View Full Version : Maggoty Bread

((open to two others))

It was a warm afternoon, and Funji could be found sitting on a rock. The rock was rather large to him, but could be easily lifted by a human. He just sat, doing nothing in particular, except watching the ants go by. Every once and a while, he would jam a stubby finger onto the stone, crush an ant, pull it up to his face for inspection, then shove it in his mouth. The only food he had was his maggoty bread, and it was pretty much useless, seeing as he had already sucked the maggots out.

He stood, after an appetizer of arthropods, and stretched, letting out a little goblin-yawn. His green ears quivered, and his sharp teeth showed, but then he closed his mouth, rubbed his eyes, and promptly scratched his rear. He picked up his backpack, strapped on his cleaver, and began to walk. He had broken a tree earlier, and one of it’s limbs now served him as a walking stick.

How he longed to see someone. His recent gambling spree had left him low on cash, so now he was exploring the traditional, old-fashioned way. The sun sank ever lower, and started to get into his eyes. He didn’t like being blinded, so(being the unintelligent creature he is) he turned around and started walking back to the rock. All the while thinking he was making progress.

The devil had sent Rine back to earth. She had no clue where she was. It was warm and the sun was out, so she stayed hidden in the shadows of the trees. She breathed slowly, trying to calm herself down. Her head was buzzing with questions that she knew no answer to.

'Rine.' The devil's voice rang through Rine's head like a church bell. She quickly looked around, scanning the trees all around her, but didn't see a thing.

'I'm not there Rine.' The devil said again. 'I'm still in Hell.' At that Rine relaxed a little. She didn't want to run into the devil again after just getting back to earth. After their little meeting in hell the devil had kept her there for four years, training her to be like him. She had learned how to use a katana, and she was a master at it.

"What do you want?" She demanded from the devil in a challenging voice. She heard a faint chuckle.

'Don't make me angry on your first day back to earth, because I can easily bring you back to your real home, here in hell with me.' He said, threatening her in that tone she had learned not to mess with. 'Stay where you are and wait for a goblin to come.' He ordered.

"A goblin? What business would I have with it?" She asked. The air was still and she got no response. She sighed heavily and rolled her eyes. She climbed swiftly up into one of the trees and sat on a branch, looking out for the goblin to come.

A faint whistle escaped Funji's lips as he hopped, skipped and jumped around. He was enjoying his immaturity, and made a show of it. He saw a butterfly fluttering in the distance, so he quickly ran over to it. Not wanting to be lunch, the butterfly floated away as Funji quickly swung his cleaver at it a multitude of times. The goblin then stopped and snorted into the air loudly. He smelled someone else.

Air vibrated his bulbous nostrils as he emitted another snort. He then began to smack the ground like some kind of Gorilla. He bit into the ground and pulled out a mouthful of dirt before grinning in disgust and spitting it out. He hooted and hollered. He could not yet see the form, but he ran towards the smell.

"Funji kill you! You no go Funji's rock, or you fight Funji!" He bellowed as loud as his little Goblin-lungs would go. "Funji mess you up REAL BIG-LIKE!!!" As soon as the other figure was in sight he stuck his hands in the air and babbled like a drunken idiot, pulling his cleaver and swinging it like a maniac.

Rine's golden gaze followed the goblin's every movement. When it picked up her scent and pulled out it's weapon she knew she should try to talk with him so he'd know she meant no harm. She slowly stood on the branch, concentrating on her feet so she could keeping her balance. With a quiet grunt she pushed off from the branch and sailed through the air, her arms and hands reaching out, preparing to grab hold of the lower branch in the tree beside hers. She caught onto it smoothly, but the branch was weaker than she had thought, and it broke with a snap and sent her plummeting to the ground.

She landed on her back and gasped when she noticed her hood had fallen away and her face was exposed. Her bald head and white skin glowed in the evening sun like a light bug, and her golden eyes and sharp blood-stained teeth could easily be taken as a threat. She knew she was hideous and foul looking, so she quickly threw her hood back over her face.

She stood slowly, trying not to make any quick movements. Her eyes watched the goblin consistantly.

"Hello there fella." She said, putting on a fake cheery voice. "I'm, well my name is Rine, and I think I'm lost." She inoccently hung her head and let out a little sniffle.

