Name: Kryos Ralshyn
Age: 20
Race: Dwiilar
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Crimson/Silver
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 160 lbs
Occupation: Mercenary, Inquisitor, Adventurer
Personality: Kryos comes off as a very cold, uncaring person, no doubt because of the dark events that have shaped him. Because of this, he is often observed with eyes of suspicion. His upbringing and past have given him a different view of the world, and that in combination with his heritage makes others believe he is arrogant, while he himself tends to view others as ignorant.
Taking after the traditions of his kind, he watches, but does not participate in the happenings around him, thereby learning and increasing his own knowledge. Only when he must will he speak or act. Being neither pessimistic or optimistic, he looks at the facts and make his judgements accordingly, keeping his own emotions hidden within the mystery that shrouds his figure. Because of his observations and growing wisdom, his words can be very insightful, or if nothing else, logical, which adds to his arrogant appearance.
However, there have been people who have occasionally managed to become a larger part in Kryos' life, who have earned his trust and affection. These are the few who have seen the subdued side of Kryos, one filled with passion, warmth and care. He rarely lets these emotions out of his control, as he fears what his mind could summon up from his past.
He is driven by his own desires and the pursuit of truth and knowledge; free from society's view of moral right and wrong, he uses whatever means he finds acceptable to accomplish his goals. And, like a blistering plague which refuses to leave, the thought of revenge is rooted deep within his heart.
Appearance: Kryos is well-built; his stature speaks of the wild and elegant beauty of the elfin kind, but with the rugged blend of mortality. Along his arms and body, multiple scars can be found lacing his pale skin. He bears two rings, one on his right ring finger, and the other on his left middle, each engraved with the Dwiilarian symbols of destiny and wisdom, respectively. His clothes are the deepest shade of twilight, blue before the final stage of black. He wears pants, comfortable boots, belt, and a loose shirt whose sleeves extend to the elbows. When weather permits, he will also wear a blue-black cloak, of which is torn near the bottom. And always, over his shoulders are the black straps which are attached to his sword sheath. It crosses his back diagonally, from his right shoulder to his left hip.
His hair is of uniform medium length, hanging just past his eyes and ears in front and nearly to his shoulders in the back, and he does not arrange it any particular way. Rather, he lets it fly free, subject to the air around him. As if by some insane chance, or fate playing a part in his life, it always has a natural, feathered look. Forgotten blues and deep indigos rest in the dark plume of his hair, complimenting his clothing. Kryos has a narrow face, with high cheekbones, and it shows the ruggedness of the trail. Still, he does retain a trace of the boy that he grew up as; the shattered innocence that he himself believes is no more. Even so, it is his eyes that are by far his most distinguishing feature. They shine, no matter what color they are, with an almost sinister light, a hidden glow of knowledge. During the reign of the sun, his eyes take on a deep, red hue as vivid as freshly-spilt blood. On the other hand, during the night, his eyes shine silver, stained mercury glowing from within. And always, no matter the shade, his gaze is sharp, piercing through clouds of illusion and into the inner reaches of the soul.
The Dwiilar: Soul guardians, watchers of the spirits, and the peacekeepers of the dead. The Dwiilar are a rare and extremely secretive race, claiming their homeland to be the northern region of the Uialaglini, the Twilight Peaks, and the mystical wood of Trenvar’s Forest that borders these mountains, in Alerar. A twin to humans and elves, they have flitted through myth for centuries as entities that have a mysterious power over others. They dance in the shadows of history, always there, but never seen. Their elusiveness has always been their key to survival.
The Dwiilar have almost identical appearances as humans as elves; hair color, height, structure, it is all similar with slight variations. Their eyes, though, make them unique from other species, as discussed later. They also have more longevity than humans, living usually from 140 to 160 years, though some have made it to 200 years old. Puberty starts at about age 12, and maturity hits at 15.
Most notable about the Dwiilar are their eyes. In a sense, they have two sets of eyes, but even that is not a very good word to describe it. Rather, the color in their eyes, and the powers associated with them, change at sunrise and sunset. This transition takes three to five minutes, during which a dwiilar’s eyesight is weakened, and they cannot use their powers.
