View Full Version : Where is the line?

Having shown my character history (click my profile link to view it) to a couple of people, I was intrigued by the responses I got. One person said 'Wow. Your writing has improved loads' (He's known me for a long time, and my writing used to be a hell of a lot worse than it is now. And that is saying something.) Another said 'WTF have you done?' and proceeded to rant about the explicit content.

Thus, my question is: Where is the line between acceptable and disturbing?

Also, did I take it too far in my history? My future threads will not be as explicit but I am intrigued to know peoples' thoughts on the matter.

I wouldn't worry about it too much to be honest. Some people are more offended by that sort of thing than others and yes, you did go into a bit more detail than what you normally see around these parts regarding sex but there's been worse. In fact there's been much worse and several prominent members, myself included (on my grim137 account) have written worse and the only one's I've seen catch major flak for going over the line was Lorenor and Raeylse (I know I spelled that wrong but you all know who I'm talking about), so ultimately I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just be careful in threads because depending on the judge, you might lose points if you get that graphic again.

As for the line where the line is, its hard to say. Different people have different sensibilities and some are more easily offended than others. I personally have no problems with graphic descriptions of sex, violence, sexual violence, violent sex, or whatever but others do. Like I said, if you step way over the line, where ever the hell that said line is now (it fluctuates depending on the community and who's in charge among others factors) you'll know it. Don't worry about it and just write whatever it is you want to write.

There is no line.
At least, with me.
What can I say? I have a character who rapes women and men both, so I'm a bit broad minded.
But in general, as long as you put XPLISET CONTENTZ MWAHAHAHA at the beginning of your threads, you should be good. Yes, we have 13, 14 year olds running around here, but most of Althanas's population is made up of mature (or not so mature) young adults and such. In fact, kinky, creative sexual violence might boost your score, if well written. In any case, don't worry about it too much.

Like Potter Stewart said when trying to define obscenity, "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced... But I know it when I see it..."

Personally I hate reading that kind of stuff, but it's all really a matter of personal judgment and opinion.

There is actually a line. Three words:

Cum Licking Faerie.

Cum Licking Faerie.
I repeat: there is no line.
Good try though.

You can repeat, but you obviously weren't here for it when it happened. Talk to some of the older mods, because I'm not kidding.

Wasn't she pre-pubescent, too? It was before my time, but I heard enough about it to be completely grossed out.

All right, all right. Correction. Four words:

Pre-pubescent Cum Licking Faerie.

Saxon's got a point. While there were a few of us who didn't care when that incident happened the vast majority did but then again as a whole Althanas in general seems to be a bit more open minded or lenient towards mature content than it once was. Just be careful. As a general rule of thumb, use some common sense and don't over do it too much, you won't get in trouble for writing a sex scene but having a familiar that drinks your cum to increase its strength might offend some people.

Guess not. o_o Jeez, and here I thought you were kidding.
Alright, alright; we've found the line.
I feel like taking a shower now.

I'm pretty comfortable when it comes to people talking about real sexual encounters, so roleplaying sexual encounters is also not a problem for me, but I am a little edgy to do with sexual violence, but not violent sex. That's a little wierdly put so i'll explain :P; i'm okay with people describing consensual sex that's on the rough side, but i'm not a fan of people roleplaying rape, or similar, especially graphically, since i've known two different rape victims it's not something that i can just regard as 'stuff on the internet', or whatever. But I know that's my own personal opinions from my personal experiences so I don't expect everybody else to feel the same way.

Explicit Material? Lines?

Show me where they are and I shall cut the line.

It's all a matter of taste. My character has made people cringe, and made people say "Okay, nothing new." It's all in the matter of personal flavor.

I will post what I must to maintain the original vision, and frequently disgust and disturb myself with what I have planned. I will at least offer the courtesy of a warning in any such posts, or threads.

There is a line!

In the past, we've accepted a very PG-13 rating regarding sex. That said, however, R rated and even NC-17 threads are generally allowed if the player follows a few guidelines. First, at the start of the thread the players should give an ACW (adult content warning). Second, the players shouldn't openly publicize or advertise the explicit content (people rarely read other's threads unless asked). If you do those things, I doubt anyone will care. The moderators certainly won't come down on you. However, if something really is in poor taste (the raping of a child with a prehensile member, for example), whether the writer created it in good faith, is typically frowned upon.

We really haven't had an issue with this despite the fact we have young kids writing on the site. Maybe you folks are just more mature than your tween counterparts (yeah right!).

I for one do have a line. If you want to write that type of stuff, sure go ahead. But I just do not want to read it. That's why I greatly appreciate an adult content warning at the beginning of a thread (or character description, for that matter) so I know I'll want to skip it.

When you have such explicit material in your character description I certainly will not judge you, but I probably won't roleplay with you either :) (unless their won't be any sexual content in the story).

You might ask: why? Well, first of all I want to be sure you understand this is just me personally; if others want to read/write that fine, I just don't. The main reason I refure to read/write explicit material is that I want to connect sexuality only with intimicy and romance with my girlfriend, in private. Hence adult content in a public forum with unknown participators just for fun is a not done for me.

But hey, that's just me ;).

You can write an explicit scene with explicit language without crossing the line, regardless of what your character is doing. There is a difference between a vile scene that horrifies a reader, and using words and language in a tactless way to give a totally different vibe. It should not be glorified outside of the character's perspective, for instance.

Are there any Cum Licking Faerie examples still around? Like the stories of the player that had that character?
