cub pack called themselves the war hawks, and they would venture out to battlefields where they would wait until night time when all the fighting was over. They would then go out and feast on the blood of the fallen where they could endlessly gorge themselves on their newly acquired taste, and hunger. The ultimate satisfaction would come, and they would grow even stronger and stronger, but their strength quickly went away because they did not use it with a vampric state of mind, rather, a human mindset. Gavner had been very lucky to skip the cub stage, because he had always been goal-oriented. He was in things for the long term strategy, which was to be a prince. Ever since Fintin taught the hierarchy of the clans to Gavner, a burning desire to rule them all overcame him. This was his purpose.

Drake stood up. “Well, now what?”

There was nowhere to go, nothing to do, and he clearly was being very unsuccessful on his mission so far. Just then, a commotion outside the tavern came to his attention. Approaching the door, and exiting, he found a large circle of men in the square of the indoor village. At first Drake was so confused, and had no idea of what was going on. He was hearing music, but there were no instruments. No, this sounded similar to the music which he heard in the heavens; rather, it was not as “heavenly,” per say.

Drake pulled his hood as to avoid drawing attention to his bright blonde hair, and pushed his way through the crowd to see what was going on. A group of men and women were standing on the pulpit, or the raised platform in the middle of the square, and they were… They were Singing!

Singing in Althanas was not a common occurrence, Drake had only heard such music on rare occasions, and only in taverns, or churches (or other such religious affiliations in order to commemorate entities and deities) and even such music was either horrible or very ritualistic. This was Lively and enjoyable! Also, the other uncommon place occurrence here was that there were no instruments behind the voices… it was almost as if the voices were the lyrical singing, *and* they were the background instruments as well! Drake loved this so much, he did not know that such occurrence was possible in the normal world, he thought it was only in heaven.

“What is this style of music?” Drake asked the captain next to him who had exceptionally bushy eyebrows and a long grey beard. “I must know!”

“Erm, this is a new style called, er what did they call it?” He said, “Ar Capellon er something.”

“No you idiot,” the man on the other side of Drake said, “It’s called an A Capella rendition. A Capella means without instruments. It is in the beta phase, and the group asked if they could perform for us. Captains are the true way to spread ideas around Althanas, because they travel and with them they take not only goods, cargo, and culture, but they also spread ideas, beliefs and interests. If you ever want to spread something, come to the captains.”

The crowd loved this music, and so did Drake.

Koli saw Gavner narrow his eyes at the ring on the night stand, and he knew that Gavner knew what he had to do. Taking a deep breath, the vampire began to creep across the wooden floor towards the night stand. As he tiptoed, Koli noticed that the room was in absolute pristine condition. There was absolutely no dust, and all the furniture and aspects of the world were here perfectly upkept. There was no dust at all, the curtains were brilliant and radient, as the colors were not faded, and none of the floor boards squeaked at all. When GAvner reached the night stand, Koli looked at the enormous man of a chancellor in front of him. How could somebody get to this point? He supposed that all aspects of self-value changed once somebody was put into a position of power. The vampire was now upon the night stand, and the ring was perfectly stored in an open ring box. It appeared nearly as a class ring, with a thick golden neck and a large beautiful emerald green gem encrusted deeply in the gold. The inscription read “Chancellor” in bold, robust letters.

Ganver looked from Koli and Mavrik, to the chancellor, and back to the ring. He shook his head and Koli saw him mouth the words “Well, here goes nothing.”

The vampire reached for the ring, but just as he did, the emerald green gem lit up, sending a flash of green light into the room. Suddenly a clear, shield like orb roughly seven feet tall and around appeared, engulfing Gavner, before a large explosion of outward force with a flash of light appeared, and Gavner was thrown through the wall of the mansion, and out of the second story of the building. Without thinking, Koli ran to the night stand, closed the ring box, picked it up and leapt out of the hole in the wall. In one swift motion, Koli stowed the ring in his cloak and leaned forward, breaking the fall, touching the ground with his hands and pushing himself directly into a roll, breaking his fall and landing on his feet. The priest rushed over to his friend who was stirring on the ground, grabbing his left shoulder. Koli heard the soft crunch of rocks next to him and looked over to see that Mavrik had landed in a crouching position.

“Let’s go now!”

Chapter III: The Great Escape
Everything happened so fast. On moment, Gavner was reaching for the ring, and the next he was crashing through the wall and falling a 2 stories to the ground. The vampire desparately gasped for air as the wind was knocked out of his lungs, and he rolled on his side, clutching his left shoulder which was angrily throbbing. Looking up, GAvner noticed that Koli had appeared, and suddenly Mavrik was there.