Roland’s green eyes scanned the floor as he just walked on for many miles. He wasn’t sure where he would find this cure for his father, but may the gods give him the strength to do it. Not a minute passed by without the small boy thinking about his parent. The mere image of the man lying in the bed never to wake up was a fearful image indeed.

Roland just shuddered and shook it out of his head. Suddenly some rustling came from a few trees only about ten yards away. The boy jumped before he looked into that direction to see a woman fall to the ground, and when her hood fell off, his eyes became very wide as he let out a small yelp. Roland quickly cupped a hand over his mouth, hopefully she hadn’t heard that. Before hesitating to find out, the young boy crawled over behind a tree, peeking around it.

Not only was there a woman, but a hideous green looking figure. Could this be a goblin that he heard of from his father? This one seemed a little more chaotic.

Just the way this Funji character was acting made the child giggle in a whisper, but of course he realized he made a noise and covered his mouth again.

Oh no, he thought for a moment, this woman is planning to kill this goblin. She’s going to eat him! “You leave him alone!” The boy snapped before turning from the tree and pointing his sword at her. “J-just leave him alone!”

The iron sword was very unsteady and was impossible to keep it in one place. “I-if you eat him.. I’ll…I’ll make you regret it!” Now the boys legs were shaking in fear and goose bumps were making their ways up his arm.

Funji's miniature feet padded lightly against the soft ground. A grasshopper felt the slight vibrations and fluttered a few feet forward. SMASH!!! Funji's foot smushed the bug as he screamed. "YOU NO EAT FUNJI! FUNJI KILL BOTH!!!" His cleaver and his fanged grin, despite his comical stature, was quite ferocious. When the Goblin reached a distance of about 6 or 7 feet from his opponent, he leapt.

His large-bladed cleaver was as far back as it would go, and his feet sprawled in front of him. He would swing the cleaver straight at Rine, and if he missed he would run under her legs and turn around, prepared for an attack, or to attack again. The Grasshopper's segmented limbs twitched a little as a tarantula-sized spider swiftly scuttered to it and grabbed it with two of its monstrous fore-limbs.

Rine looked as a little boy hopped out of the bushes and threatened her. She rolled her eyes and scowled at the little twerp for interrupting.

"Get out of here kid. I'm not going to kill this goblin. I just wanted to talk. I've been wandering around for days and haven't seen anyone...." She stopped and decided the boy wasn't worth her words. She turned back to the goblin, who seemed to be entertaining himself by playing around with bugs.

"I just wanna chat a little, you know?" She said to the goblin with a fake friendly smile. The smile quickly faded as she saw the goblin leap into the air, yelling it's stupid pathetic head off. Rine sighed, crossing her arms and relaxing her posture. She turned to the boy again.

"You might not want to be here. Goblins are nasty little buggars." She said with a friendly grin and wink. With that she turned her attention back to it.

Roland slightly narrowed his eyes. This zombie of a woman wasn’t even threatened by him. His shaky sword pointed to the ground.

The boys eyes stuck onto the crazy goblin, he was smashing bugs, which was odd. Roland really didn’t know what to do, but he knew that woman was no good. There was no way she was human, so he picked up a rock and threw it at her head. “Leave him alone!”

It was something about this woman; he felt darkness from her, a darkness that he couldn’t explain. Just one of those gut feelings you get when things just aren’t right. Roland picked up another rock and threw it at her. “Just leave him alone!”

Funji’s eyes shot open when he caught a glimpse of a small stone that was tossed by a boy. Looking from the boy to the rock, he suddenly went off. “FUNJI WANT!”

The small goblin ran under the woman’s legs and tackled the small pebble with a roll. Examining it quickly, he stuffed it in his mouth, causing his left cheek to bulge. “YOU NO TAKE FROM FUNJI!”

Sitting, the goblin lied the clever beside him and gnawed on the hard stone, no longer paying any attention to the two.

A little rock hit Rine in the chin and she turned sharply towards the boy. He looked scared, but determined. The next rock he threw Rine caught, throwing it back at him hard, aiming at his left eye. She stepped away from the goblin, who almost rolled int her legs.

"Excuse me, goblin. Do you speak?" Rine asked, watching him chew on the rocks. She thought he could talk, but so far by the way he acted he seemed even dumber than she origonally thought they where.