During the day, the color of a dwiilar’s eyes are either blue, green, or red, and are always vivid. Normally, their eyes are better than humans and elves, letting them see farther distances during the day, and more clearly at night. When the sun is in the sky, a dwiilar’s eyes are either blue, green, or red, and are always vivid; at night, they are violet, gold, or silver. Red and silver are rarest and, while not being the most useful at face value, have hidden potential.
For a Dwiilar to use his powers, he must use a Dwiilar technique known as Fargazing. Here, the color of the iris will expand over the entire eye and will glow. This will let the user have additional abilities, from walking soundlessly to increased intellect, depending on color. When Fargazing, they can also enter another dimension parallel to Althanas, known as the Fluenta, or the realm of souls. Here, they can see the souls of others, as well as influences nearby. They can combat souls in this state and, while separate from their bodies, they can have minor control over their physical form. Also, the very elite Dwiilar are able to forge a weapon in the Fluenta using the power of their soul. Such a process takes a long time, but the end result is worth the sacrifice. A weapon of white and black will always be in their possession, invisible and useless unless they enter the Fluenta. They can also chance the composition of their soul, making it more black with negative effects, or more pure with beneficial effects, at will.
Since they deal with souls, they can control their own to a great extent. As such, their soul magic takes the from of white or black flames. They affect the soul of others, either lifting other’s up, or bringing them down into despair. They can summon these flames to their bodies and, with practice, to nonliving object close to them. The potency also increases with practice. Dwiilar are immune to this mage.
The Fluenta is a strange place and contains many different levels and depths, each with different meanings. The deeper realms are timeless, though harder to get to. Fargazing take significant effort; when starting, one can only remaining in Althanas or the Fluenta while Fargazing for only a few minutes, though with use, the time can increase indefinitely.
An in-depth article over the Dwiilar can be found here (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?p=136317#post136317).
Skills:
Inquisitor: Naturally curious, and driven by his pursuit of knowledge and truth in the world, Kryos does his best to learn as much as he can from any given situation. This allows him to do most any job he takes a fancy to, and could be called a Jack-of-all-Trades. His fluency in Dwiilarian and Common has been a great asset to him, and he has begun to study Elvish as well. These studies have benefitted him in that he can understand basic elfin conversation, and can speak with average clarity. From traveling the world and his conversations with others, he has a good knowledge of the geography of Althanas, and the main peoples within. While he can read well, he prefers to experience life first hand rather than sit and learn from pages and pages of ink, although he does realizes that some things are better left undone.
Racial Advantages: Kryos, like the rest of the Dwiilar, has physical abilities matching the elves, rather than humans. As such, their speed and grace is equivalent to 2.5x the average human, and their senses are 3.5x that of humans. However, because of their advanced eyes, their eyesight is better than both elves and human: approximately 4.5x that of humans at their best.
Racial Abilities: Not only in physique do the Dwiilar, including Kryos of course, differ from others, but also in their inherent abilities. Fargazing: Kryos, while not the most skilled at this ability, has made some progress in the past five years. Specifically, he is a user of Blood and Moon Gaze, unique to his eye colors. He can currently maintain his gazes for 32 minutes in Althanas, and 40 minutes in the Fluenta.
Blood Gaze: This rare power allows Kryos to read and, in that end, better counter the moves of others. On seldom instances, he is also able to learn the moves he sees, thereby adding them to his knowledge of combat prowess. He is average in the analysis of moves, as well as average in the learning of new moves. On another note, the moves he has learned can only be used while he is fargazing.
Second Wind: An adaption of the Blood Lizard sheer strength, Kryos can summon enough determination and energy to give himself another chance at life. On average, he can continue to act, run, fight, etc., for five extra minutes that he normally wouldn’t have. Of course, afterward, he is totally exhausted and can only do the basic functions. That is, if he is still alive. Adapted from Lexxum Vordic in the Lindequalmë (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=10237).
Moon Gaze: The rarest of all Dwiilar gazes, this lets Kryos detect the presence of others in the vicinity around him, as well as hear conversations that may be taken place. His current range is a 40 yard radius, and the clarity at which he can make out sounds and conversation decreases the further he is from the source.
