View Full Version : The Forgotten Classics

Since most of you people think it's just the coolest goddamn thing in the world to pick the shittiest song you can fucking think of and announce it to everyone in the 'What Are You Listening To' thread as your top fave (What will Althanas' Ronnie Retard pick today? Hiromiyu Nakamuchi's new pop single "The Same Shit Popdroids Always Sing About But In Japanese" or death metal's newest sensation Ramhead's hit single "Bloodaxe Demonfall" from their debut album "Music That Pisses Off Your Parents and Makes Us Rich"?), I decided to start a thread featuring only the classics. But not just any classics! I don't want wall-to-wall youtube links of The Beatles' full discography. That would be too easy. Let's see some FORGOTTEN classics. Shit you probably don't hear everyday, probably forgot about, but you hear it and you remember what music used to be like before everyone with talent killed themselves.

To start us off:

The Knack - My Sharona (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVdnqEyToqg)

Check that shit out. Don't just listen to the song playing in the background while tending to your farmville or whatever; check the video. On his best day Mick Jagger wasn't half as fucking funky as Doug Fieger is in this. Check that pelvic thrust! That's rock and roll, dammit! Remember that!?

Remember rock and roll?

Alright, take it away, rest of you. I'd say don't disappoint me but to be perfectly honest I'm bracing myself for the next post to be something unforgivably fucking stupid like, shit, I don't know...A Madonna song or something. Material Girl. But whatever, maybe the stars will align and you'll hit me with something rad that I'd totally forgotten about and I'll love you forever.

House of the Rising Sun - The Animals

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmdPQp6Jcdk

I assume this is adequate. I find The Animals cover of this song to be the most appealing and universally popular, though I've heard other versions of the song that could conceivably be better. Still a classic, as any song would be when it has such a rich backstory deeply rooted in mythical Americana.

Godhand
12-13-10, 06:47 AM
Fixed my link since apparently EMI can't be seen in Colombia and Vebo can't be seen in America. It's a small world after all.

Kudos to you, Sulla! You are a prince of the pacific, a king of the coast! I have that album. That song is fucking fantastic; my favorite Animals song by far. A distant, distant second is probably Boom Boom.

I can't explain why, but this 'classic' has been stuck in my head for awhile.

I would recommend people posting the name of the song/artist they're linking to, just so those that can't view the link can search for the song on their own. I couldn't play any of those links, probably because I live in a cave and my computer runs on steam and youtube sucks.

House of the Rising Sun was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on guitar. More recently, I learned to bang out this.

Down By the River - Neil Young (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMKAC0V9FDQ)

Hysteria

The Doors, Riders on the Storm. Although its had a bit of a comeback lately, I remember my Dad playing it when I was a wee one.

Otherwise some Nirvana, Heart Shaped Box
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6P0SitRwy8

I'll just chuck up a few others:

Janie's Got A Gun - Aerosmith
Piano Man - Billy Joel
Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses (thankyou guitar hero for ever more destroying this song)
Throw Your Arms Around Me - Hunters & Collectors

Saxon
12-13-10, 10:44 AM
Sweet Child O' Mine is one of the most overplayed, overexaggerated songs to date. Plus, Axl Rose is a hack. But, you redeemed yourself with The Doors.

My contribution? I had to search really far and wide to dig this one up, but I think this one could be appreciated;

Blues Before Sunrise - John Lee Hooker

Also, I should be beaten for forgetting to mention this;

Jump Into The Fire - Harry Nilsson

Eh, believe it or not I kinda grew up on a lot of old songs. Styx was a great band, I still listen to a couple of their songs when I want to be inspired. I like a couple of older songs like message in a bottle by the police. I also like a couple songs from like back in my dads day. Safety dance and such. Just thinking about all the hours spent hanging out with my dad listening to the songs he had in his car, me him and my little brother...Nostalgia....

While Sympathy for the Devil and Paint it Black are two of my favorite entries from The Rolling Stones, one of my other favorites by them I find unappreciated.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt_493ktyto

Stray Cat Blues - The Rolling Stones.

It's got that manufactured, down to earth (anti-Beatles) style that the Stones were promoted for in their early years. Also, it takes Mick Jagger to make a song about pedophilia acceptable. Search through any live version and you'll hear "fifteen" replaced with "thirteen," which is cutting the realm of acceptable close.

