Niril
10-08-09, 11:35 AM
Name: Niril Gregor-Hrun
Age: 19
Race: Human
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Black
Height: 6’6
Weight: 137 lbs
Occupation: Intellectual

Personality:
Niril is incredibly logical. He doesn’t let a single word leave his lips, nor does he execute even a minor action without deep thought, analysis and rethought. Needless to say, he is a man of few words. He has also developed some of the negative traits associated with brilliance. He is blunt, unemotional and Self-important. To people who have met Niril, he seems rude, but he is unintentionally so. Although he is very intelligent, he is not spiritual. He does not partake in meditation or any other ‘mind-opening’ practices.

Appearance:
Niril is tall, especially for a Human. He also appears (to the uninformed) as a weak and frail-bodied individual. There is a small kernel of truth to this statement, but in actuality Niril is as approximately as strong and healthy as your average human male. Years of thinking instead of physical activity haven’t promoted muscle growth in the same way as most young adults his age, but he is by no means a weakling. He has a full head of medium length jet black hair that sometimes obscures his vision, but does not resemble the ‘emo look.’ He wears a plain white T-shirt that is immaculately clean, as well as light, faded, equally pristine denim jeans.

Skills:
Problem Solving – Niril’s incredible cognitive dexterity allows for an uncanny quickness at solving problems. He usually will understand complicated, abstract or abstruse situations more quickly than other characters or NPC’s. Although this sort of skill has no real concrete definition, it allows Niril to excel at Riddles, Chess, Puzzles, Mazes (including dungeon navigation, if applicable), as well as an extremely reliable internal clock. Eventual development of this skill well help Niril discern truthful statements, develop factual conclusions from seemingly useless evidence, resist magic, and other impressive feats of the mind.

Weaponry – Niril is completely untrained in the use of any weaponry.

Armorer – Niris is completely untrained in the use of any armor.

Spellcraft – Niril has had no formal training in magic, and everything he has learned is self taught. By dissecting the laws of what is and is not, he has discovered a few useful tricks. He can only really hope to achieve minor spells such as basic illumination, minor telekinetics or clairvoyence or other small parlor tricks. Even so, Niril finds these tasks incredibly taxing.

Flickered Flame - Niril is able to channel a small flame in his palms, although he hasn’t learned to stabilize it. It will only last a few seconds (long enough to light a campfire) before it extinguishes.

Mind over Matter - Niril is also able to move a very light load (5 lbs) via telepathy.

Mind-Numbing - Niril can stimulate the parts of the brain responsible for the nervous system functions to create pain, numbness or even calefaction. Although nothing permanent happens to the victim, sometimes a sharp arm pain is all Niril needs to dodge an otherwise fatal sword-sweep. It should be noted that these attacks do not work on strong-willed or very intelligent beings. They are even more exerting than the parlor tricks and after a few uses without rest, Niril finds himself with a throbbing headache, unable to concentrate or recall much.

Equipment:
Chess Set – Niril’s most prized possession is his Chess Set. He won it at the age of nine in a riddles contest against the Philosophy professor at a very prestigious university. The pieces are carved out of Talymer and the board is made from a thinly hammered plate of Mythril on an Rywan Square. The pieces fit into cutouts on the back, lined with a very soft felt, and when folded up Niril keeps it in a case of Sifan Cloth. ((Although the materials make it very very expensive, the only mechanic that changes is Niril’s extreme possessiveness, as well as its value to thieves. It does nothing special.)) It is kept as clean and un-scathed as his clothes. He will never, under any circumstances sell it, trade it, or loan it. If it were stolen, he would travel to the ends of the earth to retrieve it.
((Future notes: I’m playing with the idea of it being magical, but those plot developments are still in Beta. Ideas would be appreciated!))

Knife – Every adventurer’s friend, just a basic stainless steel knife. Niril uses it mostly as a tool, but there have been situations where he has used it to scare off a would-be assailant. He has never actually harmed anyone with it, and would only use it as a weapon last-resort.

Bag – Part messenger’s bag, part backpack, it carries everything Niril needs. He had a special hidden sleeve stitched in to hide his Chess Set, but other than that it is just a canvas bag.

History:
Niril sat in his chair awkwardly. He was on his haunches, chin resting tenderly on his knee as he surveyed the battlefield. His troops were already mid-battle, and three units were currently engaged with the enemy. He bit his lip, surveying the next command.

There is a weak spot… He casually thought to himself. A trap?

He looked west. Yes, a trap. The cavalry was set to ride in. Excellent.

He grabbed his bishop and slowly pushed it forward, capturing a pawn. The grizzled old man’s next move determined the game. He chuckled, and captured Niril’s Bishop with his knight.

Some prodigy, kid… The professor thought, chuckling softly. He removed the fallen soldier from the battlefield. Gave me an open path right to his king.

He took the bait. Niril smiled. That chessboard was as good as his in six more turns. He pushed his rook a few spaces over, a soft sliding sound delivering it to it’s destination.

“Check.” The knight opened up his king.

The professor knew this was coming though, and retaliated by picking up a bishop, contemplating for a moment, and placing it back down in front of the rook.

As soon as the Professor removed his hand, Niril moved a pawn forward. This opened an oblique from his queen to the king. “Check.”

This complicated things, but not by much. The professor moved a pawn two spaces forward to block the queen.

Niril placed his pawn on the diagonal and removed his opponents pawn. “En passant. Check.”

The Professor only had one move. He moved his king away.

Next, Niril did something unexpected. He could have moved the queen, put it in protection from a knight and put him in check again. That would end in failure, however. Instead, he moved his pawn that last space. The professor began to fish out a queen, but Niril stopped him. “Bishop…”

“What?” The professor asked, rather shocked looking.

“I want… a bishop.” Niril clarified. The professor laughed at him, and placed a bishop on the board. He then moved the original knight to capture a rook. It was fine.

Niril pushed the queen over a few spaces. This was it, the old man was dead.

“Check…”

The Professor’s gaze widened. “That’s… impossible…” He sensed the end. He moved his king to the only open space, and he knew that Niril’s queen would follow him.

It did. “Checkmate.”

The room was silent for a full fifteen seconds. Then it erupted into applause. The professor was unthreatened by the bishop that now protected the queen checkmating his king. It was a first class deception. Had he have made it a queen, the professor would have never taken the rook. Niril went out on a limb by taking the professor’s aggression and overconfidence into play, but it payed off… he had won the war.

Rations all around… he thought. These men deserve it…

Hey, sorry for the delay. I'm going to ask that you split up the skills and everything to put a space between them, they're incredibly hard to read at this time.

For the basic spells, please have it so that the ones listed are the only ones you can currently use. Also, the knife needs to be steel or iron.

Althanas Mods are people too, you probably have stuff to do. It's okay.

I made the re-organizational changes and steelified the knife, so hopefully we're good.

Looks fine. Just be careful not to powergame the intelligence and see attacks and stuff before they happen in fights and whatnot. That'd just not be cool. Haha.

Approved.
