(Been here before. It's good to be back. It's taken me such a long time to create a successor to Canen, but I feel like this might just work for me. Cheers. Canen Darkflight.)
Name: Luferio
Luferio, in Lufayne caste dialect, is the literal meaning for 'Beacon' or 'Torch'. In other Lufayne language branches, such as the Tal'Set, it also translates as 'The Guide' or 'The Pathfinder'.
Age: Forty Riia (Twenty Althanian Years)
Class: Warrior / Mage
Race: The Lufayne (Lufayne caste. The Lufayne and their castes are explained in detail below.)
Alignment: Neutral
Description:
Luferio is humanoid in appearance, resembling a carrion-eating avian creature. He has inverted raptor-like jaws and his dark green skin is covered in leathery dragon-esque scales (leather tier on chest / hide tier on arms), which overlap all over his chest and arms. Typically his bone structure is light, in line with Lufayne ancestory, and he is tall and slender, although not very broad. He has four digits on his hands and feet. His head is crowned with quills or spines that form part of his sensory apparatus; these connect to the brain via ganglia. Luferio's eyes have a slitted pupil and are gold in coloration, and allow him to peer into the infrared spectrum, enabling Luferio to track his prey by body heat.
He dresses in tradition Lufayne Caste attire: a dark brown robe, tied with a silver clip bearing the insignia of the Valnyd, their spiritual leader. Over this robe he wears chalk white bone plating that resembles armour but not tough enough to serve that purpose, as it is hollow and light.
Weapon: Lufayne Caste pickaxe
A crude and simple tribal weapon, the Lufayne Caste's main armament is a metre and a half in length, crafted from iron. The head is a simple curved blade of a length of around twenty four inches, crafted from a metal resembling steel in strength, weight and composition. It also sports a twelve inch long spike on the base of the main shaft, used to tear at flesh and bone or stab during melee attacks.
Weapon skill: Above average.
Skills:
Heat seeker: Luferio can switch vision between normal eyesight and infra red vision. This ability allows him to track prey by their heat signiture, up to a range of a mile.
Feral rush: Luferio's agility is what gives him the edge during battle, with the Lufayne body being adapted in the wild for hunting. This ability allows Luferio to quickly close a gap between him and an opponent by hastily leaping a distance of up to three metres at a time.
Personality:
Luferio is an intelligent and gracious member of the Lufayne. Unlike his brothers-in-arms, he is not entirely savage, and holds most he meets with respect. However, when in battle, his feral side can often bleed through, and he is known to be relentless against his enemies. He is patriotic and loyal to the Valnyd, the Lufayne and especially his friends and brothers Zydoss and Razzick. He strives to learn about other cultures and is curious about the different faiths on Althanas.
The Lufayne: Biological Analysis
The Lufayne are vaguely humanoid in appearance, resembling carrion-eating avian creatures, though the appearance is slightly reptilian especially since most Lufayne are covered in dragon-esque scales. They have inverted raptor like jaws, and their bone structure is light due to the Lufayne's avian ancestry. They have four digits on their hands and feet. While tall and wiry, they have an extremely strong musculature, coupled with quick reflexes, and are stronger than regular humans per say. Their heads are crowned with tough quills or spines that form part of their sensory apparatus; these connect to the brain via ganglia. Lufayne eyes have slit pupils and are generally gold or silver in coloration allowing them to see into the infrared spectrum, enabling the Lufayne to track their prey by body heat.
Lufayne do not urinate or defecate. This is because they possess an incredibly effective digestive system. What cannot be digested is regurgitated, and some chemicals are released as a thick sweat. This sweat has slight heat retardant and antibiotic properties, and can be altered by the Lufayne to exude a variety of pheromones. These pheromones can be controlled and altered, and are a component of the Lufayne language. They are also used to control packs of Lufayne that gather to hunt, mark territory or trails, and (according to one researcher), are a component of Lufayne humor towards outsiders. This secretion can also be used to change the pigment within the scales of the Lufayne, allowing colours such as chrome or even diamond blue to show.
