I myself am a gamer at heart, so please post any video games you have enjoyed and share in case anyone else enjoys delving into video games too! I'm always looking for good games to try, as others may also. New or old. One of my top favs is Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

If you have a Switch, get Golf Story.

It's Mario Golf meets Earthbound.

One of the first things you do is peg a small child in the face with a golf ball to save him from swimming in a 'gator-infested lagoon. 10/10 GOTY.

I spent many hours on the Vigilante games and Metal Gear Solid back in the day. Also Chrono Trigger! All are top notch in my opinion. Final Fantasy IX is one of my favs in that series. I definitely need to try Golf Story! xD Another of my all-time favorites is Legend of the Dragoon.

Lufia II - Rise of the Sinistrals is a tragically underrated RPG on the SNES that understandably didn't get the shine of FFII/III (4/6) or the Chrono games, but is really just an absolute blast.

Shadowrun is an amazing game for BOTH SNES and Genesis; two very different but uniquely enjoyable games. I've played the SNES version a billion times.

Did anyone have a hard time with Rygar for NES? I used to get so frustrated with that game. Total arm flailing and screaming at the t.v.-like. I have to add that for sheer difficulty with the lives available with that game on NES. Definitely worth my awesomeness standard for irritating the hell out of me.

Civilization, Age of Empires, Total War. Those are some of my favorite PC franchises.

Tales of Maj'Eyal is a roguelike game into which I've sunk a ton of hours. Roguelikes are a niche genre, but if you like them, ToME is probably my favorite of the bunch.

Spelunky is a platformer/roguelike mashup that fits in with the 'hard game' discussion you were having. You will die.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is terrific. Favorite game in a long, long time.

I also dig the classics from the SNES days. Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3, Kirby Superstar. Metroid is another, albeit one I never got into myself.

If you want something extremely difficult, check out some kaizo hacks for Super Mario World. Very hard, very frustrating, but very rewarding when you make progress.

Ninja Gaiden gets name-dropped, but no love for the far-superior Vice: Project Doom? :(

Also, The Guardian Legend (NES) is a mix of Gradius, Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. Highly recommended.

I didn't like Vice as much as NG, because I didn't play it as a kid. They're both obviously dated, so nostalgia has a value.

I didn't like the driving at ALL in Vice, and the side-scrolling felt like a weird Batman/Contra hybrid to me, where you get the mediocre weapons of Batman with the wild bosses from Contra.

It's a good game, but came out too late to get the acclaim.

Lots of good games on this list, no need to repeat, but I'll toss one out I haven't seen yet:

Rimworld.

A base-builder, it's similar to Dwarf Fortress (without the difficulty of trying to figure out which Unicode symbol means "wheelbarrow") and allows you a pretty high degree of freedom in crafting whatever life you'd like for your colonists.

I've had one game where I worked as the paragon of the people, healing any tribespeople who attacked me and sending them back to their people to speak my praises. I would recuperate them in my Tier1 medical facility, complete with bionic legs and eyes and whatever else they lost in the fight between their spears and my plasma rifles.

On the other hand .... there was definitely one game where we huddled in the frozen tundra, dug our way into a mountain, and started manufacturing cocaine grown in hydroponics vats to support our quest for world domination. And in that one, we preferred to harvest the organs of people who attacked us, and their tribes never saw them again.

Certainly morally ambiguous, very open-ended, and a ton of fun.

Garron
10-11-2017, 06:19 PM
Rimworld seems interesting, Zeph. Another of my irritation games to pile on the list is Ghost & Goblins. It also deserves my awesome standard for irritating the hell out of me.

Great game model; side scrolling RPG type action game. I just found that a lot of the bosses are just INSANELY difficult. It's fine for emulation, but on console it gets incredibly annoying.

It goes without saying that GTA - Vice City is the best game ever made, correct?

Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa... That is one heck of a callout, mister. If you're trying to stir up discussion my bonnet off to you, good sir.

I can concede that GTA Vice City is a contender for one of the best games ever made. It might be in the top ten but on what grounds is it the best game ever? You're gonna have to back up that lofty statement with some facts, some proof.