Roland watched as the rock hit the undead woman right in the chin. A feeling of victory came over him until she caught the second one. His soul jumped out of his skin as he saw in horror the rock coming right for his head. Smack, the rock hit him right in his left eye. Roland quickly dropped to the floor holding his face. The pain, it was unbearable.

The boy rolled into a ball as he cried in pain. It hurt so badly, now he could feel fresh blood soaking into his dirty hands. The rock must have cut him during the impact of his eye.

A gash went from the top of his nose down across his eye. This was most defiantly going to leave a mark. Roland just remained crouched into a ball shuddering. After a minute or so the young boy got on his feet with snarling teeth. His one green eye which wasn’t covered in blood sparked with anger. “You son of a bitch!” He shouted out loud before lifting his sword up above his head and charging at the woman.

Funji watched as the woman threw the rock back hitting the poor boy in the face. The goblin’s jaw dropped. A load of saliva and spit came drooling out before the small pebble fell from his mouth and bounced against the dirt surface with light padded thuds.

He listened to the woman. He seemed to somewhat understand what she was saying. In reaction, he tilted his head and his right foot started to twitch with excitement. His nostrils became large and round when he took in a big breath of air. Exhaling, his nostrils went normal.

“WAGH CHOO!!!” Funji suddenly spat as his sneeze knocked him right off his feet. Slimy snot would spray all over her robes.

The goblin got on his feet and looked up at the woman innocently.

“Son of a bitch!”

Funji’s ears perked at the sound of the boy’s voice. Looking behind the woman, he noticed the boy coming after her.

Funji’s eyes narrowed and his head shot toward a tree. Lifting his clever high into the air, he charged after it. “SON BITCH!!!”

Rine smiled, a triumphant feeling bubbling through her body when she saw the boy's blood and heard his cries. He stood, looking like a squirrel who's nuts just got stolen. He cried some meaningless curse word and picked up his sword, charging at Rine.

"Those types of things happen when you get involved in other people's matters." She said calmly, watching the boy with a golden glare. She leaned over and quickl scooped up another two rocks, aiming them both at his other eye. "Don't take another step or I'll make sure you can't see for the rest of your life." Rine said sternly. "I don't want to kill you. Just run along home like a good little boy."

Roland continued to run as tears fell behind. His hands clutched hard against the handle readying his attack. This was his business, she shouldn’t have bin tampering with a poor innocent goblin. Now she took it too far by hurting him. The boy just couldn’t control himself; his anger had always gotten the better of him. He’s always had an anger problem, back as far as he could remember. Roland could remember how his mother always told him one day it will create his downfall. The boy’s father just cocked back and laughed. “The boys growin’ up” He’d always say. “Startin’ to learn he has to fend for himself one day.”

Knowing that the creepy woman took up two stones of her own, Roland pushed with his legs advancing himself forward as he quickly thrust his sword down across the girl’s leg. He then let him self fall and landed on his feet with a roll. Turning, he swung upward at the woman’s face.

It was odd; Roland could never remember actually fighting this good in his life. Something about his anger must have struck a nerve, causing him to fight better then he’d normally would. Looks like he finally put some use to what his father taught him.

Funji let out a wild hoot as his cleaver came down slicing the tree right in half like a chief cutting a carrot. The large mass of wood slid from its trunk and came crashing down into the ground with a loud slam.

“WAGH!!!” The goblin cheered with great victory as he took his clever holding it high above his head as if it were some kind of ritual tool. Then something caught his eye, the woman and small boy were fighting, and someone kicked his stone.

Funji was silent for the longest time until his started to wine with his mouth open wide. His whine became louder and louder until it he was screaming. “YOU NO KICK FUNJI ROCK!! FUNJI KILL BOTH!!!”

The small goblin went nuts and went after the two with his cleaver. It was really hard to tell who he’d attack first. He was just plain going nuts and throwing random swings everywhere.

Rine sighed impatiently, watching the boy run at her with his sword, and the goblin with his club. The boy rolled, slashing her legs, then turned and slashed her face. Where he cut her was just dents, open and showing raw flesh. The air began to smell like dead bodies, and Rine tore off her cloak, revealing her hideousness to all that where around.

She stood between the boy and the goblin, wearing a ragged brown smock, skinny legs spread apart. Her skin was white as milk, her golden eyes had a glint of hate in them, and she smiled, revealing pointy, blood-stained teeth.