Soul Magic: Kryos is able to control his soul to some extent, and as such, can affect the souls of others. This magic takes the form of rippling white or black flames around the intended target.
Charity Spell: Appears as white flames. He is currently below average at using this spell, as he can only summon the flames to his hands, but they have an average effect on others. With longer exposure, the effects will also increase. In most circumstances, though, Kryos is only able to give a person a simple feeling of peace or relaxation in times of stress.
Bane Spell: Appears as black flames. Kryos is average at using this spell, being able to engulf both of his arms and his sword completely in magic. The effects of the spell are average like Charity, only being of the opposite effects. Namely, doubt, helplessness, and depression.
The Art of War: Kryos’ training in Evalintal before his self-banishment gave him the guidance and discipline to continue his study of combat. When it comes to weapons, he prefers his own muandrian and can use it with above average proficiency. However, when it comes to other tools of war, he can use any sword-like weapon with average proficiency and is below average with ranged/projectile weapons. He is horrible with heavy weapons, utilizing them with poor skill.
In ways of hand-to-hand combat, his training–whether by instruction or on his own–concentrated on using all parts of his body to help the whole. This manifests itself as being very nimble and light-footed, letting him strike quickly and efficiently with his knowledge of hand strikes, kicks, and grappling techniques, and he can execute these moves with average skill. A creative individual, Kryos does his best to combine his martial artistry, weapon prowess, and his racial abilities and powers simultaneously. Although, he doesn’t quite have a knack for it just yet, probably being just average in relation to other Dwiilar.
Realms of the Soul: Every Dwiilar can enter the Fluenta, going about as they wish or fighting with others. However, the Fluenta is more complex than most realize; it contains many levels, all of which have different meanings and purposes. Many do not know of their existence, while a few can delve into deeper areas. But as fate would have it, Kryos Ralshyn became the next Raldian of the Dwiilar when he was twelve years old. His future would be one of leadership and guidance; the one person whose individual opinion weighed more than anyone else in his society. As such, he has enormous potential in the art of Fargazing, being able to delve into many of the levels of the Fluenta. Perhaps the most sacred is the Birthplace, one of the few realms which is timeless. Here, many of the souls of the previous Raldians reside, and the future ones as well. The Raldian is able to visit the Birthplace on occasions to seek counsel and learn wisdom and knowledge. However, Kryos has only been to the Birthplace twice, once when he was eleven and became the Raldian, and again at fifteen, both of which were accomplished by his unconscious mind. At this point in time, he hasn’t been able to develop this ability fully, and has trouble consciously going into any realms below the surface levels of the Fluenta.
Equipment:
Weapons: The muandrian that has been his sole companion on many adventures, this single blade is the only weapon in Kryos’ arsenal of weapons. It has been finely forged by the blacksmiths of his home, and is composed of an unknown material that is stronger than steel. The blade is straight, sharpened on both edges, and is thirty-six inches in length and three and a half inches in width. It has the same silver, reflective color as steel. The sword is also enchanted with a holy attribute of advanced strength, making it ideal for clashes against zombies, ghouls, and things of necromantic or evil origin. It will cause instant death to normal level zombies and the like with a single slash, although the blade must actually cut through flesh. Otherwise, the effect will be pain and the affliction of some damage at touch. This spell appears as faint, white mist that is trapped beneath the surface of the sword. The sheath is simple in design, black with strands of indigo weaving along its length and an elegant, white symbol on both sides, close to where the hilt of the sword would be. The sheath also has the effects of the holy enchantment, although it is considerably weaker than the actual blade. During the time with this new power, he has gained a little control over it, being able to suppress it when he wants to, and evoke it with a Charity spell. This lets him have a chance at fighting without the constant shine of the spell, although, he hasn’t perfected this yet. He wears his sword on his back with straps that connect to his sheath, crossing diagonally from his right shoulder to left hip, easy to grasp.
