Laureolus
10-05-09, 09:32 PM
Name: Decima Julia Laureola (Or more commonly known as “Laureola Anteitus/Anteita”)
Age: 27
Race: Human
Skin Tone: Caucasian
Hair Color: A bit lighter then Rust
Eye Color: Slate gray
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 168 lbs

Occupation: Former First centurion and Tribune of the Twenty Ninth Legion

Appearance: Laureola’s hard slate irides are framed by sun-bronzed skin and short rusted ponytail. Well built and athletic, above average height, and imposing bearing overshadow her subtle beauty that received little help from a life of war.

True to Roman infantry, Laureola uses heavy knee length mail armor that lets her retain decent maneuverability while still protecting her from everything but blunt trauma. A dark crimson wool undershirt goes under the mail with a heavy white purple trimmed cloak denoting her former rank.

Personality: Quick, analytical and decisive, Laureola is quick to grasp her surroundings and the reality of the situation at hand. While not indifferent and unsympathetic, twelve years of campaigning and fighting have left her more focused on what can be done, not how did that happen.

Still, Laureola takes her oath to the Emperor and People seriously and will go within reasonable bounds to lend a hand or ear to a plight.

History: Born into an equestrian family of no small position in a Dacian border city, Laureola had a care-free childhood. A good education, proper admiration for the Imperial cult and Roman state, and an interest in history made prospects for appointment into provincial government the likely even at the age of 14.

Sadly, the first Scythian migrations began then. The first danger to the Empire’s stability in one hundred years, the first steppe migration caught the Empire off guard with a greater part of its forces spilt between West Africa and the Lower Nile valley. Scythian horse archers pushed through the Dacian borders forces, swarmed into the province itself and pillaging cities as they made their way to Greece. Laureola’s home city was one of the first to be sacked and Laureola escaped with the retreating, almost fleeing, border forces as they made their way to link up other local units.

With the Dacian province critically short on man power and the first real reinforcements to counter a force this size a month away, the call went out to every able bodied person to defend the land. First used as a nurse, then moved to logistical planning to help with the lack of intelligent officers when her education became apparent. Laureola’s movement of resource and men to key locations in front of the Scythian advance bought enough time for those reinforcements to arrive and stem the horde. Her efforts bought her admission into the military at the rank of lesser Tribune, rank that many didn’t get till their late twenties.

Thirteen years later, two more Scythian migrations beaten back, and five campaigns against the steppes later Laureola was one of the most accomplished officers in the Empire. Almost constantly campaigning against steppe incursion, she fell rallying the line in battle. She had seven year of service left to the Empire.

----Laureola comes from an alternate Graeco-Roman timeline in which the Greek and Roman gods are real, Hercules had preformed his twelve labors, human use of magic is overwhelmingly divine in nature, and the Roman Empire has flourished until the current date of 773 CE. The god love to fiddle just as much as they do the classical stories.

Skills/Familiar:

Tactics and Strategy: A former lesser Tribune (between colonel and brigadier general) with both extensive battle and logistical experience in the Scythians steppes, along with academic study of Greek and Roman histories, Laureola’s grasp of strategic warfare and tactics in battle are to be greatly valued. With proper reconnaissance and logistical support she can command apparent losses into solid victories.

Legionnaire: Twelve year spent laboring in public quarries and felling virgin forests in public service have left Laureola more than strong. Battles spent running across battle lines rallying troops have strengthened her, while chasing skirmishers has left her fleet, and many days spend eying her enemies on the battlefield have left her with a keen eye for reading her enemies. Battle has taught her that minimizing effort spent in fighting and waiting for quick thrusts or slashes are more likely to win then flashy swordplay. Daily training and repeated battle experience have left Laureola skilled with a sword and shield and at defending against foes.

Laureola as strong as an athletic man and one and times as fleet. Laureola has average skill with sword and shield on the ground and horseback.

Familiar: The one familiar thing (har har) Laureola has gotten in Althanas is a great eagle familiar. Utterly divine in origin, it seems it was most likely crafted from the fallen standard of 29th legion upon Laureola’s death. Made of and radiating what seems to be the dawn light, the bird closely resembles a white-tailed eagle. It stubbornly refuses to be more than ten feet away from Laureola, which dooms attempts at stealth to failure from the start.

To evil aligned characters or those with hostile intent toward Laureola, this eagle appears to be made of harsh noon glare instead of soft dawn rays. This familiar is divine in origin, cannot attack, and cannot be dismissed unless you are semi-divine or expend excessive effort to temporary dismiss it.

Favor and Blessing of the Gods: The favor of the Gods is no small thing. Minor benefits experienced while her familiar is present are: Simple foods served from bowls, pot, and pitchers do not empty ( salads, simple soups, bread and cheese, tea, water, wine). Laureola is rested from 4 hours of sleep instead of 8.

Equipment:

Weapons: A simple fine steel Hispanic gladius, years of service showing through the bright polish. It’s slightly longer than average coming in at 30 inches. Held in a sheath decorated with laurel branches on her waist, it is less prone to stick in cold or wet weather.

Shield: A tower shield, painted red with two golden two eagles perched on top and under the boss, with a height of 42 inches, width of 28 inches from the concave edges, and as thick as the palm of an average man. The rim and boss of the shield are steel and the body of laminated- wood (oak)

Armor: Already mentioned was her steel mail armor, which covers up from her neck to her knees. Steel half-greaves protect her lower legs and calves, while leather arm guards offer some protection to her forearm.

Amulet: A superlative amulet in the shape of an owl, the craftsmanship involved in the crafting of this is beyond mortal means. Tiny silver feathers shake when moving or speaking and when Laureola speaks its clear melodious voice is heard instead of hers.

Not born in Althanas, Laureola only way to communicate with non-Latin speakers is with above amulet. Currently the amulet can use Tradespeak and High Elven. Given three months of heavy exposure to a known language or one month of actively trying to learn one the amulet can be considered fluent in that language. Note said amulet is mechanical.