Rine concentrated hard on the face of a demon, and when the goblin's club hit her, her skin absorbed it. She needed to absorb more things to get to the full size of the demon, so she reached out her hand and touched a nearby tree. The tree began disappearing into Rine's body, section by section until it was gone. Rine let out a shrill laugh that began to deepen as she grew.

Her skin turned red and two big horns broke through her skin, potruding out of her forehead. Her muscles rippled and moved as her smock ripped into two, revealing a massive, muscular body. Her eyes glowed bright red, and steam rose from her nostrils. Dark red blood oozed from her open mouth, and she snapped her jaws widly.

She swiped the air with her claws, and roared a blood chilling battle cry.

Roland jumped back after he saw his attack was very successful, but not a scream came from her, but he cut open her flesh how could she not be hurt? There wasn’t even a whimper from her. Could she not feel pain? The boy held up his sword in a defensive stance and held his ground there. His green eyes watched as the goblin, who seems to call himself Funji, ran and attacked her with his cleaver. Once again, not a roar of pain came from her. It was plain creepy.

The woman ripped her clothes from her body and now was in a lighter cloth. Just the site of her ruined body made the hairs on the back of his neck stick up. Chills ran up his spine in a tingling sensation. This all was really starting to scare him. Her teeth were only something he would hear in a ghost story, but no, this was truly real. This wasn’t a dream.

It wouldn’t be hard to believe she was once very beautiful, now she was a monster. What made her like this, what caused her to convert into such a hideous thing? This was all just the beginning, for things got much worse then what they already were.

The putrid stench blackened in his nose. That smell her wounds left off were horrible, it was as if her blood was old and rotten. Her body then started to shift into a demonic figure, causing the boy’s fear to grow. Especially after he watched the number she did on that tree. Was she going to do the same thing to him?

Roland’s whole body shook and his eyes looked to be in shock, which caused him to retreat and step back. One foot after another, he started to back away from this creature as it let out a loud blood thirsty roar. His sword was still held firmly in front of him.

Funji had hit the woman with just one swing, leaving a pretty nasty scar on her, but it didn’t seem to bring her much pain. The goblin settled his nerves and dived for his special rock that he wanted no one to touch obviously. Snatching it, he quickly hid behind the fallen tree and praised his pebble. Missing all of what was going on.

Something let out a bloody roar and the goblin’s heart skipped a beat as he flew about three feet into the air. Looking over the thick bark of his tree, his eyes got a glimpse of the demon creature. His eyes went wide and the little creature’s jaw dropped.

Funji started to whine and whimper a few times as his eyes twitched. Then, finally losing it, Funji shouted in fear. “FUNJI RUN!!!”

The goblin bolted forward and jumped up onto Roland’s head, pushing off of it so he could make his way up into the branch of a tree. With a scatter the creature disappeared somewhere into the trees.

Rine's new red, glowing eyes traced the goblin's steps, but at the moment she had no interest in him. She swung her head back around towards the little boy who was now retreating. The boy still held his sword, but he didn't seem as though he planned on using it.

Rine licked her lips hungrily, tasting the sour blood on her tounge. Her stomach lurched, it's emptyness bothering it, and the taste of blood exciting it. The boy's flesh was calling to her, and his expression made it all the more satisfying. She took a step towards him, swiping her open hand through the air, trying to hit the boy's sword from his grasp.

The boy’s fear deepened when the demonic figure stepped forward taking a quick swing at the boy. Immediately Roland’s sword was batted from his hands. Now what was he going to do? Without his weapon, he’d die for sure. There was no way to defend himself. Tears started to fill in the boy’s eyes and a long cold wall stopped him from baking away. He managed to corner himself up against the tree and now he had nowhere to run.

Roland looked to the right and then quickly glanced to the left for an escape, but if he were to retreat, that beast would most likely have a good swing at him, which wouldn’t be the least bit satisfying. “Ectonis….” The boy choked, “H-help…..”

There was no one to help him and he knew it. Ectonis was probably far from here. He was going to die and that was that. Roland huddled himself into a ball in front of the beast, covering his face while his eyes cemented shut. With that, he started to plead. “Please don’t hurt me…I-I’m sorry… I want throw rocks anymore!”

Funji continued to hide, unwilling to reveal himself from his hiding spot. He just sat there and shook, not really caring about the boy below. All that mattered was Funji’s life and his little pebble of course. There was no way this goblin was going to fight that thing. He was far too young to die in such a horrid way. That is why the goblin sat back, placed his elbows on his knees and enjoyed the show.

