Name: Albel Rofasi
Age: 28
Race: Human
Hair Color: Grey
Eye Color: Blue
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 135 lbs.
Occupation: Pirate Captain
Appearance: Albel's thin, curvy and attractive figure don't necessarily lean towards her being a ferocious pirate; however, at this point, she really isn't as ferocious as before so it fits. She keeps her gray hair in dreadlocks, which almost reach her shoulders. She prefers to keep her head bare these days, so no hat or hair adornments. She does wear a nice reddish-brown tweed coat over the ubiquitous white linen pirate shirt, as well as brown trousers and brown shoes people swear came from a male pirate captain. A leather belt keeps her trousers up during intense fighting.
History: Albel Rofasi grew up in Cartagena, Colombia, the daughter of British pirates living as civilians under Spanish rule. Her parents left the British Navy and became pirates for the glory of it and to stake their claim for treasures; they soon fell under the command of a Spanish galleon as spies for the Spanish Crown. There they toured the Americas looting British naval ships for treasure, love, and more treasure. As the Crown paid for their services, they remained part of a pirate crew for at least ten years before giving it up.
Her parents actually met as part of separate crews. Her father, Raynard Butler, belonged to Captain Serrano’s ship, the Mercado, when it overtook the British Main, a pirate ship masquerading as a merchant vessel. His future wife, Alyssa Masteed, sat among the captured. The two fell in love rather quickly and married during another battle shortly thereafter, for the thrill of it.
As Spain controlled most of the Caribbean at this point, the British soon found enough reason to attack their Gulf of Mexico territories. As Spanish ships fell under the attacks of British naval firepower, many surviving pirates jumped ship, so to speak, and were granted protection from their new bosses and inducted as Spanish citizens. Albel’s parents left after their ship capsized while in port in Colombia. As a result, they moved to Cartagena and lived the rest of their lives there.
Albel grew up knowing the back alleys; she understood them like the back of her hand by the time she became an adult. Of the course of her life, she heard wonderful stories from her parents about pirates and wonderful treasures beyond the seas. A number of them, she deduced later on, were fanciful tales from merchants and other pirates, mere tall-tales from who knows where. She distinctly remembered the Eye of Poseidon story, about a whirlpool that supposedly sent ships to the World Beyond.
Before long, she noticed a few things that didn’t add up. Albel discounted the notion of demons, angels and other supernatural life as mere fairy tales. Fairy godmothers and shape-shifting kitsune from the East didn’t exist, right? Well, she found herself increasingly noticing some of them. The bazaar in Cartagena, for example, wound up having a kitsune working one of the foods stands—namely the fried food stand (she saw him briefly transform from fox to human form).
She saw Death overlooking a man killed in an alley after being mugged, if only faintly and for a few seconds. Before long, she saw faint images of angels and demons, but by the age of 18, they disappeared. With her parents’ stories ingrained in her mind, she set out to be a pirate as her parents were. She quickly joined the Verazano as it left Colombia for Port Royal, where it became embroiled in an attack from its British rival William the Conquerer.
Her skills and enthusiasm earned her a few points in the pirate community. She reached the rank of captain at age 28 while aboard the ship the De Soto. A British captain, by the name of Arthur Morrigan, commanded the Spanish ship like some Spanish pirate vessel at the time. He prided himself in being a for-hire, which gave him the freedom to be where he wanted and offered prices he found comfortable. While he was generally skillful (being captain wasn’t easy), he fell under the blade of the captain of the Merchant’s Seal, a pirate ship working for the British.
Albel, then his trusted quartermaster, took the reigns as captain. Arthur gave her a trinket as something to remember him by: a map where a treasure was supposedly buried. Unfortunately, the quartermaster she appointed felt disillusioned by the captain’s death and became a turncoat. While everyone else slept, the quartermaster, one John Validor, absconded with the map and gave it to the captain of the Merchant’s Seal. The next day, the Seal was on its way to the eastern end of Haiti in search of local gold.
As these things go, it had a curse on it. However, it had a curse for one reason: it was under the jurisdiction of the Curse System of Hell. Heaven and Hell both used computers to keep track of the good-and-evil balance of the Mortal Realm. The upcoming battle placed the Curse System once again in the path of pirates. It’s said that so many curses get sent to pirates that it must’ve overrun the server; this one certainly didn’t help.
The two ships collided in battle near Haiti. At that point, the Seal left Port-au-Prince with the chest in hand. In the ensuing battle, the De Soto sank to the briny deep near the Carolinas, an unusually long chase up the coast. Here Albel confirmed her worst fear: the Eye of Poseidon existed. It also confirmed a fear she never knew she had: that curses are transferable, and the Curse System isn’t perfect. The ship sunk and, due to an unfortunate bug, transferred the treasure’s curse to them as they sank through the Eye.
Albel woke up, alone, on the beach of an unknown continent. She woke up, spitting out sea water and noticed none of her crew around her. She assumed the worst and believed they died; they came back to confirm this. Well, three of them did, anyway. The navigator, a cannoneer, and an orphan who snuck on board (Arthur Fang, Sera Slyphon and Tim Rimsy, respectively) followed her somehow, if in spirit form. They realize they’re dead, and Albel soon realizes she can actually see and hear spirits.
She learns from a note left from Hell’s computer system, which journeyed with her, that she may now speak one of the native tongues as a means of apologizing while they find a way to return her home. She also realizes, through the same note, her crew cannot be saved from their curse while in this new world. Meanwhile, they can help her escape by possessing her and granted her some abilities.
Skills: She came equipped with swordsmanship for her rapier and appropriate skills for her pistol. What many don't know is her secret: her crew, now dead and in need of redemption, possess her and grant her abilities dependent on their lot in life. She can also see spirits and communicate with them, but as with chatting with human beings, she has to convince them to possess her and *leave* after possessing her if she wants anything done. Below are known abilities granted by her three 'surviving' crew members in this world:
1. Arthur Fang: Ability to create an enter door and exit door to locations (must specify location of both, thus often limited to what she can see or knows); slightly improves acrobatic skills
2. Sera Slyphon: The Sucker Punch (a punch so powerful, it sends an opponent sailing; leaves Albel open and prone for a few moments; also harmful to Albel if performed multiple times in rapid succession)
3. Tim Rimsy: Can climb on walls and other surfaces with her hands and legs (won’t negate harm received from poison, spikes and other environmental hazards); improved jump and acrobatic skills; improved thieving skills
She can only be possessed by one spirit at a time; she has the ability to link with a spirit's thoughts once they're inside, as well as exert some force on them and get them out of her body.
She is also adept at sea, able to commander a ship and order a crew around if needed. She also came with some lock-picking abilities, if not lock-picking tools, in the event of an emergency.
Equipment: The clothes on her back include a tweed jacket, white linen shirt, belt, boots and common trousers. She also comes with a satchel filled with miscellaneous items. They include a map to Haiti, a compass, an extra undershirt, and a note from Hell that explained her situation. In her brain exists an implant that allows her to speak Tradespeak, but not more languages from Althanas, Hell's way of apologizing for the inconvenience.
She has no armor to speak of, aside from the clothes on her back, and her pistol sank with the ship so it is not on her person. Her only weapon so far is her rapier, which she keeps in her belt when not in use.
