View Full Version : Forced Listening 3: Return of the Terrible Music
Okay, here's how this game works: You post a song (this works best if you can find a video), the next person listens to it and states their opinions about it. Then they post a song, the next person listens to it, etc.
Only two rules are; you have to listen to it all the way through, and don't post unless you're contributing. Please avoid posting shit like "Never Gonna Give You Up" too.
I'll start us off:

"No One Loves Me & Neither Do I" by Them Crooked Vultures
I liked it okay. I don't think I'd go out of my way to listen to it, though. Zook, however, on the other side of the room, seemed to be getting into it a lot more than I did.

"Dawn on a Funeral Day" by Tsunami Bomb
This game is about as popular as I expected.
I went into your song totally expecting to hate it - this is the 'Return of the Terrible Music', after all - but after I finished listening to it, I'd become an instant fan. The singer's got a memorable, endearing voice, the songwriting is tight and catchy, and I can already imagine myself seeing these guys live - I can tell that they'd be a lot of fun to see in concert. Do they have a certain album you'd recommend, Amanda? :o I seriously want to go pick one up now.

Very old school like intro, the singers voice would be better suited for advertising than singing. Kind of reminds me of Seven Mary Three or Tantric, but with more hardcore to them. After pulling my headphones out, I temporarily went deaf, since my headphones have no volume control. Couldn't understand half of what was sung.

LOL that song was hilarious! I loved it. I don't really know what else to say, except that it sounds like a fairly serious song until you listen to the lyrics, and then looooool.

"Waka Laka." Watch the video. :3
note: I listen to waka laka repeatedly when I am depressed. it is a surefire cure.

Ya know, Azumanga Daioh was never on my list of priorities for anime, but after seeing that video, I'll have to give it a gander. Also, Waka Laka is still without a doubt one of my favorite DDR songs ever. Nobody can be sad listening to that.
I wasn't going to do another Jonathan Coulton, but to keep up with the theme of very happy songs that make me smile on a bad day....

I like it and it's always fun, though I much prefer his Future Soon song: those lyrics speak to me and my codeine-induced hallucinations.
In keeping with ridiculous lyrics that make us smile, here's Flight of the Conchords:
Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wl_uQOABxg).
PS: I could probably fill this thread with every song by FotC and Stephen Lynch.
PPS: Stephen Lynch's 'Three Balloons' also speaks to me!
Ha! I also adore FotC, courtesy of Visla who had me listen to them for the first time. :D
I've seen a cross stitch done with this song in mind. So wonderful, and an absolutely justified fear.
Also, Amara: That song was from The Definitive Act, which was a wonderful album, and one of my favorites of all time. :3
I suppose I'll link to what Pandora is playing for me right now. <3

Quite a high speed little number. Brings to mind a few tracks that have completely evaded me insofar as their titles. Might look up some more from these guys.
Now for my contribution, a funky little number that plays nicely on the edge of the attention span. Video ain't for the easily squeamish though, so feel free to just listen.

The music isn't that bad, I suppose I'd like it (more) at night when chilling with friends. The video is just repulsing... but I suppose that's the goal of it, which makes it even worse in my opinion.
I listen to complete different music then the ones posted here, so I thought I'd post something new. Though it's basically the only number I have of Springsteen, I often enjoy the easy flow and appealing text of 'Streets of Philadelphia'.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTeBFmWsLIg
Never been a Springsteen fan. Of course, I'm really not in to rock or pop...the progressions are always too boring and simplistic for me. I've always been interested in opulent music that displays technical musical proficiency. Not really good for chilling out (or picking up chicks), but meh...

That was pretty epic. I'm definitely bookmarking that, it would be good writing music I think. Not anything I would normally listen to, but I definitely see what you mean by technical proficiency there, very well done. Kind of reminds me of Sonata Arctica, in a way, and that's a band I like a lot.
I suppose I'll post what I'm listening to right now: the new single by my one of my two favorite bands of all time: Gorillaz! The song features Bobby Womack and Mos Def too, and I like both of them very much.
"Stylo" by Gorillaz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEhUsdaTavw
Not what I expected from a Gorillaz song, but pretty damn good nonetheless. It's got a very chill vibe, which I like, but it doesn't sound quite as fresh as most of the stuff from Demon Days and the debut. While not one of their strongest songs, Stylo has me excited for the upcoming Gorillaz release - Plastic Beach, I think? Thanks for the share, Ulysses. :D
Since tax season is fast approaching...
"Dethharmonic" by Dethklok (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUg3PPi8I70)
I'm not a very big fan of that kind of stuff. It's not really a question of whether my tastes are hard enough - I like things like Killswitch Engage and Five Finger Death Punch, but I like the singer to be able to sing. Howard and Ivan do their share of screaming, but they also have very good singing voices when they choose to use them. This guy just growled the whole time - I couldn't even understand anything he said, other than the word 'dead' a bunch of times.
Alright, I'd like to share with you all a song. It's one of my favorites, and it got me through one of the hardest times of my life. It's entirely possible that I wouldn't be here today without it.
Just kidding. It's just a good song, give it a shot:

