Requiem of Insanity

The desert lands were an extraordinarily dull place for Cassandra Remi. It was always hot, it was always smelly, and it never ever changed. She couldn’t fathom why anyone would ever go to these plains to actually live, nothing but sand as far as the eye could see. Yet she couldn’t really complain, not everyone was like her.

Cassandra Remi was a serial killer, a devious one at that. She enjoyed very much the lifestyle of hunting a prey, making him scream, and torturing the very soul of her afflicted victims. It was an art that few people had the time to appreciate, yet her travels did net one fanatical observer. It was this fan of her art that caused her to travel to the blasted desert lands.

The self proclaimed King of All was a mystery to the brunette; an enigma that took a deadly interest in her hobbies. He had left her clues and riddles for her to solve leading her towards a new playmate for her twisted midnight deeds, and each time she met one of his cronies she had experienced the cold embrace of death nearing her. These challenges gave Cassandra new life in her repetitive activities. She was no longer looking for petty crime lords, but now searching for bonafide sociopaths and sycophants. With her dark companion, her dark ambitions made manifest, at her side she took each challenge head on.

Her newest challenge was currently being stuck behind two rather large beasts of burden. Her nose lit on fire at the terrible odor of the creatures, the sweat they emitted nearly enough to knock her out. On several occasions she found her stomach trying to wretch her lunch back up her throat but she forced her body to remain calm. It was a rather expensive lunch.

To take her mind off the horrid stench she thought back about her riddle the King of All had left her. ’The Sandman, the Kingmaker, what next is in store? For our midnight monster, this next prey will be a chore. She’s a woman from your past, a memory that will forever last.’ She was confused by his words, but the King of All gave her one hint, a sentence that made Cassandra’s blood boil. ‘This little kitten wants to come home to see her mommy.’ That was his final clue, but Cassandra had already solved that part of the riddle with clarity.

About seven or so months ago Cassandra had just finished torturing a circus ring leader by the name Montague Montaj. She had managed to poison the majority of the town with a deadly concoction called the howling. It’s affects reverted the populace to an animalistic like state, and she had laughed at their savage ways.

It wasn’t funny when she had to run for her very life.

The remaining town who stayed out of the circus had managed to learn she was the mastermind and they hunted her down for several hours. She had cut herself upon a fallen tree log deeply, getting her wound infected as she dragged herself through the mud and rain to a small farm house where she hid. There she met a little girl named Hester, who she renamed Cat. The girl had fallen in love with Cassandra, thinking her to be her mother. She screamed, hollered, cried for her to take her away, but Cassandra just beamed her on the side of the head with the flat end of her sword and ditched her with her axe.

So it was Cassandra’s curiosity that made her wonder how the hell the King of All would be using Cat against her. She knew no other woman by the name that could fit the riddles and the more she thought about it the more she became enraged at the notion she would have to see the child again.

She felt a gentle hand upon her shoulder, cold and inviting as she felt her nerves settle down. Her Dark Companion whispered words into her ears of encouragement and love as she moved slowly down the local bazaar. She swooned at his words, feeling the love she felt for him empower her. Regardless of the situation at hand, Cassandra would be ready to take action.

She felt a small hand tug on her arm and she wretched her arm away as she turned to see a small child look up to her. It was a poor street urchin, a girl no more than eight. Her eyes were full of tears and she held out a hand to Cassandra to take. The serial killer narrowed her eyes down at the child, looking up and down the street to see what exactly was going on. Street Urchins usually worked in packs to better the odds. She swatted the hand away again but the child ran forward and hugged her leg tightly. Irritated Cassandra lifted her hands and scooped the child up by the armpits to look her in the face.

“What?” Cassandra said in a forced anger.

“Will you be my mommy?” the child asked. Cassandra listened to the words and her heart jolted as she felt her dark companion swirl into life around her, hissing in her ear. She gave the child a once over and began to shake the child in her hands. After a few moments a small bag of coins fell down at the girls feet.

Cassandra tossed the child to the side rather forcefully into a pile of hay, getting a few dirty looks from the adults on the street as she bent over and picked up the girls satchel of coins. She examined it carefully before pocketing it making the girl point to her and begin to cry.

“She’s taking my money! Theif! Theif!” Cassandra only rolled her eyes as she turned and began to walk again down the bazaar. A few adults began to walk forwards lifting up their hands to detain her, but her a howl of laughter filled her ears as her dark companion rose out from her, latching onto the darkness within their souls and filling them with dread.

While they couldn’t see what was happening they did feel a sense of terror as they looked to Cassandra and they all stopped dead in their tracks. Cassandra laughed at their pitiful attempts to detain her as she walked forwards and onwards towards the local hostel.

Using a kid to spark a memory…now the hunt gets interesting… Cassandra grinned.
