Tine ChorWen (pronounced Tee-nay Kor-Wen)
Female
40 years (barely an adult in Drow years)
5’7” 130 pounds
White Hair
Black Eyes
Reluctant and lonely fighter
Appearance: From the top, a pair of large and unmistakable elf ears protrude from the black hood she often wears while traveling. One might mistake the woman as a normal elf if not for the pale gray skin that reflects moonlight fairly well and her long hair of pure white. Her black eyes are often downcast and radiating a feeling of melancholy. Fairly agile and of medium height, her lithe figure is pleasing to look at. Tine sports a brown lamella cuirass armor that is made mostly out of scales of hard boiled leather. For the materials used, it offers excellent protection against cuts and thrusts, but only decent protection against crushes. On her hips is a short mottled brown and green skirt made out of more supple leather, offering her mobility at the expense of protection. The cuirass protects her torso fairly well, and a set of steel bracers protects her wrists and forearms. A pair of thigh-high leather boots and a long cloak that hangs from her shoulders complete the ensemble. However, her upper arms and hands themselves are left bare, as are her upper thighs. Underneath her cuirass she usually wears a silk shirt to prevent any chafing. The armor looks fairly pristine, as if maintained regularly.
Personality: On the outside, Tine seems to be a pushover. This is the side of her that is always very apologetic, very un-opinionated, and very much seemingly uncaring for her own well-being. It’s as if she doesn’t consider herself worthy of being loved. She often tries her best to be non-confrontational and to try to get along with everyone. Underneath this veneer is a frightened, desperate, and lonely individual who is ready to explode every now and then in an outpour of emotions. During these sudden releases of pent-up emotions she could almost be described as crazy or berserk. Normally, others might describe her as reserved, nice, and sort of a wimp. Yes, Tine somehow manages to be un-caring for her own safety yet a wimp at the same time. She is un-confrontational almost to the extreme, but if she decides to (or has her back pushed to the wall and is forced to do it or die) accomplish something she will try to do it almost without regard to her own personal safety. She quietly weeps for acceptance by her peers and ultimately hopes for recognition and love from her parents.
History:
Tine was a happy part of a dark elf family, with both parents being Freiherrs. Loyal to High Graf Schynius, her parents performed important research into weapons and armor, trying to perfect a blend of magic, technology, and wielder integration. The kinds of implements they were researching were not normal pieces of technology that anyone could just pick up and use. The special technologies being developed were designed to work with very special individuals whose innate strength and abilities combine with the weapons and armors to become truly horrific warriors in battle. Only a few rare individuals, officially estimated at less than 1 in 10,000, possess the strange inner powers to interact correctly with the technology. Tine’s parents managed to help develop the first generation of such technology, and training had begun with the experimental weapons and armor.
It turns out that, as Tine grew up, she was discovered not only possesses an extremely keen mind suited for these sort of technological research, much like her parents, but she also possesses the ability to use these experimental technology. Tine attended an academy designed to produce great researchers, and even though she was one of the youngest to get in, she graduates with the best marks. Barely considered an adult at the age of 35, she came out of the academy ready to help her parents design the next generation of weaponry and defensive technology. For the next 4 years, Tine worked with her parents on research and also spent time on a side project for herself. Her father gifted Tine with a pair of bracers infused with strange magical energies and intricate technology beyond Tine’s skill. At least that was what Tine was told. In the hands of the special few that could wield this new arcane technology, it can generate a protective shield around the user. Much to her own surprise, Tine managed to figure out how to use the bracers fairly quickly. Some time later after Tine turned 39, the military held a contest of sorts where young geniuses can show off their work on military technology. It was sort of a science project fair, except more violent in its scope.
Tine entered the contest, planning on showing off the prototype weapon she developed as her side-project. She had hopes that the weapon might be the basis for the next generation of special weapons. Many important officials came to watch the demonstration, as she was the only developer of a special weapon who is also demonstrating it herself. When her turn came, the first part of her demonstration went well. Her prototype showed great destructive potential. However, when she went into the second phase of her demonstration, disaster struck. Perhaps it was a design flaw, or perhaps just plain bad luck. Whatever it was, her prototype malfunctioned and exploded. As she was wearing it at the time, she took the brunt of the force, but luckily the shield she was able to generate took some of the explosion. Her father, a few of the other contestants, and even some higher officials were also seriously injured in the blast.