Besides, what's the criteria for the best game ever made? Gameplay like none other? Most well written story with player influence on how the plot progresses and resolves? Player choice and freedom? Most memorable characters or a character creator so robust you can be anyone you want to be? Groundbreaking mechanics or graphics, mind-boggling puzzles or skill-dependent platforming? The perfect balance of frustration and challenge that bestows a feeling of euphoria once the game is overcome? Soundtrack? Voice acting? How influential they were on their target audience or other games made afterward? Replayability or how fond your memory of it is years down the road?

Hmm... so difficult to choose one best game of all time. I'll have to think long and hard about it.

In my opinion Rockstar's best work to date would be Red Dead Redemption, but I still wouldn't call it the best game of all time.

Let's consider this one. GTA:VC came out for the PS2 and Xbox, with "good" to "great" graphics within its generation. We need to put graphics in perspective, since time is a flat circle and the only thing that continually improves is resolution.

My case for GTA:VC: Open World Exploration, mixed beautifully with loads of side quests, a driving central story, and boundless collectibles. GTA:VC wasn't the first to do this, but at its time was far and away the best. Humor - With Ray Liotta as the main voice, tons of talented voice actors, and fantastic writing, this game is objectively hilarious. Music - The 80's music on the various tracks gives you HOURS and HOURS of fun, just driving around. If you can't run from the cops in a Ferrari after stealing drugs with "Rush, Rush, Get The Yayo", or enjoy screwing and murdering hookers to "Billie Jean", honestly just get the fuck out of my face. Vehicles - easy driving controls, with unique handling for over 100 different cars. Dirt bikes that can almost fly. Motorcycles that send you 200 MPH. Dozens of monstrous hidden jumps. Countless tricks to be performed. Weapons - Rocket Launchers, Sniper Rifles, Chainsaws, Flamethrowers, and Uzi's with a special "drive-by" feature. Outrageously awesome. Secrets - More of them than you can imagine. Collectible (PORN!) film reels, secret jumps, secret mini games, rampages, car collection mini games, and so much more. The secrets feel ENDLESS here. Best of Its Time - There were some other games of the generation which were essentially copycats. Some of these (Scarface, The Godfather) were quite good, but don't come CLOSE to competing. The only game I can think of that similarly separated itself would be FF7, a far more flawed game.

These are only a few, but we're already at "enough". THE. BEST. EVER.

Rockstar's business approach was pure genius, no doubt about it.

They looked upon the gaming offerings available at the time and saw damsels in distress that needed saving (Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) and realized there should be more to the gaming industry than pleasing kids and geeks. While there was much that they learned from their predecessors especially with regard to how a three-dimensional world should even function - having to break away from top-down 2D side-scrolling (GTA 1 & 2) - they understood they could bring something completely different to the table that appealed to a mainstream, "cooler" audience of males.

They were - and still are I think - a company that creates games during a time of equalizing women's rights, the blending of societal gender roles both in the workplace and in the home and depression among men coming to the fore more than ever before. Back then it was obvious that the majority of gamers were male and many of those men felt emasculated by progressing times (automation, white collar work), college debt and falling wages, lack of role models or transitional rituals into manhood and manliness becoming associated with oppression.

Men no longer felt as fundamental or as necessary as they had always been. They weren't the pillar, the rock that all of society was built around. That left a void inside them that they needed to fill. There was a need to feel in control again, feel importance, like they could do anything that they wanted. Like nobody could tell them no.

Rockstar made a killing (17.5 million units of GTA: Vice City sold worldwide by early 2008) preying upon feelings of inadequacy and the insecurities of men. They gave them exactly what they asked for, a playground when men were kings. Poured on as much testosterone fuel as they could, over a hundred different vehicles, more than enough weapons to murder anyone you want, collectible porn and completely fuckable, killable prostitutes as you say.

Genius, really. I wish I was smart enough at the time to exploit the male population in such a way. GTA V sold 12 million units in its first day to the tune of $800 million in sales, over 90 million units sold recorded to date. Sounds like retirement to me. It's hard to argue, the numbers are all there - it's exactly what the paying customer wants. Although Rockstar hasn't reached the towering heights of Mojang (Minecraft, 144 million units sold) or Elektronorgtechnica (Tetris, 177 million units sold).

