View Full Version : Althanas 3.0 Roll-Out Tournament

I’ve always thought that tournaments were one of the coolest things about Althanas. Understanding that they’re had to setup and hard to run, I can see why they’re not used more often than they are though. The roll-out of Althanas 3.0 seems like the perfect time to have one however, one of those special occasion type things.

Does anyone else think this is a good idea, and if so, what type of tournament would you like to see?

What I would like to see for the Althanas 3.0 Roll-Out Tournament would be a quest-based tournament rather than a battle-based one. Althanas is, after all, supposed to be more about quest writing than it is about battles. Isn’t it?

Here’s how I would run it:

You get 12 people to sign up and split them up randomly into three groups.
There are three rounds to the quest-tournament and each round follows the same style: A beginning and an end goal with several plot points in between.

Round 1: Team wakes up at the bottom of a mountain at night. At the top of the mountain is a castle to it. In your way are a wide, deep chasm; a falling rock avalanche; and a pack of wild predators.

Round 2: New teams wake up just outside the castle’s fence. They have to find a way to get into the castle itself. In your way are the 20 foot high razor-wire covered fence around the courtyard; a pack of trained guards (people or animals); and finally the intricate locks on the castle’s heavy doors.

Round 3: You wake up along inside the castle. You have to find your way to the treasure chamber at the castle’s center. In your way are the castle’s elite guards; complex traps; and magical warding.

You give the teams the requirements for the first round of the tournament and each team has two-weeks (one-week or whatever) to write a quest that goes from start to finish and incorporates the plot points however they see fit. All teams use the same scenario and the best two advance to the second round.

For the second round, you reshuffle the remaining 8 people into four groups of 2 and then give them the requirements for the second round. Like the first, they have a set amount of time to finish the plot as they see fit and then the top two teams advance to the third round.

Give the remaining 4 players the requirements for the third round, which they have to write as a solo in the set amount of time. Each of the top 4 gets a prize, but the overall winner gets a SUPER PRIZE. (Since Letho’s officially retired maybe he’d put up his adamantine bastard sword?)

Doing it this way would make it possible for a level 0 to win the tournament and it promotes various types of quest writing (group, partner, and solo) as well as creativity, originality, and problem solving. Also, the judge wouldn’t have to judge every tournament member’s overall score, which would cut down on the time required to finish judging it.

Thoughts?

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

Yet, on the other hand, I gave Dirks this exact same idea (or very close to) shortly after ToC (Tournament of Champions) and he didn't want to do it based on what you said in the first paragraph.

It doesn't make sense, it'd take less work (like you said) PLUS it would be beneficial for any level so why not Max hmmmmm?

I definitely would like to see a quest tournament ... but if we are going to have a tournament, and we better, I suggest a solo quest tournament because having teams or a partner etc ... doesn't seem to work nearly as well as solo, it just doesn't happen.

Experience and gold should also be prizes in my opinion.

:D

Maybe Max will listen this time *crosses fingers*

EDIT:

I HIGHLY recommend having this quest tournament in March for several reasons:

1:.) This site is not fully developed yet

2:.) Not all bugs are fixed and not all options (like the market) are available

3:.) A few more members added to the mix will help

4:.) Not all forums are completed

5:.) It takes awhile to setup and the tournament, rules, rubric etc. and to register yada yada yada

6:.) I'm going on vacation to Florida for most of February and wouldn't be able to participate and win :p

Really? I could have sworn we did a quest tournament once. Anyway, it sounds like fun, though the initial rounds might take a bit longer to get through because it's tough to get an entire quest done from start to finish with so many people in so little time. (Or maybe that's just been my experience :p)

Wasn't Adventurer's Crown a quest tournament? It was so long ago and I was a bit noobish then so I didn't join, but it looked like fun. I wouldn't mind seeing a quest tournament either.

Yes, it was. I didn't take part in that one becuase Sighter made it way to complicated for my tastes.

I've asked Max about this, but due to the fact that during the Cell, hardly any regions got posted in, we'd rather wait and let the Boss/Bounty/Wager features take priority for a while.

Yes, I love tournaments!

However, a quest tournament has never been finished on Althanas. First, the AH tournament (it got renamed Alerar's Hunter later, I cannot recall the original name) did not finish. Then two iterations of the Adventurer's Crown did not finish. When three tournaments of the same type do not finish, it makes me weary of whether to do them again. Now, Revenant's idea doesn't incorporate GMs, which is good. Maybe if it got fleshed out more it would put my concerns to bed.

Further, as Sei told you, I'm also concerned about activity.

That, in and of itself, could take months with the tumbleweed blowing/crickets chirping/crows cawking activity in it (the entire site actually).

:(

Arn't we all? Yet, on the other hand, what's the harm in setting it up in March? What's the worst that could happen? People not posting? They are doing that anyway, you might as well. It might boost the 4 active members (sarcastic exaggeration don't take it literally) activity on the site!
