View Full Version : Achsariel Arcanum

Achsariel
06-09-06, 03:52 AM
Name: Achsariel Orcanus Arcanum
Age: 28 celestial cycles (an amazingly long time in conventional years)
Race: Latent Angelic
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: One of blue and one of silver
Height: 7'9"
Weight: 240 lbs
Occupation: Carries things from place to place for a price. A transporter.

Personality:
Whimsical. Devil may care. Generally, Achsariel does what wants regardless of what others think. He is extremely curious, and has an insatiable thirst for knowledge, compounded with inquenchable wanderlust. He sees life as a giant party, and sometimes refers to himself as "The Lord of The Carnival."

Appearance:
Achsariel appears to be a young man of around 7' 9" in height, so he's pretty tall compared to most people. His build is lean and narrow, giving him a somewhat frail appearence, though closer examination reveals a substantial amount of muscle working beneath his skin. His hair is long and dark obsidian black, reaching down to a few inches past his waist, and having a slight curl. His face has well-defined, angular features with eyes that are deeply-set into the face. The eyes themselves are of two different colors. The right eye is a bright, icey blue. The left eye has a swirling silver iris which blends into the white, and a white pupil that seems to glow slightly. He's got a couple little lip piercings on his lower lip, but he usually only puts lip-rings in for special occasions. He has a thing for extravegant and elaborate clothing made of exotic materials with complex embroidery, and sports a number of outfits for a number of occasions. Even his combat-wear, though practical, has a touch of unusual style to it.

History:
A number of years ago, far from the eyes of anything intelligent enough to express more than fear at the event, something crashed into a wide, open, far-off plain of the Fallien desert. The impact sent dust flying thousands of feet into the air, and effectively caused a tidal wave of sand to spread across the area. When all the commotion had stopped, and the dust settled, there was nothing else. Only silence and a large crater of sand. three weeks passed, and there was nothing. Another two months passed, and there was still nothing. Then, finally, something crawled out of that crater. It was a man. Or atleast, it was in man-shape. There were a few peculiarities, the most obvious of which being the wings, which seemed to protrude from his back in a bizarely beautiful fashion. They were great, powerful looking wings. Had they been stretched out, they may have spanned thirty or forty feet. But one might observe that these wings were peculiar even among wings that protrude from the back of a man, which is a rarity in its own right. They were the most beautiful glowing white color. Or were they black? Red perhaps? It was very hard to tell. The wings themselves kept flickering in and out of reality, as though they weren't quite used to existing yet. Moments passed, and the wings phased out. Perhaps they would try again later. The man stood, weakly at first. He almost stumbled. He got it eventually. He stood, naked in that desert, and looked up at his new sky. When he was sure that he could move properly, he began to wander. He simply walked, as far as he could. The desert is not a hospitable place to a naked man, and after trudging a number of miles, he collapsed, dehydrated and exhausted.

He awoke some days later. How many, he did not know, but he was clothed and he was in a tent. His eyes focused and he looked around. He stood and walked out of the tent. It was night and there was a fire. Sitting around the fire, humming an old tune was an old man of the desert. This man had come across Achsariel in his own wandering of the desert, and had rescued him. Over the coming years, this man would become Achsariel's mentor, teacher, and friend. It was he who taught him the arts of the Rune Warden, and thew ways of combat. Their stories and adventures could fill long volumes, but those are stories for another time, to be told another day. What you need to know is that between then and now, the two seperated and were never to see each other again. Achsariel ventured out into the world alone, seeking new experiences and new sensation. He sought new knowledge and new interests. He wanted to see all that this world had. You see, there is so much more to Achsariel's story. His story goes back into time far beyond that of this world or most others. He is a being who wanders from world to world. With every new world he visits, he forgets everything for a time. Eventually, all of his memories of all of his past lives come back to him. A long incubation period is required, but exactly how long is uncertain. However, Achsariel has been wandering this world for nearly a century now, and the period has not yet come. All that may be known is that every world he has visited, he has left profoundly changed. Whether they were changed for the better or the worse, that cannot be known. But there will come a time when Achsariel will awaken, and the changes will begin. As a result of his travels, he has quite a number of casual aquaintances across the continent. He has, interestingly, a boundless love of music, and almost always carries a guitar with him. In light of this, it is unsurprising that he whistles everywhere he goes.

