On a quiet night,
as I lay still,
on the wall,
a shadow,
its becoming too real.
Odd forms they start
to surround me
With a scream,
I begin to flee
thru a dark
and a howling
most frightful night...

On a quiet night,
as I lay very still,
On the wall,
shadows,
they’re becoming too real…

The late afternoon sunlight was slowly fading away behind the tree line when Isabella opened her eyes. The cloth of her dress felt warm and slightly moist with sweat against her naked body. She knew she had slept away most of the afternoon on the old giant oak tree stomp that stood by itself in the grassy field between her village and the forest’s entrance. Isabella loved her sleeping spot. She felt as though it gave her enough space from the noisy village life she dealt with everyday to clear her head. Isabella also realized that sleeping outside next to the forest protected her from her nightmare.

She rolled on her back feeling the ridges of the age rings from the massive stump. Ever since she was a little girl, Isabella would count the rings and wonder how much larger the five hundred year old tree would have grown if her village had spared its life to create their own homes.

She stared up at the ever-darkening sky and watched the tree tops sway in the light breeze. Isabella soaked in the sun’s rays and the calm world around her, ignoring the voice in her head telling her it was time to get home for dinner. She laid there for another hour watching as the last light of the sun sparkled only to be swallowed up by the dense forest next to her. Isabella sat up and looked in the direction of her home. With a hesitance, she stepped off the stump. The grass felt warm and soft between her naked toes as she took a few steps away from her make-shift bed.

“Hello Isabella.” A sickening familiar voice said in a calm manner behind her. She stopped dead in her tracks and closed her eyes.

No, I need to wake up. Wake up… She told herself as she turned to place the voice with the face she already knew. Standing confidently smug atop her once resting spot was a pale human-like creature dressed in a jet black hooded ritualistic full-bodied robe. His long white hair almost seemed to dance as a small gust of wind came through the tree, and his dark green eyes pierced her stare.

The story of a vampire snatching girls from villages lined along the forest ran through her head. Many times she had faced him in her dreams as he chased her through the forest. Taunting her making sure she knew that he was in control at every turn. She closed her eyes again. Wake up….

“No ma’am you don’t get away that easily. You know my rules.” She heard his feet leave the stump and felt the wind gust push against her body. The presence of his body inches away from her forced her to open her eyes. His glare caused a chill to run down her spine. He smiled revealing his overgrown canines. “I’m going to enjoy this.” He said with a slight laughter in his voice.

A feeling of dread came over Isabella.

Please…..wake up….

Isabella stepped back and tried to run as the creature snatched her wrist with his cold rough hands. She attempted to pull her arm away, but with ease he pulled her closer to him. With his other hand he reached up and ran his sharpened nail across her cheek causing a small slash along her skin. She winced as the paper-like cut burned with the touch of air.

“Such soft tan skin, such beauty that can easily be taken away.” He whispered to her as if he were talking to a long time lover. She struggled to loosen his grip with no success.

“Ah but what is this?” He ran his nail across her cheek again. “Your heart weeps for me with its crimson tears.” He pulled his hand away so Isabella could see the blood covering the tip of his finger, then placed it upon his lips, savoring the smell. Please wake up!!! Stop this now! She pleaded inside herself. His grip tightened on her wrist as his tongue tasted her sweet blood.

“Just as I had imagined you would taste my dear.”

Isabella reached down with her free hand in an attempt to grab her dagger from her waist, but the creature quickly slammed his fist into her cheek allowing the full strength of his arm to release into her. Her body flew back and crashed into the ground on her back. Pollen from the grass and flowers puffed into the air around her and gently settled back down around her. The impact left Isabella gasping for breath as the pain throbbed in her cheek.
She could see the stars starting to form in the dusk sky above her. The vampire kneeled down beside her and smiled. Isabella reached down again for her dagger as the creature grabbed her wrist and twisted it to the side. She left out a yell as pain shot up her arm.

“Now now Isabella, there’s no reason to fight with me.” He said with a slight laughter in his voice.

“GO TO HELL!” She screamed at him. He twisted her arm more forcing her on her side.

“Now why would I go there unless I had a friend come along? Are you free for a trip?” He whispered in her ear. She could feel his breath on her neck. Her heartbeat began to race as the warm air moved closer to her skin.
WAKE UP! WAKE UP! ISABELLA WAKE YOURSELF THE HELL UP! His teeth cut through her skin with ease. She tried to scream, but the creature cupped her mouth with his cold hand. Isabella clawed at his hand and face in an attempt to fight off the attack.

He tightened his grip on her mouth and wrist digging his nails into her skin as he pulled the blood from her neck.
Isabella’s tan and warm body soon felt the effects of the blood loss and dimmed into a pale, cold figure. It was becoming more difficult to keep up the struggle for her freedom as her eyes began to get heavy. Something’s not right… Her eyes shot open when she realized then slowly closed again.

It’s not a…

Isabella’s body became limp and her mind went blank.

…Dream

Isabella could still feel the throbbing pain in her cheek from the attack. She knew her surroundings had changed from the soft, warm grass below her, to a cold stone floor pressing against her. A putrid smell invaded her nose cause her eyes to water and spring open. Isabella let out a blood curdling scream as the source of the smell revealed itself. Laying inches from her face she was met with the blank decaying stare of a young girl. Her skin had become ghost white with spots of black and blue where some blood had pooled under her skin. Her once red lips had changed to a sickening gray. The moonlight from a single window had made the body have a horrific aura around it.

The image caused Isabella to quickly sit up and rush backwards until her back was met with a hardened stone wall. The smell again came into her senses as she felt something soft next to her right shoulder. Her head quickly turned and was met again by a more rotting figure. She let out another scream and scurried to her left only to lose her gripping on the floor and fell into another corpse’s lap. The body hunched forward laying across Isabella’s chest. The room was filled with her uncontrollable screams as she pushed the heavy cold body off of her. She rolled away as the corpse crumbled into a heap of dust, rotting skin, and bones.

Isabella stumbled to her feet and looked around the room to see where she was. Her stomach began to ache as she only saw a single-barred window and a heavy wooden door trapping her in such a small room filled with decaying bodies. Her vision blurred as she realized the three corpses weren’t her only cell mates. She tried focusing her eyes from the moonlight on the terrible scene in front of her. Isabella could make out about ten bodies all at different stages of decomposition.

Her knees began to shake and gave out causing her to collapse to the floor. She closed her eyes to try and rid her mind of where she was, but the faces and bodies of the dead girls kept flashing over and over again. Isabella’s stomach started to churn and her head became heavy on her shoulders. Tears filled her eyes as she felt her body heave forward. She opened her eyes and began throwing up as she realized the most terrifying part of the room wasn’t the dead girls, but was that they all resembled each other so much; resembled her so much. Her body was sore from the fight and the stress put on her body from heaving and she felt it in every bone as she laid on her back staring out the window and crying to herself.

Isabella let out a final scream filled with anger, hatred, but most of all fear.

The vampire sat staring into the roaring fireplace in front of his leather chair. His gaze was mesmerized by the dancing flames as Isabella’s screams echoed down the stone hallways and flooded his ears.

“Ah, my pet awakens…”
