Name: William Arcus
Age: 34
Race: Revenant (formerly Human)
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Black
Height: 5’ 11”
Weight: 178 lbs.
Occupation: Adventurer
History:
As a forester, William Arcus spent much of his life learning the ways of the woods, making a life out of hewing lumber and firewood for the nearby settlements. He was a simple, hardworking man with a loving family and was content with his lifestyle. Unfortunately, times change, and not always for the better. Kal’Necroth, a sorcerer of the infernal, had found an ancient tome describing long forgotten magics and gotten it into his mind that it was his right by power to rule all of the lands that he surveyed. His eye first fell on William’s small corner of the world and Kal’Necroth’s army of mercenaries spent through the valley that housed William’s woods, killing and enslaving all they came across.
It was a small band of raiders that found William’s hut in the woods, at a time when William was out. The raiders murdered William’s son and wife for sport before burning the hut to the ground. When William returned, there was nothing left for him but revenge. William spent the next several months conducting ambushes and covert operations against units of Kal’Necroth’s army, before his luck ran out. Though William had lived his entire life in the woods and knew the lay of the land better than any of the mercenaries, William was eventually cornered and captured. Just before he was to be put to death, one of the commanders of the army took notice of the single man that had caused so much havoc among his ranks. He sent William back to Ka’Necroth, along with an account of William’s capabilities.
Kal’Necroth was overjoyed at William’s arrival. He had recently translated a ritual from his book which described a process to separate the soul from a human body, and replace it with a spirit of undeath. The soul would be bound in a specially prepared trinket and the host body would remain directly under commend of the soul’s controller. Another side effect of the ritual was that the spirit of undeath would cause the body to slowly repair itself of all physical damage, rendering the host effectively unkillable. Kal’Necroth planned to use the ritual on William and use William’s expertise to turn him into an assassin. Kal’Necroth’s hubris would prove to be his undoing as he determined that in addition to binding a spirit of undeath in William’s body, he would also bind a demonic soul within, dubbing his creation a Revenant.
William the Revenant was a success. Powerful beyond any human means, whispers of the Kal’Necroth’s immortal assassin soon had Kal’Necroth’s enemies living in perpetual fear. Unfortuantely, the demonic spirit within William was prone of berserker rages and when it became dominant, it would slaughter friend and foe alike. Kal’Necroth was initially diligent in maintaining his guard around his Revenant but grew lax when he realized that even during these rages his possession of William’s soul afforded him safety from William. Unfortunately, Kal’Necroth’s possession of William’s soul did not keep him safe from other hazards. During one of William’s rages, before Kal’Necroth could put a hold on him, William mortally wounded one of Kal’Necroth’s commanders. In his death throes, the commander ran into Kal’Necroth, causing him to drop the glass orb that he had used to house William’s soul. The glass orb shattered and William’s soul was returned to his body. In fear, Kal’Necroth used his magic to try and subdue the raging demon but was barely able to keep himself alive to escape. Without the leadership of Kal’Necroth, his armies soon turned on themselves and were defeated.
When the demonic rage subsided from William, he found that he was once again in control of himself, though he remained a Revenant. Vowing vengeance upon Kal’Necroth for his blasphemous existence and the horrible acts he had been forced to commit, William took Kal’Necroth’s tome of ancient sorcery and set off to learn to control the demon within.
Appearance:
William’s physical human form is nothing special to look at. He is a tall, athletically built man with black hair and eyes. The power of the demonic soul within him causes his flesh to crack and smolder. If he didn’t also have a spirit of undeath restoring his physical form he would be consumed by the demonic power and reduced to ash. Since William’s flesh is constantly tearing apart and restoring itself, he keeps as much of his flesh covered as he can, wearing thick denim and wool cloaks to ward off the elements and prying eyes. He frequently wraps the parts of him that aren’t covered by his cloaks in heavy bandages and keeps the lower half of his face covered by a scarf.
William may also tap into the demon essence within him, and when he does so, his appearance changes drastically. The demonic power consuming his flesh increases so that his entire body becomes raw, and he grows long claws and jagged teeth.
Personality:
Because of the demonic power consuming him, William is in constant pain which has made him irritable and ill-tempered. He remembers that he was once happy, and some of the kindness of his former life pokes through in short bursts, especially if something reminds him of his wife and son. William has a short temper and is prone to violent outbursts, especially when the demon within him is close to raging.
Skills:
Claws and Fangs: Above Average – The Revenant’s natural weapons. They are currently as strong as iron and do slashing or piercing damage.
Revenant Healing: Average – The spirit of undeath within the Revenant slowly repairs damage done to the Revenant’s physical form. Though the process is slow, given a long enough period of time, the revenant can recover from all but the most serious wounds.
Equipment:
Heavy Traveling Clothes – Tough wool and denim apparel that wards off the rigors of travel and bad weather. William wears a heavy vest, pants, and a thick cloak to cover as much of his flesh as possible.
Iron Hunting Knife: Heavy, sturdy knife used for clearing brush and cleaning kills.
Tome of Kal’Necroth: The tome of ancient magic that Kal’Necroth used to create William’s Revenant body. William doesn’t understand any of it, but keep it with him in hopes that one day he can learn its secrets and perhaps undo what was done to him.
Burlap Traveling Pack: Standard burlap backpack that William carries over one shoulder. The contents include:
Change of clothes: Same as traveling clothes above but with no boots.
Water Skin: Standard water skin that will hold a day’s worth of water.
Sewing Kit: A small sewing kit that is used for daily maintenance and repair of clothes.
Utility Knife: Small knife used for trimming small branches off firewood and cutting hard cheese. Not really useful in a fight.
