Official Title: Jaren Prestim, Hunter of Koals

General Information:
Approximately six feet in height, and about 190 pounds. Jaren’s eyes are colored hazel. Jaren’s age is unknown due to his trademark grin and bald head, but for the purposes of characterization, it will be assumed that Jaren is in his early twenties.

Everything You Need to Know:
Jaren was born a prince of Halream, to King Hector and Queen Isabelle. He is the 3rd of four children: Prince Modred the Wise, the eldest; Princess Elyse the Invoker of Maelfans; Jaren, the Hunter of Koals, and Mychael, the Bastard Child (now known as Myke, the Corrupt Sorcerer).

Only the first born daughter and son were considered heir to the throne, and so Modred and Elyse were the ones that King Hector and Queen Isabelle raised with care and affection. Since Hector and Isabelle were highly involved in magical affairs, they were aware of the risks they brought upon Modred and Elyse when they introduced the young children to the Phage magic. What the king and queen didn’t anticipate, however, was that Myke, whom they deemed as “the mistake,” would slip into the Phage chambers undetected each day, and study the Phage magic on his own. Since he was not accepted as a part of the family, Myke had nothing else to keep him going but the Phage magic. He devoted himself to learning the difficult but powerful magic, and over the years, his power grew, until it came to the point where his power could rival even that of his father’s.

Phage the Sorcerer/Phage Magic:
Many years before Jaren’s time, there was a powerful but good sorcerer, Phage. He brought order to the chaos in Halream, and ruled the land for many years. When evil threatened the land once again at the end of Phage’s life, he bid his apprentices to turn his existence into a magic that would repel evil, and ensure that good would always triumph over evil.

Although it is of no particular element, Phage magic is widely known throughout the land of Halream as one of the most powerful magicks. Most wizards are never able to completely understand the power of Phage, and it is entrusted only to a select few. Those that do wield the power of Phage, do so through their pure souls, unleashing the power with words. These sorcerers can wield this power because of their belief that goodness with endure. Phage magic can only be summoned to harm those of evil intent, or to aid those of pure intent. The two exceptions to Phage’s limitations are Jaren and Myke (to be explained later in the profile).

As Jaren was growing up, he was not favored by his parents, but he was still considered part of the family because he would become heir if anything happened to Modred. He was trained specifically in the use of scimitars. He did not know anything about the Phage chambers as he was growing up, but something bothered him as he continued to train. He could sense Myke’s bitter hatred for his parents, and yet, Jaren did nothing. He was too young to comprehend Myke’s internal struggles. In fact, Jaren was the only one in the castle who treated Myke well, as opposed to a piece of dirt.

While Modred’s and Elyse’s proficiency in Phage magic grew, Myke’s secret studies allowed him to go even farther with the magic than anyone could comprehend. While any known Phage sorcerer could only use the magic ascertained to the limitations set, Myke’s studies allowed him to manipulate the energy intended for good and apply it however he chose. Without the limitations, Myke essentially became the most powerful sorcerer in Halream at the age of twelve, although nobody was aware of the situation.

Myke used the gap in between his realization of his power and everyone else realizing it to rally all of the troops he could find. He united all of the trolls, ogres, giants, and other creatures banished by Phage many years earlier. The now evil tween promised the soldiers land in the kingdom if they helped him take it over after he disposed of his family. With his plan fimly solidified by the age of thirteen, Myke first went to Jaren to inform him of his plans. When he learned of the sinister things that Myke planned to do to the family, Jaren was appalled, but he didn’t say anything, because he didn’t think Myke was serious.

Myke went into Modred’s room first, where the young man was resting after a particularly extensive Phage lesson. Hector and Isabelle both sensed the incredibly powerful magic as soon as it was unleashed. Their worst fears had come to fruition. They quickly rushed into Elyse’s room and after giving her instructions, transported her into another dimension where the intruder would not be able to find her, until it was time for her to return. Once they ensured that their daughter was safe, they rushed into Jaren’s room, who was now the heir to the throne. Hector quickly grabbed Jaren’s steel scimitar from its perch, blade still inside the hilt. He thrust it into Jaren’s hands, motioning for the boy to prepare himself for a journey. The day had come at last, and Hector and Isabelle had been preparing their energies in case someone would dare to infiltrate their domain. Isabelle handed Jaren his traveling belt outfitted with food, water, and a tiny pocket knife intended for cutting up meat and the such. Confused, Jaren looked up into his parents’ worried faces, expecting them to burst out laughing and tell him that they were joking. But they never did. In fact, Isabelle looked like she was about to cry. She and Hector knew for a fact that Modred had been murdered, and that the infiltrator was coming their way, even if they weren’t aware that it was their own son, Myke.

“Not like this…” Isabelle sobbed.

“Like what…?” Jaren inquired. He still didn’t understand Myke’s intentions. Hector and Isabelle grasped hands, and Jaren’s scimitar began to glow. He pulled it out of its sheath, and inspected it carefully, amazed at the power he felt in his hands. As quickly as it had appeared, however, the power dissipated, and the glow faded.

“What in the world was that?” Jaren marveled. “What’s going on?”

“We don’t have a lot of time,” Hector began, “but you must know one thing. Hunt the Koals. They are the key to Phage’s power. Once you destroy all of the Koals, then Elyse will return to Halream and take her rightful spot as the Queen of Halream, with you at her side.”

“How can I find these Koals?” Jaren wondered.

“Naga, your scimitar, will start to hum and glow as it just did when it senses the presence of a Koal.” He heard steps approaching rapidly, and so the king ran to the door, bolting it swiftly. Jaren’s stare went down to the now dormant blade. Its awesome power was his to wield now, and he had to do so with caution. He lifted his head, and asked:

“How many Koals are there?”

At this question, the king grimaced. “That’s the thing, kid. We don’t know. What we do know, however, is that Phage inserted the Koals into a different dimension to protect his power from those that would seek to break it, and inserted the only key to that dimension into his magic, which can only be used for the forces of good. He grimaced again. Until now, that is.”

The door rattled, showing evidence that someone was forcibly banging on the door, attempting to get in. “We are going to send you to that dimension with the last of our energy. It is imperative that you fulfill your task and bring peace once again to our land.”

Just then, Myke broke down the door, and stepped inside with a sinister grin curling on his lips. Isabelle broke down sobbing, muttering words such as “How could you,” and “Why did you do that?” King Hector, however, was in a rage.

“How can you betray your kingdom and more importantly, the sacred magic of Phage?” he roared.

“Easy. Just be ignored for the entirety of your life, and you won’t feel any remorse.” He grinned wider. “Say your prayers.” As he raised his hands to deal the finishing blow, he added, “I’m your ‘mistake,’ am I? Yeah right!” He laughed. “Your only ‘mistake’ was neglecting me!”

“NO!!!” Jaren yelled. In a flash of bright light, everything but Jaren disappeared from view as the boy vanished into nothingness. He would appear several years later in the land of Althanas, his figure completely changed (identical to the description given) and having no knowledge of his homeland other than the one statement stuck in his memory:

“Hunt the Koals.”

Brief Inventory:

~Naga, the Steel Scimitar: Infused with Phage’s magic, Naga is Jaren’s exception to the magic’s limitations. Although he has just received the potential, Jaren must first unlock the power before being able to use it. For now, the scimitar is just a plain old steel blade. No abilities have been activated at the moment.

~Belt, with pouches attached, containing food and water, as well as a pocket knife. There is also a hilt connected to the belt in which Naga rests.