One of the most peculiar biological traits of the Lufayne is their ability to rapidly adapt and mutate, with the capability for significant changes over four or five generations. The digestive system of the Lufayne is able to extract DNA from their food, which is then incorporated into that particular Lufayne's DNA structure. Selective breeding ensures that these consumed traits become present in later generations. However, this is not without risk, as the new traits can be accompanied by a loss in sentience, and some Lufayne have been trapped in sterile animalist forms.
The Lufayne: A Background
The Lufayne once lived a tribal existence on their homeworld of Riias, which is located to the galactic north-east of Althanas.
At some point in their history, Riias was visited by a hostile invasion from a dimension-jumping race known as the Tal'Set. The invaders were faced by a warrior race with a 'taste for flesh', and subsequently wiped out. As dimension-jumping knowledge is encoded in the Tal'Set DNA, the Lufayne were quickly able to mimic aspects of Tal'Set technology and magic within a few generations, and subsequently split their race into two castes: The Lufayne Caste, the core of Lufayne, and the Tal'Set Caste, those who are descended from the warriors who fought, defeated and consumed the original Tal'Set. In Lufayne lore, the Tal'Set caste is a caste of honour and respect, and only the most powerful of the Lufayne reside in this group.
Over the next thousand years, Riias's primary continent became host to at least five Lufayne 'hive cities', each containing millions of Lufayne. Farming and mining became commonplace during a time known as the 'Lufayne Expansionist Phase'. The Lufayne's Tal'Set caste were able to construct crude warp-capable portals, known as webways. With these, the Lufayne were able to colonize numerous worlds, under the leadership of the Lufayne leader, The Valnyd.
During this time, the Lufayne encountered the original Tal'Set again, but in this instance their enemy had the advantage. Untried leaders and untested tactics resulted in a string of defeats for the Lufayne, as they were forced off their newly-claimed worlds. The Lufayne were forced to fight a guerrilla war on their own worlds, and many of the Lufayne who escaped the initial slaughter became mercenaries for other races to survive. The Tal'Set were able to invade Riias, and at one point less than 50,000 Lufayne remained.
The Tal'Set, however, found it increadibly difficult to survive in Riias's harsh conditions, and soon began to succumb to disease, famine (as they could not consume the same food as the Lufayne) and a fightback from the Lufayne themselves. Riias was eventually freed from Tal'Set influence, and the Lufayne mercenaries who had escaped the war advocated a return to the time before the incursion. However, those who had fought the Tal'Set on the Lufayne's worlds did not wish to rebuild a society which had led them to war, but ill-prepared them for it. Led by the legendary Lufayne Tal'Set caste leader Vioar, these Lufayne wanted to revert further, to a point before the first Tal'Set had landed on Riias. A compromise was reached, with the traditional ways respected on Riias and the other Lufayne worlds, while kindreds traveled to serve as mercenaries to other races, returning periodically to pass on newly-acquired genetic material to future generations.
In the present, Riias is a wild and untamed world; the hive cities reclaimed by the forest. Contact between the Lufayne and the world of Althanas was first made during the Valnyd Crusade, with the Lufayne's Tal'Set mages having opened an unstable dimensional webway to the planet. Later contact between the Lufayne and the planet of Althanas has also been made, but only minimal numbers of Lufayne have set foot on the planet.
Luferio is a member of the Lufayne Caste. Given the task by The Valnyd, the ultimate leader of the Lufayne, of setting foot on and exploring Althanas, in an aim to expand Lufayne contact with the Althanian populace, he and his cadre of Tal'Set caste warriors Zydoss and Razzick aim to learn more about this strange planet and their people.
His journey begins in Scara Brae, a month after emerging from the dull static of the webway gate and breathing his first breath of Althanian air.
