I know, I should probably have figured this out by now, but...

what the heck is bunnying? I can't find a definition anywhere online, so now I have to embarrass myself and ask in the open.

Bunnying is using someone else's character. It's bad when it's without their permission. It's assumed that if you're using an alt and take control of it from a different account, it's kosher.
