To continue with ones future sometimes one must look to the past for answers. To begin on the path to ones future, one must first set in place a past.

Things had grown somewhat dull for the boy of seventeen. The last few years had been spent researching, a process that proved a lot less fruitful then he had hoped. Upon finding a simple text, he had increased upon his knowledge but lacked the ability to use it: as of yet. Still, knowledge alone would not be enough to continue traversing the world of Althanas, with its many dangers and perils. His only means of defense were what little he could do with increasing the output of his own body, a giant tortoise who acted as transport and body guard, and a whip formed of his own spirit through a crystal medium belonging to a set he had yet to unlock. His skill with the weapon was none existent. His overall combat ability was lacking to say the least. As for the tortoise, Genbu would not always be able to save his hide.

These were harsh times, and Dino had little to his name. His only belonging consisted of an annoying tome which usefulness did not keep the biologist from dreams of setting it ablaze. He was lucky enough to not take this course of action this night. The Tome of Knowledge as it had been renamed by Dino in its own disgust toward its former title was a quite reliable alarm system. While Dino slept quietly the Tome patrolled the manor in its boredom, doing whatever it was floating books did in their spare time, and happened to come across a number of intruders. It hurried back to the study, awaking Dino by slamming into the sleeping youth and informed him of the situation. As his luck would have it, a stick situation would of course arise his first night staying in this damned estate.

Calling the manor an eye sore could have been taken as a compliment. Long since forsaken by its original owner, it had become infested by all manner of pest years ago as a slightly deranged alchemist practiced his craft here. Many parts of the building had long since become dangerous to even explore much less occupy. The pest problem was not so much a burden as it had once been, though the rats were noticeably larger than they had once been, fewer creatures preyed upon them than in past years. It had been three years since Dino had last visited this place but it was hard to forget where you began your life’s work. For nearly a year this manor, though in slightly better condition, had been his home.

Things had remained as he left them for the most part, though the lake had broken through into the east wing. Dino became almost hysterical upon finding this as he had bugged his master about an indoor pool so he and Genbu could enjoy a light swim without worry of Gil’bron. His master would then smile at the thought of the boy and his then small pet being devoured, for minutes even, before replying with a stern no, and returning to his work. The man was a drunkard and a bit of an ass, but even he did not deserve the fate he received. A few blood stains still remained from the mess that he left behind.
History aside, Dino had more important matters to attend to.

-I saw two of them, but I am almost positive there are more from the way they spoke- The books text appeared and faded in a form Dino had grown accustomed to reading on the fly. The boy ran from the study, the fire places warm glow escaping from the room as the doors bashed against the walls behind him. He was on the second floor, rushing to the staircase that would lead blow where the tome had first seen the intruders. Under normal conditions Dino would not bother making such a fuss about adventurers or even thieves coming along as he held interest in anything here, but the fact that someone was searching this place made him uneasy, especially since Genbu had not alarmed him of people in the area. The tortoise had slept the day away and it was unlike him to slouch about. Furthermore there were wards set in place to protect against unwanted guests. Dino had learned to bypass these with a simple command, but he had a feeling these intruders had done so by other means.

Coming to the staircase he was just as shocked to see the two intruders as they were of him or at least it would seem, the moons glow being the only lighting available. “Evening mates, now mind if I ask what your business here might be?” He broke the silence but had a feeling these two were not as interested in small talk, what with one pulling a set of daggers from his side. “Oy, I guess a round of ale is out of the question then?” He sighed as the armed assailant came at him. He dodged the first strike, a combination straight punch for his face with the right arm, the blade used as an extension. Moving to his left was Dino’s only option as the attacker was already in the process of swinging his left arm at the boy’s belly. Each blade missed, his mantle defending against the strike at his torso while he could hear the wind breaking just past his ear from the first. “Little help here!” Dino shouted as the tome sprang into action, flying into to the man’s face a loud smack. Dino followed up with a kick to the outer knee bringing him down and a tightened fist to his opponent’s chest. There was no time to follow with his attack as the second intruder decided to join in on the brawl.