Nice! That's some solid rock right there, and that's kind of an awesome name for a band. I never heard of them before, so thanks. The only complaint I have is the guy's voice is a bit...well it's good, it's just not really exceptional I guess? I dunno. It was good, though.
And lemme see, what do I want to post here? Oh yeah! How about something off the (infamous?) Grey Album. Watch the video too, it's pretty awesome.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Grey Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zJqihkLcGc)
Classic track Ulysses, I love that album, fortunately I managed to get a copy when it was out although I'm sure you can get it easy enough via certain sources nowadays. I have to confess, I am a monumentally big Beatles fun, and hip-hop to boot? Love it!
Let's swing back to some proper rock, with one my newly discovered but already favourite bands (they knocked Sublime from my Top 5!)

Wow, this is one of the most depressing things I've ever heard/seen. I don't mind the sound of the band, but it very strongly reminds me of the music that our youth pastor would play at church camp when I was a kid. The end, with everyone in capsules a la Minority Report made me laugh.
Here's Tracktor Bowling - Po steklu (http://www.youtube.com/watch#v=SzxCfgPqQoE&feature=related)
I love this song so hard that it makes me rage. Why does it have to be so impossible to get Russian CDs here in America? TT________TT

Didn't understand a word, and yet that didn't do a single solitary thing to impede my enjoyment of it. It had a great rhythm, and if I knew the language, it probably would've been better.
Here's a woman that has one of the best voices I've ever heard.

Well, sadly, I can't agree with "one of the best voices" because I've heard many indie/folk women, not to mention several hip-hop, who stomp the voice right out of that chicks box.
I wasn't sure if this forum was for bad music, or good... So I'll just toss an alright one up there, middle?!
Theophilus London- Humdrum Town (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2jBlPml7N4)
Well, I thought that I would hate this, based only on the name. It sounded like it would be convoluted scene kid music. I was mildly surprised, even though I didn't really get into it. It had nothing to do with the singer himself, but the background was a bit more electronic than I usually listen to. It was a really relaxing song to listen to, tho!
My next offering, Rasputina - Possum of the Grotto (http://www.youtube.com/watch#playnext=1&playnext_from=TL&videos=i59-aoqAaJ8&v=R5mDGSgVbdU).

Hummm, better than the last song I listened to, thats for sure. I listen not underground rap or indie stuff mostly.
I'll throw in a song now from an underground rapper, who I've hung out with on several occasions. Most of his songs pack a punch, although he's slighty polictical in a lot of them since he's also a punk rocker too.
P.o.S. - Optimist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OpHJUJIrpU)
Less scene kid?
I dunno if I'd call that guy 'underground', his video that you linked has nearly 250K views! Anyhow, I liked the song you linked. The instrumentation was solid, and his flow was fantastic; this kid's got potential, and he could end up being one of the future greats of rap (or rap-rock? you mention him being a punk rocker?).
While we're name-dropping, I might as well one-up you like a dick and post a song sung by a guy that I've hung out with on several occasions.

I'M BAAAAAAAAAAAAACK. Oh, that's just a classic song. Not a fan of that live version, though? The sound quality wasn't great. But holy cow, you hung out with Steven Tyler? Multiple times? Um. Awesome?
Well this song might not be as epic, but it is rather groovy. One of my favorites, anyway. Makes me wish I could whistle...
"Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn, and John (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51V1VMkuyx0)
And if you're interested, Kanye West does an awful abomination of a cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LVvCSZKvf8) of this song, but frankly, why would you be interested? :P

In regards to Amara, he's got so many views on his new album because MTV is throwing it out there like crazy. He's true underground because he produces his own music (Living with 7 other MC's) they all do it, and are all in the same group and label. They aren't sell outs, nor mainstream.
And when I say hang out I am refering to blazing up and drinking. I sold the guy pot in december for pete's sake. Yes he's in a punk rock group to, which is how he originally got started.
Young folks is a good song, the only one I've ever heard by PB & J. But I dislike it sometimes because some kid in one of my classes when I was attending the cheesy Art Institute used to put fragments of it into all of his homo documentaries.
Aceyalone - Everything Changes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwbeqPVyxCQ)
I rather liked this. But I've always really liked it when piano music was blended well with hip hop.
My biggest girl crush ever: Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls. Coin Operated Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4gPZPKJc0s) makes me so happy every time I hear it. I sing it all the time at work and get odd looks from people.