“Let’s go now!” Gavner heard Mavrik yell in a very muffled voice, as if it was through a glass window.

Gavner looked around with wide eyes, not understanding much. It was as if a haze had descended upon his mind and he was trying to think through it all.

“We don’t have time for this!” Mavrik said. Gavner then watched his friend bend down and pick him up, throwing him across his shoulder as they began to run through the street. Gavner was jostled up and down, as Mavrik was running, the thump thump thumping of his steps was being absorbed by Gavner’s stomach. He felt as if he wanted to throw up. They ran through the street and down an alley, the street lamps faded away and the dark, dank streets became all too familiar at this point.

“Quickly,” Mavrik said, “We must find refuge before-“

Suddenly sirens began to ring out through the town, and the same sinking feeling descended upon all three of the protagonists’ stomachs. Gavner was thrown side to side as Mavrik began to frantically look from side to side, looking for a place of refuge.

“I can’t find any for quite some time, and I forgot the escape route. I have lost my bearings!”

At that point, Gavner assumed that Koli must have lead the way because without a word, Mavrik began to run- except this time it was not as fast, so he must have been matching the pace of somebody who was not as physically superior as he. After some time of running, Gavner felt himself being lowered and set on the ground. He looked around and found that they were in the corner of an alley. Mavrik’s pointed face and his white hair appeared in front of him, and he slowly began to move one finger in front of the disoriented creature’s face from left to right. Gavner followed it with his eyes, and the siren became a bit clearer.

Drake listened to the A Capella music, standing there in awe for close to a half of an hour- and then came the siren. He heard the sirens outside in the surrounding city, and without anybody’s missing a beat, the captains started to flood out of the warehouse toward the exits.

[Um, guys?] Drake called out to Gabriel and Seraphina.

[We hear it,] Gabriel’s voice replied in Drake’s head, [We are on our way. Meet us in the nearest tavern to the docks on the south pier, and we will find you.]

“Sure thing,” Drake said out loud to himself, “Let’s do this.”

The angel began to start toward an exit, and surprisingly everybody was polite. Nobody was frantically pushing or shoving, nor were they panicking. All of the men- captains as it were- were very civil and calm with each other.

“Excuse me,” Drake said to a taller, dark haired man with a lot of scruff. “Where is everybody going?”

The man raised an eyebrow at him. “Sneaking in, are we swabby?”

“I, um…” Drake said, his voice failing him.

“That’s okay, it happens every now and again. All the captains are going to their crews’ quarters, or their ships to take roll and make sure that everybody’s been behaving themselves.”

“Oh,” Drake said, “Yeah that might be rather important.”

“Mmhm.”

“What do you think is happening?” Drake asked.

“Well, by the looks of it, either a disaster is going on, or a serious felony has been committed. And we aren’t even talking about a mass murder, or a robbery, the siren is only used in the event of a serious crime against the state- or the city of Radasanth as a whole- after curfew.”

“Oh,” Drake said, his heart beginning to sink. Gavner, he thought.

“Yes indeed,” the captian replied, “Something very serious is going on. I can guarantee that a manhunt is going on right now.”

“Oh dear,” Drake said, “Well then we better hurry back.”

“Indeed swabby, get back to your captain and stay there. You don’t want to be caught dead out in these conditions. Somebody is going to be put to death from this type of crime.”

Once Drake got out onto the streets, he turned and began to run down the street until he saw the wooden sign that read:

“SOUTH PIER”
Drake ran down the path and looked for the nearest tavern around.

Gavner seemed to be in a completely stunned and shell shocked state. Koli looked from his friend, to the massive hole in the side of the building, and back to his friend.

“We don’t have time for this,” Mavrik said, before picking Gavner up and throwing him over his shoulder. He then proceeded to run of the street and into a back alley. Koli followed him through the nice, pristine street and into the dank alley in between two tall stone tenement buildings. As they ran, the alleys became less and less clean, each one more dank and musty than the previous. Mavrik stopped and turned to Koli.

“We need to find a place of refuge before-“

Suddenly, their problems multiplied as an air raid-esque siren rang out throughout the whole city.

“Xzcunge!” Mavrik cursed!

Without thinking, Koli ran ahead of Mavrik and took a left, beginning to follow unorthodox alleyways. Darting left, jumping right, and before long they found themselves in a far-off, old abandoned transit section. When they got there, Koli stopped and motioned to a corner in the shadows where they could hide, undetected for a time. Mavrik went over and set Gavner down. The vampire looked around, extremely confused and still disoriented. Mavrik took a finger and moved it from left to right in front of his face. Gavner’s eyes followed. Koli put his hand on his friend’s shoulder and looked into his eyes. Using his Eyes of a Hero, Koli’s irises turned a shade of green, which was soothing and calming to all. All the tension melted away from Gavner’s body, and his eyes began to focus more. Then he looked around as if finally woken up gently from a deep sleep.