The sword flew from the boy's hand, and he stepped away from her, obviously frightened.

“Please don’t hurt me…I-I’m sorry… I wont throw rocks anymore!” Rine paused, waiting for the devil's command. She wanted to kill him, to rip his body apart, but she wasn't certain weather the devil wanted him alive or not.

'Kill him.' Was all she heard.

Rine roared again, disappointed that the boy gave up without even giving her a fight. Her muscles where tense and her stomach was empty, the perfect combination to hunt down prey. She put all her strenght into her foot, stomping the ground, causing it to crack and the trees around to shake. She reached over and picked up a tree, tearing it's roots out of the hard soil. She brought it up over her head, holding it like a bat. She wanted to see the little boy's body crushed and mangled on the ground, so she brought the tree down hard, aiming for him.

Roland watched in horror as the demon yanked a tree right from the ground and rose it high into the air. The boy knew he should have stayed home, he was a fool for running away, and now it was going to cost not only his life, but his father’s as well. Roland’s mother wouldn’t have anything left. Both parts of her heart would be crushed, just like what this tree was going to do to Roland’s small body.

The young boy’s heart raced as his eyes were wide. Then he noticed something, his sword, it was lying beneath the creature as it prepared to throw the tree. Quickly with agility, Roland raced forward picking up his sword and swooped up from under the woman, digging his sword right into the demon’s stomach. Letting out a small cry, he gripped the handle and gave it a rough twist. This was his only option, his only way of survival. The time of death was not now, he set a goal to save his father, and he wasn’t going to fail, not this soon.

Funji yelped like a scared puppy and quickly jumped out of the tree after the demonic woman ripped it out of the dirt, roots and all. “WALGH!!” The goblin came tumbling to the ground and rolled a few times before another tree painfully stopped him with the thud. The impact knocked the creature right out, his clever dropping beside him lifeless.

The goblin planned to stay out of this, but it seemed he got caught in the cross fire.

Sera had been standing by, watching as the fight between the three progressed. She was hidden well near a tree, using her control over the shadows to ensure she stayed hidden. A falcon flew over head the fight, occasionally landing on a branch above her. It would seem to someone that the falcon was somehow talking to Sera whenever it landed, and that was in fact the case. It was watching over head while she watched from the side, so she in some ways got a full view over everything that happened.

Even when it seemed like the boy was loosing the fight, Sera didn't move. Her reason for being here was to see how he lasted, though if it was too much she'd jump in. The falcon took off once more and Sera's eyes left the fight for a second to watching it. Gripping onto her staff tightly, she cast her gaze back, ready to jump in at a second's notice.

Rine's eyes widened as her longing for blood grew heavier. Her teeth seemed to gleam in the light, as her stomach growled, low and loud. Her hands flexed easily, longing to rip the body into peices. She held herself back, making sure that the devil wouldn't mind.

'May I?' She thought, asking the devil's permission. For a brief moment there were no answers, just a deadly silence. Then the devil's malicious voice boomed,

'No, Rine. You see, this boy is special. With your help, he could be a great worker of mine!' The devil laughed, thinking only of himself and the things he could get out of it. Rine huffed, wishing she could eat the kid. She imagined the juicy flesh in her grasp, only a bite away--

'Rine! Stop your day dreaming and get to it! Do something that will make him listen, and convince him I have the key to his answers!' Well he did. The devil was very powerful and could do many great, big things. Rine growled.

'He thinks I'm about to kill him. Do you really think he's going to listen to me?' She though, noticing what she had just said after she said it. A hungry smile appeared on her face as she looked down at the frightened boy. She took a step closer to him, making her voice as sweet as it could sound.

"Little boy, do you need something?" She asked, leaning over towards him.

'He is on a quest to save his father, or something like that.' The devil said, telling Rine what his spies had found out. 'His father is sick. I can make him better, though I'd have to transfer his father's sickness to someone else.' The devil chuckled.

'If I may be so bold, why do you think he'd trust the devil?' Rine asked, stepping over the limit. There was an immediate burning sensation in her head, that felt as though nails where being driven through her temples. It abruptly stopped, just as it had started.

'You may not.' The devil replied, his tone cold and deadly. Rine shook it off, returning her attention to the boy, waiting for him to respond.