One of my favorite songs the year it came out (a Coin Operated Boy would be handy). But I think I prefer The Dresden Dolls' "Backstabber," if only because I didn't hear it all the fucking time for nearly a year.
Moonage Daydream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p79JKclG-oc)
The first half was garbage - I'm not fond of David Bowie as a singer. The guitar solo for the last minute or so was awesome, though. It's not something I'd listen to on my own, but I didn't hate it, I guess.
Shaman's Harvest - Devil's Gift (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJYZpddUeOg&feature=related)
Give "Strike the Slate" - same band - a shot too, if you like this one.

I acutally liked it after the first chorus. I think if this were on the radio I would have easily changed the station before that time though. Amara says this works best if you find a video with it too. You better make sure the person closest to you is of the prefered sex, because you're about to experience the greatest aphrodisiac known to man.

That was a beautiful song, I enjoyed it thoroughly. I didn't understand a single thing after the song, probably because I don't understand french.
Empire of the Sun - We Are The People (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a47Y1lCRHlM)
Long live Emperor Steele!
Whilst I'm fond of electronic or 80's music, Empire of the Sun deliver on the sound, but not on the vocals; the singer has the most drilling tone - I'd be interested to see who else you like Esmeralda, if that 'genre' is your sort of thing? New bands are always welcome, which is why this thread is a great idea all round.
I've not been fond of screamo for a while, but suddenly We Are The Ocean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXpOLW_r4_w)have revitalised my enjoyment. The 'screamer' is a bit shit, but the proper singer is disgustingly hot and his voice is amazing. That, and they're British, none of this American tweemo stuff :D
I was actually surprised at how good that was. You were right on with your description: the screamer is garbage, but the singer was pretty good and the music was good enough that I kept listening even while the screamer assaulted my sanity.
Bleh. I want to throw up something by The Leo Project - they're a great group, but they're very under-the-radar - to the point that my favorite songs aren't even on YouTube.
Instead, I'm going to post a song that I just found from another underground group - AllyriA. The song is Kiss from a Rose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zwev6HEAtw0), and it's a rock remake of a song by Seal. Don't listen to this if you have something against covers, but if you don't mind that or have never heard the original, give it a shot.
Oh that was awesome. I've never heard the original song, so I can't say anything as to its quality, but I liked that a lot...I'm going to have to check out more of their stuff. Wasn't really sure what to expect, but that was quite good. Thanks very much! I like this thread a lot, I think it's quite good for learning about new bands and music that I never would have heard otherwise.
I had a tough time deciding between which of my two favorite power metal bands I wanted to post here...I have to say that I like Nightwish better as a whole, but this song is just so darn epic. I present to you Full Moon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A4WoHxL3GQ), by Sonata Arctica! It's about a werewolf! :D The lyrics...amazing.
I looooove SA! <3 <3 yaaaay!. I force Matt to listen to Tallulah all the time, because I find that SA doing sappy love/heartache ballads to be too adorable for words. Full Moon is one of my favorite songs by them, though.
As I am about to go on a writing splurge with Tshael, I give you a song that gets caught in my head all the time when I'm thinking about her storyline:
Tiger Army - Forever Fades Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuVsQku42wU&feature=channel)
Not my favorite song of theirs, but damn if it ain't catchy.

I'm reviving this thread, and Amanda, that song was just 'meh' to me.
Now you all must hear Walker Hayes awesome song.

The lyrics of the song were awesome, but the rest of it didn't do much for me. I didn't dislike it, I guess, but I wouldn't listen to it again.
Alright, there's finally some Leo Project stuff on YouTube. This song doesn't have a video - just a slideshow of sorts - but it's still well worth a listen if you like rock.

I'm not really sure how I liked it. In general, more melodic rock songs are hit or miss with me. I liked it decently, and I'd listen to it again. I think it would be a good song to write something sad or pensive to.
Iris - Hell's Coming With Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PppGBhnoKAg)
I like it for the most part. The echoing vocals make it a bit hard to understand, but I'll take the beat before the lyrics any day for any song.

I really despise My Chemical Romance. I still listened to this song. Later this month is the ninth anniversary of when my mom died of cancer. While some of the lines were very powerful, and I came close to crying, this is still a shitty song by a shitty band.
Bad Religion - Epiphany (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BUrdazftS0)

I always love Bad Religion, and this reminds me why. Great guitar work, awesome vocals with intelligent lyrics, and and overall great sound from a band that's been going 30 years strong.
And now, for more punk rock! Rancid - Brews (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzjdbCDW5eE)
Jonah T. Barnham
09-12-10, 07:37 AM
Fun song - don't think I like it as much as Coppers or St. Mary, but still fun to imagine writing street fights to. Rancid always reminds me of my brother - anytime I was making themed playlists for my radio show, he'd come in with ten million Rancid suggestions.
Now, continuing the punk theme - though with a fairly non-punky sound for this song! The Ramones! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vexjWIvwsVg)