“Woah, what was that?” Gavner asked, looking at his friends. Suddenly he looked panicked. “Oh no,” he said, “Did you get the-“

Koli interrupted his friend by using his eyes again to calm him down, and nodding.

“Oh,” he replied, “Good… Now we must escape.”

“Easier said than done,” Mavrik muttered from his lookout post a few feet away. “We need to think of our best line of attack. I’m going to go scout out a little bit, to see if we can go through buildings so we can travel undetected.”

“Thank you, Koli,” Ganver said, “For helping me out.”

Koli looked at his friend, and the faintest glimpse of a smile appeared.

Koli nodded, and Gavner grinned widely, flashing his sharp, ebony teeth.

“Quickly,” Mavrik said, “The tavern that we just came from is literally right across the street!”

Gavner stood up quickly, but quickly braced himself with the wall to his side, as he felt faint and dizzy, but he did not let this stop him. He ran to the end of the alley and looked out to see Mavrik entering the tavern already. The siren continued to ring out through the city, adding an eerie effect. There were not any guards nearby; however, Gavner knew that they would be here soon.

Gavner and Koli looked at each other, nodded, and both ran across the way at the same time. They ran so fast that any onlookers would have simply seen a dark streak to the tavern. But when they got in, they were greeted by eerie silence, and an empty tavern, save one. It was the captain that they had met on their way in, Ferd, and even he was on his way up to the quarters.

“Ferd,” Gavner said as the captain almost was out of view up the steps, “Wait up!”

The captain stopped and looked back over his shoulder. But suddenly, everything was blocked out as Gavner received a mental transmission from Drake.

[Gavner,] he said, [We have not secured passage to Raiaera, if you can do so I suggest you do it quickly! The angels and I are at the south pier. Godspeed.]

“Xzcunge!” The vampire cursed, “Ferd, can we call in a favor, in the Christmas spirit?”

“Well, what do yeh boys need?” He asked.

“Passage to Raiaera,” he said, bluntly. “That siren is for us.”

“Michael,” Ferd called up the stairs, “Ready the crew, we leave tonight! Send em’ all to my cargo schooner on the south pier.”

“As fer you sonney boys,” he said addressing the three travelers, “Yeh got ter make it to the south pier, but yeh gotta take the main way. The crew needs a distraction ta get to the ship safely.”

“Will do, sir!” Gavner said. Gavner walked over to Mavrik who had already had the crisp, old notary map spread out on a wooden table.

“This is a suicide mission,” Mavrik said, looking at Gavner with a straight face.

“Of course,” Gavner said, looking at his friend, trying to remain the same. Gavner cracked a smile first.

“For humans…”

Drake burst into the place of refuge, and looked around, relieved to find that there was nobody inside.

[Gabriel,] Drake broadcasted telepathically to his friend, [I’m here. Come quickly, please.]

[On our way,] Gabriel said back. Drake looked at the wall of the tavern, the siren still clear out in the night. This tavern was nearly dark, save for the light of a few candles. The oil lanterns were not lit; this tavern must have closed for the night when the sirens came on.

Suddenly, the golden silhouettes of Drake’s friends began to form and they teleported in from the astral plane. Gabriel came in with his short hair, and a billowy shirt with a leather courset as armor, and black trousers. At his belt was a tube that carried his golden message scroll. Gabriel was the messenger arcangel of The Boss, and this special scroll was a direct communication link with the cosmos.

Seraphina, the most beautiful feminine form that Drake had ever seen, teleported in wearing a long traveling cloak with her hood down, and the same dark trousers that Gabriel had been wearing. Her long curly blonde hair fell to her shoulders, the headpiece of laurel and flowers still atop her crown. She was incredibly pretty, but Drake always tried to hide his feelings from his friends.

“Did you find passage?” Drake asked.

“Unfortunately we did not,” Seraphina replied, “However, we did find out that there are scores upon scores of men coming to this place to protect it.”

“How does that help us?” Drake asked jokingly.

“There will inevitably be a physical, outward struggle.” Gabriel said.

“You two are just full of a bunch of good news aren’t you?”

“We cannot take lives either. Perhaps your friends, can, but we can only be supporting forces. We are not allowed to take lives unless it is that of a very unrighteous person who was condemned anyway.” Seraphina said.

