Spread about his body are dark spots beneath his ivory skin from where stone is beginning to rise, in some places surfacing such as the cheekbone beneath his right eye as well as the vertebrae along his spine.
Galen has become annoyed with the stares he gets and so he tries to wear clothes that conceal his special features. To this end he wears a floor length leather trench coat that he leaves unbuttoned, dark blue and slightly faded. He wears light grey cotton pants that are very loose and appear fluffed, increasing their visual volume. He wears dark brown leather boots that extend to just above the ankle. History
Galen Starstrangler grew up in north Salvar as an orphan. His parents had originally been of a tribal clan that migrated around the ice-fields following packs of mammoth that they lived off of. The tribe’s people were extremely superstitious and believed heavily in natural signs, the readings of the stars, the guidance of higher beings, the intelligence of animals, and they created signals or signs from every natural occurrence saying that it was a prophesy or direction from the gods. When Galen was born, the constellation of stars that the elders believed represented their tribe, vanished. They took it as a prophesy, that Galen marked the ending of the tribe and that his birth had somehow offended the gods. To make repentance to the gods, the tribe demanded Galen from his parents to be sacrificed. When they tried to resist and flee, they were cut down, but they did manage to hide Galen from the tribe.
Any other child would have perished from the elements, but Galen held on long enough to be found by another tribe. The second tribe that found him had actually been the sworn enemies of his original tribe, a blood feud that spanned centuries, and they came to know of his birth. It was they who gave him his last name, Starstrangler, and they raised him to be a leader of their tribe to destroy their enemy, his enemy.
Galen grew up without the comfort of true family, supported by the village but never truly accepted. It was just as well, he learned of what happened to his old tribe and how this one was nearly identical, he saw the errors in their ways and their misguided beliefs. He could feel that there was real deities, something that had watched over him, but he knew it was not what the tribe believed. He eventually became detached from them, leaving them at the age of 12 to travel south and gain space from their crude practices.
In the south he learned of many things. He learned of religions, of the art of war, the magics, he learned of the diversity that composed a world he could never have imagined. He took a great interest in many things, particularly those of religion and magic. He quickly learned as much as he could from anyone that he could. He learned from preachers in cathedrals, traveling monks, powerful court magicians, slight-of-hand street performers, everything from anywhere. The language barrier was difficult at first, but he was young and adapted easily and quickly.
Five years later, Galen found himself the apprentice of a traveling alchemist. The alchemist, Roth Demetry, was a mentor to Galen. He let Galen travel with him and trained him in many disciplines and in exchange Galen collected ingredients and let Roth test new formulas on him. Some turned out quite badly; temporary paralysis, blindness, loss of taste, loss of hair, to name the least harmful, and others helped him quite a bit, making him stronger or fixing ailments from previous tests.
At the age of 16, Roth was in need of an extremely rare and dangerous ingredient. He needed to get the eye of a basilisk, and while this normally would have been folly for all but the most powerful of wizards, he believed he had a solution. To this end, he created a potion that was suppose to give immunity to petrifaction and it worked, somewhat. Galen managed to find a basilisk, by no use of reason or sense whatsoever, and he took the potion and proceeded to attack the basilisk. When the basilisk turned its petrifying gaze on him, Galens was unharmed. Confident with the success, he charged forward and attempted to bring the beast down. At this point the beast tried to bite him, its teeth brutally raking against his arms. Because almost no one has ever lasted beyond the gaze, it was unknown to all that basilisks have a more powerful petrifying agent in their teeth, to which the potion was unable to resist completely. Almost immediately after contact, Galen’s arms turned to stone, but animated stone. He was still able to move them, but now they turned into solid black obsidian appendages. Still under attack by the basilisk, Galen tried to defend against the attack by restraining the basilisk and deflecting its blow, in doing so he grabbed its head and miraculously broke its neck.
Blaming Roth for causing him to become a monstrosity, as that is what he saw it as at the time, Galen killed Roth in a fit of rage. Later he realized what he had done, but by then he had stopped caring. The way people treated him made him bitter and angry, they treated him as less than human, lower than dirt. The common people feared magic, they couldn’t understand it and so they feared the results, but when the results were separate from the source, they reviled them, found them as atrocities against nature.
Galen would prove them wrong, he would make them see that he wasn’t some horrible atrocity, and if they couldn’t be made to see, he would kill them. They would either accept him as he was, or he would become the vile thing they feared so much.
