Name: Hadewych (HAH-du-veekh), aka Hade (Hah-du)
Age: Unknown
Race: Cyborg, a mixture of at least two different species
Hair Color: Nonexistent
Eye Color: The tumultuous blue-grey of a cold sea.
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 161 lbs
Occupation: Transient
Appearance:
A note on her metal bits: these are of an unknown alloy and are not particularly strong or valuable.
Whilst Hade's torso is human-like and she has a decidedly upright stance despite her slouch, the 'borg walks on her toes (claws, rather) -- four long mechanical ones to each foot. She is mostly machine, a body composed of working mechanical parts in various stages of disrepair. Metal, wood, wire, gears and pulleys and snatches of bone from numerous animals combine to support her gangly frame, kept from falling apart and failing her completely by a durability spell. The strong magic is detectable by sensitive beings.
Her head is encased in a patchwork gunmetal-grey alloy and wood (presumably oak) skull, with sockets that reveal her organic grey eyes. It is vaguely reptilian in configuration, with an elongated snout and an organic lower jaw with pebbly black skin. Her teeth are long and knife-like; the skull casing has given her an overbite, so the upper row of actual bone teeth which have somehow been implanted into it are always visible. Hadewych's neck is long and slender, flexible, entirely mechanical with pointed vertebrae. Her right arm, however, looks like it belongs on a young woman; the skin is smooth, pale if slightly tanned, the rosy nails kept short and the four fingers and thumb thin, tapering and calloused. The limb is attached to her mechanical self at the elbow and dons a small blue clockwise spiral on the palm, hidden by the dirty black cloth she has wrapped the hand in. The left appendage is mechanical and has four lengthy clawed digits and an opposable thumb. She wears a spacious and weather-beaten brown tricorn.
Hade also has a pair of wings, although for the time being they are incapable of flight. Sprouting from her shoulders, their basic structure seems to be made of metal, but a few ragged brown, black and mottled white feathers and down hang limply from the almost bare rims. Other feathers apparently grow from the machinery on and around her neck, stopping shortly underneath her chin. They are thick and brown and fluff when she feels threatened. She often drapes an overly large black sea cloak over her shoulders and the aforementioned wings, and carries her possessions in it's pockets. A cracked brown leather belt with a large brass buckle is hitched across her chest and is attached to a faded red sash tied around her waist. Myriad hemp and rope bracelets braided with colourful beads and bone adorn her wrists and ankles and have been woven around and through her clothing and any exposed bit of her body. Some wooden and stone trinkets hang from these and clatter softly as she moves. The portions of her body which are covered are done so by thin, plated (for mobility) sheets of pale metal that have seemingly random designs painted on them in black dye.
She walks with a slight limp and uses a plain walking staff. Only the faintest of whirring noises can be heard from her joints, although her clawed feet tend to clank on hard surfaces. Hadewych uses an external voice box located at the base of her neck on what might be her clavicle for communication. The sound quality tends to be filled with static and breaks up a bit, but it conveys emotion beautifully.
History:
A group of treasure hunters found it slumped in the great cabin of a wrecked galleon. It obviously hadn't been there long, as it's fleshy parts had yet to begin rotting, but it remained unresponsive as they attempted rousing it. The leader of the group, a middle-aged fisherman's widow called Regina who was an accomplished witch, wanted to bring the oddity back with them. But her companions complained about having to carry even more weight, loaded as they were with booty discovered on the ship. Regina acquiesced and returned later, alone, with a plan. The thing intrigued her more than it rightly should have. Using a powerful spell of her own creation, Regina gave it life.
The weird machine suffered from amnesia and acted disoriented and confused, but Regina was able to soothe it through the temporary bond she had forged along with the casting of the spell. They soon left the dismal wreck together. The cyborg chose a female identity for itself in honour of it's saviour, and accepted the name of Hadewych which was a title Regina had always liked. For two years they remained together. All the while Hadewych was developing her own personality, much to the disdain of Regina who was growing wary of the cyborg's increasing independence. When the strain between them became violent, Hadewych fled after accidentally knocking Regina unconscious and has been wandering about for a few years, taking the odd job but never staying in any single place long.
