Pretty self-explanatory title. My best work yet. :)
If you do write with music on, what do you play? Classical? Metal? Pop? R&B? Soul?
Any specific artists, songs or albums?
My writing playlist usually consists of instrumental soundtracks. Right now, I have the Final Fantasy Piano Collections (VII - X-2).

I can't write without music.
If I can't decide on a cd, I'll listen to the playlist on my myspace profile. If I can single out something, it'll most likely be bluesy rock, hip hop, or indie rock.

Always. I have a specific playlist for each character. The one for TWW is...
Trigun Soundtrack - Perfect Night
ICP - Boogy Woogy Woo
Coheed and Cambria - Welcome Home
The String Quartet - Seven Nation Army
Dave Matthews Band - Halloween
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood
The Used - The Bird and the Worm

I used to have the Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack surrounded upon one character. That was some impressive instrumental music right there.

Hmm, I was just listening to "Welcome Home" on my myspace as I typed up my first response to this thread. "Clint Eastwood" came on immediately after that.

I always write with music on, I sometimes can't concentrate without it unless I'm in my 'zone' then I'm like spacing out.
I listen to different bands sometimes depending on which character I'm writing as. but a few are:
Skillet, 12 Stones, Within Temptation, Nightwish, Celldweller, Soilwork, NIN, Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Chevelle, Rise Against
And if I'm writing something tricky and can't have the lyrical distraction I listen to the 300 sound track.

I don't like having lyrics while writing, mostly because I sing along. Sometimes, I almost don't realize I'm singing.
Or I type out the words to the song while writing.
"Panic-stricken, Veatrix broke out into an impressive run, not really looking where she was going umbrella ella-ella-eh-eh-eh."

Writing in silence? That's preposterous!
I listen to Russel Peters and Demetri Martin! What? comedians are artists. Plus, one's indian and the other does play the guitar.
True evil can only be written on soft songs, so it's the Ink Spots and Sinatra! Anything else is a mix of the Beatles, Johnny Cash and Tull, with some of the weirder songs from Genesis.
And naturally, Fuck Her Gently by Tenacious D.

I often have specific soundtacks for threads that I listen to each time I write a post for that thread. For example, my recent battle "Santeria" (named after a Sublime song) was written to Sublime's Greatest Hits.
For one of the solos I'm working on right now I use the Across the Universe soundtrack.
For my battle "The Gloaming" (named after a song by Radiohead) I usually listen to Radiohead's 'Hail to the Thief'.
Otherwise, I just kinda put on whatever I feel like. When I'm writing a female character (doesn't happen very often) I sometimes put on Nelly furtado in order to get the whole female voice thing happening. Plus she's pretty sexy.
Bands I frequently use are ACDC, Sting and the Police, Foghat, Bob Marley, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphies, Moxy Fruvous, Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, Team of Captains, Wax Mannequin, and occasionally Great Big Sea or Stan Rogers.
I've also been known to write to the smooth tunes of Chopin and various Italian Operas. My favourite is La Donna รจ Mobile as performed by Luciano Pavarotti.

While I write, I like to listen to rock and roll of all sorts, usually heavy metal or death .

Write with music on, you say...?
I might have to try that and see if my writing improves. (Shouldn't take much. XD) Not sure what playlists fit my characters though - maybe some bigband jazz for Bevel, real 'Rat Pack' stuff, and some more lunatic rock or metal for Alcyone.
Throw in some Enya for the stargazing scenes, maybe.
Edit: How could I have forgotten MUSE? Thanks, Bushido! *Cues up Starlight.*

I listen to alot of music, I sometimes shuffle it, alot of it being 90's rock. Not the wussy rock of today *spits on killers and muse*
-le gasp- what's this Oren does not listen to music while writing?!
Nah... that would be me lying. I do, but some days it just feels too distracting to write with music playing.

Thanks, A Nony Mouse and Ataraxis, Russel Peters is hilarious! Though recently I've been watching/listening to Jeff Dunham's Spark of Insanity. I love Achmed the dead Terrorist. ^^

Depends on my mood. Whatever I listen while I'm not writing I can usually listen to while I write.
I don't think it affects my writing mood THAT much.
Muse is good for writing, then again so is early Cradle of Filth. And then there's my favourite emo quintet, My Chemical Romance.
When I feel like writing though I'll put on one of the LotR soundtracks though. They're so pretty.

I can't write with music on. It's distracting and leads to errors I wouldn't usually make.
Though soft songs without lyrics can sometimes help without hindering.

Music is just too distracting to write to for me. My thought process works best with silence or natural sounds. I love music but I like to get into the mood and enjoy what the song's creator is trying to do and I just can't when I'm creating something else.

That is blastphemy, sir. I'll have to ask that you splode nao. If you're just hearing the stuff they play on the radio, I can understand your confusion, as the greatest of Muse is not heard by the general public, only by those who buy the cd...or steal the cd's of friends. >.>

Spitting on Muse is idiotic. Jeez, even their mainstream stuff manages to be good.
On that note, Knights of Cydonia is a good song for me to get into the mood of a dramatic showdown.

Heh, I just got a Muse CD for my birthday today; Black Holes & Revelation; is that a good album of theirs?
And to the topic, I use Aqualung, Coldplay, Radiohead or Groove Armada mostly.

Oh, if anyone is interested in videogame instrumentals with a twist, there is a site called OCRemix (http://www.ocremix.org).
It produces videogame music remixed, some of which are very impressive.

Music helps me write, but I usually don't have it on in respect for my roommate. When I can write with music, it completely depends on the character. One character can't be written without reggae, strangely enough. And it's probably the last one anyone would guess.

I listen to a band called 'Gregorian' whilst writing casually, and System of A Down or other heavier bands for fight sequences

Hells yeah.
Music definitely helps me write and get in the "mood".
I don't have a certain preferred genre for any one character, although I like coordinating, say, dark music with similar writing and so on and so forth.
Edit: Muse, 'Knights is luv

Instrumental FTW. ;)
However, I'm more into Japanese and Classical than heavy metal or punk. I do stray into some jazz and soft rock, but that's about it. The music really has to catch my attention to grace my Winamp list.
*Looks at a bunch of Hayashibara Megumi, mihimaru GT, SNoW and Aya Hirano songs on the player*
^_^;
But, yeah. Classicals like Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin are really good to set the mood. I have trouble finding the right one to use for special situations, though...
EDIT: Oh, yeah. And then there's Patchelbel's Canon in D in various versions. I love the Trio Con Brio version.

I play a bard. You do the math.
Mostly Heavy Metal(classic bands), Power Metal, some Goth, Death Metal... If it rocks, I listen to it. Bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Motorhead, Mercyful Fate, IE, Dragonforce, Bolt Thrower, Maiden, MCR(black parade only), Skynyrd, Kid, BOC...

Muse for the win, whores.
Actually, if i'm writing there is usually a silence over the room, usually because my PC is a works pc (and apparantly my office feel there isn't a need for a soundcard in their machines, whatever that's about).
However, if I had the chance, my album of choice would have to be Tool - 10,000 days. I'm sorry, I don't care what people say, it's just awesome.
I also like a bit of inspiration, in the form of Chasey Lain.

I have discovered the beauty that is Enya.
Listening to piano music really helps me with my creativity. I guess
music is a good stimulant (or something like that). If there would be
silence in the room, my mind would probably go blank too often.
