Name: Kerrigan Muldoon
Birth Name: Kerrigan Josephine Muldoon
Age: 26
Race: Human
Sex: Female
Hair Colour: Light brown
Eye Colour: Soft green, turning brown at the edges
Height: 1,77 meter
Weight: 62 kg
Occupation:
Freelance performer/illusionist and fortune teller.
She travels from place to place, sometimes as a performer in her one-woman show and other times as a fortune teller, trading visions of the future for money.
Personality:
Kerrigan has a somewhat unfathomable character, able to change between extremes within moments. Most of the time she lives the act of the successful, charming and sensual performer. At such times she has a seemingly permanent honest smile and twinkling eyes, talking and laughing with any nice stranger she met and occasionally flirting with handsome men. During such moods she is generous, loving, caring and honest.
However as soon as things get a little more serious, like when she runs out of money, is tired, becomes too close with someone or for a seemingly random reason, she changes. First a lovable and attractive woman, she takes less then a moment turn into a real bitch. When in such a mood, she has a peculiar and much practiced quality to mix half facts, biases truths and stone cold lies all in one sentence. Used to performing and acting, she has no problem to act, lie and cheat in real life as well. She sees no reason to tell the truth if another version of the truth might be more useful, or just more pleasurable, at that moment.
But later on, mostly when she has achieved her goal(s), she turns back into that lovely young women with her generous smile.
Both because of her own tendency to lie and because of her awkward relation with Jack, her magical deck of cards, she has difficulty trusting people and to see the positive side of things unless she is in a great mood. Jack, who has an even more whimsical personality, communicates with her mainly through auditory and visual hallucinations. This has made her very alert on whether she hears and sees is reality or the production of her freakish familiar.
Appearance:
Usually she wears her light brown hair, which reaches down to her elbows, loose or bound together in a simple ponytail. Her soft brown skin slightly blushes around her cheeks, making her look younger then her calendar age. She is tender and light, but her female features are clearly visible.
Her most beautiful features are her hands, which are delicate and soft, as well as fast and accurate. Being the most important tool for her work her hands are well trained and move with a certain mysterious grace.
Skills:
Quick Handed: Kerrigan is skilled and quick with cards and to lesser extend with objects of similar size and weight, like small books, wallets and small knifes/daggers. She can shuffle cards in extraordinary ways with ease and rarely makes mistakes. When dealing her own set of cards, Jack (see ‘Familiar’), she only makes mistakes when Jack wants her too.
Magic Cards: She has magical control over her own cards, and to lesser extend over other cards or objects of similar size and weight, like paper and small books or wallets. There is quite some difference between what she can do with general cards and her own deck. These are the basic magical spells which she can perform with her own deck (when Jack cooperates):
Spontaneous combustion (only in close proximity of her hands, comparable with igniting a match)
Re-locate (up to 10 meter)
Transmute (back and forth into a metal like material, able to make wounds comparable to a dagger of the same size)
Levitate (her cards – not herself – a few meter, multiple cards at once result in less levitation time)
With any other card and objects of similar size and weight (paper, small books, light wallets, watches, etc she can do no more then the following:
Disappear and Appear (only in close proximity of her hands, depending on the size an item can be gone for up to 5 sec)
Re-locate (only from one hand to her other, or to something like her pocket)
Throw a card or knife at moderate speed and with below average accuracy to a target, inflicting a cut wound or remain pierced in a (wooden) wall.
Fortune Telling: a client can ask a certain question about a specific case (examples: whom should I marry, when will I die, how will I get rich) which Kerrigan will then try to answer. Through intensive concentration and careful shuffling of the deck, Kerrigan will deal the cards in any fashion, order and style which seems appropriate for that moment. During the session or afterwards, Jack and Kerrigan both act as a channel to interpret the cards in order to explain the past, present or the future. At this level she will only get a hint or at most a short glance of the answer, if anything at all.
Equipment:
Her deck of tarot cards consisting of about 80 cards. Whenever a card is destroyed, missing or separated over a long distance it automatically replenishes or returns to the other cards. Each card has a drawing (or rune, symbol) which represents certain emotions, beings, acts or expression. It has its own personality, called Jack. See ‘Familiar’ for more information.
Basic set of clothes, also containing a long, dark purple robe usually used when performing or travelling.
Four basic silver throwing knifes.
