Have any of you seen this yet? Wow. It's really quite a phenomenal movie. For me, it had a twofold impact.

One, I grew up on this book, and so seeing it brought to life, and watching Max on his journey, it took me back to when I was that age.

Two, I have an almost six year old, and that kid in the movie reminded me so much of him. I admit it, I cried.

So, my question is, do you, like so many of the whiny parents out there, think this movie was too scary and inappropriate for children? I won't take Aidan, but I don't think at the moment that he would really understand what was going on, and would just get up and run all over the theater. It has nothing to do with being scary though - I think scary isn't bad sometimes.

Never grew up with the book, but the monsters were iconical enough that I recognized them in the previews.

I'm not seeing the movie and I probably never will. I would if the monsters were being poached and the kid was forced to watch them being hunted to extinction.

I've got a dark taste in humor, what can I say.

This is scary? I grew up watching animes with my dad like Vampire Hunter D and other violent shit starting at the age of 4. I never understood any of it at the time and it terrified me, but I have a much higher tolerance for this stuff. Personally, if parents are this worried about letting kids go see anything outside the realm of vanilla, they completely deserve whatever spineless, short-sighted desk jockey they're raising.

I heard it was fantastic though I haven't gotten around to seeing it, and may not until its out on DVD. I adored the story when I was a child. It's always been a bit of a downer but isn't that the whole point?

Young children might not fully grasp it, but I think most can benefit from something that isn't sugary pablum...

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I plan to at some point. For the reasons you mentioned more or less.

Do I think it's too scary? For really REALLY young kids, yes. But come on, there's been far worse and more edgy movies than this that were marked as "children's movies" that shouldn't have been. Besides, unless their parents are checking what they watch on TV constantly, I'm sure they've seen scarier on TV.

I think for me, the question is WHY is it scary? Is it bloody, gory, violent? No. It's scary because he's a little boy who is experience strong emotions, and going through a scary time in life. His parents are divorced, his sister thinks she's too grown up to do anything with him, his mom is dating someone and he's jealous. He's lonely and angry and when he escapes to his fantasy world, he learns that even there, things aren't perfect. It's scary, but it's only because it's so very real. Truth is a scary thing. And if parents are afraid for their children to see the truth, but are okay with them watching the crap on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon... wow.