Wynken

Music that has been forgotten, has been forgotten for a reason. In fact, the phrase "forgotten classics" is entirely paradoxical. Most of these could be considered (by someone I'm sure?) to be enduring classics anyway. There's nothing forgotten about them. Just tune your FM radio to the local "classic" rock station and wait 15 minutes. You're bound to have heard 33% of the posts so far.

Seriously. The Knack? My Sharona? This is satire right? I thought I had read something being mentioned about talent?

My submissions:

Queensryche - Eyes of a Stranger (1988) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvgLj8pawGI)

Shawn Lane - Get You Back (1992) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Yf5eNVik_E)

Dream Theater - Metropolis Part I (1992) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaQpC4HuJ5M)

Symphony X - Premonition (1994) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbQuY3hw7us&feature=related)

Edit:

And just for good measure -

Racer X - Scarified (1987) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOW_-OESnq0)

Yngwie Malmsteen - Far Beyond the Sun (Original in 1984) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK0rvReE-4c)

For you Trans-Siberian Orchestra fans...bet you didn't know they started off as a metal band.
Savatage - The Dungeons are Calling (1984) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywmpWsM2ZFU)

Hah! Now I'm convinced this is satire. Good show.

There are so many things wrong with this post (and you, quite frankly), that I hardly know where to begin. Goth chicks? Do you know anything about music...scratch that...do you know anything about the world beyond your keyboard? There's a large difference between metal music that is jazz and classically influenced than some mindless black or goth metal. Also...there's an even larger difference between progressive metal and the fucking Knack; the fact that they can play in something other than straight 4/4 or 3/4 time, for instance.

Generimetal? Again with the: me laughing at you. Did you even bother to read the links, let alone click them? Shawn Lane is a fusion jazz guitarist, and a fucking legend at that.

The Knack...

Hell, this is the internet, dammit; stop taking everything so seriously. This thread was supposed to be about the good old titles that haven't gotten respect in a few decades or so, not about how big our ego penises (penisii?) are; so on that note, let's return to just what the hell the topic was in the first place. Jack, your little snide, asinine comments aren't helping whatsoever, and neither are they satirically appropriate, so it's my advice you just stop right now and focus on roleplaying until you learn how to speak OOC'ly.

that I hardly know where to begin. Goth chicks? Do you know anything about music...scratch that...do you know anything about the world beyond your keyboard?

Apparently I have stumbled ignorantly and impudently into an area of which you are an expert. I defer to you and your enlightened view of what is appropriate music to get fat goth chicks to put out to.

Also...there's an even larger difference between progressive metal and the fucking Knack; the fact that they can play in something other than straight 4/4 or 3/4 time, for instance.

"There's a large difference between dorkcore and aspergerstep! One goes chugga chugga chugga and the other goes reen reen reen! The fact that they're both artistically bankrupt regardless of the fact that their players are autistic virtuosos with huge production values is irrelevant because it's as musically entertaining as watching the world's most skilled sculptor carve a statue of a Downsie out of white gold!"

Generimetal? Again with the: me laughing at you.

Again with the: using inflections that make you look like an even bigger shemarie than you are. Chugga chugga chugga, reen reen reen, it's all awful and anybody that doesn't have a beard growing on the middle of their neck or autism will tell you the same thing.

Yes. And frankly, how appropriate.
Jack, I've tried offering you advice. So have others, in their own ways. We've dropped hints, and even less subtle bombs upon you in an attempt to perhaps fit you somewhere into the Althanian community in some way, but in your arrogant youth you continue on blissfully unaware of just how deep your rabbit hole is going.
I'll warn you once more, but it's probably too late; continue on like this, and no one, not even your peers (whoever they may be) will want to roleplay with you, and eventually you will leave the site and come back with an anonymous account to try and redeem yourself. You can choose to believe me or not; I personally would like to see you try and stay, but only you can fix your own damages.

EDIT: Thank god someone is.
I absolutely love Billy Joel. He's a rock icon. My favorite song by him has to be "Big Shot".

You have a chat room for random conversations and many people have posted their contact information to talk in private. Spam again and you'll be made miserable.

