View Full Version : The Creation of a Sword
A Nony Mouse

Travis walked into the dimly lit Synthesis Shop and headed toward the counter at the back of the room. Strange mists swirled in the air and bizarre objects from all over the world stared at him from the shelves. Unsure whether or not anyone was even in the odd little shop, he called to the back, "Hello?"

“Oh, I’m coming!”
The call echoed out from the dark purple curtain behind the counter, separating the visible area of Lasair’s shop from the back where she did her synthesizing and her customers were not allowed to go. After all, she couldn’t have them figuring out exactly how her magic worked, and then her shop would become rather pointless, no?
Her voice was followed by a few bangs and some thuds and finally Lasair practically fell out of the curtain stumbling and catching herself on the counter. Shaking her head and sending long strands of her blood red hair flying all around her face, the small Fae turned to her new customer.
“How can I help you?”

The fairy who emerged from the back room was beautiful. Clumsy, but breathtaking. Travis forgot for a moment why he was there. Shaking his head, he fumbled with a small piece of parchment at his belt. "I'd like to get an enchanted sword made," he said after clearing his throat. "I drew up a concept sketch and I can explain what I'm looking for," he pushed the paper across the counter to the woman and stepped back.
"Basically," he continued while she looked at his sketch, "I want to be able to store the sword elsewhere, summon it to my hand when I need it, and then have it return to where it was when I am done." The fairy didn't seem to be paying him attention, so he wrapped up his description, "I guess I need to know what you'll need for the sword and for the enchantment..."

Lasair looked at the strange drawing that the man provided for her and listened to his explanation at the same time, the two forms of sensory information serving only one purpose for the Fea; confusion. The drawing in and of itself could be rather confusing to anyone except perhaps the person that made it and Lasair understood things better when she heard people tell them to her. Not from looking at a random piece of paper, at least not one like this. It wasn’t a tome or anything, just a drawing.
“Umm...” Giving her now slightly muffled brain a bit of a shake, the Fae slid the paper back across the counter to the young human. “Well, it sounds plausible I suppose, but I don’t really understand where your sword is going. You want it to go poof! And then poof back at your command, but where are you poofing it to? It has to go somewhere after all...”
All of a sudden, her entire face seemed to lighten up at her golden eyes widened and an extremely large smile pulled at the corner of her lips.
“Oh! I’m got an idea. Why not Synth a small crystal on a leather string that hangs off of your wrist, whichever is your dominant hand,” Lasair began to explain to him, “and though the crystal may only be an inch big here, within it has enough space to hide your sword. And upon command the crystal can absorb the sword and upon another command spit it back out into your hand. Sound good?”

As Travis saw confusion written over the thin fairy's face, he began to worry. Was this shop not all that it boasted? His spirits sank as she shook her head to clear her thoughts.
When she told him her idea, however, his eyes lit up. That was exactly the effect he wanted! "Normally I wear bracers," he told the shopkeep, "Would they interfere with this magic? Also, could you help me make the sword too?" He wasn't sure if such a feat was beyond the synthesis shop owner's capabilities, but it couldn't hurt to ask.
"I can describe the materials I'd like the sword made from, if that would help you with the ingredients I'll need..." he trailed off as he waited for the beautiful woman's response.

“I don’t need you to describe the materials for the sword. Honestly, the sword will be the easy part of this synthesis; after all it’s the enchanting part that’s going to be tricky.” She said with a smile. “If you want a regular short sword, its six pounds of whatever raw metal you want it made from, long sword will be ten pounds, and a bastard sword will be around 8 pounds and well... if you want something else just uhh... use your head? Also, I’ll need about a foot of leather for the handle and a separate piece of leather string for the enchanted pendant.”
When he came back she was going to need him to tell her exactly what kind of sword he wanted and even give her some dimensions on it so she could make it to his exact specifications. For now though, that process was a long ways off and she still needed to get to work on the ingredients for the enchantment he wanted. She was just about to yell into the backroom for one of her plushie’s to grab her a tome, when she realized she didn’t need one.
“This should actually be a rather quick and easy hunt since this follows the principals that I created my Never-Ending Rucksack with. So, besides the ingredients you’ll need for your sword the enchantment ingredients will be as follows: One crystallized vortex or black hole, one small, clear and unblemished crystal, approximately twelve inches of leather string and a feather.” She smiled at him, “Simple, no?”

