View Full Version : Traitor in the Ranks

Twilight had fallen over the town, its dim feathers of light grasping the houses and throwing the citizen's shadows long and far. Vania stood up against the back wall, the crumbling terrace of some deserted building crept ahead of him. He had a perfect view of the alley-way just beneath him and he hovered there like a vulture. This "traitor", Jillian, had to be eradicated immediately, or so the "Scourge" said. He liked the name, and had only recently joined their ranks in hopes of finding some kind of magical articles. He was promised a fortune by the recruiter, but he knew very well none of the phony drab he bellowed could possibly be true.

Vania was also not quite the fond of killing people, either - he really never had the heart to do so. But, if what the Scourge told him was true, then their lives would be at stake if this crazed lady were to actually deliver. As the lights became paler and paler about him, he drew his cascading cape of crimson-dyed ostrich feathers to him and took a few careful steps forward. The terrace's foundation seemed quite weak, and already few clumps of the marble material had loosened themselves from the decayed railing and dove towards the alley-way below him. His eyes continued to scour, like fiery saffron marbles flicking continuously from side to side.

He set a weary hand upon the frail, dusted railing and knew it had to have once been an exquisitely decorated barrier. His eyes scrutinized it carefully - he was rather interested in old things, especially those wizened items that were valuable in the past. The faint outline of some feathered serpent could be made out, as though slumbering in the damaged barrier as a mere trace of its old self. Vania became so absorbed in the platform that he failed to notice the shadowed visage rising at the entrance of the alley-way.

He rose slowly and sunk back, his eyes piercing in the direction of the figure he had been waiting for. The thought of it all was rather exhilarating to Vania. He had never broken the law, or what he thought was the law, at least. His heart fluttered like a butterfly straining against a cage, though as the figure grew near he sensed companionship - clearly, it wasn't the woman he would soon be intercepting, but the friend the Scourge promised would come to his aid. Maybe he wouldn't actually have to do any dirty work in the first place? Secretly, he hoped that they would be a fierce killing machine or some kind of sadistic murderer that could do all of those brutish things to the runaway woman in his place.

This is the beginning, Vania thought, as they drew closer, the shadows embrace slowly falling from their advancing person, like a sheet or a curtain drawn back from some antique in a dusty attic.

OOC: I guess anyone can join if they want. I think the limit is 2-4 people. I warn you, I'll only be able to update so often, so things might not be very fast paced.
