Brotherly Shove
05-29-06, 01:11 AM
Name: Vann Curian

Age: 45, Appears 26

Race: Soulless

Gender: Asexual/Male

Height: 5’ 10”

Weight: 175 lbs

Hair Color: Dark Brown

Eye Color: Orange

Affiliations: None

Class: Transmogrification Mage – Transmogrification is the technical term for shape-shifting, and only used by the mages of the highest caliber, or seen in ancient books near forgotten. The ability nowadays is often just spoken of as fiction, used in stories of dark mages transforming to skulk about and steal information. In truth the ability is far different. It does not transform the wielder into the animal fully, but gives them the attributes and appearance changes of the animal/entity they choose.

Occupation: Adviser to Lord Hector of Brakenn Hold
--Political Advisor and Archmage for the ‘Legion of Brakenn Hold’

Personality: Vann, in contrast with his ‘brother’ has a very hasty personality. He isn’t one to stop and think things out, even if the current situation is not one of urgency. Often times his limited patience on the battlefield can work against him. However there have been times when his “shoot first, ask questions later” way of doing things has proven useful.

Vann is a very outgoing being. He talks more than most and jokes near constantly. His personality does so clash with his ‘brothers’ that many call them a ‘perfect match’. It is just as well, since the time of their creation they have almost always been at each other’s side.

Vann, as all Soulless beings, is a ‘true neutral’. He does not see the world as a constant battle between good and bad, nor does he recognize the terms good or bad. Instead he interprets all actions, reactions, and goals as one of three things: innate nature, socially acceptable/unacceptable, and personal approval. Innate nature is the basics that come with people, human nature, things that are inherited and passed down through generations. It is what most refers to as conscious. Socially acceptable/unacceptable means just that… good and bad are based on what the person was raised to believe. In modern society it is ‘socially unacceptable’ to murder a person, but that is because it is what people, and the civilized world, what you to believe. The person doing it could have fully justified his reasons by his own upbringing; as such it is not a bad deed but something that is a conflict of upbringing. Finally is personal approval, or how people react to certain things. Some could shrug off seeing someone beaten in an alley, having grown up around it and numb to it. Others, not seeing that as common or not being able to stand the sight personally, would take the action as ‘evil’ or ‘bad’. This one is much like the previous, but it has nothing to do with society because it is personal. It also has nothing to do with innate because it does not come from the parents or from the race, but instead comes from what a person can take individually.

The Wandering Spirit. That is what most call it at least. It is the habit of all soulless; apparently all of them have it to some degree. It is the call to travel, the call for adventure. No matter what the being looks like, what their proficiencies are, or where they were spawned, the soulless race has a hard time staying put too long. Leadership positions and occupations that force them to stay for a long time in one place often are only held by very old beings that have learned to be calm and calm the restless spirit within.

Lastly is Vann’s respect and admiration of animals. He views them as ‘flawless beings’. This is because of their nature. Animals are driven by their instincts and of their instincts alone. The illusions of good and evil do not alter their behaviors nor their will to survive.

Appearance: Vann’s Hair is of medium length and hangs evenly just below his ears when wet. However, when his hair is dry it flares out wildly in all directions as if he had no idea that the comb existed. His hair is a dark brown color that can appear almost blonde in the light.

Vann’s skin is a bronzed, almost red tint due to the location of his upbringing. Though he is shorter than his ‘brother’ he is a bit thicker, having a larger, more toned upper body, almost hulky. Vann also has many tribal tattoos adorning nearly his entire body. Tribal patterns depicting birds, fish, bears and even snakes stretch from the tips of his fingers to the base of his neck. These patterns also twirl and crawl down the font and back of his torso.

Vann’s eyes are a vibrant orange, much like the setting sun. Because of this, many of the eldest on the island of Sid referred to him as ‘The Child of the Day’s End’. His eyes are similar to his ‘brothers’ in that they are slightly inset as well. Vann’s face is a bit more rounded than most, and is always cleanly shaven.

Clothing: Vann’s attire is very simple. He wears a pairs of loose fitting, off-white cotton pants. Due to much wear and tear these once long pants now only dangle just below his knees and are very worn and tattered at the ends. Securing these simple pants is a bright red, silk sash that is tied to dangle at his right side.