When Tine awoke in a hospital three months later, she was amazed at how well she survived the blast. There were no permanent physical injuries that clerics could not heal with magic, but her head suffered so much trauma that she lost most of her technical knowledge. She is still very intelligent and could re-learn the skills she lost, but the first thing that came to her mind was to see how her father fared. When she saw her father, she was happy to see that he is apparently mobile and well. Her elation turned into something else entirely when her father looked at her without a shred of recognition, and said, “Who are you?” Tine had responded with, “I’m your daughter…” Tine’s father just shook his head and said, “I never had a daughter. I don’t know who you are. Please leave.”
Tine’s father had suffered a grievous head injury as well, and lost a lot more memories than the technical knowledge Tine lost. Tine’s mother wasn’t hurt, but even she looked upon Tine with a look of coldness and distance, blaming Tine for her husband’s memory loss. One of the other contestants was killed, as was one of the high officials. As punishment, Tine expected to be exiled from Alerar. At that point, Tine almost didn’t mind, given that she was certain to be ostracized everywhere she goes in Aleran society. However, Tine was shocked when she discovered that her mother not only didn’t petition for her to be allowed to stay, but instead actively asked for Tine to be banned from Alerar forever. Crushed, Tine didn’t even wait for the official orders of her exile. She grabbed some basic survival gear, a piece of armor, a crossbow, some technical notes that she and her father had worked on, and the bracers that her father gifted to her, and started on her journey out of Alerar.
She lived mostly by hunting small game, traveling from place to place doing small jobs. Lived is perhaps the wrong word, as Tine’s heart sunk so much she had no enthusiasm for anything. For her, eating and sleeping were merely a means to continue *existing*…although for what she did wasn’t quite sure. Eventually, bits and pieces of her previously lost knowledge started coming back to her, and Tine started thinking to herself that perhaps not all is lost. She could independently regain her lost knowledge, and develop new technologies that surpass all current technology. Only then, she reasoned, does she have a chance at being pardoned…at being accepted by her peers again…and by her parents. Yes, she will re-research the special technology she had been working on, and create weapons and armor so devastating that HER creations will be the deciding factors in winning the dark elves’ wars once and for all!
Skills:
Crossbow – Weapon – Basic – Even though Tine concentrated on research and development, her special talents that allowed her to use this new and strange technology meant she was going to be proficient in combat in some form or another, even if it is just to demonstrate the use of said weapons. Tine had received basic training with the crossbow, because the art of shooting ranged weaponry is use with a lot of the new technology being developed. She can use her crossbow to hunt game fairly competently, but in the rigors and chaos that is combat, she sometimes loses her cool and panics, making her less deadly than she could be in an actual fight.
Hand-to-Hand – Weapon – Beginner – With the technology she was helping develop, even the armor could be a part of the offense, as it can be used to bash and bludgeon others to great effect. As such, Tine knows a bit about hand-to-hand combat and fighting in armor. She still needs a lot of training before she feels comfortable with it however.
PD shield – Innate – Tine was told that this technology is called the PD shield, meaning Perfect Defense shield. She believes that by concentrating on her bracers and holding out one of her hands, she can generate an energy field that can be directional or surrounding her body completely (in a roughly oval shape) that can protect her from attacks. In reality, neither the bracers nor the raising of a hand is needed. The shield is actually a manifestation of the person’s sense of self, her ego if you will. However, Tine believes that she needs the “special” pair of bracers, and belief is powerful. So for the time being, for all intents and purposes, Tine can’t use the PD shield unless she is wearing her bracers. The shield is stronger if she chooses to project it mainly to one direction rather than omnidirectional.
How she can use the shield: It is mainly a defensive tool, although it can be used for offense (Tine hasn’t figured out how yet). In response to an attack, Tine can raise the PD shield to try to deflect the attack. The shield’s force is not appreciably worn down by repeated attacks that are not strong enough to break through the shield, so it is perfect against a succession of smaller attacks. Singular attacks that are strong can break through the shield, and if an attack breaks through the shield, the attack’s strength and damage is not mitigated or lowered in any way. The shield is an all-or-nothing effect. If opponents time it corrects, they can combine several smaller attacks to hit her PD shield at exactly the same time to mimic the power of a stronger blow to try to break through the shield. A good tactic would be to be attacking from opposite directions so Tine has to spread her shield thinner, and attacking at the same time.
