View Full Version : The worst parts of the holidays...

The holidays are upon us and I thought I'd actually attempt to engage the site in some civilized, intelligent conversation. For the most part we all love the winter holidays. But what about the parts we hate? What don't you like about the holidays?

For example, I live in Texas. Contrary to popular belief it actually gets cold in Texas. But not the good type of cold, its the not cold enough to snow so we can get a day off from school cold. It drops below freezing, it just never rains. Texas is the troll state when it comes to the weather.

What do you guys dislike about the Winter? Do you not like the in-laws? shopping? Zapping your brains out putting the lights up?

Texas is massive and there are tons of different climates there. My home town actually got a bunch of snow today. That is part of the reason I choose to live in southern Alabama, though our weather lately has been unnaturally cold. I miss my flip-flops and the beach!

My least favorite thing about the holidays is the attitude everyone seems to develop. What ever happened to Christmas cheer? Other than that the holidays are awesome! My store only closes 5 days a year, so to be able to relax and enjoy the day with my kids with no managers calling me and freaking out about something is great.

I'm not fond of the weather, and I'm not fond of the crowds. I'm really not fond of the final exams that come before winter break.

But yeah, I'm not a 'cold weather' person. I don't ski or snowboard, so to me a big snowstorm just means shoveling out the driveway. I want to move to the Carolinas as soon as possible.

what do i hate about the holidays? Shopping crowds.. and that's about it.

I lived in Texas for a year (Killeen). HATED it. The only time it actually got cold enough to freeze was over Thanksgiving break, and even then it did little more than freeze standing water from a recent rain storm.

You want cold? Try living in Alaska. Right now, the daily high is 20 some-odd degrees. For you, two-inches of snow means a snow day. Here, it has to snow like 18 inches OVERNIGHT to maybe get a snow day. And even then, it'll only be one day to allow the plows time to clear the bus routes.

In short, I dun wanna hear ya'll's complaining about cold :p while 32*F is freezing, up here, right now, 32* would be considered "warm" :p

Its currently summer where I am, but a really crappy summer where its hot and sunny for one day, then rains and is uncomfortable humid for three, then cold for two. If we are really unlucky, it'll be all three in one day *sigh*.

I was supposed to go to a friends for some pool fun today, but it got rainy instead. We've been getting a few flash floods recently too, but nothing as bad as outside the city. At least its better than this time last year when we had bushfires, we had little rain for a few months and a lot of grass (our native grass is very different to normal lawn grass), dryed out, then fires swept through the outlying towns, quite a few people died, whole towns burned to the ground. The massive smoke cloud was pushed back across the city and we had a red sun for most of a week, it was creepy. No one expected it to get so bad so fast. So yeah, guess I can't really complain about the weather at the moment :p

Anyway, the thing I really hate about the holidays is not having enough money to go away somewhere. Stupid education, cost me money will you.

So what does Sei hate about the holidays?

Nothing. Christmas Crowds are awesome to watch (so long as you're not trying to buy something yourself), I normally prefer cold to warm, but both are good in my book, And not having money for gifts means improv-ing something more heartfelt.

So yeah, there's really nothing I don't like about the holidays.

Wait, take that back. Josh Groban's rendition of 'O Holy Night' fills me with rage, but it's usually followed by the Grinch song, so I'm okay.

The increased sense of self deservation north americans get this time of year. "Because it's christmas" is an excuse to do basically anything you want, it seems. When I ask my family members not to buy me (or each other) presents made in sweat shops, I get asked where my holiday spirit is. And I say, are you fucking kidding me? And they hold up their hands and go hey, hey, it's christmas. I just want to have a good time. And then I go outside punch a tree smoke a joint and disappear and everyone (presumably) resumes a holiday of being ignorant assholes.

I am in love with the weather all year round though. Right now it is a BLIZZARD outside my window. Some days it gets so col your breath freezes, but who cares?

I agree about the crowds. I don't mind lots of people so much as I do that they all move at different paces and you're at the mercy of the slow-moving groups who move three-file or four-file down the hallways. In normal times I can just pass them, but at Christmas time...

Also, this may be a uniquely Canadian thing, but we seem to go through periods of political hypercorrectness where people act like it's wrong to say "Merry Christmas" because you're somehow ignoring the other holidays, which is obviously not the case. Hell, there was one time when people tried to ban Christmas trees, and another (or maybe it was the same time, I can't remember) where they wanted to rename them as "Holiday Trees." How silly.

I don't know what I dislike about the holidays. I generally find it comforting to acknowledge and partake in traditions and spend time with my family. Which is, after all, what the holidays are for. At least from what I see. Perhaps it could be the ignorance portrayed by people unwilling to acknowledge tradition and refuse them on the grounds of petty reasoning. There's more to the giving of gifts and sharing the holidays then insatiable consumerism and blind observance to Christ. But, far be it for me to respect and show an appreciation for the traditions of where I came from and how I grew up.

Anyway, I dislike living where its cold. I grew up with a lot of winters under my belt and I'm growing tired of it, at least in Ohio. Probably going to move south eventually and come up North on my terms instead of being stuck in the land of grey and death with a fifty percent chance of raining misery today, tomorrow and six months after that.

I'm not a fan of the cold that comes with this time of the year, and neither is my car.

The only other thing I hate about this time of the year is that's when Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time" starts playing every other hour on the radio. That song is cancer to my ears. Worst Christmas song ever.

One extra thing I hate about the holiday, people start it too fucking early! No joke I was walking into home depot to help my dad get supplies for a fence and looked to me left. They were selling fake Christmas trees BEFORE Halloween. Then on our drive back some dick had already put his Christmas lights up. You could tell they were Christmas lights because of the reed and green and the Christmas tree on his window. I was tempted to go back there later and egg his house....

Also, any Christmas song not done by the trans-Siberian orchestra is cancer to my ears.

I hate the expectations, the commercialism, the annoying music that plays every year, the dry skin that cracks and bleeds, the layers of clothes that hide the bodies of beautiful women, the buffeting wind, the inability to really do anything outside - like relax on a bench in a park or go exploring in the city, people having finals, and probably other things.

I actually hate holidays.

Quoted for truth, minus the part about hating the holidays. I guess its kind of a trade, gifts for.. a shit ton of problems...

Where I come from, those are called brothels. Also, what kinda fence supplies were you planning to buy -there-?! :P

I worked at home depot. They start setting up for Christmas immediately before black friday in order to maximize profit. That's usually what retail revolves around, too. They make most of their revenue on black friday and then get by with sales and other things the rest of the year, but BF is definitely their cash cow.

Thankfully I never had to work in the mornings for that. I don't mind helping customers. I do mind having to break up fights among hordes of them.

Silly Sei, a hoes is a garden tool, we needed them to clear away weeds XD

Thank you for pointing out the lack of an M, apparently one letter makes a big difference.

I hate that Buffy had seven seasons and Firefly is fourteen episodes long. It's not directly related to the Holidays, but I'm sadder for it.

I'm incredibly apathetic to the Holidays. I wasn't aware they were coming up until I saw this thread. And then the Christmas music on the ride back. And then the lights I found in my home.

I don't like figuring out what to get for my family members. Not because I don't want to get them anything, but rather, no one ever wants anything, but everyone always expects something.

And then you have my grandparents, who get pissed at you if you get them anything, or even ask if they want anything.

Personally, this year I am dreading encountering my former in-laws. For many reasons, but I'd rather not mention them.

I'm also not sure if my family will be doing anything this christmas. My grandmother had two surgeries recently and we may just skip christmas this year so she can recover.
