View Full Version : Angela Battersby

Golem Girl
12-08-09, 09:58 AM
Name: Angela “Angie” Battersby

Race: Human

Age: 28

Gender: Female

Hair Color: Red

Height: 5'5"

Weight: 132 lb

Language: Tradespeak

Occupation: Golemancer

Physical Description: Most frequently, Angie's hair, body, and clothing are caked with a thin layer of dirt. Working with golems and in the earth is, obviously, not the cleanest occupation to choose. Her fiery red hair is most frequently tied up in a ponytail. Her eyes are large and a dark shade of green. She is fairly short and small, but despite this also quite muscular. Working with machines and using a warhammer in battle do require some amount of physical strength. She is in top physical condition and is very careful about eating properly and getting enough exercise, even when holed up in a library and studying.

She never worries too much about physical appearances, and wears clothing that would most often be thought suitable for a man. Her typical outfit consists of thick, baggy tan overalls and a puffy white shirt underneath. Around her waist, she wears a tight cloth belt, giving her the impression of a small woman wearing very baggy pants and shirt...exactly the truth. She has a tan leather cap tht she wears at all times, with a broad brim and goggles that can be moved down onto her eyes or sit on top of her head. She has good vision, but the goggles protect her eyes from sand and dirt getting in them. She carries a sidebag with various tools and implements in it, as well as items of day to day life.

Personality: Extroverted to an extreme, Angela does what she wants to do and rarely worries what anyone thinks of her. She’s loud, sometimes obnoxious, and always outgoing and charismatic. She would be a natural born leader, except for her tendency to alienate people with brutal honesty. If she doesn’t like someone, she’ll be happy to tell them that and explain exactly why they annoy her so. She has a ferocious temper and is not opposed to using violence to get her way, if necessary. In addition to all this, she is extremely bright and knows it—making her more than a little bit arrogant. Despite all this, she is at her core good hearted and cares greatly about the few friends she makes. She would never lie (sometimes even to a fault) and has nothing but disgust for people who steal from or injure innocents.

Weapons:

Hammer of Ragnhilder: Angie's favored weapon is a large hammer kept slung around her back. The shaft (taken off a dismantled mace) is wooden with a cloth grip, about two feet long, while the head of the hammer itself is iron and nearly a foot wide. Normally such a hammer would be unwieldy and heavy due to its size, but the Hammer of Ragnhilder has been passed through generations of Golemancers and is heavily enchanted. To the wielder, assuming they are descended from the Ragnhilder bloodline (which Angie is, despite having her father's last name) the hammer only seems to weight five pounds, while to any other bearer it would seem to weigh fifteen. The hammer can, thus, be wielded in similar manner to a slightly heavy shortsword or longsword.

Armor: n/a. Angie uses her magic to protect herself.

Skills:

Above Average Hammer Mastery: Angie is more skilled with the warhammer than the average untrained peasant, but not much more so. She could not go up face-to-face against a trained soldier, even if she wished to do so. She still finds hand-to-hand combat cumbersome and unwieldy, and tries to avoid it when possible.

Spellcrafter: Angie knows a few Earth Magic spells for defending herself and other various mundane tasks. These are listed and described below, in the "Spells" section. On top of this, as a spellcrafter she has a respectable knowledge--if not understanding--of arcana and magic in general. The areas where magic and machinery cross are her realm of expertise, but she has a very basic understanding of other types of magic as well. For instance, while she could never craft a weather magic spell herself, or use runes to cast a spell; she understands the basic concept of weather magic and can read runestones, if not use them.

Apprentice Mechanic: Everything from the impossibly complex Golems, to the (relatively) simple machines of catapults, to the more intricate designs of dungeon traps and treasure chest locks, she has been trained in. However, without a proper workshop, an enormous amount of help, and probably a few books on the subject, she could not construct most of these things on her own. Despite this fact, given some amount of time to examine a broken machine and try to understand it, she can usually fix it, or at least improvise imprvise a makeshift solution given the tools she has access to.

Golemcrafting: While Golemancy technically falls under the Mechanic skill also, it deserves its own description.

A Golem is any creature, formed of earth, wood, or even flesh, animated by a spellcaster and sent to do its bidding. The sort of golem Angie grew up around was exclusively made of clay, stone, or dirt. Such golems varied in size from tiny golem mice, to golem horses, to human-like golems, even extending all the way to huge battle-golems. Creating a golem could take days, months, or even years, depending on its complexity and the skill of the crafter. The first time Angie constructed her familiar, a relatively simple golem named Bok, it took her nearly an entire year. Once a golem is created, however, if it is destroyed it can be remade much more easily or disbanded and summoned at will.

Angela is not yet skilled enough to create her own golems without the help and supervision of a golemancer master.