Skills:
Flight - Achsariel has large, fully-functional wings which have a span of around 30 or 40 feet when fully spread. However, due to complex space-time properties of the race which I don't have room or time to explain, the wings tend to exist out of phase with the rest of the physical universe. Because of this, they only really "exist" when Achsariel choses them to. However, maintaining their sustained existence is tiring, and they can only be kept in phase for perhaps an hour or so at a time. They are sometimes white, sometimes black, and sometimes red.

Regeneration - In times of severe trauma (I.E. imminent death) Achsariel's cells cease being one organism and become independent organisms, capable of surviving autonomously for long periods of time. In the event of the death of Achsariel, his remaining living cells will begin coming togeather to form a colony organism, and eventually, will enter a pupic state from which the fully-grown Achsariel will again emerge. However, this process may take a number of years, possibly even a decade or more, depending on the how badly damaged his body is, and the reborn Achsariel will have no memories of his past life until an extremely long incubation period has passed. Consequently, he can, over time, regenerate lost limbs. The regrowing of, say, a finger may take as short as a few weeks, where as a hand would take three or four months. An entire arm or leg would take a year or more.

Silver-sight - Not really an ability, more of a unique trait. With his silver right eye, Achsariel can see roughly 1.75 times farther than normal if he concentrates. It is possible that the eye has properties and abilities that are not yet discovered or known.

Runes - Essentially, a Rune Warden specializes in etching enchanted runes upon things to give them certain properties. The runes have wide-ranging effects, from making things lighter or heavier, to making them repellant to water, to making them inversely proportional in temperature to their surroundings. Advanced Rune Wardens may even be able to give things elemental and magical properties. However, the runes must be etched with exact precision, and the inks used in the process must be made of specific ingredients mixed to exact proportions. Doing either of these incorrectly can frequently yield disasterous results, or no resuslts at all, depending. As such, etching a rune takes time and concentration, and because the lines must be drawn without any breaks or stops in the ink, if he lifts his pen before the rune is entirely complete, it will be useless and he will have to start over from scratch. He's also likely to make mistakes if there are too many distractions while he does them, which will either make them worthless or yield undesired effects. How effective a rune is depends on the skill of the Rune Warden who makes them. The effects of runes are temporary, with the duration depending on the rune. When a rune wears off, it simply fades away. Each time an object is etched with a rune, the effect of the rune is increased by a factor of one. This means that an object etched with a rune to make it heaver will be twice as much heavier than normal with two runes than with one, and three times as much heavier than normal with three runes than with one. Also, the larger a rune is etched on an object, the greater it's effect. At this time, Achsariel knows runes which have the following effects:

Algiz - Make an object emit light - Takes five minutes. Achsariel has enough ingredients right now to make five of these runes. Effect wears off after an hour. Useful in dark places, obviously.
Sowulu - Make an object emit heat - Takes ten minutes. Achsariel has enough ingredients right now to make six of these runes. Effect wears off after three hours. Good for use on blankies.
Achsariel is working on several other runes, but has not yet mastered them.

The Dance of Five Gales - This is Achsariel's general fighting style. It is a largely defensive style of combat based around re-directing the attacks and movement of the enemy to throw them off-gaurd and strike in the interm. This is compounded with a philosophy of always acting in ways that are unpredictable and difficult to anticipate. Because it is more of a combat philosophy than a style, it is easily adaptable to other forms of combat. The philosophy can be implemented for various styles of weaponry, as well as in individual battles or even full-scale wars. One must simply learn to apply the same philosophy on a larger scale. Aside from this, Achsariel developed this style himself just recently, so it's not quite perfected. It's still very much in the developmental stages, and not entirely effective as a fighting style yet, due to the fact that Achsariel spent so much time perfecting the philosophy, and so little on the actual execution, not to mention the time spent on coming up with a really cool name for it. He's working on that execution thing though. Right now he's about as proficient as a low-ranking foot soldier. He's good enough to deal with random thugs and the average Joe well enough, but he'd struggle with anyone who has real experience.

