View Full Version : Lavinia Ash (the Rook)

Lavinia
04-27-08, 06:32 AM
Name: Lavinia Ash
Age: 21
Race: Rook (also known as a Castler)
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Pale blue-grey
Height: Taller than average
Weight: Thinner than average
Occupation: Traveller, chessplayer

Personality: Lavinia has been described as a 'cold, ruthless, manipulative bitch', a 'machine robot girl' and a 'fucking waste of time'. She refers to herself as a Castler, or a Rook. She is neither brave, nor cowardly. Determined might be a good word; merciless would be better. She likes nothing better than to beat someone at their own game, or better still, at hers. Victory is her only goal. Her pride is considerable, but she is calculating and sly and will attempt to get anything to her own advantage. Untrustworthy but honest, most of the time, she hates to cheat. What is the point of playing, she reasons, if you don't want to?

What is she playing? Life; and so far she's damned good at it.

She prefers to distance herself from people, but isn't above travelling with another if there are some benefits to be had. Emotionless is an exaggeration- but sums her up to an extent. She loves to triumph - she's an adrenalin junkie and there's nothing better than the thrill of the game. She'll gamble her life away but win it back in a second. Deceitful. A gifted actress. She knows how to exploit people and she's good at it.

A few things: She hates to use gold for purchases, preferring to barter if possible. She would betray a friend in a heartbeat. The name 'Lavinia' comes from the Aeneid, a girl who set fire to her own fair hair (a good omen). She is extremely good at chess (strangely enough). She is completely blind to colour and sees everything in black and white.

Appearance: Beautiful like modern architecture is beautiful; all glass and cold steel and light and shadows and nothing inbetween. Her hair is dark, and long, her face is strangely rigid-looking and calm - all the time calm. Pale skin, pale lips, pale eyes and dark, dark lashes. Her body is angular with none of the curves and softness of most women. She could be graceful, but she's not. She could never steal a man's heart, but rock could be wooed by her eyes. She sees in black and white and grey, and thus her clothes and jewellery are either plain black or white, or a strange mix of colours.

Her clothes are generally made simply, of undyed cloth or dusty black linen. Accesories are generally a mismatched chaos of colour, as she cannot see how they clash and co-ordinate.

History: (very brief)

Lavinia was born in a castle in the air, where she was taught chess - the one pure game. She and her sister, Lavender, were the Black Rooks: they wore curious crowns made of a dark, polished wood, lorded it over the Bishops and Knights, and of course the Pawns, and served only the King and the Queen. The Black King at that time was only an child, a three-year-old toddler who seemed to understand the game completely. The Black Queen was an older woman, with dark, sparkling eyes and long, chestnut hair, and a way about her that seemed to slip in and out of vision. The game was a serious game - of life and death, in fact - and unfortunately, Lavender was Taken by the White Queen only days after the opening move. She never returned. Lavinia, distraught, was determined to win the game, and after the Black Queen was Taken, her and a Bishop figured out a complicated Checkmate and won the game.

Lavinia escaped the game, with her chessboard, her Piece and her life. She travelled to Corone, where she became an assassin for a while but left because of the disappointment. The image was of romance, drama and excitement - instead, it was ritual killing of innocent people for greedy men and women with too much money and too little occupation. After quitting as an assassing, her life lacked a course - and it was then that she cast her mind back to the game. To the intricate moves, danger and triumph, life, death and the heady brew of victory. She once again dug out her chessboard and her piece (a carving of herself in that same dark wood as the crown she had worn as a Rook. She took again her title of the Black Rook, and began to search for people to complete her chessboard - Kings, Queens, Pawns, Bishops and Knights.

Skills:

As a Rook...

Castling: Lavinia has the ability to castle; to swap things with something else. So far this has the following restrictions on it:
-The item to be castled with must be a maximum of ten metres away
-Must not be alive
-Must be smaller than a foot in all directions
-Must be holding or touching the item to be castled.
-Lasts for three posts only or ten minutes IC (whichever is shorter)
For example, if she was holding a pebble, and another person was holding a necklace, she could castle it, trading their positions. This would last ten minutes or three posts and then would automatically return.

As a Chesspiece...

Opening: Double speed. Once per thread only, and once at the beginning of combat, and only for a distance of ten metres or less.

Check:: Directs her gaze at someone to make them move out of the way or into a desired area. At the moment, only makes the recipient feel uncomfortable.

As a person...

Accuracy: Above average.

Equipment:

Two throwing knives (steel blade, double up as daggers. Always clean and sharp.)
Chessboard (Impressive wood-and-glass chessboard.)
Black rook (A carving of herself made of dark wood.)
Rook's crown (A curious headpiece made of the same wood as the Rook)
Changes of clothes