Skills:
Auto-Heal
The magic that keeps her well-worn body running is capable of repairing minor damage done to her mechanical parts, albeit slowly. But the damage can not be too extensive, else she must seek outside help -- which can be a problem, considering the nature of many of her parts. This does not apply to wood or bone, which'll have to replaced. (A quick note: She does not run on electricity, but rather a combination of the spell and hydro power, meaning she must keep a certain amount of water stored in her system at all times that is converted into energy and mixed into an organic compound that runs through her "veins" and serves as a lubricant and internal cleansing agent. The spell provides her main power source.)
Chorus
Her voice box is capable of repeating and creating any sound imaginable. She can change her voice, normally that of a mature female human's, to match any timbre and tone, and she can mimic every-day sounds such as footsteps, bird calls, gun shots, wind blowing leaves, ect.. This gives her a great advantage with languages. The quality is a little warped, though, and she can't get the volume to a damaging decibel level.
Memory
Hade's brain is supplemented with software that allows her to instantly memorize anything she sees or hears. It would undoubtedly be of great use if it didn't keep malfunctioning. Because of a hit she sustained to her head which along with damaging her left-sided auditory system knocked her internal parts around, Hadewych is prone to memory loss and rarely stores any acquired information longer than a few days, sometimes hours and even minutes. There are a few exceptions -- she can hold onto names and identities fairly well, and even remember locations, details of her surroundings and schematics and a few conversations. Most of the time. Even these are eventually lost in order to make room for new events and suchlike, as her software has a limit on how much it can hold and routinely replaces old information with new.
Temperature control
There are four small fans stationed at strategic locations inside her that turn on when her internal sensors find that the temperature is too high, to help keep her from overheating. There are also four heaters that activate during the cold for similar reasons. These apparatuses work in tandem with the spell, which provides some protection from temperature fluctuations in itself, but she can still succumb to the extremes of hot and cold, especially seeing as many of her internal parts are exposed. Her ideal internal temperature is around 71 degrees F., which allows water to move without evaporating or freezing.
Forecast
She can read the weather, wind and tides, and can successfully predict near-future weather conditions 95% of the time.
Waterproof
Her system is waterproof and the spell helps maintain that. She can hold her breath for up to ten minutes and is capable of flooding her system to either walk on the bottom or be able to swim (albeit clumsily). She is not impervious to great pressure, however.
Staff as a weapon
Ability: Above Average
She is equally strong with both defensive and offensive techniques and can more than hold her own with similarly-skilled opponents. Hade practices often with her staff.
Telekinesis/elemental manipulation
Ability: Basic
She can use energy from the spell surrounding her to lift and transport small objects such as pebbles and twigs and can manipulate minute quantities of water. Yet this is not effective in battle and for the moment is just something she is experimenting with, nothing more.
Mechanical prowess
Ability: Above Average
Being about 90% composed of machinery, Hade has learned how to make basic repairs to her own self and can macguyver needed parts reasonably well. This pertains to other mechanical devices that she might run across.
Fasting
She does not need to eat very often; once or twice a week is sufficient. She'll consume protein and starchy foods. Her highly effective mechanical digestive track wastes nothing, and for this reason she does not defecate. Urine is not produced in the traditional sense; there are several vents located about her body which periodically expel a mixture of water and any debris found in her system, including occasional mineral deposits which thrive on the water/compound mixture that acts as her blood. Food is immediately converted into energy to help power her hydro-systems via internal combustion. Hade has to drink around seven cups of water a day in order to run her best, although she'll also take tea and alcohol. She has a forked and mildly prehensile dark blue organic tongue that can taste things, if not to the extent of most.
A note: Hadewych is no more fast, strong, and agile then your average human, and is highly vulnerable to injury, pain and death. She can go without sleep for a couple of days, five at most, but needs it eventually to power down and rejuvenate herself. Her sense of smell is human-normal, her hearing and sight is slightly depleted but this does not hinder her.
Equipment:
One pair of simple wire bifocals to remedy her poor sight in her left eye.
One small toolkit containing a wrench, pliers, a rusting switchblade, and a vial of mild adhesive. The tools are made from crude wood and iron.
Three hide flasks.
One roll of old bandages.
One small book bound in blue, possibly a fantasy adventure novel.
One journal which she writes important things down in before she forgets them.
Two osprey feather quills.
One vial of black ink.
A cloth pouch to hold her gold.
One ornamental rapier hilt, sans the actual blade.
One plain hardwood staff.
