History
Marius Dhuoda was born to the small merchant town of Evermore on the southern end of Corone. The small town built over a deep natural harbor, known primarily for its trade in lumber, and was a common checkpoint for merchants sailing the southern rim of Corone. It had its stock of fisherman and sailors, and was a well known settling area for the rich looking for a beautiful sea view atop hillsides.
His father Philias Dhuoda, son of the distinguished Naval Commander Darius Dhuoda, was a well known fisherman for the town, bringing in much of the towns fish supply. From his father, Philias had good relations with the naval officers stationed in Evermore, giving the family a reasonably high influence. His mother Grace Dhuoda was the son of a farmer. Marius was the only child of Philias and Grace, taking on the family name, and later the family’s ship; he was expected to go into sailing as his father did, but held back by his mother. Instead he was schooled in reading and writing, excelling in both. However, he was removed from his schooling when his Mother became ill. Marius would then take the responsibility of caring for his mother.
Because of his fathers friendship with the naval officers, Marius’ name was penned into a ships books at the age of nine, giving him the benefits of going to sea without actually haven gone to sea. His legitimate time at sea started at the age of twelve when his father’s business was at a all time low, and the family was heading into poverty. Marius joined the merchant ship Molly Seta bound to northern Corone as a carpenters assistant, where he first learned the trade. During the voyage, he took to the art of sailing very well, and became a favorite of the famed Captain Needa for his zealous interest in sailing and knowledge of the sea. It was this interest that led him to his next voyage at the age of thirteen on the ship Dolly Vita as an able seaman, destined to Scara Brae delivering lumber from Underwood. This was his only trip outside of Corone, further exciting his curiosity about the world. Because of poor weather, the ship was forced to take an alternate route, ultimately adding on several thousand miles to the voyage, and leading the ship into more dangerous and less shipped waters. The ship was attacked on several occasions by “large sea creatures” and all were successfully fended off with minor casualties. During the three year voyage Marius was once again one of the leading newcomers to sailing.
Marius remained in Evermore for one year after his return, watching over his mother, and stayed with her a year until she died. After which he went again to sea with Captain Needa, who excitingly accepted him on as a helmsman. The ship, Royal Fortune, was sent to explore further south of Corone in order to discover and obtain new islands to add to the Corone Empire. This Expedition, lasting five years, was unsuccessful in its attempt to discover new territory. The series of small islets found all contained pirates and smugglers, and were duly exterminated, but at no small cost to the ship. Most men during the voyage were at one point in time injured, including Marius who lost a finger and acquired an arrow wound in his right arm. This was exceedingly grim during the last year of the travel, when the surgeon received a fatal injury to the stomach, and the apprentice had to take up the position. The ship eventually made its way back to Corone, but not without its damage; the ship was almost in ruins, and the crew was cut to half its original size. The Coronian government although disappointed was not altogether dissatisfied; the expedition did yield results in both discovery and law, having found islets with new plants and wildlife, and exterminating many of the states enemies. The crew was ultimately rewarded for bravery and valor. Marius too gained recognition as a seaworthy crewman, and was promoted into the ranks of the Coronian Navy, to have sail whenever called upon.
It was on his return home, when he realized the tragic news of his father. The Starla on return from a fishing trip to the Cape of Ocean’s Jewels, was attacked by a large beast, not usually seen in that area of sea. This beast was twice the size of The Starla, and it had very large tentacles. The ship was crushed almost immediately in its grip. Only a handful of the ships crewman survived. Owen Rikerd, the Ships first mate and friend of the family, brought the news to Marius only ten days after Dhuoda’s return from the south. With him he brought Starla, the families’ ship, repaired, given to Marius as inheritance when Philias died. Marius became depressed after his father’s death. His time was mostly spent at home by himself trying to figure out what to make of the situation. He finally decided that there was nothing left in his home town for him, so he decided to leave and venture out on his own.
With his new ship and new esteem, Marius set off to run his own merchant business, just as his father ran his fishing. He spent his newly earned money on honey and spice, sent down the Firewine river from Underwood, which he planned on selling throughout the ports along the southern rim of Corone, to places where inland supplies were hard to obtain. He worked efficiently as possible, in ways he learned from Captain Needa on the several voyages. Of the many positions to be filled on board, Marius took it upon himself to fulfill many of them, including Master, purser, and carpenter. Carrying out several tasks at once, and working closely with the crew were things he’d learned from Needa, and would ultimately gain him great respect with seamen in Evermore.
The Starla set off on Marius’ twenty second birthday, sent off with great support from Needa. The first leg of the trip went extremely smooth. The seas where calm and Marius and the crew worked well together on the small ship. At reaching Sherapo, the next town down the line, the Starla docked for two weeks, giving the crew a chance to rest after sleeping on deck the ship. Meanwhile Marius tried to get a trade deal with towns shops, but to almost no success. The demand for sugar and honey were low, and only two of the sixty jars of honey were sold. Despite this blow to his ego, Marius was able to rally the crew into another go down on the Corone sea trade.