Right now, Tine can raise this shield 5 times per day, provided she waits at least 20 minutes between each use. Each time she raises the shield, it lasts for just a few seconds unless she decides to continue concentrating on it, in which case it can last up to 2 minutes at her current strength. If Tine chooses to maintain the shield, the act makes it harder for her to concentrate on her own attack (aiming a crossbow is difficult for example). With enough training and practice in the future, she can learn to compensate and negate the penalty. If she concentrates on nothing BUT the shield, putting all of her energies into it, she cannot attack, but her shield strength is effectively doubled. The shield can also block spells whether they are targeted or area effects. Whether a spell gets through again depends on the strength of the spell. A more powerful mage pouring lots of energy into a spell will most likely cut right through her shield. A beginning mage may not be able to cut through with most of his spells. One exception is spells that directly attack Tine’s mind. The shield does not impede spells that directly target Tine’s psyche, and Tine’s fragile mental state is a ripe target for those who know her.
At her current proficiency and emotional state, her normal shield can only block weak attacks. Against her omnidirectional shield, normal arrows and crossbow bolts may bounce off if not fired by someone who is competent, or by someone who is not very strong. Her directed shield can block most arrows, but a competent archer aiming well can still penetrate a weak point in the shield. A powerful sword slice or an axe chop will always break through right now if she isn’t fully concentrated on defense, and a weak one will glance off. When Tine is blocking a strong attack that gets close to piercing her shield, there is a visible manifestation of the shield. The visual is that of a semi-transparent force field whose color depends on Tine's emotional state. An attack strong enough to break through her shield will also cause a visible manifestation as the shield will show itself breaking into 4 pieces as it parts for the attack. As she gets more confident and her abilities grow, her shield grows automatically with her, becoming stronger. In times of emotional outburst, when she is enraged and cares not for her own safety, the extra emotions augment the shield, making it stronger. However, at that point, she has also lost much of tactical sensibilities and will be attacking semi-blindly. Enemies can specifically target Tine with mind-affecting spells or even just talk her into a suicidal rage if they know what they’re doing, and Tine’s tactics will go to hell.
Tine may attempt to raise her shield more than once in a 20-minute period, but doing so in her current level of strength poses enormous risk to her. Doing so will wrack her with pain and actually cause some internal injuries. Of course, if she is currently enraged, she may not care and fight through the pain anyways.
Weapons and Armor knowledge – Lore – Tine used to be a prodigy at technology relating to integrated weapons and armor technology. The accident has caused her to forgot most of the things she learned, however, and she only retains knowledge on how to make very basic weaponry and armor like normal crossbows, crossbow bolts (she needs wood), and steel breastplates. She seeks to re-discover and re-learn the knowledge she lost, and be able to build and use advanced technological suits of armor and weaponry.
Construction Materials knowledge – Lore – As Tine wishes to build weapons and armor, she has an interest in various construction material of weapons and armor. She remembers the basics about the strengths and weaknesses of the various materials, but will need to acquire samples of rare materials in order to learn about their properties and to forge new technology from them.
Equipment:
Oak crossbow – It’s a simple wooden crossbow. It shoots crossbow bolts and there’s nothing special about it. Tine had made this weapon with her own hands.
Quiver – A quiver for her crossbow bolts. Carries 30 bolts. It is currently full with bolts.
A backpack – This sturdy pack contains some food enough for a week’s travel, a waterskin, a coin pouch, a water-proof bedroll, 50ft of rope and a grappling hook, some eating utensils such as bowls and forks, a small steel knife for skinning animals and for cutting and preparing food, some technical notes her father had written that Tine studies from time to time, trying to make sense of, a cloth hood and a cloak (when not wearing), a few pieces of parchment, ink, an ink pen, a change of clothing (leather pants, cloth shirt), a rain-resistant heavy coat, and a pound of soap.
Set of lamella cuirass armor made out of boiled leather- It covers the entirety of her torso, offering great protection against thrusts and slashes, but only ok defense against crushing blows such as from maces.
Steel Bracers – This is the pair of “special” bracers gifted to her by her father. There’s nothing really special about it except that Tine believes with certainty that she needs these bracers to use her PD Shield.
Leather skirt and thigh-high boots – offer minimal protection. Tine wears them for the looks and for mobility.