Aerial Assault - Considering that he has the ability of flight, Achsariel may often use this to his advantage in battle. He can dive, swoop, sweep, barrel-roll, ect. for a variety of airborne attacks. Though he can battle fairly well against other airborne targets, all he can really do against a ground target is swoop at it. However, swooping at an enemy with a spear from hundreds of feet up and actually hitting him is a considerable feat, requiring ample skill in execution, not to mention precise timing and movement. The slightest mis-tipping of the wings can result in a bone-crunching crash into the ground, rendering Achsariel injured, vulnerable, and humiliated, so using aerial assualt techniques in ground-based conflicts is somewhat of a dangerous gamble. Chances are, if a target moves away three seconds (or less) before Achsariel reaches it, he will not have time to correct and will miss.

Equipment:
Longinus - Trade-mark spear of Achsariel, which he forged himself to his own exacting specifications. It is about eight feet long, with the steel blade taking up about one and a half feet of that. There is a gaurd at the base of the blade designed to assist in parrying. The shaft, made of some unknown wood with a steel coating over it, has various "slots" in it where small cylinders with runes etched on them may be inserted. This allows him to make the spear take on various traits depending on his needs. There are three slots right now, but it is obvious from the design that more are intended to be added in the future.

Lilaurenthys - Achsariel's guitar, a twelve-stringed masterpiece of acoustic craftsmanship capable of immersing it's listeners in total sonic nirvana. It has the impressive ability of being able to accurately and vividly portray the emotion of it's player, so it is said that in order to properly play it, one must have a passionate soul. It is, infact, an enchanted instrument often whispered about by traveling bards who search for it. Achsariel discovered it on one of his many exploits. Though he recognizes that it is enchanted, he does not know of it's infamy, nor of any of it's enchanted properties. The extent of it's properties are unknown.

Atlas - Achsariel happens to be a skilled cartographer, and makes maps of almost everywhere he goes. Since he wanders across the land far and wide, he has amassed a rather impressive collection of maps. However, the atlas is still largely incomplete, with large areas of the continent missing. Achsariel intends to someday make a map of the whole world, in hopes that it will help unite the people of the world. The Atlas is drawn in a thick leatherbound tome with a large steel clasp on the front. Aside from maps, it also contains several notes, travel-guides, and sketches of note-worthy flaura and fauna.

Rune Kit - This is a small satchel Achsariel carries around which contains the materials necessary for etching his runes. This includes a number of unusual objects. There are a number of pens with different types of nibs, and several bottles of ink made from the specific ingredients required for runework. In several seperate pockets and drawstring bags Achsariel keeps the materials required to make these inks, but they're super-secret and some of them are kinda gross, so I won't tell you about them. There is also a tiny itty-bitty book in which Achsariel has written some notes about specific runes, as well as the successes and failures he's encountered through a number of experiments with runework.

Rather Stylish Wardrobe - Achsariel has an extremely large collection of stylish clothing which he has amassed over the years. It includes clothing ranging from the bizarre to the exotic, and covers the full spectrum of colors and occasions. Some of the pieces featured in this wardrobe are rare and valuable works of tailoring, while others are custom-tailored for Achsariel. There are a number of articles which Achsariel designed and made himself. The collection, aside from the admirable number of outfits, also contains a multitude of accessories and fine hats. Obviously, this collection is far, far too large for Achsariel to carry around with him, as he may only carry perhaps three or four outfits with him in his travels, not including the one he wears. Because of this, he keeps his collection spread out through a multitude of privately rented storehouses across the continent, allowing him to switch out his clothing more conveniently.