Tears of the Moon: A stamina potion that Kryos learned how to make in his youth, it is a useful and simple concoction. The ingredients are simple, found in any store and easily obtained in the wild. However, he can only make a new batch during the full moon, so he makes sure that his stock is full as often as the moon permits. This dark green fluid is contained in a crystal vial that fits in the palm of his hand, holding perhaps five swallows, but gives the drinker renewed strength.
History:
Kryos Ralshyn was born in the capital of his people, Evalintal. As a child, he was treated as any other child, watched over, but respected as an equal. He grew up with friends and the loving care of his people. Of course, his two eye colors, crimson and silver, meant that he had the potential to become the more than just an individual, but no one could be sure. Then, when he turned eleven years old, he had a dream where he met with the soul of the previous Raldian, in the deep realm of the Fluenta known as the Birthplace. This signified his inheritance of the title and calling of the Raldian.
His training begun immediately in the ways of the Dwiilar. His teacher was patience at his struggles in learning how to fargaze at will, and he matured with the passage of time. His life, though difficult and frustrating at times, was good, and he enjoyed the beauty of his isolated home. He felt he was becoming the person his parents and peers expected him to be.
Until that night.
He was fifteen, and still struggling with fargazing. His best friend, Lorin, convinced him to go to Darken's Cave to continue learning the Dwiilarian art. Upon arrival, they were ambushed by the Shadow Riders, the main faction of rouge Dwiilar that had turned from life in Evalintal, who bound them in the caves. They attacked Lorin, stabbed him before Kryos' eyes, and in a rage broke into the Fluenta for the first time. He attacked with all he had. But his strength was nothing compared to the power of the elite Dwiilar. They defeated him with ease, mocked him, and then attacked his soul. Agony filled him as he fought for his existence. He would not let them steal his power, as they had stolen Lorin's before his eyes.
He didn't know what saved him. Waking shortly before dawn in his own bed, he remembered fleeting images of black flame and a soundless ripple of power, then trees and stone as he carried Lorin back. The silver eyes of his teacher. His wounds had been treated, the broken ribs and fingers bandaged as well as they could be. He was on the mend, until he discovered the true effects of the previous night.
Lorin had died.
His world, his innocence, was stripped away in that terrifying moment. He left, ran away from his people, his home, his duty. He ran in a blinded fear that kept him going. He couldn't accept what had happened. It had all been his fault. If only he had been stronger, more adept at his abilities, Lorin wouldn't have died. He ran with the numb chaos of his mind obliterating all reason.
Until he remembered. The Shadow Riders lived on, and he recalled something they had mentioned. "It is time to add his power to ours." Kryos would not let this by. He stopped and organized his thoughts, forming a plan, a purpose. He would find the Shadow Riders, and he would find the answers to his questions.
Five years passed, and he came no closer to reaching his goal. At first, he simply learned how to survive. Then, he began hunting his prey. Yet every time he would get a lead, a disregarded clue, the Riders would vanish. In this process, he wasted five years chasing shadows. So he changed his priorities. He began to live life, to learn so as to be better prepared when the time came to exact his revenge. Setting his past behind him, he decided to go to Scara Brae, the land of new beginnings. His journey there was only the beginning.
Soon, he learned of the great University of Istien, in the capital of the fair folk. His time in Scara Brae was beneficial, but he had no reason to stay, no more information to gather. He set sail to the land of the elves. He arrived and, once entering the landlocked capital, immersed himself in the libraries and people, searching for clues and gaining knowledge. But the richness of the vibrant culture was not to last.
Xem’Zund had returned, laying waste to the soil and people of Raiaera with his legions of undead. He knew that to stay would be tempting death, so he ran, intent on seeking refuge in Alerar. But before he could make it far, he met a group of survivors from Valinatal, now a crater in the earth. He agreed to help them and made for Anebrilith, but one of the warriors was killed before they made it. Anger in his heart at his death, he returned to the Obsidian Spire and solved his curiosity and satisfied his bloodlust, accepting the death of his friend. Now, all that remains is for him to choose. The choice to stay and fight, or the flee the country and leave the fate of Raiaera to unseen heroes . . .

The choice to stay and fight, or the flee the country and leave the fate of Raiaera to unseen heroes . . .

can find beauty in the absence of light.