Armor: None

Weapons: None

Skills/Abilities:
novice – apprentice – average – experienced – advanced – expert – legend

Capoeira – Vann studied a form of self-defense known as Capoeira, or ‘The Dance-Fight’. It was used originally by the natives of Sid, the first denizens of the island, as an initiation for citizens of all sorts to prove themselves. It was kept by the new government of Sid, trained through the ranks, and only a few take to it yearly. It is truly a unique style of fighting that is not found many other places. This is Vann’s only means of defense when not using his magic.
average

Acrobatics – Thanks to his studies in Capoeira, Vann is naturally more flexible and agile than he would be otherwise. Maneuvering through complex terrain, hopping from roof top to roof top, avoiding an onslaught of falling arrows, these are all very possible tasks for Vann. ((Overemphasized of course… dexterity is twice what an elf may possess)) apprentice

Soulless Ability - Vann’s shape-shifting abilities are related to his soulless qualities. There is a void within him which often seeks to be filled. He fills that void with his magic, with the spirits of the animals that he seeks. Vann seeks the animals, often the strongest and most notorious of their race. Upon finding him he slays them, not out of anger or greed, but out of the need to understand and be one with them. When the animal is killed its spirit is absorbed by the young mage, both honored and protected. The resulting product is a change physically and depending on the strength of the beast in life possibly mental too. When this transformation occurs the abilities, skills, magic, and whatever else the soul may have known will be at the soulless mage’s disposal.

This unique ability has some limits though. Once the soul is drawn it can be released at any time. However, if not released, the spirit’s gifts will only last an hour at a time. Vann CANNOT draw another spirit once one has left, whether released or expired, for at least one hour. In that time he must depend solely on his hand-to-hand skills. In addition, when a soul is drawn from the weapon it causes pain, because it transforms the user. As such, the pain that is induced courses through the entire body while Vann transforms, it lasts only seconds but feels like lightening is pulsing through his veins.

Another off-shoot of the souls is that the more the soul is drawn the more it affects Vann while he is in normal form. Over time attributes could, but may not always, be inadvertently learned from manipulating a soul for so long. And it is also possible for the attitude or alignment and personal goals to leak into the normal form of Vann as well. However rare this may be, the stronger the soul the stronger influence the spirit within it will have on the man, both in and out of form.

Vann collects trinkets of the animals that he kills as a reminder of those that sacrificed their lives so he could gain their strength. They in no way are the source of his power; they are simply a symbol of respect.

Personal History:
--The Beginning—

The world of Althanas is a rare and often chilling place. Soulless beings are just an addition to the world.

Vann is one of the soulless beings of the southern Corone coast. He is one of two, spawned with another soulless in an unprecedented event. The ‘parent’ soulless being that spawned the two died as soon as the pods dropped from it, the strain of creating the two soulless and the drain that it took to form them in the end killed it. Vann Curian’s ‘brother’ or ‘twin’s’ name is Nemian Troy.

The two, though not having to be with each other or even needing to be familiar with each other, became instant friends. One took to the blades, Nemian, while the other took to a more magical area of life, Vann. Both were drafted into the island nation of Sid’s military forces. It wasn’t long before Vann became fascinated with the animals of the islands, and the magi’s.

Years went by like seconds for Vann. The Oracle of Sid made a prophesy though, a prophesy that shook not only the people of Sid and their allies but also the twins. What it meant none yet know, but Vann to this day cannot remove the Prophet’s words from his mind. The prophet also gave the two their paths, sending each on the specific classes that they currently hold.

‘One will tip the scale of Althanas. In the end it will be a war.’

Corone : 25 to 30 ((Ability Locked))
Corone was an important step in the young mage’s quest for knowledge. His brother Nemian was there by his side all the way. This was the place Vann would find the great bear of Corone known as ‘ Beleron ’. It was here he would gain the spirit of the bear. When tracking this beast, Vann had to venture alone, he is unaware of what his brother did while he hunted.

Salvar : 30 to 45 ((Ability Locked))
In the land of Salvar, Vann would gain his final ability. He would have to look to the skies for his last power, the spirit of the eagle. After gaining his last power, Vann dedicated his time to his brother, aiding him wherever need be. His brother had gained new powers as well. Nemian now wielded the broadsword for Lord Hector of Brakenn Hold, a growing port along western Salvar. The city is nearly unknown to the monarchy, as between Brakenn Hold and Knife’s Edge is mostly ill-made roads and vicious native tribes.

While under the employ of Lord Hector Vann and his brother quickly raised the ranks. Missions brought them against an anarchical gang within the city, Gerund’s Hand. Fighting this gang would further increase Vann’s brother’s power. Only a few years later, the two would rise to be Advisors for the Lord, the right and left hand men and closest too him.

It would be in Salvar that the beginning of the Oracle’s prophesies would come to bear.

It would be in Brakenn Hold when the two would begin their rise.

((The abilities marked as locked will be unlocked after a series of quests pertaining to the History, which will also be expanded upon.))