Travis wondered how the woman would know the ingredients off the top of her head, but thought better of asking. From her descriptions, it seemed like she hadn't even looked at his drawing. Sighing, Travis decided he needed to ask about the sword's ingredients again.
"Well," he began, "it's a special kind of sword that I want, you see. It's a dual-bladed sword that shares a common hilt... Also, I want to blades made out of bone and parts of it reinforced with metal." He pictured the weapon in his mind and smiled before continuing. "Also, do you have an enchantment that can make the edge of the blade extraordinarily sharp?"
He wondered if such requests were going to turn his easy hunt in something far beyond his capabilities...
I would like the blades made from Faoi bone, if I could. This request precedes my quest "Hunting and Gathering" with Tsukiko. Thanks!

“Oh...” It appeared the human had more for her than she initially thought which wasn’t a bad thing! She just wished he would have told her it all at once, it would make her life so much easier.
“Godhand!” She called out at apparently no one, for that certainly was not the name of the human before her. “Tome six and nine please!”
Her call was met with silence, silence that was then followed by two loud thuds. Seconds later, the curtain ruffled and shifted a bit, but unless the human was looking down he was not going to be able to see the small plushie that came out, carrying the two tomes in his hands. The tomes were easily four times his size, though he appeared to not have any issue with their weight.
With a might jump, the Godhand plushie made it to the top of the counter and then sat down the books.
“Thanks, Godhand.”
He gave her a grunt as response, so she picked him up and hugged him, squeezing the poor little guy until he was begging her to put him down. Giggling, she set him down and then went to work on the rest of the ingredients that the human was going to need. Her fingers expertly opened booth of the tomes and began leafing through the pages, glancing at drawings and descriptions of various different things in Dheathain that could do wonderful things when thrown into a synthesis. Even seaweed, though she didn’t need that in this instance.
Reaching down under the counter, the Fae grabbed a piece of parchment and a quill and quickly began writing down a list of things the human was going to need. Sometimes she went back and crossed something out, replacing it with a better suited item that would not react as violently as the first.
“All done!”
She put down the quill and handed the piece of parchment to the human, which had the complete listing for everything he was going to need.
The pendant:
• One clear, unblemished crystal
• One crystallized vortex or black hole
• A twelve inch piece of leather string
• One feather
The Sword:
• Raw Damascus (four pounds)
• Bone (preferably the bone from a wyrm or wyrven)
• Three teeth from either a Mearog or a Cailpis
• Three claws from a Runda
• One feather
• Purified water
• One black crystal
• Two diamonds
• One craighivar crystal
• Two tri-horned beetles

Travis saw a small doll leap onto the counter and he shook his head in case he was seeing things. The things carried two huge books, but seemed to be able to move with relative ease under their weight. As the things walked off, the fairy scribbled down the ingredients that he would need.
When she finished, Travis scanned the list and sighed. "Would you be able to tell me where to find any of these things? I'm really not familiar with the region."

Lasair smiled at him as he tentatively asked for some help in the locations of these items as if even she might not know where they were. Which of course she did since she lived here and researched here and knew so much more about Dheathain than the average person did, even those much older than her.
“I can tell you the different areas they’re in.” Lasair said to him, “Tri-Horned beetles are beetles that live in the grasslands, Cailpis are a form of Wyrven that can be found there too. Most crystals can be found in the cave behind the waterfall in the Cearnaigh Criostal, which is the shopping district you’re currently in. Other crystals like the Craighivar one and the crystallized vortex or black hole will be harder to find. The craighivar crystal can be found in the Neamh Mountains and the black hole and vortex crystals can usually be found in any of the numerous ruins around the region. They’re usually a few inches below the soil, so a little digging should uncover them. Purified water is just water good enough to drink and for the feather, I suppose any would do as long as it’s not a special feather. Oh, and the Runda lives in the grasslands too, he tends to stay underground though making little burrows for himself. It’ll be rare for you to find one hanging out above ground.”
She was pretty sure that covered most of the ingredients she could help him with. “Anything else?”

He was surprised that she knew exactly where to find everything that she had written on his list. Perhaps he had underestimated the fae in his initial decision about her. Appearance was not always a window into the personality or intellect of a person; Travis would have to remember that in the future.
"Thank you very much," he said graciously. "I appreciate your expertise; that's all I need for today. I suppose I shall return if I ever find all of these things." With a polite bow to the woman, he turned about and left the shop for whatever adventures awaited him in Dheathain.

Lasair waved to the young human as she watched him leave her shop. She hoped he would return with all of the ingredients, there were so many after all that came in to get a list and then never returned. Whether or not they couldn’t find it all, or something worse had happened to them she didn’t know. She just hoped that nothing bad would befall him. He was such a nice human.