Spells:

For Angie at this point, spellcasting is a tiring and exacting process. She can only at most cast one spell per post, and even so, if she is required to cast many spells one after another she is bound to get tired out. Resting for a short while can recover her strength, but in a long drawn out battle this is frequently just not an option. Thus, she prefers to finish off battles quickly and cleanly, before she is forced to use too many of her spells.

Earth's Shield:
Spellcasting Duration: Shield of Earth takes five seconds to cast.
Spell Duration: Shield of Earth lasts until Angie disbands it.
Spellcasting Frequency: Once per post.
[i]Spell Description: After muttering a few magic words, the ground in front of Angie rises up and takes the form of a one foot wide shield. This shield is similar in density to a wooden buckler, and can be pierced or crushed with the same amount of force it would take to destroy a wooden shield. It is not, however, vulnerable to fire. Angie can move this shield (using her mind) anywhere within a foot radius of her body.

Earth's Arrow:
Spellcasting Duration: Almost instantaneous; as long as it takes to make the movements and say the words.
Spell Duration: (irrelevant, see spell description)
Spellcasting Frequency: Once per post.
Spell Description: Angie stomps the ground, hard, and mutters the spell's words. A boulder, or really a rock, about half a foot across and 5-10 lbs in weight, shoots out of the ground in front of her and flies at her enemy as though slung from a slingshot.

Earth's Dominion:
Spellcasting Duration: Instantaneous
Spell Duration: (irrelevant, see spell description)
Spellcasting Frequency: Once per post.
Spell Description: Angie transmogrifies an amount of water, equal to or less than in volume of one gallon, into sand. This cannot be used on bodily fluids (e.g. blood) or impure liquids, and cannot be used at all unless she is touching the water in question. She considers this spell to be basically useless, although it was the first one she learned.

Earth's Children:
Spellcasting Duraion: One entire post
Spell Duration: Until destroyed or disbanded.
Spellcasting Frequency: In Battle threads, once per thread. In normal Quest threads, once per day.
Spell Description: Angie draws a circle in the dirt or dust beneath her feet. She inscribes it with a few key symbols, and mutters the words. A small homunculus (technically not a golem) formed out of clay or dirt rises up out of the circle. Its appearance is that of a roughly made clay doll in the form of a human child. It is without sex or feature, and stands approximately two feet tall. It will do Angie's verbal bidding until its destruction or she decides to disband it. Maintaining the Earth Child requires an enormous amount of energy, and if she is forced to maintain it for a long period of time (more than three or four posts in a battle thread, including the opponent's) she will quickly become worn out and will be forced to let it return to its Mother Earth.

Familiar: Angie's familiar is a small homonculus named Bok. Bok is a small creature made of earth, two and a half feet tall, without any gender or real facial features. It has a rough nose, two indents where eyes should be, and a small line drawn for a mouth. He has two toes and three fingers on each hand. He follows her everywhere. Bok cannot speak. It is similar in form and function to the Earth's Children, but sturdier and permanent. It obeys Angie's verbal commands to the best of its abilities. The primary difference between Bok and the Earth's Children is not physical but mental. Bok actually has some amount of personality, as alien to us as it may seem. He is fiercly loyal to Angie, more so than any dog, and would glady die for her. He cannot, however, truly die. If he is destroyed (something that happens on occasion) she can reform him from the earth given about a day of work without interruption. She is constantly looking for ways to improve his form, however; as of now he is not really useful in battle, or anywhere except for very mundane sorts of tasks. Maintaining Bok does not use energy; he is a familiar, not a spell.

Inventory:

In her bag, Angela carries the following items:
- Steel Hammer and Iron Nails
- Iron Wrench
- Iron Screwdriver
- Pouch of Dirt
- Canteen of Water

History:

Angela was born to a long line of Golemancers and Earth Mages in the heart of the desert of Fallien. Her father was a renowned Golemancer, descended from the great Golemancer Ragnhilder. In her family, it was traditional that girls not learn magic. They were simply expected to carry on the family line, and become housewives and the like. Angie, however, showed aptitude and interest so her father decided to teach her a few elementary spells. When he refused to go further, Angie decided to teach herself. She secretly observed the education of her brothers and her father and quickly picked up what they were doing. Her self-education culminated in the creation of her familiar, Bok.

Unfortunately, at this point her family discovered what she had been doing. Enraged at how she was overstepping her boundaries, they gave her an ultimatum: stop practicing magic, or leave the house. She chose the latter and became an adventurer, attempting to teach herself the intricacies of magic, or to find a tutor willing to help her learn…

Ok. I love the character. Gotta start off with that.

I just need to know what metal the hammer and nails, wrench, screwdiver are all made of (steel is fine for those).

Other than that, I am fine with what abilities you have listed as they are. You've put in enough effort in balancing the better abilities with weaknesses, so that is kudos to you.