Part two of passage was confronted with terrible weather, something that devastated the crew’s moral and tested even Marius in his capability of controlling the ship. The hurricane wind and ice cold air was causing havoc on the men who had to sleep on deck. Signs of frost bite and arose across the ship, not excluding the surgeons assistant, who was accepted on board instead of an authentic surgeon. On the third week out the men could go no longer on deck, ergo Marius had to decide how to proceed. On the tough decision, he decided to discard half the ships supplies into the sea, and house the men below deck. On extra rations of stew and biscuits, the crew slowly recovered, only working for the accustomed four hours before changing shifts. Two of the fourteen men suffered extreme frost bite on their hands which had to be removed. The feeling of letting is crew down laid heavily on the shoulders of Marius; the trade was going badly for him, and he was unsure if he could hold the crew in order until the trips end. Trying to make amends, the two disabled men were given permission to sleep in the captains quarters, but were still made to work on several small tasks while they recovered.
After twelve weeks, the Starla finally made its way into the port of Reeshgyla. The ship was ravaged, almost all of the supplies were destroyed, and six crew members had died. During those weeks, besides the bad weather, a small mutiny occurred. Six of the men and the captain were held up by the other eight. The mutineers purposely destroyed much of the ships supplies, and in the small battle that occurred afterward, most of the rebels were killed.
After docking, the remaining men, out of respect, left the ship without pay. Marius too, had lost almost everything on the trip. Years worth of money was lost, and now he only had a ship and a few barrels of spice and honey left, which would fetch less than several hundred gold. He would return to Evermore a failure, with nothing.
Skills
Dagger Proficiency- Above Average
During the constant battles aboard the Royal Fortune, Marius was often left without a sword to work with. In these situations, he was left to use his dagger. And although small and feeble, in the hands of Marius it became a great weapon. The often cramped fighting spaces of a ships deck made it too difficult for swords to work effectively, making daggers the perfect weapon for close combat.
Swordplay-Average
When in the midst of battle on land where space was more open the sword is a sailors best weapon. Through the countless battles on land, Marius learned to use the sword to attack as well as defend and has become AVERAGE with it.
Swift
Any sailor worth his salt can climb the rigging or work on a mast, but Marius can do it better. During the ship swarming attacks of his time on The Royal Fortune, Marius was often forced to climb up to defend himself. During these times he could not afford to lose balance, nor lose concentration from the battle, and as a result of this he has gained great proficiency in speed and balance when working on a ship. He is able to operate at 2x’s the average speed of a seasoned sailor with average balance, when working on a ship .
Strength/Tough Skin
One hundred days at sea would harden even the most fragile of men. The constant battle with weather and man has battle hardened Marius making him stronger than most, and giving him thicker skin. Marius has spent half his life at sea, and played almost every role a seaman could do. From the all hard work on deck, and countless battles, he has become 1.5x’s as strong as the average man, and has skin twice the hardness of average, allowing him to go undamaged by small slashes from iron weapons.
Seafaring
During his fourteen years at sea Marius has worked almost every position available on a ship. He has all the knowledge needed to sail and captain a ship.
Crafty
One of Marius’ hobbies that he has got quite good at is cartography. This has become a favorite thing to do during the long months at sea for him; he creates all his own charts, and updates existing ones. As well as creating charts, Marius is a novice carpenter, studying in his spare time the arts of ship making.
Equipment
The Starla: Marius’ ship, handed down from his father, and from his father‘s father. This seventy four foot ketch is great for trekking semi deep waters along the rim and coasts of continents. The ship is unable to go to deeper water being too small and light, but it is those characteristics that make its such a good vessel. It’s two unique masts make it faster and easier to sail various kinds of wind, and it can out maneuver almost any other ship out their. The empty hull is great for holding cargo, which was made specifically to not leak by Philias, enabling him to carry fish in it. Unfortunately there is almost no room for crew down there when anything is being shipped. The ship is always equipped with several items that may be needed. Always spare sail cloth is carried, at least fifty square feet of it, stored beneath deck. Also three extra full sized masts are stored underneath, to be cut to size when needed. A small supply of cutlasses is held in a storing case just outside the captains quarters under lock and key. And finally, cheap twelve foot long lances are always roped to the sides of the ship to be thrusted randomly by scared seamen when a sea monster arrives.
Li Li: Marius’ dagger. He although he never names his weapons, this one is special. It belonged to a good friend of Marius on his first voyage, who named his spear Li Li. Four months into its journey and two thousand miles off course the ship was attacked by a monster. The ship retaliated with spears. There was almost no casualties, but the friend of Marius didn’t make it, dying as he jammed his spearhead into the monsters throat. Marius later retrieved the spear, removed the head of it to keep as his own weapon in memory. It his made of STEEL.
Sailors Tools: Marius always carries his own tools along with him at sea. What he has is: Large leather bound book, pen, ink, large parchment paper, sea charts, compass, sextant, magnifying glass, telescope, and carpenters tools.