Hide of Yudhishthira - Achsariel posesses an extremely valuable set of armour made from the hide of a rather infamous dragon named Yughishthira. Yughishthira was an extremely old and extremely powerful dragon who resided on an island which was part of a chain several hundred miles off the shore of the mainland. He was known for terrorizing the local inhabitants of the islands in the area, and hero after hero, champion after champion would attempt to face him, all meeting a rather humiliating and burninating demise. Yudhishthira was so infamous, infact, that the news of his demise is highly questioned. A number of people have claimed to be the one who slew him, none of whom have been able to prove it. Most people regard the story as a bunch of hog-wash thought up by would-be heros attempting to make a name for themselves. Yudhishthira was indeed slain though. How and when Achsariel aquired this valuable armour is unknown to everyone save him. When he does tell people about the armour, they usually doubt him. If they do believe him, they invariably ask if it was he who slew Yudhishthira. In this case, Achsariel merely smiles knowingly. It should be noted though that it is extremely unlikely that Achsariel slew Yudhishthira. Though far from the most powerful of dragons, Yudhishthira was extremely formidable, and more than a match for Achsariel.
The armour itself consists of a breastplate, shoulder gaurds, and a set of gauntlets. They are an extremely dark red in color, and have a number of elaborate boarders and designs stitched into the hide. Though the gauntlets and shoulder guards have been treated such that they are extremely firm and hard, the breastplate is actually extremely pliable. The reason for this is that Achsariel's set of armour was made from the thinner portion of Yudhishthira's hide, and is therefor nowhere near as hard and impenitrable as most dragon's hide ought to be, though it is still amazingly strong and durable compared to armour of this thickness and weight made of any other material. It is still penetrable with enough force, though it is very resistant to slashing-type strikes, and essentially is consistant with the strength of steel. This often contributes to people not believing that the armour is in fact made from the hide of the legendary Yudhishthira, which should be much, much stronger than any steel.
The armour has special resistance to heat, making it great protection from weaker fire-based attacks, though more intense flames can overpower this. One of the unique properties of dragon's hide is that, when properly maintained, it will actually continue to be somewhat alive for years after it has been seperated from the dragon, and as such, it will repair itself over time, albeit rather slowly. Much like Longinus, the set of armour has places from which Achsariel may hang charms with runes etched on them, giving the armour special properties. Despite being much, much lighter than other sets of armour made of less ideal materials, Achsariel still finds the armour cumbersome, and only wears it if he knows he will be facing an opponent who will make it necessary. (Please note that, while rather old, Yudhishthira was not a very smart dragon. He came from a breed of lesser dragons, and lacked intellectual capacity. Though ferocious, he was also little more than an animal, barely capable of speech.)

Familiars:
Lemon - A small kitten Achsariel rescued from a cruel rabble of boys who were throwing rocks at it a few years ago. She follows him everywhere, and is very posessive of him. She likes to walk around at his ankles when they walk around towns and such, but for longer journeys, she preffers to ride on his shoulders. They share a special bond, which allows him to communicate with her to an extent, but she only understands extremely simple commands. Sometimes, in attempting to obey a command, she can cause more problems than she solves.

Good character. Here are the changes I need you to make so I can approve you:

- Be more specific as to how long it would take to heal from different types of wounds with Regeneration.

- Lose either the night vision or far sight with silver-sight.

- Be more specific as to your proficiency with your fighting style and aerial combat.

- State outright that the spear is steel, not just the shaft. (Just in case...)

- I'm not going to allow that armor as it is. Since you have such a history for it, I greatly encourage you to create a quest once this profile is approved and RP the encounter with the dragon, requesting the armor as a spoil from said quest.

- The runes... now we get to the sketchy part. They're WAY too powerful and unrestricted for a level zero character. If you don't want to have to remove them, you're going to have to convince me a character of your level should be able to have them (i.e. remove all rune effects but one and/or make them useable once a day for a few minutes). Remember, your rune knowledge can be improved with quests and level ups, but I can't have them as they are for now.

Cheers.

I made the changes requested. I reduced the number of known runes to two, and added a lot more restrictions and specifications to them.

I was kind of hoping that I could keep the armour, as it has a story behind it which is actually much longer than the description posted, and in many ways is integral to the character's history. I was planning on revealing that story later on, as I intend to do with a lot of the blank-spots in the character's history. I used to always post my character's entire history whenever I made an RP profile, but over time, I discovered that it was a lot more fun, and a lot less time consuming for whoever's approving me, if I keep it vauge at first and define it later.

It should be noted that, other than the resistance to heat and the pliability, the armour really isn't that much more effective than armour of similar construction made of steel. But if you still say it has to go, then I'll get rid of it.

Well done, mate. We'll have you RPing here in no time.

You've pleaded your case for the armor effectively, so I'll let it stay if you add in that it'll only protect against weak fire-based attacks, is slightly more pliable and that its consistent with steel otherwise. I know you stated so already, but put it in your profile.

Everything else is great.

You will not be allowed to sell that armor, not that I imagine you planned to.

Have fun on the site.

Approved.
