“Oh them?” He chuckled, flexing his hand. “They follow me whenever I’m in the club. Don’t mind them a bit. Come right this way… can we get you a drink or anything?”

“Scotch and soda,” I said. I wasn’t really drinking those days, but it would be rude to refuse their hospitality.

“Coming right up,” the manager of the Maison said. He signalled to a server and repeated Josh’s order when the young woman came over. She clacked away, her heavy high heels the most significant article she wore.

“This place is just for the proles,” Jasper said, beckoning for me to follow him further into the vast, vaulted-ceiling building. He nodded at the people seated in the entry hall. “These are the poorer folk who can’t afford the kind of full access you’re about to experience.” He laughed as he saw my gaze swing back to the girls on the couches. “That’s a mere amuse-bouche for the meal you’ll find inside, my friend.”

He put his arm around my shoulders like we were old friends. I allowed him to move me further into the club, ignoring the greasiness of his touch. The mission I’d accepted was to broker a relationship for trade between the Maison and some Fallieni wholesalers of spice and potion ingredients. I considered the liquid and sniffed it again. Still cinnamon and mystery.

The half-orcs spoke to one another behind their hands and then both chuckled. The server looked around. Jasper watched me expectantly.

“Go on,” he said again. “Here, I’ll take one to. That way you know I’m not trying to take advantage of you in negotiations.” He picked up a jar and held it out in a toast.

I didn’t like consuming unknown potions, but I wasn’t about to fail my mission because I wouldn’t play along with their games. I clinked jars with Jasper and downed the potion.

I paused at a red door with the numbers ‘303’ embellished on it. I gave a small knock. There were sounds of movement before a male drow in his early twenties answered the door with naught but a towel around his waist. “What?” his silver eyes glanced up and down my form. The guy disappeared then returned a few seconds later and shoved a small pouch of coins in my hand, I gave him the potions in exchange. I didn’t need to count them. Hell the pouch had way more than that in there.

I continued like this down the rest of the dimly lit hall. Always charging more so I could skim a hefty chunk off the top. Thaynes know I’d need it. It pissed me off how she was so carefree, but at th same time - how could I be so mad when she only had so many damn years on this hellhole of a planet?

I snorted, now was not the time to get sentimental. Now was the time to get drunk and count my coin.

Rooms 301-305 were free. They were the premium ones, all sorts of shit in there, and probably the only rooms that were thoroughly cleaned. They had to be. Fuck knows what went on in there. I passed them then down the red carpeted stairs and into Jaspers office.

I sighed as I headed straight to the desk in the corner. Throwing myself into the chair.I rocked back on the chair, throwing my feet up onto the small corner desk. Jensen kept the good Alcohol in the third draw, along with a few crystal glasses. Used it to schmooze his business guests. I was technically a business guest. Hell. I made all the potions he asked for, I sold them, I laced them with nicotine - I did it all. Whatever he asked.

I was in the middle of pouring myself another when the door opened.

“What, is the man next to you? Several hundred years old?”

She turned to the multi-coloured vials. “Heating salves, cooling salves...you know -erotic sensory bullshit. Paralytics cause that's what some like these days. The place’s specialty, ‘Love Potion’ aphrodisiacs…” she trailed off. “Stiffeners and wetteners for those who can’t quite get it going. The usual.”

Her eyes narrowed as she was forced back against the desk. Her soft feline ears swivelled forward. Her cheeks glowed with a faint red tinge. “If you were downstairs then the love potion is a mix of several components but the main three are a mild addictive formula, an aphrodisiac and a chemical that blocks the inhibitors within your noggin’. Now, why the fuck would I want to do a thing like that without some sorta reason?” She pushed back, half heartedly as I held my stance and tightened the grip on her chin. She was playing coy. “Because I understand they rent rooms at this establishment,” I said, feeling a placebo of desire mount within since she had told me about the aphrodisiac. “Rooms that come well-equipped. Breaker turned to the lamp and turned it back on. Well, I did tell him to put it on if he wanted. That was my fault.
