View Full Version : Updating: all new/updated skills must be backup by threads?

I've only got this one short and simple question.

When you have enough EXP and decide to update your character, are you only allowed to make changes to your profile which can be backed up by threads? I.e.: I could only update spell A to A+ if I have actually used spell A some times in a thread or two? Or, could I update spell A without having it used extensively in a thread, but would otherwise not be illogic to update?

While it's great to say "I learned such skill in this thread" so that the skill is more integral to the character, it's not technically necessary so long as the profile on the whole doesn't set alarm bells ringing in the RoG mod's head.

Thanks for your quick reply. I figured that would be the most logical method, especially as it fits in perfectly with the general idea of this site. However, I got confused by Taskmienster saying this: That's not a familiar, that's an ability. Where did you get it? You are supposed to link new abilities earned in quests. (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=18686)

Anyhow, I pretty much know what I wanted to know, so thanks again.

That's one of the ones that set off alarm bells. Particularly powerful totally new abilities need to be earned in quests. However, if you'll look at my level 1 profile, here (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=16490), you'll see that I added several things brand new...and the EXP I got to land me at L1 was from a reincarnation. I hadn't even written anything on Alydia yet.

Also, you'll notice that the character being updated with the new ability in your link is less than halfway to leveling up. Mid-level updates when new skills are being added MUST have validation for the skills.

This was a mid-level update for a "familiar" that wasn't actually a familiar, it was a new ability. Had he said something like... I have a small fox that runs around and helps me out, that would be an example of a familiar. Or even an NPC that follows him around could technically be considered one.

What was being added was an ability, a type of spell, that wasn't in his profile and also was not earned in a quest. You can't update mid-level abilities unless you've earned them as a spoil in a thread, most of the time I'd prefer that the person wait till they gain a level before trying to update a skill or add a new one anyway. That way they don't have an update after every thread, and when they hit the next level get to add new or update old ones too. That's just not fair.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, that clarifies it :).

On a side note, it appears the link "Vote for Us at the Die Roller's Top 100!" in the small user control panel at the top of the main forum index is broken. It links to the following:

Site: USS New Hampshire - Engineering Expertise
The New Hampshire is a nova refit vessel in the Star Trek sim group Bravo Fleet. It's assigned to Task group 21, and is peculiar. It's the Starfleet Corps of Engineering vessel for the group. If you feel like having a fun star trek sim, which relies on engineering skills, join the NH.
Unless I somehow failed to spot any Borg, I'm pretty sure that ain't exactly a correct description ;).

I'm unable to find the correct link though, so I can't help you out with that.

EDIT: The shortcut waaay below on the main page which allows you to directly vote for (hopefully) this site appears to work though.

The only ability my character ever actually learned through a thread was Makaido, his level 1 magic attack. He picked it up through the powergroup he was in at the time. It pretty much opened him up to knowing how to use magic and each skill developed has been his own since then.

I personally never had my character learn the ability before the level up, because I could never tell when I was going to level and didn't want him to actually use a skill he hadn't earned. At each level up I would give him something I thought would improve it into his abilities and then introduced it in a thread or just assumed it was part of his natural progression as a character.

This also helps because it'll save you from being disappointed if the ability was never approved. Just my two cents.