Vice City is a great game, for all the reasons you describe - more so the open world exploration and secret finding in my opinion - and I'd personally rate it a 9 out of 10. It's that good, but in a way it misses the mark when it comes to Best Game Ever Made. Playing it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I think you should feel proud to play the Best Game Ever Made with anybody, even your grandma. I know I'd have an unusual amount of trouble sharing anything GTA with my grandma.

That said I've nothing against ladies of the night in games. The Witcher I, II & III were some of the best gaming I've ever had and those games were filled with sex. It might have been Geralt's amnesia, or maybe my interpretation of him, but Geralt had a certain respect for women in a medieval world that treated women like shit. He was submissive to women, and they would often use him for sexual pleasures or otherwise. He'd often defend women's rights or encourage women to do what they want. He rebelled against injustices, didn't create them.

Maybe you're right though. I just don't enjoy murdering hookers.

If you've never heard of the game A Plague Tale and you have a generous amount of fortitude, I would 10/10 recommend it as one of my favorite games of new gen consoles. I guess it really depends on how much you like getting eaten by rats. *shrugs*

Damn. I forgot all about the Doom coming out recently. Thanks for reminding me, Shin! I've always enjoyed the Doom goods. I've played Payday, and it's fun.

Fallout is good stuff and so is Dragon Quest! I've never heard of A Plaque Tale before, but I looked into it and you plucked at my gamer heart strings with that one. I LOOOOVE that horror stuff!

I have two new games to order. Thanks to both of you!

I'm no longer rping on this site anymore. That all being said many of you guys know I play a lot of stuff.

I'm a HUGE fan of World of Warcraft. It is the main game I play now.

I have tons of games on my Steam account and on my PS4 maybe later on I'll allow some of you cats to add me.

I may have said this before: I;m a HUGE Final Fantasy dork.

My games are also mainly rpg types. The entire (Just about) Shin Megami seires, Persona series (I am not a huge fan of Persona 5 my favorite is 3 closely followed by 1 and 2. Four was okay)

SMT Nocturne is one of my all time favorite rpgs.

Those are a few of my jams. Anybody who wants to chat with me, I'm on Discord and Facebook. My stopping to write on here is my choice there's nothing to try to discuss about that but anything else yall wanna talk about is fine. Hit me up and say hi whenever I am almost always around yall stay cool.

Are you playing Classic at all, Nosdyn? Or just the retail version?

Nosdyn

Hey Night I was never part of the Classic hype train.

It has things it did REALLY well that the retail version currently lacks a LOT of.

But when TBC servers go live THAT I will invest reasonable amounts of time on. Thats the expac I start on. To show you how NOT hype I was for Classic WOW I still don't have a single level 60 yet.

It is okay though everybody plays those games at their own pace you feel me?

But yeah mainly retail for me. I AM hype for Shadowlands got that on preorder yo.

I'mm play the crap out that and go back and pick up a lot of Achivement's I'm still missing and have been working on.

Either way nice to see fellow WoWers on here. I know like Classic I am very noob at still.

My highest is on VERGE of level 40 and is a Undead Warlock.

But like...interest my dood is very real for me.

If a game (Doesn't matter who made the game or what franchise it's a part of) but if it cannot hold my interest for more than like an hourish at a time, that game is dead in the water to me anyway.

Classic I STILL do wanna max out at least a couple of toons...but no rush. Expac I started on was TBC THAT I am hyped to all hell for. Mainly classic Achievements mattering again hahah. Anyway real pleasure sharing some of this with ya!

See ya around on the forums mate.

Sekiro is good.

Kadir-Sekiro is a interesting series I know about it.

I'm personally a huge fan of Dark Souls series myself and it is my understanding Sekiro was loosely inspired by Souls series.

I been playing Souls since old school Demon's Souls...should be a lot of fun getting back into DS 3 I have that on my PS4.

Either way excellent game suggestions.

I have huge issues with the remake.

Graphically beautiful but I feared they would change shit, and after THAT final battle and cutscene I wasnt wrong.

If you are making a remake, stick to the source material.

Nosdyn

Chris I will disagree with you.