He was sent through a wall, taking a strong kick to the face before landing on his back covered in debris. “Much thanks on the assist.” One of the assailants said, he figured the one holding the blades. “Still looking for a round o’ ale mate?” The same voice said with a laugh Dino found a bit snobbish. He pushed a few pieces of wood off of his person and attempted to get up but was forced back down by powerful leg firmly set upon his chest. “Looks like you boy’s found something?” A feminine voice asked from the hallway. Coming out of his daze, Dino looked to see the first two attackers bathed in moonlight. On top of him stood a large man, somewhere over six feet though from this angle it was hard to tell, as for his features they were hidden under a black leather like mask though the substance seemed much thinner and formed quite well across his face, though not well enough to allow for detailed description, at least in this lighting. His outfit consisted of the same material it seemed, though his fore arms, shins and chest were exceptionally guarded by a thin plate of dark metal. The knife wielder was dressed similar to the first though his lower garments were more common wear and he bore not mask. His face was youthful, looking to be about the same age as Dino though his skin was much farer in tone. There were a few scars under his chin that looked as if they were fresh, and one across his right eye that one would guess reached further up his brow but would remain a mystery as long as he continued to wear the deep red headband that brought more attention to his lighter right hair.

“Put those things down Ollin before you hurt yourself.” The female voice scolded the unmasked one whose expression quickly shifted to that similar of a small child who had just been caught doing something they knew they had no business doing. “So what did you find this time Daruin?” He could hear the new addition to the group passing through the hole that he had created in the wall, obviously watching their step as they leaped around the broken wood. The name sounded awfully familiar. Dino began to lift his head up to look at this newcomer but the one he assumed to be Daruin applied more pressure to his chest keeping him pinned to the floor. “Hmm, he’s not as cute as the other one we found but maybe he knows where we can find what we are looking for.” The girl said, still out of sight. “Mom and the others are waiting outside with that turtle thing, so bring him out there. I’ll meet you once I’m done looking over things here.” The girl began to exit the room, but stopped momentarily before tossing something to Ollin. He caught it with one hand, returning both knives back to the sheaths on his thighs as he now held the Tome of Knowledge in his possession.

“Worthless piece of scrap.” Dino moaned under his breath as Daruin lifted his foot. In one fluid motion the man brought his leg back, foot rolling off Dino’s chest and flipping him off his back and with a simple kick launched the boy four feet off the ground. Even through the mantles plating, he could feel pressure being applied to numerous parts of his body while airborne before he was grabbed by the back of his collar and lifted onto Daruin’s shoulder. The will to break from his captures hold was present but the ability to do so was out of his reach. A surge of something he could not be sure of ran through his body in constant intervals, negating any attempt and controlling his own bodily functions. Whatever Daruin had done, it had effectively immobilized Dino, while severely impairing his senses. His ability to perceive his surroundings was also greatly altered, as within seconds it seemed they had exited the manor and was thrown next to a roaring lakeside fire.

"It is a pleasure to meet you Dusk Vera." The woman said as she took the child’s hand in her own. She was nothing short of beautiful. Her skin held a dark tint to it nowhere near as shaded as his though, somewhere around a rich olive maybe? Her layered, towheaded hair was cut shoulder short aside from a thick braid that fell down to hip on the right side. The rest almost made the woman seem just as feral as the boy, naturally flowing to her back as if spiked as such at the crown and obviously left unkempt for some time. This did not hamper her looks in the slightest and possibly exerted her beauty to the fullest as her soft skin and full lips were touched by the light of the first quarter moon. She looked to be in her twenties.

Dusk was delighted to have gained the aid of such kind people. As usual Dusk’s poor sense of direction had landed him in yet another unknown place without the slightest of clues as to where he was headed or how he had gotten here. He really needed to learn how to pay attention to his surroundings and not walk around aimlessly. He was lucky enough to run into this group or travelers, as was also usual for the boy, and was invited to join them. It seemed they were in search of an item and were currently on a mission to retrieve said object for their employer.

