Declan Lastar
07-26-06, 01:31 PM
Name: Declan Lastar
Age: 18
Race: Scarabrian Human
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Hazel
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 180 lbs
*Occupation: Adventurer, reluctanct apprentice mage

*Personality:
Declan is a warm and friendly guy, at least on the surface. Inside he has a certain level of wanderlust and frustration, which has recently come to a boil. (see History) Having just turned 18, his personality is still forming, as he has led a sheltered life on Scara Brae and thus does not quite know who he is or what he is about. At times he can be rash, at times he can be indecisive, as with any teenager.

Having led a quiet life, Declan is very naïve, as he lacks the worldly experience of a seasoned adventurer. He is therefore very gullible and easy beguiled, and may at times comes across as book-smart but with little ‘common sense.’ He is likeable and trustworthy.

Appearance: .
There is nothing about Declan that leaps out at anyone looking at him on first glance; he appears to be a well-fed, well-dressed young man. He is neither very handsome nor heinously ugly. He was neither the most popular jock nor the class pariah, just a very average fellow. Girls don’t instantly gravitate towards him; guys don’t want to be him. On the other hand, no one sizes him up as a target or picks on him, either: the first impression you have is of a truly average guy.

Those with mystic or psionic abilities will be able to confirm that he is as he appears to be; he is ordinary right down to the bone.

History: Declan is not quite sure where he was born, as his father never talks about. However, what he does know is that at the age of 3 or 4 or so, his father got a job working for Queen Valeena in Scara Brae and moved the entire family there, and so for the last dozen years Declan has lived a quiet and ordinary life He has never wanted for food or drink, has dated his share of girls from serving wenches to minor noble debutantes, and he has one of the finest book educations you can get. . . but every season Declan sees budding adventurers come and go, passing through Scara Brae on their way to greater adventures in far-off lands, and he has finally reached the point where his desire to find out about the world (and himself) has eclipsed the safety and security of his pampered existence. For two years he has debated with himself whether to stay or go, and now, at long last, Declan has finally decided this is his time to shine.

Recent History:
Declan was hired by a mage named Brugh who desired a Scara Brae local to serve as a native tour-guide/guard while in the area. They traveled to Livol Sanctum, a small island off the north shore of Scara Brae, but the quest eventually ended badly, and the mage died. Declan inherited his ring and spellbook from the mage, along with his quest to better himself and to travel the world, as he attempts to redeem his failure to help save the mage.

The long-lived Brugh may have had friends/enemies/relatives in other lands, so this is an open hook for other characters and moderators, as Brugh was rumored to have vast wealth and power at his disposal.

Skills:
1) Basic sword fighting. A bit of fencing, a bit of swordplay, in keeping with what a minor noble might have; nothing extragavant, as that is what hired mercenaries are for. Not really adept at it.
2) Basic magic. EDIT: No spells to start with. I'm going to roleplay his learning them, but he does have the spellbook of the Archmage Brugh, written in an ancient language.
3) Court etiquette and courtesy—not sure if this is a skill per se, but one function of his particular history would be to give Declan a certain man of diplomacy and oration ability, in keeping with someone being trained as a courtier.
4) Lucky—sometimes luck is just a matter of paying attention, knowing when to show up, when to be quiet and when to open your mouth. Castle life can at times be ruthless as far as backstage intrigue, and Declan has learned how to maximize his luck.

Equipment:
As per his background, Declan should start with some extra gold, perhaps 50 or 100 more, whatever is allowed. Beyond standard equipment, he would have fashionable linen and silk outfits, a ceremonial broadsword, a mostly empty spell book, and had recently purchased an adventuring kit: ropes, pitons, lantern, backpack, etc.

Magic Ring: Declan has a magic ego-ring. It’s all the fashion now. You can tell it’s magic because it glows with a light blue aura, and it has all sorts of runes and astrological symbols on it. The ring also will tell anyone that asks that it’s a magic ring, and whenever anything good happens to Declan, the ring will take the credit. “It’s a good thing you were wearing me, Declan, or that might have been a disaster!”

Powers: Oh please. A real magic ring doesn’t need to ‘do’ anything. It’s just enough, in it’s own opinion, to announce that it might. The ring often boasts that it can do just about anything a situation will demand. It has also given Declan 5 different origin stories, the most believable being that it was an inept sorceror that squared off against the wizard Brugh and is now trapped in ring form as it lacks the fingers and mouth to cast a reversal spell.

*Familiars: A familiar is a minor adventuring companion, usually a small animal, demon, or humanoid of some sort. This section may be skipped if you do not have one.

No NPCs at this time.

Ok, so far the only actual feedback I've gotten is this, so this is what I will address:

Just a quick tip, Scara Brae speaks Tradespeak which is equivalent to Common for your postbit fields. Also you should detail your spells, spell book and sword a bit more with the latter just saying it's made of iron or steel. That'll probably get you through faster, welcome to the place where anything goes, why look at me!

The sword is crafted of iron from the Windlancer Mountain Range. It is a family heirloom, and has a red halo decorating the scabbard as proof of its Scara Brae origins. EDIT: originally wielded by Declan's Uncle, a Scare Brae knight. ( Domi Arigoto, Osato-san)

The spell book is crimson and emblazoned with glyphs of a long forgotten civilization. It was a gift from a mage whom Declan had befriended. The mage Brugh was a wise and powerful man, who spent many decades up in his high tower studying the mystic arts, so much so that he was ranked as one of the top ten wizards of his particular sphere of magic. Brugh has many friends, enemies and relatives scattered across the land. (Mods and other players are welcome to create these NPCs, or not, as they like. This is just for storytelling purposes as people can seek out Declan to help or hurt him, to being quests and battles, etc.)

One day he was aided by Declan in an attempt to visit Liviol Sanctum and obtain a rare arcane reagent rumored to be among the ruins. The attempt was a failure, and the mage was overcome by dark forces. As he lay dying, he motioned for Declan to come closer. "For decades I have learned tricks and spells that defy imagination, but I was selfish with my learning and never took an apprentice. If only I had one now, together we might have triumphed. You are a kind and honest man, and so I pass my spell book on to you."

Declan shook his head. "No, I am not worthy. You hired me as a local guide and guard, and I have failed in my task. I can not accept."

"You did not fail, Declan. You did what I bid you to do." The old mage coughed, blood coming out of the corner of his mouth. "It was my own arrogance that did me in. I lived a sheltered life in my tower, and thought I was invincible because I wielded tremendous power. . ." His head lolled to one side.

"Master Brugh! Hold on, I will go get help!" Declan shook the shoulders of the mage.

"No, no, it is too late for me. I have already lived three lifetimes, and the magicks that bind my soul to this decaying form are already loosening. Please. . . take the book. But do not make the same mistake I did. Do not live your life just here on Scara Brae." The mage clutched at his heart. "Go. . . see the world. Make friends. Don't-- don't be like me, trying to do it all by myself. Promise me. . . " Brugh shivered, his arms and legs spasming. "Promise me that you will take my spellbook and see the world. Use the knowledge. . . to make the world a better place, to make up for our folly today."

Declan nodded, a solemn look on his face. "I can not refuse the request of a dying man. I promise."

* * *

It was only later, three days after the funeral, that Declan opened the book and realized that it was not in a language he understood.

Looks good, for future reference it's easiest just to edit your history and background info into one simple post instead of posting two, but it's fine.

As my first approved character I bestow upon you.... A stamp of Approval!

Go! Flourish! And be merry!