I think they DID stick to the source material the things that were changed were to make more of a ARPG type of thing which is what they wanted.

No way in HELL Square was going to do an exact carbon copy of the original game they had to add stuff to it from a design perspective.

I personally dislike the art direction they chose but that's personal opinion/preference.

The game was not going to please everyone and I agree with that one point.

I am going to stress though a Remake of this caliber was going to add a LOT of stuff to the basic foundation if you're salty that's fine.

I'm just adding my own thoughts to this I think...the game will inherently have flaws. But to be salty over it? Probably not. My only issue is the art direction is almost laughable oppressive. However, adjusting the brightness of the game made it much more tolerable for me.

I also found turning the voice volume ALL the way off helped me too cause primarily Barret's voice is not tolerable.

I feel like if you're going to critique a game critique it don't just be salty about it.

I know me personally I KNEW they weren't going to do a carbon copy I am okay with that.

Remake was a chance for them to expand upon what was already an immense foundation. If you like it or not is entirely subjective.

As a veteran of BOTH the og FF 7 and Crisis Core for PSP I agree with Square's choice here to make it ARPG. Turn based would not have worked (In my opinion) for this project.

So be salty...I hear Reddit is a good place for those types of opinions. :)

I know me...I am willing to set my own views on Remake aside for the simple point it's FF7 and this is likely on this caliber and scale never going to happen again.

I'm still very very early in the game but I have a pretty good idea they are going to keep a lot of what we know happened in Crisis Core that's just my feedback on the game so far, I will add more as we develop this convo saltiness included. But yeah I think that they are building more upon on Crisis Core's engine and what not. But yeah it was going to be more ARPG from the get go anyway.

If you look at ALL of the current FF games...they are all ARPG style anyway.

I THINK Square is going for a more ARPG style of stuff anyway versus going Turn Based. Just my thoughts on this subject.

Just checking in.

About 20 hours into the FF7 Remake. It is a next-level good videogame. Some people are thrown off (kind of understandably) by a new featured character who... has the personality of an over the top anime villain and does feel a bit out of place, but it occurs during such an emotionally charged and unexpected segment of the game that you're sort of like... "Excuse me, I was in the middle of something," and you beat him up and get back to more important things. I admit I found it a bit jarring but if it was the worst part about the game, then the worst part of the game isn't so bad, and everything else is spectacular. I can no stress enough how much FF7R is the game that I've been waiting patiently for for almost 20 years and did not disappoint.

Oh, Happy Easter Christians.

In fairness I feel like my original assessment was harsh and agree with you on a lot of the above. I'm unfortunately one of these silly purists, but that being said what they have done far outweighs any minor adjustments to the plot.

The fact the game is episodic didnt sit well with me at first but what it has done is made sure the previously inaccessible areas like Midgar can be explored in a way it couldn't have been previously. I clocked up forty full hours just on Midgar. That's insane - my entire FF7 master file back on PS 1 was 72 hours and that's with EVERYTHING done.

I realize with some points I make too I can also come off a little harsh as well...I don't intend to it is just a manner of writing/speaking.

That being said...MY own issues with the game are the virtually oppressive art style they picked. I realize they were going for a much more noir style setting and environment. But like...what worked FOR ME was setting up the brightness somewhat higher. (Guys I have really REALLY sensitive eyes hahah)

Also again my main gripe is the voice acting too. Barret primarily could have benefited better from a much more serious voice actor instead of the guy they DID choose whose like really god damned obnoxious.

Setting this in Japanese helped me out. ALSO turned voice volume completely off also helped.

I don't yet have the entire game installed but I am making progress gradually once I DO though I am going to invest considerable time into it.

I'll drop you guys more thoughts and commentary once I am farther in. Other games of note I am working on installing is Path of Exile which I am a huge fan of.

But yeah guys I was in fact able to Stagger (A certain boss we are all fond of. Guard Scorpion) and I absolutely DESTROYED this guy from my knowledge of the Crisis Core systems alone.

I got I think 2-3 staggers off of that one encounter alone. I have not yet started messing with Punisher stance yet...but I hear its nuts as hell.

This is probably a long shot, but does anyone play Marvel Strikeforce on Mobile?