Diary, written in code.
The book “Treatise on Tarot”, written in the same code as her diary
History:
Born in a rich family, Kerrigan had not much to worry about in her youth. That changed soon after she turned 9 years old. The marriage of her parents had never been one of love but things had been smooth so far, until her father’s affair was discovered. Arguments and fights became an every day habit and Kerrigan was stuck right in the middle of it. After a while her parents stopped arguing and just ignored each other, which was somewhat better. The silent struggle between her parents climaxed into a war when her father accused her mother of not having been faithful to him, and that Kerrigan was not his child.
Though they stayed together for the sake of reputation and practical matters, it was not the most pleasant place for a child to be. While Kerrigan bonded closely with her mother she never really attached to her father, which has probably affected her view on men. While she loved her mother she wanted to move away from her parents place and become independent as soon as possible. At the age of 21 she took a wad of money from her father, hugged and kissed her mother goodbye and took off into the big wide world.
Being somewhat of a spoiled and naïve child she had a hard time coming by in the harsh society. But when she ran out of money she got into real troubles. Stranded in city filled with all forms of lowlife, the only way for a woman like her to make money was by prostitution. Thanks to her stubbornness, will and a lot of luck she barely managed to escape that destiny. A scout for a local night club noticed her soft skin and well developed manners. Grateful for the opportunity, Kerrigan accepted his offer to work as a performer in his shows. While she usually wasn’t wearing a lot of clothes she only had to dance and work as an assistance during tricks and illusions, which was by far better then having to prostitute herself. Receiving training and learning the ins and outs of the show business she found her profession and future.
While Kerrigan slowly raised in skill and fame a rivalling show decided to use force to ruin them. After the last show a group of hired thugs rampaged through the dress rooms and set the building on fire. As if she was fortune’s favourite she managed to slip by the gang unnoticed and escape through the private room of the best performer on the show, who was probably already dead by that time. Remembering the rumours about him owning a magical cards she grabbed the first deck of cards she could find and escape through an window.
She then fled from town to town in search of professional show in which she could perform. The first days she noticed nothing in particular about the deck of tarot cards, but then she started to hear and see things which weren’t actually there. It didn’t took long until the magical cards introduced itself to her. It said it was actually a ‘he’ called Jack and that he was trapped inside the cards. He explained that he needed an user to be able to do anything, but that he possessed great powers only waiting to be untapped by someone like her. Both curious and longing for those promised powers, Kerrigan decided to make a pact with Jack. She would use his cards to channel his powers giving him some sort of meaning to his existence while Kerrigan naturally profited from her dramatically increased powers. No longer needing the protection and guidance offered by professional shows she roamed the country, performing on her own whenever she was in need for money.
Her pact with Jack would affect her life and personality more then she estimated beforehand. Jack was used to communicate with her through auditory and visual hallucinations, confusing her about reality and illusion. The cards were unpredictable and powerful, amplifying Kerrigan’s already unstable personality. While gaining an ever stronger will and charisma, she also suffered from sudden mood swings, bad concentration and constantly changing interests. However, over the years she has learned to hide the effects of Jacks quirks and tricks and is usually able to control herself when she feels upcoming mood swings.
Familiar:
Her deck of tarot cards, named Jack, could be considered her familiar as it is actually alive and has its own personality and will. It’s true nature is unknown but one could consider ‘it’ to be a ghost or elemental residing in the cards. According to Jack he has been imprisoned in the cards by his own mother, who was a witch of sorts. The destruction of a card does in no way harm Jack and the destroyed card will always come back one way or another. It is unknown what will happen when all cards will be destroyed simultaneously.
Jack can communicate with other beings through telepathy but rarely speaks with anyone else then Kerrigan, with whom he has a special bond. He can create auditory and visual hallucinations only visible to Kerrigan and sometimes he cheats her other senses as well. While she is usually able to identify reality from Jack’s tricks she occasionally does have trouble separating them, which is one reason why Kerrigan is so suspicious and sometimes near schizophrenia.
While powerful, Jack can only act through the cards and needs an user to take full use of its powers. Jack and Kerrigan have a mutual agreement of which they both benefit, for now at least. Without a caster like Kerrigan, Jack can not untap his powers, and she hasn’t got many powers if she can’t use Jack’s. While taking use of each other they do not trust each other for one bit.
