UPDATES IN DARK ORCHID
Basic Character Traits
Name: Veatrix Bane
Race: Human, with hints of Pharoas (Butterfly Elf)
Sex: Female
Age: 20, give or take a few months
Height: 5’4”
Weight: 95 lbs.
Hair Colour: Golden blonde
Eye Colour: Chestnut brown
Physical and Personality Characteristics
Appearance:
Having grown from the sickly girl she used to look like, Veatrix is much more voluptuous, but mostly because her personality has undergone much change as well. She’s leaner, fitter and stands with confidence. Her eyes are unremarkable, a soft chestnut brown, an expression of helplessness. Her eyelashes are inhumanly thick, silver and glistening, almost four times the length of normal eyelashes. Her chestnut eyes are framed by a beautifully pale round face and smooth cheekbones, ended by a charming nose and lips that love to smile, albeit awkwardly. After the traumatic deaths of her birth father and adoptive mother, Veatrix fell into a brief but painful coma – she grew crystal clear wings, spanning the length of her back. When spread out fully, her size seems to be doubled, and after a terrifying ordeal with an unknown Greater Power and Death himself, Veatrix has learned to fully control the wings, much like any other part of her body.
Personality:
Veatrix was a shy girl at heart, but since moving to Scara Brae, she has gained a significant amount of self-confidence. But after being uprooted from the port city of novice adventurers to Radasanth, Veatrix’s heart has hardened significantly. Nevertheless, she still enjoys seeking refuge in books, particularly her mysterious Tome of Lestrange. At first glance, Veatrix may seem small and harmless, but another look tells otherwise, as her stance and her demeanour is one that is not to be lightly trifled with. She puts up a good fight, as the spells she learned from the Tome of Lestrange can pull her out of tough situations. Veatrix is hardier and power-hungry, tempered by the realization that power is what she wanted all along. She travels Althanas with a cynical, almost cruel, view of life.
Character Arsenal
Clothing: black corset (http://althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=15347), white cotton dress shirt (http://althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=15347), black cotton dress pants (http://althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=15347), lavender-black ballerina shoes (http://althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=15347)
Items: medium-sized satchel of water, Tome of Lestrange (see Character Special Abilities), Gainsborough (http://althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=15347) (a steel short sword embedded with two pearl inlays, no magical properties)
Character Special Abilities
Protego – A spell learned from the Tome of Lestrange. An invisible spherical barrier appears around Veatrix’s body, on her vocal command. The wall is thick enough to deflect all humanoid physical attacks up to five times stronger than a regular man and can hold off very strong magical attacks. Though it has gotten stronger in power, it still only lasts for 10 minutes.
Illumina – A spell learned from the Tome of Lestrange. Adorned with many uses, the spell can be a simple lighting spell, or a destructive light-based attack, effective with nocturnal beasts. The malleable energy is at most 1000 degrees Celsius and can severely burn victims even without contact but with close enough range, but Veatrix is unaffected by the heat. The ball can also be fashioned, on Veatrix’s mental command, into any shape or size, maintaining the same heat and lighting properties of the ball. The bigger the shape is made, the more heat is distributed around the surface, making a big weapon less effective, but a smaller one potentially lethal. Experience has taught her to use this skill more effectively, and as of now, she is a master at it.
Hiela – A spell learned from the Tome of Lestrange. The power of this spell has changed drastically, mostly because Veatrix has gotten much stronger. The ice can be used in many shapes and forms, but the temperature is always -40 degrees Celsius. When using the spell, Veatrix’s hands become extremely cold, able enough to completely freeze over a small pool or bathtub, and they emit strange blue ice dust. Through her training, Veatrix has become a master at the spell.
Oceania – A spell learned from the Tome of Lestrange. This water manipulation spell has many uses, but it is always based on one condition – there must be a body of water present for Veatrix to manipulate. Veatrix can control an amount of water equal to the size of a small pool, with the shape and speed of the water fully under her grasp. Still a new spell, Veatrix is still only average with it.
Pharotongue – A natural talent, honed through years of practice in her backyard garden. Allows her to speak with butterflies in a strange, hissing language. Initially a dormant gene from Butterfly Elf heritage, the language was unearthed at around puberty.
Flight – After her crystal clear wings grew out of her back, Veatrix spent a good amount of time trying to get them to fly. Though she is still very green to the skill, Veatrix can hover in one spot, and over short distance. She could never go for long flight, because she would become too tired to even lift herself up. With practice, Veatrix’s flight skill would likely improve, but as of now, her wings are basically hardy appendages.