The woman sitting across from him was the leader of the group, named Ariuna. She along with Dusk and another sat within the small wagon along with most of the groups supplies. There were four others with them: a large masked man named Daruin was driving the wagon, Ariuna’s daughter Lorien who had gone ahead a few hours before, a red haired boy named Ollin who acted as if he were the same age as Dusk, or so Lorien had stated, and Khuoa a moon imp as he called himself who sat atop the wagon.

“This job shouldn’t take too long.” Ariuna smiled to the boy sitting across from her. Ollin to her right, Dusks left, was obviously trying to sneak a swallow from a small flask, shifting to the woman’s blind spot as the two spoke amongst each other. Dusk watched in amazement as the woman sent her hand out while not even averting her sight as a small chain extended from her sleeve and wrapped itself around the container. Surprised by Ariuna’s movements Ollin dropped the flask, his shocked look quickly turning to one of agitation as the woman tugged on the chain lightly, bringing the flask to her hand and returning the chain to it hiding place. “Sorry Ollin, but this drink is not meant for brats.” She continued to smirk, taking a long drink and then capping the flask before tossing it above her.

Khuoa came into the wagon, holding on to the outer edge with one hand as he grabbed the flask with a tail. The moon imp stood equal to Dusk in height, though it was much thinner than the child ever hoped he would be. His features were generally that of a humans’, a pair of leathery red wings adorned on his back, long pointed ears that fell behind his head along with his white hair and a set of three tails, each different than the other in various ways.

The imp took a sip before speaking in a language Dusk did not recognize, though Ollin seemed just as curious to what the creature had said, turning his attention to Ariuna. “Alright Khuoa, go set up camp. Ollin, you and Daruin head to the manor and see what you can find.” The carriage came to a halt as Ariuna spoke, grabbing the flask as Khuoa dropped it back to her before disappearing back into the night. Aruina patted Dusk on the head before jumping out of the wagon.

“Are you not a lucky lad? Few people get to see members of the assassin’s guild at work and live to tell about it.” Aruina continued with her smile as she cart-wheeled toward Khuoa. Dusk looked past the two who spoke amongst each other in very different languages, looking out to the large lake. Assassins were people who were paid to kill, but Aruina had told him that they were in search for an item. Dusk believed he could trust her word, but he was curious as to why Assassins would be doing such work. Was this not a job for a thief? And what exactly was a guild any way?

He would make sure to ask these questions later. Khuoa performed some magical spell, creating a large pillar of fire on the side of the lake. Dusk walked toward the fire, feeling its warm glow pierce through the night air. Khuoa and Ariuna continued to speak, passing the flask about until it was empty when the imp simply pulled another out. Ollin and Daruin had disappeared while Dusk was not looking, further proving the fact that he needed to pay much more attention to his surroundings. The three waited by the fire for a short time before Daruin and Ollin returned. Ollin unbound the horse that had been pulling the wagon and lead it to the water as Daruin appeared carrying someone Dusk did not recognize on his shoulder. The person was tossed in front of the fire as Daruin looked to Ariuna, his expression uncertain through that mask of his.

“Lorien is continuing the search, but we found this bastard skulking around, along with his little toy.” Ollin held up a small book, moving as if he were about to toss it in the flames but decided against it at the last second. “Think we can sell it?” He tossed the book to Ariuna but in mid flight it suddenly stopped and flew next to the individual Daruin had carried with him. Dusk wondered if the world would ever stop surprising him. The book pushed against the boy a few times, Khuoa attempting to catch but it swiftly dodged the imps grasp.

The Crimson Ace came alive, both bandages flying from Dusk’s back and wrapping around the book. “Gotcha!” He shouted in excitement as he pulled the book closer to him and held it in his own arms. “Good job Dusk. You know, you remind me a lot of Dino here when he was younger.” Ariuna wiped a bit of the contents form the flask off her chin with her thumb before stepping over to the person Daruin had brought. She grabbed his cloak, picking him up with a single hand and held the flask up to his mouth. “Been a while brat, care for a drink?” She asked, not once letting her expression change from anything other than a smile.

