Ethel
07-08-08, 12:13 PM
Name: Ethel May Ackart
Age: 23
Race: Human
Hair Color: Flat chestnut brown
Eye Color: Grey-blue, although you wouldn't know it for all she avoids direct eye contact
Height: 131 lbs
Weight: 5'7"
Occupation: Scullery maid
Personality:
Courteous, gentle, soft-spoken, subservient - all highly desirable traits in a woman of her profession, and all traits Ethel has had pegged from a young age. She is an incredibly modest and retiring character, the kind of person that is never noticed in crowded rooms and has perfected the art of blending subtly into the background of nearly every situation. Quiet, naive and lacking in confidence, she is easily taken advantage of and just as easily forgotten.
Ethel does have a stronger side to her, but it is rare to appear.
Appearance:
A willowy, unassuming and rather plain-looking young woman, Ethel's only feature of mild interest might be the freckles lightly spattered across the bridge of her large, straight nose. Her thin lips are the palest bleached coral shade, and her faintly acne-scarred skin is pasty and frequently blushing. The maid has a plump, heart-shaped face that adds a bit of ordinary charm, and surprisingly delicate eyebrows. Her spindly hands bare the marks of hard labour through permanently reddened knuckles and calloused fingertips.
She begins her journey wearing the uniform she donned the morning she fled the family house - a sallow rose dress with long loose sleeves tailored especially to suit the needs of a working maid, a white apron, a white bonnet to keep her shoulder-length hair tidy and out of the way, and a shoddy moss-green cloak. A pair of thick brown boots finish the attire somewhat awkwardly.
History:
Ethel was born in Eluriand and had a sheltered childhood with loving lower-class parents. Like generations before her she entered service and with a few good words on her behalf from the Lady's maid, who knew her mother personally, Ethel acquired a job at the Szabo family's great house as the new scullery maid. It was decent work.
The home residents were recently forced to flee Eluriand at short notice with Xem'zûnd's attack, deciding to brave Niadath Pass and find possible refuge with old if eccentric friends in Alerar. In the chaotic midst of an ambush by a band of desperate raiders on the way to the pass, Ethel was separated from her small convoy and suddenly forced to make the journey alone.
Skills:
As the lowest ranking female servant in the house, Ethel assisted the kitchen maid and was often given the most physically demanding tasks. As such, she is adept at cleaning floors, pots and pans, regular dishware, stoves, and other related duties. Nothing to write home about. She can also read and write.
Chopping veggies and somesuch - Ethel is above average in skill with your average chopping knife, when it comes to...chopping things. She can chop leeks at high speeds without cutting herself and knows how to butcher meat.
Sewing - average.
Intuition - She seems to have an innate sense of how uncomplicated mechanical devices function, and if provided adequate resources can fashion simple tools herself. Somewhat of an inventor, average skill.
Equipment:
Nothing but her savings in a coin purse and a single steel steak knife with a wood handle that she has tucked into her apron pocket, the blade wrapped in a piece of stolen leather.
