View Full Version : It has a nice ring to it...

Ah, the Bazaar. There was no place in the world like it. Crowds of people crammed into claustrophobic streets, running about, shouting, and haggling. Christopher Knighton avoided the place as much as possible. Today, however, he needed some specialized services.

An enchanter by trade, Christopher was typically capable of weaving spells into objects to suit most of his needs. His skills, however, were very limited, and as such his most recent project to create a very specific sort of magic ring had ground to a halt.

Carrying several rolls of scrawl-covered parchment under his arms, the chef cautiously stepped through the door of the most highly recommended enchanter in the city. It was time to get help from an expert.

"Welcome to the Cockatiel, mister. Anything I can help you with..."

From the shadow of the magic shop came a young, almost childlike voice of the enchantress who owned the tiny establishment. A pair of citrine eyes appeared in the shroud of darkness, followed by the faint click of the shop door closing behind the unwary customer.

"Perhaps... You are looking for an enchantment... Or help in the construction of a certain artifact...?"

A lone candle shed light within the shop, but reached no farther than the bare counter top of the shopkeeper's workspace. The pair of eyes remained far behind, well beyond the reach of the single glowing light.

“Ah, I didn’t see you there,” laughed the chef, not put off at all by his host. He made his way to an empty table and dumped his stack of parchment onto the polished wood, “Where to begin…” He shuffled through the endless arcane formulae.

“Well, I’m a sorcerer through blood and an enchanter by trade, but I am humble enough to admit that my skills can be… limited at times in the latter category—ah, there it is.” Chris drew one of the pages from the rest, reading it over. It included an intricate diagram of a ring, surrounded by line after line of writing. He spoke again, his words flowing quickly off his tongue. “My experiment involved creating this. It’s a ring that gradually collects and stores kinetic energy, such as when you sway your arm by walking, or any other motions for that matter, and then expels it all in mighty blasts of force.” He busied himself with the task of sorting and arranging off of the pages.

“As you can see, I’ve been working for weeks researching and trying to hammer out the formula for this project, and have been testing various forms of the enchantment out on stones and iron. Unfortunately, I lack the materials and, well, arcane skill to complete this undertaking.” He bowed modestly to the enchantress. “Which, of course, is why I am here, humbly asking to commission your aid, as your skill and experience certainly far surpass my own.”

A small giggle could be heard in the dark as the golden orbs flickered in the dark, hovering forward just enough for the owner to enter the light.

The eyes, however, did not align with the human body below.

The feline's citrine eyes stared at Christoph as his owner finally appeared from the darkness. Jumping down from the witch's shoulder, he pranced about the table as if observing the various scrolls of research done by the battle chef.

"I see... An enchanted ring for defeating magical barriers. Why am I not surprised...?"

Agatha raised her eyes to meet those of the chef, dark orbs of piercing black smiling thoughtfully at the hybrid mage as she remembered a certain item she had help constructed earlier that year. However, the power of the ring itself would be of more potential than the barrier it could defeat... And that certain excess of power was of one very slippery slope.

"Perhaps I can help you... But for a rather high price. Stone and iron would be inadequate for your needs, as well as any plain undecorated metal. I'm thinking of... Prevalida... And inset with gems of amethyst for obvious purposes. A high price, sir, of five hundred gold. The enchantment, however, will obviously cost extra. Shall we discuss this over before we begin talking... Business?"

((Let's take this to IM. It'll speed up the process by a lot. :)))

Compared to many things that Chris had seen during his life, a talking cat was hardly noteworthy. Still, he found the creature fascinating as it prowled through his notes and formulae. He forced himself to resist the urge to reach out and pet it.

“Well, it’s more of an enchantment to defeat physical barriers with raw kinetic force,” he explained, pointing out some pertinent lines of scribble. “Magical barriers aren’t usually a problem. Essentially, I need this thing to be able to bring down brick walls when it’s fully charged.”

“For that, I agree that Prevalida is the most efficient material to use, given its natural affinity for the arcane, it is sure to be most capable of containing the greatest amount of stored energy. Five hundred for the ring sounds reasonable enough. The enchantment will be the hard part, no doubt. I will be able to assist, but as I said, I just lack the… finesse to weave the more complicated parts of the enchantment. I would be willing to part with two-hundred more gold to pay for your services.”

Kero looked at Christoph with his bright citrine eyes before giving him a great big yawn. Prancing skillfully through the piles of scrolls, the black cat settled down next to the shelf of herbs and spices. Another black cat joined her friend, staring avidly at the work to be done.

The enchantress, having heard the customer's offer, nodded her head in agreement. The only necessities required would be the ring, the gem and her own weaving of magical containments. A time and place would have to be set to take advantage of the astral influences, which the man would know.

"Fine, then. Seven hundred total. I'll bring the medium with me on the set day and time so we can begin our little... Ritual. You can pay me when the work is done."

Agatha lowered her eyes to study the scrolls of magic, memorizing the necessary processes as well as formulating her own weaves. When the time comes, she would be ready.
