Marius finished eating his breakfast of eggs and fruit. He stacked the pewter plates on the counter that centered his house. His house was average for a resident of Evermore. It had two rooms, the larger one contained a giant oaken table in the middle, and a small counter against the northern side. A fireplace was centered on the eastern wing, with the coals held up a small pot. The walls were adorned with sea charts and paintings, and several swords were hung up from his various battles

Tightening his frock coat, Marius stepped out the door of his two room house. From outside his front door he could see the rest of the town of Evermore, all the way to the sea. His house resided on the margin between the town and the farmland.

He walked down the cobblestone path from the residential homes into the main of Evermore. Watching the slow transition from quite town to extravagant bayside. The wooden houses changed to stone as he made his way down the hill. Men carried swords instead of farm tools, and the sound of music could heard farther down.

“So tomorrow we set off.” Said Marius whispered to himself. “It’s going to be a good sail…”

The thought of sailing always made Marius erratic. It was his passion, and the excitement of setting sale was usually worth the sleeping on a rocking boat for months on end eating nothing but stew and biscuits.

He reached the docks, the main street of Evermore. Although small, the docks were where Evermore came to life. There were never the same people one day as the next. Sailors came and went leaving only stories behind as rumors in the local taverns. Performers graced the area with their ever amusing tricks. Marius especially enjoyed watching them, amazed at there passion for performance. The hustle and bustle of the docks were the most enjoyable thing to Marius. There was always a constant supply of information flowing around, most of which were rumors, but always interesting to here. There was no better way to get something done than here. Shops and businesses collected on the opposite side of the street, where any man could find anything, whether it be a ship, a animal, or a woman. Evermore’s docks did in fact precede itself though, being the reason why so many visitors would come from all over the place.

Marius walked along the harbor watching the boats moor and captains yell orders. He stopped, only for a minute, to watch a man play four instruments at once a tune he remembered from childhood. He watched along other men and women, enjoying the oddity of the scene. It was during times like this that Marius wanted to last forever. To him, the harbor encompassed everything he needed in life; he would like nothing more than to live there, sleep there, always watching the people.

The musician finished his song. Marius passed him a coin, as he continued walking. The sound of salesman rang always in his ears as he walked along the shops, managers yelling so-called deals him every step he took.

“Hey, shoes! Shoes! Looks like you could use some new ones!”

“Best Evermore cheese here! We’ve got all kinds of cheese!”

“Hey you! You sir! You look like a strong man, why not try out my new axe design”

He spotted his ship down the way, the Starla. He admired it, the small ketch floating peacefully in the water; the ship given to him by his father, and created by his grandfather. He made his way over there, ignoring everything else. Men were carrying cases to and from the ship, loading it for departure. Just outside the plank were some men talking. Marius recognized them as Owen, his overseer and Daj, his first mate.

“Taking my job again are ya?” Marius called with a grin on his face.

“I shouldn’t have to if you were here to do it yourself!” Laughed Daj. He was a tall dark skinned man, bony but muscular, with short fine hair.

They met, and all shook hands.

“So, Owen, your back finally from Serenti.”

“Yes, the bastards of CAF are driving us hard since that meet up with the rangers in southern seas. Damn this war.”

“I don’t bother with politics.” Added Daj

“Nor I. Getting these supplies to Sherapo is more than enough for my plate.” Responded Marius.

“On that note. Where do we stand Mr. Dhuoda?” Said Owen getting back to business.

“Daj?” Marius said with a rugged face.

Daj, now standing attention, looks at a large piece of paper scribbled over several times with names and dates.

“Forty two wool. Sixteen jar perfume. Three oxen. Ten jar quite good wine, loaded SIR!” He said trying to keep a straight face. “Two men astray SIR. Added two supplementary women to your cabin SIR!”

They all laughed.

“Okay, I must go. I have a meeting with the Naval Officer.” Said Owen. “Oh, damn, I almost forgot.”

Marius was handed a stack of letters neatly bound by a string.

Owen left mumbling on about the war.

“From the Mayor.” Said Marius.

“The Mayor needs us?”

“Think we can deliver?”

“He’s no different than any other man were transporting for.”

“The rich in this town all have to be so damn extravagant.”

“You should be glad. Without them you’d have no work.”

“I hate it when your right.”

A small trickle of rain started falling. Immediately the performers and salesman packed up their supplies and left.

“Damn this weather” Marius said, staring at the sky.

“I think it’s quite nice.”

“You were saying something about two men?”

“Yes, two are gone.”

“Missing?”

“Yes, they were signed on to the books two weeks ago and haven’t shown.”

“We’ll have to find some at the swarm.”

“The swarm indeed. You shouldn’t worry, its been a dead season, there’ll be plenty of capable men.”

“Oh, I’m sure of it.” Looking at his papers. “Work to do though. You can continue playing captain for now.”

“Will do.”