“Well that shouldn’t be a problem with the Radasanth guards,” Drake said. “So, attack plan?”

“We can create forms of barricades to help your friends, if you would like.” Gabriel said.

“My friends!” Drake said alarmed, remembering that they had not secured passage. Concentrating on sending a message to his friend, Drake closed his eyes and reached out to Gavner telepathically.

[Gavner,] he said, [We have not secured passage to Raiaera, if you can do so I suggest you do it quickly! The angels and I are at the south pier. Godspeed.]

“Okay,” Mavrik said, “If we are going to pull this off, we need to be everywhere.”

“Almost like guerilla warfare!” Gavner said.

“We need to make it seem like there are a million of us.”

“Even though there are only three of us.” Gavner finished. “Okay, so over here and here we can collapse these pillars,” Gavner said pointing to the sides of a street on the map.

“And if we take the panes of glass off of those windows, we can use candles and lanterns to make flashing lights all down these streets that will disorient the soldiers.”

“And if we take some liquor bottles, we can make Molotov’s. One of us can be on top of the buildings sending the pyrotechnics down in the streets-“

“While the others stay down here in the shadows making it seem like there’s an army.” Mavrik finished.

“Let us do this!”

Koli looked out over the Radasanth streets from high upon the rooftops. Usually the streets were bustling and full in the daytime, and during the night, a hush overcame the city. But this was different. This was as the calm before the storm, as the silence was eerie and the inevitable was impending. Koli narrowed his eyes as he prepared himself, and his heart for what was to come.

The priest looked across the way and saw Gavner shine the moonlight across the road on the reflection of a small piece of glass, to signal his readiness. Mavrik made a soft bird noise to signal his as well. Koli lit a small flame and held it up over his head before extinguishing it. Then came the waiting. The siren rang out through the air, but with every second passing it sounded like it was growing louder and more raspy. Louder and louder, more and more shrill. Looking out over the rooftops, Koli saw men climb up onto the buildings to first provide rooftop support. The priest drew his hood, and summoned a deadly, plain, and crisp longsword in his right hand. He walked over to the trap door that lead to the roof on which he was standing. As soon as the door opened, Koli kicked it down, knocking the man out cold. From there he turned to the next roof, got a running start, and silently landed on the next one. Sneaking up on the man as a deadly assailant, Koli struck his foe in the leg with his sword, and delivered a powerful blow directly to a knock out pressure point on the back of his skull. Koli chose to spare the lives of those who wished to kill him this night, because it was better to spare them than to end them.

Gavner saw Koli working his way through the tops of the buildings, slowly clearing of all of the rooftops without anybody even noticing. The creature of the night looked across the way at Mavrik as they were preparing themselves for the fight. They looked out in the distance, and noticed the first ranks of guards coming their way. Just as they reached about one hundred yards, Koli had the rooftops cleared, and they were ready for phase two of the plan. All they had to do now was wait.

The guards continued to march on, closer and closer. Out in the streets, they saw- ranks upon ranks of guards coming their way. They must have known that the assault was on the chancellor, because it seemed that the entire Corone army stationed in Radasanth was now prowling the streets. Scores of men were now all in the streets, and they finally overtook their position. Gavner looked at the stone he was next to, the keystone in the bridge over the way that lead to the south pier. He suddenly heard Mavrik’s signal, and without hesitation, he struck with all of his might, sending the massive boulder out into the street.

Just as Mavrik did the same to his side, the bridge no longer had any support, and subsequently came tumbling down on the entire army, showing no mercy. Cries of horror and screams of fright came from the army, and all hell broke loose. Gavner slid into the shadows of the buildings, and began to grab guards one by one in the streets, assassinating each as he went on. Suddenly, phase three of the plan came, and the flashing lanterns were lit. Instantly, the streets were illuminated with blindingly bright, flashing lights. It was as if they had walked into a rave, as it was as if strobe lights were illuminating the entire area. Suddenly, flaming bottles were raining down from the sky, and when they landed they exploded in firey rage, setting entire sections of the streets ablaze. The scene had erupted into complete and utter chaos. The guards now had no order, and no longer were holding rank. Everybody was running around, striking each other in fear that all were the enemy. Friend, foe, it mattered not, for all were targets.

Gavner looked out, satisfied, at the scene. Their work here was done, and this should hold them off for at least a while. He jumped up on top of one of the stones and began to scale the rubble of the bridge. He was over the massive rocks, and on the other side. He rendezvoused with Koli and Mavrik, and once his friends were with him, Gavner started down the road to the road where he saw the figure of a tall boy with blonde hair, and two other people on either side of him- one a woman with blonde curly hair, and the other a man with short dark hair.