Swordplay – After her late father Victor Bane gave Veatrix Gainsborough, a pearl-decorated steel short sword, she trained herself on how to use the sword. She’d seen many an adventurer wield the sword expertly through her travels and picking up the art was not as difficult as it seemed. Nevertheless, Veatrix’s technique is sloppy and far from perfect. Against a trained swordsman, she is no match, but her unconventional skill is highly unpredictable. As of now, she is an average swordswoman.
Tome of Lestrange – Stolen from the Forbidden section in a small Corone library, the spell book is a mysterious piece of magical literature. Seemingly intelligent, the tome only allows the reader to read spells they are “worthy” of learning, though Veatrix is unaware of this. She only realizes that she can only read six pages of the book (title page, foreword, the four spells she learned), as the letters begin shuffling when she turns to other pages. She may be able to read more of the book if she becomes stronger.
Character Background and History
Relations:
Cassandra Bane, adoptive mother to Veatrix Bane, deceased
Victor Bane, town barber, father to Veatrix Bane, deceased
Llewelyn Johns, Scara Brae peasant, father to Lacey and foster father to Veatrix Bane, location unknown
Lacey Johns, Scara Brae peasant, son of Llewelyn and foster brother to Veatrix Bane, location unknown
History:
Born on an ordinary day to ordinary parents in an ordinary town, Veatrix Bane was supposed to be ordinary. Unfortunately, being born in a completely ordinary village, where there was no violence or famine or poverty, played to her utter disadvantage. Veatrix just wasn’t ordinary enough.
She was just like any other little girl. Clingy with their mothers, loving towards their fathers, did well in school, ate ravenously but did not gain weight, was tomboy-ish to a fault. The only difference is she was part-Butterfly Elf - her birth mother, whom she never knew, was a Butterfly Elf. Mocked and rejected while growing up, Veatrix was a troubled child.
Being a Butterfly Elf wasn’t the best thing to be living in Veatrix’s ordinary village. They believed that anything out of the ordinary was evil, as they were too conservative for their own good. Butterfly Elves weren’t different from any other elf, except they had an affinity toward butterflies. They grew beautiful butterfly wings, had lavish eyelashes, longer than any human’s, and could speak Pharotongue, the ancient language of the butterflies. They were a wonderful race, if only the village did not hunt down the only Butterfly Elf colony in Althanas existence. Had that colony been located somewhere, Butterfly Elves would still exist, but unfortunately, that colony lived right beside Veatrix’s ordinary village. After many screams of defiance, captive Elves and a forest fire or three, the whole race fell into extinction.
Veatrix’s father, Victor Bane the town barber, tried to be as patient as he could be with her growing wings, and made it Veatrix’s painful memory. Giving her barrels of alcohol, Veatrix got drunker than… well, ever. Her parents cut her little wings off with jagged scissors amongst the blood, screams and shedding insect scales. She couldn’t remember a thing the next morning, but she felt a sharp pain exploding in her back every now and then. Sad, really, and nobody would know what her wings could have looked like. When Victor and Cassandra finally told her the story of her shoulder blade stumps, a few months after her 18th birthday, she left, unable to contain her anger.
Arriving at Scara Brae, Veatrix was taken in by Llewelyn and Lacey Johns, two peasants that she developed familial feelings for. She spent a few months in their company, living with them as a part of their family. Despite the new family she had acquired, her experiences in Scara Brae opened her eyes to the horrors of the world. Being exposed to debauchery, lust and prostitution, and death made Veatrix’s heart just a little colder and just a little harder.
Veatrix’s life was thrown into shambles when the Pharoas Queen Victoria Diwatah sent assassin to kill her for defiling her pure Butterfly Elf blood. Although the assassins were unsuccessful in hunting down Veatrix, Cassandra and Victor Bane both died in the escapade. Forced to flee Scara Brae, Veatrix, along with Lacey and Llewelyn, boarded a rickety old passenger ship to Radasanth. Unfortunately, the ship sank close to the shoreline of Radasanth, while Veatrix was in a mysterious coma. At the same time, her wings painfully grew from her back. Washing up on the shore safely, with Lacey and Llewelyn unconscious but alive, Veatrix decided to walk away from her lovely life with the Johns. Her coma made her realize that she desired power above all else – it could likely be the ghost’s personality speaking, or just the dormant part of Veatrix’s heart wanting to be set free. Walking away from a good life, Veatrix set out to wander Althanas.
So her story goes.