The stench was overwhelming, enough in fact to bring all six of his senses rushing back under his control, highly more enhanced than before. Like some sort of psychedelic drug, whatever had been in the flask enhanced the world around him, making it much more than he would have normally perceived, or liked to at the moment. His sense of smell was better than even when he used the natural chemicals in his body to increase its ability, though the scent from whatever concoction was held in the flask over powered all but the smell of burning wood which tickled his nose. Hearing and touch were the greatest of all, being able to feel the pounding of each individuals heart beats as if he were within their body and hear the slightest movements of their joints. His sight was not so much enhanced as it was improved, everything coming in clearer than he could ever remember seeing and taking in everything, even things that seemed as if they were out of his line of sight. Taste was greater at first, but with only his own saliva settled in his mouth, it soon became old. Even his spiritual sense was tweaked a bit, as he could feel each of these people’s auras as if they were a physical object. The child among them intrigued him the most with this sense as his aura seemed to fluctuate much more than Dino had ever seen in any being before.

"Well you going to say something or keep on with that stupid face?" Ariuna smiled pressing the flask to his lips and tilting it as she set him back upon the ground. The substance was thick, almost like a jelly as it squeezed through his lips and ran down his tongue. The taste was heart wrenching, something that almost made him want to cry, yet as he moved his tongue to prepare for a gag reflex the ooze seemed to dissolve in his mouth. In its place he found a smooth and rich flavor that brought a slight pucker to his lips despite its sweet taste. This feeling lasted for only about three seconds as the taste of sludge quick returned to his taste buds. Dino chocked down the slime just as the heavenly taste returned and gagged for air as he stepped back.

Dino found that his reactions and motor functions were highly impaired as he began to stumble with only one step and lunged forward with an attempt to stop himself. Trying to keep his balance, he began to fall but was held up by Ariuna who continued flashing her magnificent smile. Oh, how he hated that damn smile.

"What the hell did you give me?" Dino shouted trying to dull his senses but no avail. If he were able to stand properly, he would have swung at her.

“Come on kiddo, that is definitely not how a child should speak to long lost family. Where are those manners you learned back working for the thief’s guild?” Ariuna took a swig from the flask before tossing it to some strange creature that seemed quite glad at receiving the drink and downed what was left. “Well if that were the case, I’d guess your manners are far better than I should have expected. I really must be a horrible parent.” For once her smile lowered as the woman began to pout, though a playful glee still overwhelmed her expression and adorned her face. “What the hell. It’s great to see you again kiddo, especially after all these years.” Ariuna embraced Dino with a warm hug that he had to admit was remarkably comforting. “You say hello to your uncle Daruin yet?” Ariuna pointed to the masked man though Dino was unable to see this gesture or the person for that matter as he was still held tightly between her arms, though he doubted freedom from her grasp would be much help for him with turning in his current state. From what he could remember Daruin had been a scrawny a short boy almost comparable to his past self, but the man that now stood behind him had grown into his own. He had to be about twenty-five, making Ariuna twenty-three or so. The other person with them was named Ollin, but he could not recall such a name present during his time spent with the thieves.

“So is anyone going to explain to me exactly who this little punk is then?” Dino recognized Ollin’s voice as the boy stepped out of the shadows and into the light of the flames. There was aggravation in his voice and it shook as though he were harmed in some way. “I believe I’m the guy who was in the process of roughing your ass up before Daruin decided to jump in.” Was Dino's rebuttal, receiving a nasty glare from the boy in return. “So Daruin tossed you around huh? Just like old times.” Ariuna began to laugh obnoxiously like he remembered her doing whenever she was excessively drunk. “Well, if you must know Ollin, this little brat is another one of my sons…so I guess that makes you too brothers-in-law?” The woman never stopped laughing especially after both boys answered with an immediate “What?!” in unison.

Of course, before either could be answered a loud roar pierced the night sky. Dino looked out to the water, seeing two figures quite a ways out in the lake. One he recognized as Genbu, the other he figured was the girl from before. One thing for certain was that the noise had not originated from Genbu and if it was what he believed it to be, then both would be lucky to survive. “Get them out of the water now!” Dino shouted doing his best to break free from Ariuna, though he soon found that the woman had let go of him at some point prior to him noticing. After the unneeded struggled he attempted to make his way toward the water but simply fell to his knees with almost every step.
