Batteryn
08-01-06, 06:19 PM
Name: Teria Indola Jesyliby
Age: ~26 (Batteryns don’t make a point of keeping track of such things.)
Race: Batteryn
These are small flying creatures with the look of a lizard-like bat. They are covered in tiny gray and brown scales that produce unique identifying patterns, with larger pairs of scales forming chest armor. Largely nocturnal, though they are quite able to go out in daylight; they do however have trouble seeing in bright sunlight. They have tufted ears and fairly long legs with taloned feet. They have six ‘fingers’, three of which are used for manipulation and the others lengthened to form the framework of their wings. The Batteryns originate from a dense jungle in a largely unexplored region. In having to deal with this harsh environment, they have developed camouflage, as well as a high-pitched screech to defend themselves from predators. This screech can range from mildly painful to permanent hearing loss, though the strength of this ability varies. They sustain themselves on a mixed diet of insects and plant material. Despite being hatched from eggs, they are warm-blooded, maintaining a body temperature several degrees above that of a human. Because of this they are more susceptible to the cold. The Batteryns are an oral people, and as such, have highly developed memories. Teria, however, knows very little folklore, having left so young. Instead she soaks up knowledge of her new surroundings and of new peoples like a sponge. Batteryns mate for life, and will lay a clutch of up to three eggs once in a lifetime.
(I will post a reference pic later if you like.)
Hair Color: N/A
Eye Color: Black
Skin Color: Gray
Height: ~16 inches
Weight:~15 lbs
Wingspan: ~3 feet
Personality: She is endlessly cheerful and outgoing, though she recognizes when seriousness is called for. She also has an insatiable curiosity; she loves meeting new people and learning of other customs and races, as well as different trades and how things work (i.e. she wants to know everything.) She also has no understanding of the concept of personal space, and will frequently claim a person’s shoulder whether they are willing or not. She has no inhibitions; she says what she feels or thinks, sometimes making a fool of herself, though she takes it all in stride. She rarely takes offense; in fact she loves to trade insults and push others’ buttons. Though she will eat any fruit, vegetable or insect, she dislikes meat, and has a distinct aversion to alcohol (This aversion followed an episode in which she was too drunk to fly, something she has no wish to repeat.) She also has severe allergic reactions to tobacco smoke.
Appearance: Typical Batteryn. Her scales have a pattern resembling jagged brown spirals on a gray background scattered about her body.
History: Teria is an atypical Batteryn in that she was curious about the outside world; beyond the jungle as it were. Though others were content to live in the treetops, venturing out only to gather food, she was dreaming of more. Her parents tried to discourage such thoughts and even tried to get their only hatchling life-mated early. This only served to push her away and make her more curious, though stories of previous Batteryn explorers made her somewhat cautious. Later she was sure the elders had exaggerated the tales of their gruesome deaths. She left as soon as she became of age, her parents and all of the elders, even some of her peers, following her and trying every method in which to persuade her to stop this foolishness. They stopped at the edge of the jungle. She didn’t. The first part of her journey was through uncharted regions. She found nothing much of interest besides the wide variety of terrain and some occasional new animal species until she reached civilization. There she learned some hard lessons (How not to perch on a pet seller’s stall seeking a rest, why it is not polite to make off with whatever food you see lying on a random table, how incurring damages requires recompense requires money requires a job.) eventually becoming a scout for a merchant train in order to pay off her debt. Now her debt is paid off, her eyes are a little more open, she’s a little more worldly, and wondering what’s next.
Skills:
Flight - Normal, mortal flight. Quite agile in the air. Limitations: Top speed is human running speed. Ceiling: Just above treetops. Continuous flight can be maintained for no longer than half an hour. She does more flitting about than out and out flight. (Note: Flight will not be used in battle without other PC's permission.)
Camouflage - Limited to natural, earthy tones. The farther the desired color is from her natural shade, the longer it takes to acheive (i.e. Teria could shift to look like bark in a snap, but to turn green takes about a minute.)
Voice - Her strength level would be moderately strong. Her defensive shriek can be powerful enough to cause momentary crippling pain of the ears and temporary deafness (deafness lasting no longer than a day), though it will be worse for someone/something with enhanced hearing.
Weapons: Natural weaponry: Teeth, claws, talons. Voice: see above.
Armor: Natrual scales: Most smaller than a snake's, five larger pairs make up chest armor. Camouflage as a defense: see above.
Equipment: A pair of goggles a dwarven smith made for her; they are basically sunglasses, so she isn’t blinded when traveling by day. Also a small pack strapped to her front, in which she can carry messages, a bit of money, a snack, etc.