“Drake!” Gavner said, “It is great to see you!”

“I could say the same about you!” He replied, “Prepare yourself, we are going to hold them off here, you go and ensure passage to the schooner for the crew!”

Drake, Gabriel and Seraphina walked out onto the street, and just as they did they saw a captain walking the street.

“Hey, sonny boy!” He called out to Drake, “Yeh wouldn’t happen to be friends with that odd bunch roaming the streets would yeh?” He asked.

“You mean two tall men with black teeth and a priest in a white cloak?” Drake replied.

“Yes them!”

“I do know them, sir!” Drake replied.

“Well good, cuz yeh got passage on my schooner. But I need a favor from yeh!” He said, “We need the crew to get to the ship safely! So if yeh fellas will, please keep the road clear ‘n protect ‘em all.”

“Yes sir!” Drake said energetically. Instantly, he was extremely happy and relieved. Unfortunately, he was not able to solicit passage, but his friends had been successful! He would eagerly protect these men. Just then, he saw in the distance that chaos was ensuing the streets off in the distance. The bridge that was over the passage to the south pier had collapsed, blinding lights were flashing all throughout the streets, and fire licking the alley. Gavner, Koli, and Mavrik had done their job. This was probably enough to stall them for quite a time, but not enough for the entire crew to ready the ship. There was going to be a struggle. Drake noticed three silhouettes approaching him and his friends.

“Drake!” Gavner called out. “It is great to see you!”

Drake was so relieved to see his friends! It felt like it had been so long since they had actually been together. “I could say the same about you!” He replied, “Prepare yourself, we are going to hold them off here, you go and ensure passage to the schooner for the crew!”

“Very well! Are you ready?” Mavrik replied.

“Absolutely!”

Koli pointed across to the northeast of the dock, on the opposite side of the collapsed bridge.

“You better be boys,” Gavner called, “Because we have got some company!! To the shadows!”

They all fled to the cover of darkness. Drake knew that the crew was secretly traveling through the taverns, but it would have to be all of their jobs to keep the army from reaching the buildings. Instantly, in one large clash, the vampires began attacking. It was as if time itself slowed down for the creatures of the night. Their nature was eerie and interesting, as the world seemed to be at their command. They were nothing but dark streaks, rushing from assailant to assailant, before any could react. They were dead before they even had the chance to look their killers in the eyes.

Drake stood back, ready to heal in case the occasion called for it- he was a healer rather than a fighter. He hadn’t found it in himself yet to take a life, but he had saved many.

Koli

The guards stormed the convoy all at once, and Koli proceeded to continue his work, smiting each foe not by the head or the heart, but by the leg. He was a flash of white, showing mercy, but being relentless. While the vampires struck to kill, Koli struck to save, even if he was maiming and injuring. Soon, however, the army came too numerous, and they were forced to retreat a bit. Foe after foe fell, but for every one which was defeated, two stepped up to take his place. They kept being pushed back until they were at a tavern that was on the line of shops. Suddenly, Koli heard Ferd’s old man voice ring out through the night.

“The ship is ready for yeh boys, come on let’s get outta here!”

Upon hearing this, neither Drake, Koli, Gavner, nor Mavrik needed any more word. They all turned and ran down the pier. They were all much more fit, and none of them were wearing armor so they ran much faster than the army; however, it still would not be fast enough to prevent them from boarding. Koli could see, far ahead of them, the ship that had its sails and its flags hoisted high and was ready to leave. The boarding ramp was ready to be drawn, and when it was, the schooner would be off and on its way. They slowly began to close the distance, until finally they reached the ramp. Ferd was at the top, frantically motioning to them to climb aboard. Koli looked over his shoulder as he was boarding and noticed the army closing in very fast, and that was when he heard the artillery fire.

Apparently Ferd had ordered the cannons to be manned, and now the ship was unleashing hell’s fury upon the Radasanth guard. Upon this, the guard began to retreat and search for cover. The archers began to release arrows and storm upon the army, and Ferd laughed triumphantly.

“Ol’ Ferd has some tricks yet left up his sleeve, sonney boys!” Ferd said. “Now draw that board!”

Without thinking, Gavner, Drake, Mavrik and Koli all drew the boarding ramp, and they did it in one swift motion. They all had underestimated their strength, as all together they were the equivalent of an entire crew of sailors. Ferd’s eyes widened, and he looked at them shocked, and noticed that the entire was following suit.

“Well what are yeh waiting for?” He called out, “Send her out boys!!”
