I do. I'm completely psyched about the fight night tomorrow, specifically the main event: Georges St-Pierre vs. Matt Hughes. These are two of my all-time favourite fighters completing a trinity of battles, the first two of which were some of the most exciting matches I've ever seen.

Does anyone else watch UFC, or have any predictions for tomorrow night? I have a pretty specific one, so I'm gonna wait to see if anyone else is interested before I post it.

I watch UFC but I haven't been following it closely lately. Personally I'm more excited about Liddel vs. Silva since both guys have put on some exciting fights and I'm a huge Liddel fan.

IMO Liddel and Silva are both washed up; neither are ever going to get the title again. It'll be interesting to see who wins, but the fight of the night will be GSP-Hughes for sure. Welterweight is the UFC's most exciting weight class, and these guys are the best they have to offer.

I tried watching it once, but it reminded me too much of the catfights between the cheerleaders I saw back in high school. Just isn't my sort of thing, ya' know?

H'mm. I don't follow it or anything, but I have a prediction:

They'll both be feeling that one in the morning.

Haha... GSP used to have a gimmick where, after defeating his opponent, he'd do a standing back layout. That guy is a monster.

I had a friend in college who was absolutely huge on the UFC, so I kind of got into it through him. My favorite fighter would have to be The Pitbull, Andrei Arlovski.

And even though my favorite fighter is a heavyweight, I'd have to say the Lightweight division is my favorite. Those guys are just non-stop action, and their fights are always fun to watch.

As for GSP v Hughes, I'd like to see GSP take it. I'm not much of a Hughes fan...

Hughes is a great fighter, but GSP is better, and he proved it tonight. Submission by arm bar in the second round baby! That was the sickest BJJ sequence I've seen in a long time. He went from a backwards upside down triangle to a kimura to an arm bar to an upsie down arm bar that was so tight Hughes had to submit verbally because he couldn't tap. What a fight!

GSP is the future of UfC... if Matt Serra makes the mistake of getting better he's gonna get steamrolled.

Down boy. GSP is good, hell he's great, but he's not unbeatable. If Matt Sera comes back but doesn't improve then yeah GSP will beat him, if Matt Serra comes back and does improve then it should be a hell of a fight.

You think GSP is going to stand still for the next year? He's going to keep getting better at the same rate he's been improving all along. And he'll have more time to prepare than Serra, since Matt has to get his back in shape before he can start training hard.

My prediction is when GSP-Serra II rolls around the french-canadian is going to take it by TKO before the end of the third round.

I try to keep up with UFC but it's difficult since I'm in Colombia. I'm a pretty big Arlovsky fan, though.

And I definitely don't agree with Lidell being washed up. He's got maybe the most powerful fists in the UFC, and I can't imagine anyone being able to take him down consistenly. He just hits too damn hard.

Andrei is pretty damn good too, especially when you consider that the only people who have knocked him out are the current heavyweight champion and some Russian who's in jail for knocking over a bunch of stores.

I agree that Lidell isn't washed up. I think he fell into the trap of getting a little complacent in his training, and just got to used to being able to back guys around the cage and rain his bombs on them. That works great for him most of the time, but then he ended up against Jackson (one of the few men to beat Lidell before, and one who is certainly not afraid to stand and trade haymakers), and got clobbered.

I think a Lidell without the belt will be a better fighter, because now he'll have that fire to get back to the top of his game.

I actually meant "washed up" more for Silva. He just doesn't have the same energy he did in Pride when he was on steroids.

But I think the whole "now he wants his title back" excuse is a little flimsy in Liddel's case. I don't think he has the vitality to beat Rampage, not to mention his loss to Keith Jardine (I watched the fight and IMHO it should have been unanimous decision, not split).

While Liddell may not be "washed up", I don't see him getting his hands on the belt again unless he develops a ground game.

What?

He ridicules any and all male athletics as being girly. I've never seen a chearleader use jiu jitsu or muay thai.

What?

Think he could have been watching -really- old UFC?

Back in the Severn / Frye / Shamrock / Abbott days, there were a lot of slack-jawed idiots getting on cards as cannon fodder. The UFC has come miles and miles, but used to be fairly sloppy.

I'm wondering if maybe all he caught of a fight was a long stretch of ground game, and not a lot of the stand-and-fight. I suppose one could draw similarities between half or mounted guard and two highschool cheerleaders rolling around on the ground pulling hair.

That is of course if you ignore the finer intricacies of the ground game as each guy tries to choke and/or pound the life out of the other...

That's kind of what I was getting at. I'm not saying he'll get better just because he doesn't have the belt, I'm saying that not having the belt might light the fire under his ass that he needs to actually train and develop the skills to get back to the top.

You're right that he needs to develop a ground game, because like I mentioned, he just got to used to being able to punch guys into submission.

Now maybe he'll realize that's not going to work all the time and round out his game.

You know what? I hope that doesn't happen. One of the things I like about Lidell is that he doesn't fuck about trying to squirm this way or that way on the ground. He just goes right out there looking for a K.O. I really like fighters that are so powerful they don't have to be cautious.

Edit: Plus anyone who consistenly beats the shit out of Ortiz is A-OK with me.

I'm not a hardcore UFC fan, but just this year our Health teacher, Bobby Jones went and fought in the MMA (Multiple Martial Arts), which is something similar to UFC I'd imagine. I'm not sure how televised it was or at what level the match was on the fighting scale, but the fight lasted about 36-39 seconds and the guy he faced got the shit kicked out of him.

Guess it goes to show what a former New Yorks Giant football player who was considered the 'little guy' can do in the ring. ;)
