Does anyone known how to work Windows Vista? I had a file that was... oh about 9 pages long, the judgment for Letho's FFA. I was 68 posts into the 75, and last night my laptop decided to turn itself off somehow after I went to sleep and put it on hibernate.

Now, normally, on my other laptop at least, that just means that I can search through the automatically saved documents and pull up the last incarnation of the document.

However, I don't know how to do that on Vista. And the file that it says it automatically saves for recovery too is empty...

Anyone know? Or do I have to start the judgment all over?

Buh. o.O

I have Vista on my laptop and when it turns itself off, when I reboot it, it just brings up all the documents and pages that were on it before it died.

Did you try doing a full search for the file? Is it not where you normally saved it? Try bringing up the old file, maybe it just automatically saved it there and shut the program down.

The computer won't even find the original file that I saved it as. And when I go to where it says it's supposedly auto-saving it to there is nothing there, the file is empty. I tried to search, but the search feature on Vista is goofy at best. There isn't just a straight 'search' tab to click in the start menu.

Right click on your taskbar and select properties. Under the "Start Menu" tab you can select to set the Vista start menu back to "Classic Start Menu". The Classic one has the Search function right in the Start Menu.

Also, if you start typing something in the search bar in the Vista start menu, a link should appear just above there that says "Search Everywhere". Clicking this brings up a list of all the indexed locations that match your search. Just enter the first letter of whatever you saved the files as (for example I just typed "A" into the search bar) and it should bring you a nice big list of everything with that letter in the file name.

Hopefully that helps you find what you are looking for.

Nothing... at all. It comes up with the search feature, with the little toolbar that I put in .asd and .tmp to find auto-recovered as well as temp files. Apparently this laptop has not autorecovered or created temp files for ANY document ever typed on it. Though the settings say that it was set to save/AR every 10 minutes...

I just sent a nasty message to Microsoft, since I hate them now very much, and I'll just re-write the entire thing.

BTW the regular Vista start menu has this too. The little search bar is right above the button itself. Just FYI.

As for your files Task, usually if you had something open in Word when your computer shuts off, the next time you open word it will have it there. Other than that I can't help you. Sorry.

No worries. Thank you all for the help. I went ahead and re-wrote it, have it finished and will be posting it in a few mins.
