Have you ever wondered how wireless works? Why is an antenna needed? How is the signal carried?

Well, the antenna is usually just a wire or a bundle of wires that simply amplify the receiver's ability to detect the signal. The signal is carried via radio waves that carry information by altering the waves amplitudes at a specific frequency. But imagine what would happen if you lost that antenna. What would you do to fix it quickly and easily? A wire (or a straightened paper clip) might work for a cell phone, though it might fry it, I haven't tried. But what about a computer? Well, if you somehow lose or break your antenna, try a spoon. Yes, that's right, a spoon. I am actually sending this post via wireless connection with a spoon as my antenna. I didn't think it would work...I figured it might just fry my computer, but I tried it and it worked.

Just a little heads up, though... DON"T TRY THIS IF YOUR WIRELESS CARD IS BUILT INTO YOUR MOTHERBOARD!!!(you shouldn't be having problems anyway....-_-) Only use it with wireless adapters that connect to your mother board or connect with USB. Results are not guaranteed because a spoon would be difficult to a)attach to the adapter and b) set in a way that it can receive the signal.

I saw an article in a magazine one time about using a wok (one of those curved cooking pans) to receive wireless signals better. Apparently it works... they could get signals much further away than normal, because of their parabolic shape.
