Jade Margery
08-18-08, 12:50 AM
Name: Jade Rosalina Margery
Age: 21
Race: Human, mostly
Hair Color: Dark Brown
Eye Color: Pale, milky green
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 112 lbs
Personality: "Contrary as a cat" her father used to say, although contrary as a pig may be more accurate if less alliterative. The best way to get Jade to do something is to tell her to do the opposite.
Appearance: Jade is a thin, gangly young woman, all angles and edges, like a marionette in shape and movement. Her face is rounder than one might expect; full, pouting cheeks with a sharp chin and a pointed nose just a little too long. She has large eyes the color of jade, after which her parents creatively named her, swarthy, olive skin and curly dark brown hair which is long and often braided.
History: Jade's father was a young nobleman, while her mother was a member of a traveling gypsy circus who was rumored (and rightly so) to have a little fairy blood in her. Theirs was the sort of romance about which stories are written and then ended with 'happily-ever-afters' before the listener is reminded of all the things that can go wrong in life once the passion burns out.
To cut a long story short, Jade's mother, Rosalina, did not find the married life to her liking at all. Not two years after Jade was born, she left one morning for a walk and never returned, leaving her daughter in her father's care. Whether she believed it would be a better life for Jade or merely didn't want to have to support a toddler on the road is uncertain.
Jade's father, one Marcus Margery, cared deeply for his young child and tried to find the best nurses and servants to raise her. Few of them kept the job long. To say she was a terror would be like calling an elder dragon a grass snake. She got into absolutely everything and needed at least three baths a day just to keep her presentable. Furthermore, she could not be stopped from getting into trouble by any means. Locked doors, high shelves, and bodily restraints were no match for her.
When she was nine she was sent to an academy for young ladies, known for its strict discipline and the high quality of its graduates as wives and gentlewomen. Jade quickly learned that she had no desire to be either and continued to cause a lot of trouble for everyone, though now she was dealt harsh punishments instead of a slap on the wrist.
It was during one such punishment, as she was scouring a huge cauldron in the kitchens after a good thrashing, that Jade fainted for the first time. At first her instructors thought she was just playing faint to escape punishments, but as the fainting spells increased with her age, they suspected something might be wrong. When trained healers examined the girl, they found that her heart was weak and too small; any strenuous activity exhausted her.
After her condition was discovered she was treated like a porcelain doll and kept confined to her room most of the time, allegedly studying, which to Jade was worse than any punitive measure they could have brought down on her.
Jade decided to play along for a couple months before requesting a walk around the grounds 'for some air', at which point she escaped over the wall and into the countryside. She was then fifteen.
Jade has kept in loose contact with her father since then, but otherwise makes her own way. She has picked up a lot of odd skills and bits of knowledge but excels at nothing except causing trouble.
Skills:
Lock Picking (Average): Jade can open cheap and simple locks, although locks of any decent craftsmanship are beyond her abilities.
Sneaking (Average): Jade is quite light on her feet and good at sneaking around and hiding after many years of practice.
Dagger Fighting (Below Average): Although she avoids conflict as much as she can, occasionally a situation demands that she defend herself. Jade's no killer, but she's not above distributing a couple stabs to the gut.
Magic, Illusion (Below Average): Jade knows a little about how to manipulate others senses. She's not good enough to turn herself invisible, but can conjure small illusions OR noises out of thin air about three times a day, usually to provide her with a distraction.
Equipment:
Clothing: Brown blouse, dark green vest, brown skirt, soft leather shoes, traveling sack
2 small iron daggers (4 inch blades)
Impromptu Thieves Tools (mostly junk she collected over the years such as oddly twisted bits of metal and thin wooden sticks)
A deck of cards
Special, Luck: This is not really an ability, but more of a racial characteristic. Jade is and has always been unnaturally lucky, probably due to her long forgotten fairy ancestor. The advantage is very slight. For instance, if she flipped a coin for heads, she might have a 60/40 chance of winning instead of 50/50, maybe. It is very random. Needless to say, she does well at cards.
Special, Weak Heart: Due most likely to that same ancestor, Jade's heart is a bit too small for her body. Continued physical exertion tires her quickly, and if she is pushed too hard she can get dizzy or even pass out. She exercises every day to strengthen her heart, but she will never be as capable of some activities as others are.
(Note: These are mostly for roleplaying intrigue and have little effect on combat or player/player interactions)
Familiars: Craven the Crow--the first to take flight at the least sign of trouble, Craven is next to useless as far as pets go. Jade has been trying to teach him to talk, with no success (she's not even sure crows can talk). Jade is having a bit more success teaching Craven to pick up shiny objects, but he rarely brings her anything except trash.
