Sabatykos Maelstrom
03-09-10, 07:21 AM
After the events that took place here (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=19383), Sabatykos fell off the grid. Emboldened by the win against Alberdyne Cormyr (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=19429), Sabatykos Maelstrom (http://www.althanas.com/world/showthread.php?t=19358) found himself searching for a purpose on Althanas now. So, he traveled to Radasanth from the depths of Concordia with a small group of people. Sabatykos traveled with his Father, Malus Maelstrom. The coach-ride to Radasanth City was a long and boring one, but the inventor found something to occupy his mind with. Tinkering with a small machine, the clock-work device rested squarely on his lap. With his tongue sticking out, the inventor carefully wrestled with a frustrating project. Commissioned by a wealthy family in Radasanth to invent a set of machines for them, the Maelstrom family was rather busy these days. Too busy in fact, to attend to other duties.

With the Maelstrom family, their credo was prosperity first. Working for the same employer for months now, Sabatykos and his Father was busy these days. With a strange set of goggles that he'd put together weeks earlier, Sabatykos was constructing a device. The device was a series of tubes, gears, and springs. Constructed together for the purpose of entertainment, Sabatykos preferred making simple things that would make people happy. His invention would contribute to that. It was meant for the wealthy son of their employer. So Sabatykos found himself working extra hard on the device so that it would come out as perfect as he could make it. The young inventor had spent many days making preparatory calculations, notes, and investigations. Gathering tools was also a necessary part of the scientific process. Sabatykos was learning to properly employ the use of all of his tools. If he were to look up, he would see the wide smile that his Father wore at that precise moment in time.

"You've been messing with that thing for over a month now. You've put aside all other projects to complete this one. I've never seen you so dedicated to something." Malus said casually. He took a pull of a drink that was resting on a small tray nearby to their position. Sabatykos often traveled with his Father to Radasanth City. "Son listen. I have something very important to tell you."

Sabatykos finally stopped tinkering with the device on his lap. He carefully placed the device in a package that was prepared just for it. Sabatykos was putting the finishing touches on the device when his Father had interrupted him. This annoyed the young inventor somewhat, but he respected the word of his parents above only one other's word. And that was the Thayne, Karshook. Wiping sweat off his brow, the inventor studied his Father for a moment. The man was old, how old was rather rough to estimate. He knew that Saenorakym Prime often lived for many thousands of years of age and barely looked any older for their efforts. However, Malus was an old man by his people's standards.

Malus stood at six feet eleven inches and was built like a solid wall. Sabatykos could only guess at his weight. Malus' eyes were a couple of shades lighter than Sabatykos' eyes but they were still brown. Unlike Sabatykos, Malus' skin tone was light brown. Sabatykos had inherited the fair skin of his Mother's people, The Forest Elves of Concordia. Malus wore a thick graying beard, his dreadlocks were platinum colored and ended at the small of hi back. Malus wore an elegant hat and was dress in a nobleman's attire with fine clothing. He had many tattoos and runic markings of the Thayne, Karshook. Each symbol had a different purpose to it. Malus had a broad chest and large hands. All inventors kept their tools handy on their person. Malus and Sabatykos were no different.

Sabatykos, on the other hand, was considerably shorter than Malus. He stood at five feet, eleven inches, and weighed in about one hundred and eighty pounds. Sabatykos had dark brown eyes, a few shades darker than that of his Father, and he had fair skin. Much fairer skin than that of his Father. All gifts of appearance from his Mother's side of the family. The young inventor wore his glasses, and raised the goggles up atop his head. The youth also wore dreadlocks but they were black. He sat back against the seat around him to listen to his Father's words. Though, impulsively, he wanted to continue his work so that he could get it done.

"What is our Family's credo?" Malus suddenly asked.

"To preserve the essence of the Inventor's spirit on Althanas. We insure the future of Althanas as a whole. Our light is the light of prosperity, the wisdom of ages, the knowledge of tomorrow." Sabatykos said making sure that he got the ancient Maelstrom credo right. "Without prosperity, only ignorance and anarchy would reign across the world."

"Good boy. Listen to me son." Malus looked out the window of the single carriage that was a smaller part of a larger caravan. All around them, the wonders of Concordia Forest engulfed them. However, they were on the outer edges of the grand region, almost upon Radasanth. "Invention is only a part of our people's way. Saenorakym Prime have protected the innocent for ages now. Our Elders often say that we are better suited to be Knights and Paladins than Inventors. But machinery comes second nature to us rather than violence. There will come a time when The Living Dark comes to test your nobility." Malus had a far away look in his eyes. He appeared very tired suddenly, as if he had not slept in many moons.

