People trying to advertise on althanas?

Has anyone else noticed the lame user names with the ads in the signatures popping up every now and then? It's a small problem, but annoying at the same time. Should we bother looking into it or no?

It's gonna happen regardless of whether or not we catch em. As long as people can register on Althanas, you'll have spammers and ads.

Just have more sense than clicking on things like 'JohnMalkovich568' or 'JamesMcDonald419' or 'uttam123'.

You'd be surprised how many ways people can get around an IP ban.

Most likely the spammer(s) can change their IPs/have multiple IPs, so if they're insistent enough, IP bans would just stem the tide for a few moments.

What interests me, though, is that, during the few days I've been here, it seems none of them actually post. Possibly, they're just going for the search hits.

They're probably just SEO specialists, which is kind of lame seeing as I work for an SEO company. This is our competition? Seriously? They don't even try posting or anything.

That's really no excuse. I've had more than two threads I've been in, and seeing as I don't see any of yours put up for judging, I don't really see you waiting for anything. You write when you feel like it. Whether it be a solo, or another thread (Ice dragons?), that's up to you, but you write.

Max, what's the security you have in place to eliminate spam accounts? Obviously it's people hired to do this for a living, as CAPTCHA doesn't work, but there's a simple way to filter them out as well.

If they are found, it then cross checks the post count for the user. If it's between 1-5 posts it puts the post into a moderation queue. This is why ROG threads disappear sometimes. If you put too many of the choice words in your profile, I have to go in an approve the post to make it appear.

It doesn't stop registration though. That's why we do periodic member purges. However, vB 4 uses a pretty advanced CAPTCHA system that prevents about 80% of the SPAM accounts from being created.
