Overview
Full Name: Dharaan Morgradt
Race: Elf
Age: 183
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 133 lbs
Hair: Pale blonde
Eyes: Deep blue
Skin Tone: Caucasian
Languages: Common, Raiaeran, Sign Language
Occupation: Researcher
Notes: Dharaan is mute, and as such cannot converse with anyone who's not adept in sign language if without his quill and parchment.
Appearance
Dharaan shares the natural lankiness and elegance of his Elven brethren. Much of this grace is marred by his rather dimunitive height, but other than that, his racial features are unmistakable. He covers most of his body with the traditional robes of a Raiaeran student: plain and red, without fancy patterns or any other acknowledgements of greatness. His fingers are long and spindly, his face long and sharp, with a tall forehead but without any pronounced jawline. His face is as ageless as that of his kin, with eyes of dark sapphire that have only just begun to show the eerie glance of knowledge that no mortal being could ever hope to possess. Framing this all is a cascade of platinum strands, draped around his shoulders as though it were a silky hood.
Personality
The inability to converse normally caused Dharaan to become somewhat of a loner in his early youth, and even though he forced himself to be involved with social happenings whenever he could, his handicap never allowed him more than a few close friends. He is generally easy to trust, and adamantly loyal to any commitment he has made in the past - perhaps because he has been, at least until now, completely oblivious to the notion of treachery. He sees no need to tell lies, knowing that more often than not, not telling the truth only means postponing trouble - never averting them. His occupation as a researcher is perfectly in line with his thirst for new knowledge. He is proud of the Elves as a race of beauty and wisdom, but does acknowledge that other races, too, have areas of expertise that transcend Elven ability, and as such does not look down upon them.
History
Dharaan was born as the third child of the House Morgradt, a small but politically strongly entrenched family of nobles in central Eluriand. Although always at the centre of a web of intrigue and diplomacy, Lord Morgradt was generally known to keep his children out of his own affairs, allowing them insight into the ways of politics only when they showed interest upon reaching adulthood. Still, public image remained an important factor in determining the House's persuasive power, and when his third offspring was diagnosed with a genetic defect to his vocal chords, the Lord decided after due deliberation to place him under guardianship of his brother; Dharaan grew up calling his uncle a father, and his father an uncle. Even today, he is oblivious as to who his true father is, and the shame he brought upon his family by not being capable of performing song magic.
Despite his rather cold decision, the Lord Morgradt did apparently care enough for his son to allow him a proper education, providing Dharaan's father-in-name with sufficient funds to pay for the mute's tutoring. Dharaan himself, in the meanwhile, vowed that although he would never be able to practise the highest of Raiaeran arts, he would work hard not to be looked down upon. And he succeeded; he was a rising star in many of the more mundane subjects, such as chemistry and biology. Even though it was rather painful to see his friends and classmates progress further down the path of Song Magic, he tried hard to find a substitute for the art that would allow him equal abilities even without the use of his voice.
Eventually, during his fifth year attending the Istien University, he met with an eccentric Song Mage dean known as Reisthel. After several months of cogitation and experimentation, the slightly insane dean appeared to have found a way to trade one art for the other, without losing the magic inspired by the songs' harmony. And so it was that Dharaan learned how to draw creatures with so much detail that they actually came to life, how to calligraph words with such precision and beauty that they could evoke reality-altering events. It took him fifteen years to gain a basic understanding of this new art, which Reisthel had aptly named photomancy. The dean mysteriously disappeared two years after this, taking away any source of knowledge about the magic that Dharaan could learn from.
It was then that Dharaan realized that to learn more about this obscure branch of Elven magic, he would need to do actual fieldwork. With permission from his uncle and a rather proud Lord Morgradt, he left for Corone, where he applied for association with the continent's Rangers. At the moment, he is stationed in a small watchpost at the edge of Concordia Forest, studying the many different flora and fauna that thrive there.
Skills
Photomancy
(The art of making the written word or drawn images come to life.)
Level: 0
Phonetic Note - Although Dharaan was never able to actually produce any song magic due to his vocal impairment, he, like his fellow students, was not spared the endless lecturing and theoretical tutoring on the subject by his Raiaeran teachers. Such extensive knowledge of how sound comes to be allows him to write any sound he has ever heard on a piece of parchment, and, depending on the way he jotted it down, making the sound be heard at a desired time at any volume or intonation imaginable. Such notes are for one-time use only; the magic required to move the air around the note into vibration is so much that the parchment used is effectively incinerated as soon as Dharaan lets the spell take effect.
Alchemy
(The art of combining nature's many aspects into certain amalgamations bearing boosting effects for oneself, or damaging effects for enemies.)
Level: 0
Identification - With his current knowledge, Dharaan can, by studying any kind of non-magical flora for a while, say with certainty whether the plant is edible or in possession of any useful properties (e.g. hallicunogens, paralyzing venoms).
Items
Parchment and quill, the former enchanted so that he can erase whatever he's drawn upon it whenever he wishes, the latter enchanted so that it does not require any external source of ink to function properly.