"Father, what is the matter? It is not like you to pull us away from one of our jobs without just cause." Sabatykos said. "What is troubling you?"

"I've not been sleeping." Malus revealed. "Karshook grants some of our people with the knowledge of Foresight." Malus closed his eyes and thought carefully about what he was going to reveal. "I see a time of great turmoil approaching our people. We will no longer be at a stage of peace and prosperity." Malus said. "A great darkness will come very soon to bring strife to Corone where there is already strife and ignorance. You must one day choose a side." Malus said. "You must think long and hard about this decision. For when the time comes only action will be the course of the hour."

"Father. I've never heard you speak like this. You have taught me that it is not in the nature of our people to interfere unless something truly evil is happening that we can do something about." Sabatykos drank some berry berry juice out of his goblet. Then set the goblet down. There were some snacks as well, cheese and crackers and a few meats. Sabatykos took a strip of dried meat, and some cheese and ate these casually. After swallowing his snack he looked at his Father once again. "I've never heard you speak like this." Sabatykos continued. "What is it that you have seen?"

"Sabatykos. I have seen a terrible disaster that will happen to our people. A disaster that will come to us from The Great Beyond. Another plane of existence, something related to The Thayne. I don't know much more than that." Malus said casually. He continued. "I will need you to be strong. I have heard of your victory in The Citadel."

"Oh that, yeah its something I did on my own. I wanted to practice some techniques against a skilled opponent." Sabatykos said.

"That will come in very handy for you." Malus responded. "Listen my son."
Malus said. "I have talked to an old friend of mine who works within The Citadel. They have offered me a chance to train you better than I could alone. You must exercise all venues to prepare for what is coming. I want you to take in a steady education with the Monks of Ai'Bron. Consider this an old man's last wish..." Malus said and became silent. He turned to stare out the window as if he wasn't staring at the Firmanent at all...

And that's how Sabatykos found himself looking at The Citadel once again.

It had been several moons since the last time that Sabatykos entered the incredible structure. Today, he'd come at the request of his Father, Malus Maelstrom. Along the way to Radasanth, Sabatykos had managed to complete the small clockwork device that he'd been constructing. To exact specifications. The device had actually been a toy that he had constructed for their client's wealthy son. His Father had gone to conclude the business at hand whilst Sabatykos was left to go explore the Radasanth on his own.

Ending up at The Citadel, the inventor sat on the steps of the structure for a long moment. The marble stairs had seen the paths true for many warriors through the history of Althanas. For a moment, Sabatykos pictured some of the battles that were waged in The Citadel's customizable combat chambers and wondered where he was placed in the rankings. As Sabatykos pondered the situation at hand, he waited to be greeted by his Father's companion.

Soon, a certain Monk walked over to the young inventor. The older man placed a comforting hand upon the youth's shoulder. Sabatykos looked up towards the stranger. Before him stood a monk that wore elegant robes with various intricate markings upon it. Sabatykos guessed that this was a monk with considerable influence within the order of Ai'Bron. He was no neophyte judging by the elegance of his robes.

"Are you Malus' son?" The monk asked with a stern sounding voice. "I can see the family resemblance." The monk said. He continued. "Your Father told me why you are here today."

Sabatykos listened to the monk for a long moment whilst he spoke. "Yes. I am here to further my training." It was a simple fact and an elegant statement. Some warriors and wizards never even realized why they entered The Citadel in the first place. "Can you help me?"

"Follow me." The monk said.

Soon, Sabatykos stood in front of a chamber. The maze-like hallways of the structure seemed without bounds. They moved in every direction into the building. Some passages moved up, down, and at bizarre angles too confusing to even name. Sabatykos understood mathematics and physics and The Citadel had an uncanny ability to make him feel overwhelmed. As he walked to Chamber Number 27, the inventor felt a sense of awe at the massive structure. Large doors made out of heavy wood of some sort and embroidered with the purest of gold were emblazoned with the numbers 27. The monks lead Sabatykos to the chamber. Sabatykos looked at the elder monk and thanked him for his time.

"What do I do now?" Sabatykos asked.

"You've been here before have you not?" The monk responded with a seemingly limitless reservoir of patience.

"I have under slightly different circumstances."

"Just walk in and we'll take care of the rest." The monk said. "Remember, the chamber will create any Arena you can think of at will, but only one per battle."

"All right, I'll give this a try." Sabatykos said and prepared himself for combat. The monks opened the doors somehow and the rest was ready. He entered the chamber and a brilliant flash of light surrounded him...

(I will reveal the Arena in my next post this is open to anybody who wants to join)
