Isabella

On a quiet night,
as I lay still,
on the wall,
a shadow,
its becoming too real.
Odd forms they start
to surround me
With a scream,
I begin to flee
thru a dark
and a howling
most frightful night...
On a quiet night,
as I lay very still,
On the wall,
shadows,
they’re becoming too real…
The late afternoon sunlight was slowly fading away behind the tree line when Isabella opened her eyes. The cloth of her dress felt warm and slightly moist with sweat against her naked body. She knew she had slept away most of the afternoon on the old giant oak tree stomp that stood by itself in the grassy field between her village and the forest’s entrance. Isabella loved her sleeping spot. She felt as though it gave her enough space from the noisy village life she dealt with everyday to clear her head. Isabella also realized that sleeping outside next to the forest protected her from her nightmare.
She rolled on her back feeling the ridges of the age rings from the massive stump. Ever since she was a little girl, Isabella would count the rings and wonder how much larger the five hundred year old tree would have grown if her village had spared its life to create their own homes.
She stared up at the ever-darkening sky and watched the tree tops sway in the light breeze. Isabella soaked in the sun’s rays and the calm world around her, ignoring the voice in her head telling her it was time to get home for dinner. She laid there for another hour watching as the last light of the sun sparkled only to be swallowed up by the dense forest next to her. Isabella sat up and looked in the direction of her home. With a hesitance, she stepped off the stump. The grass felt warm and soft between her naked toes as she took a few steps away from her make-shift bed.
“Hello Isabella.” A sickening familiar voice said in a calm manner behind her. She stopped dead in her tracks and closed her eyes.
No, I need to wake up. Wake up… She told herself as she turned to place the voice with the face she already knew. Standing confidently smug atop her once resting spot was a pale human-like creature dressed in a jet black hooded ritualistic full-bodied robe. His long white hair almost seemed to dance as a small gust of wind came through the tree, and his dark green eyes pierced her stare.
The story of a vampire snatching girls from villages lined along the forest ran through her head. Many times she had faced him in her dreams as he chased her through the forest. Taunting her making sure she knew that he was in control at every turn. She closed her eyes again. Wake up….
“No ma’am you don’t get away that easily. You know my rules.” She heard his feet leave the stump and felt the wind gust push against her body. The presence of his body inches away from her forced her to open her eyes. His glare caused a chill to run down her spine. He smiled revealing his overgrown canines. “I’m going to enjoy this.” He said with a slight laughter in his voice.
A feeling of dread came over Isabella.
Please…..wake up….