To everyone else: what the hell is your favorite classic music?

Whipping Post - The Allman Brothers

I really liked the entry of Riders of the Storm by the Doors whomever posted it here. So, I'm going to counter it with another well known favorite by the Doors;

Roadhouse Blues - The Doors

Maybe I can provoke you into giving me another good song from this era. I love old blues/jazz, and I've especially begun to appreciate it from the 60s/70s era.

To try to get this thread back on track, I was wondering if anyone was a fan of Billy Joel?

You know, I recently stumbled across the song New York State of Mind by him and absolutely fell in love with it. I had never really heard any of his music, but then I listened to A classic version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZh8YjbDiVk) and listened again and again. Helps that I recently moved to Brooklyn (May).

PS The Sax solo is beast mode IMO

Mmm... I kinda like these guys though (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ron17xFNBf0), but they're pretty recent, I think.

You should check out Zachariah and the Lobos Riders, they are a sort of Country/blues band I stumbled onto recently. However, I am struggling to find many songs.

Anyone who's a Zombie film fan should check out Dead and Breakfast, they do the soundtrack to that, this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq3l5yVWWX0&feature=related) I find it hillariously tounge in cheek.

A couple of similar sounds:

Creedence Clearwater Revival with Who'll stop the Rain, Proud Mary, Fourtunate Son (love this one), Bad Moon Rising and Looking out my Back Door.

Johnny Cash, Folsom Prison Blues, A Boy named Sue, Ring of Fire and Walk the Line (as well as the newer ones When The Man Comes Around (from the intro to the Dawn of the Dead re-make) and Hurt)

And my entry to classic songs, although nowhere as rocky as other peoples:
Lewis Armstrong - A Kiss to Build a Dream On (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDgncPD0bew&feature=fvst). It might also appeal to any Original Fallout players.

Creedence isn't bad. And I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan, though I really like his darker, more morose songs such as Further Up the Road, The Number Thirteen, and his covers of Hurt and The Mercy Seat. But, over all, there are very few of his songs that I don't like.

I also watched House of the Rising Sun a couple of times and checked out the singer's bio, Eric Burdon. The man lived a crazy life. He was married and divorced at least twice, and his second marriage was with a german woman, Rosie Marks, who he eventually had a daughter with. Though they eventually got divorced, it got really ugly with fights over child custody. Apparently in the late 70s after their divorce (must have been the same year), Marks went to his house in California and burnt it down.

Talk about a woman scorned.

Crisis averted. Found the ignore button. On that note, your link makes me want to bust out my copy of the NES game and see if it still works.

This must be one of those things they call adult childhood memories...
I honestly have no clue what that cartoon is, but If I'd have to venture a guess I'd say its your version of...that god awful cartoon adventure time?
which is really random

Godhand, you're teetering close to the edge. I don't care whether your insults are laced with sarcasm or hard honesty. Calling people "tin-eared homos" and "irredeemable retards" is not acceptable on this site. Take the whole troll brigade with you. One more incident of flaming (sarcasm is obviously acceptable) and you're gone permanently.

You've caught me at a time where not only am I tired in general, but tired of fighting for you all specifically. I could sit here and talk about how charged, intelligent discussion, no matter how heated or barbed it is, is the reason people come to forums. I could talk about how I haven't broken either of my two personal, cardinal rules (1. It has to be funny, and 2. If it's not funny, it has to be righteous) which are the ONLY things keeping me from becoming a monstrous terror on this site. I could talk about how the free exchange of ideas and viewpoints, rough edges and all, is the whole fucking point of the internet, but I'm not going to bring up any of that shit, and do you know why? It's because at this point, I figure you people are beyond help.

I'm just going to keep doing what I've always done and beyond that, maybe you can give me a heads up when you're going to permaban me for being 'rude' in OOC forums out of respect for the ten fucking years I've put into this site and character.

Other than that, fuck the police, fight the power, by any means necessary, no blood for oil, and so on etc.

P.S. You geeks don't even know what trolling is. I defend my points of view and steamroll idiots when they get uppity; that's not trolling. Trolling is posting intentional logical fallacies for the express purpose of getting people riled u-ugh, what's the fucking use. I'm out.
