View Full Version : Time to Get Spendy

Marcus Book slowed his pace as he rounded a corner and entered the dwarven section of the bazaar. Behind him and to the left he could still hear the merchants from Fallien calling out to passersby in their throaty, lyrical language. He remembered the scent of spices carried on the wind, but now the air was heavy with smoke and the thankfully distant odor of the dwarven tanneries.

The young paladin checked his coin purse one last time. He did not have money of his own, of course, but his order sometimes granted allowances to squires in situations like this. He needed equipment and was not yet a blooded knight, so simply visiting the local quartermaster was out of the question. No, he would need to purchase his arms and armor like anybody else. And Marcus Book wanted the best, which meant finding dwarven craftsmen.

He was unaccustomed to wandering the bazaar without his mentor, but not entirely intimidated by the process. He had been sent to purchase goods and equipment for others in the past, and had some experience in the art of haggling and a basic understanding of business, but it was a strange sensation to walk the streets with money he was to spend on himself. He steered toward a stout building connected to an open smithy first, and mindfully bowed his head as he stepped through the door frame.

Book was by no means a tall man, but he immediately felt confined in the dwarven-built shop. The ceiling was only a few inches overhead, and the space was cave-like – solely illuminated by a small fire in the far corner. The architecture, however, was admirably sturdy and, in a way, cozy.

After considering the room itself, Marcus began looking over the merchandise. He did not yet see a shop keep, but he figured the owners did not have to concern themselves with thieves: the goods here were heavy and loud, it would be difficult to grab anything and run and hope to get far without at least being spotted. He approached a shield hung from a hook on the wall to his left, taking it as an example. It was a large, round wooden affair reinforced with and rimmed in metal, and he turned the back of his hand to it and tapped his fingernail against the glinting material along the rim.

“Steel?” he said, turning around as he heard heavy footfalls approaching from behind.

"How'd yeh noo mah name, young'n?" The dwarf said, his bearded features twisted in confusion. "That's me rightly anough, Gerard Steele, Blacksmith and... Oh!" The shopkeeper exploded, realising his folly. "Silly ol' Gerard, happens t'me more often than yeh'd think lad."

With an appraising eye the dwarf took the shield from his customer, clasped it by the arm-straps and assumed a mock fighter's stance.

"Me last apprentice made this piece the night afore I graduated 'im. That's steel on the rim, an steel studs holdin' the layers of rywan together. Stout wood, rywan, if on the heavy side. Yeh looks like a stout man though, I'm sure yeh could manage it." The dwarf handed the shield back to the customer and crossed his arms over his heavy forge vest. "I suppose I could let this beaut go for 250 gold pieces."

Shield is made from rywan and steel, of average human craftsmanship.

Somehow I completely missed that you replied here, Numbers, and subsequently forgot I ever posted. I has a dumb, sorry. I figure rather than start a new thread, I'll just use this one. That may mean the current bazaar mod will need to take over, I dunno.

Marcus grinned hardly. If truth be told, he always liked dwarves. They had an easy confidence to them, an unassuming charisma, and Gerard Steele struck Book has being no different from the other dwarves he’d met.

“Gerard Steele,” he said, tasting the words and nodding his approval as he considered the shield and its price. “It’s a strong name. Mine is Marcus Book.”

He held the shield in one hand, and shook the smith’s hand with the other.

“Two-fifty,” he muttered to himself after that, pulling firmly at the arm-straps. When he was satisfied with the thing’s workmanship, he nodded and began to accept.

In the middle of his breath, though, Marcus performed what must have been the most prominent double-take Gerard Steele had ever seen. Dazedly, he handed the shield back to its owner as if he could no longer see it, and patted the smith on the shoulder as he walked past him. “Gerard,” he said, “what is that?”

That was a large, single-bladed, long-bearded battle axe mounted proudly near the entrance to the forge. The head was delyn, gleaming black and deep, deep crimson, and the blade looked like to split an eyelash. Certainly it had been forged with a dwarf’s stout frame in mind, heavy and impressive, with strips of leather wrapped around the grip and midway up the haft.

Book was no smith, but as he considered the banding and mottling of the axe-head – flowing in wavy patterns and reflecting red so that it reminded of running blood – he knew this was no common weapon. He turned and eyed Gerard, wondering if this could be a masterwork, but no. He’d purposely avoided the proudest of establishments and those that boasted the smiths of noble pedigree. Though perhaps not one of the very best weapons of its kind, it was surely better than most, and well above the average metalwork.

This transaction will conclude without the roleplaying normally involved in a Bazaar thread, as discussed via aim.

Amen receives:
- A two-handed, single-bladed and well balanced battle axe of masterwork quality. The head is made of Kachuck Delyn, giving it enhanced protection from physical damage and a slight resistance to magical damage. Needless to say, but this axe won't be needing a thorough grinding anytime soon. Also, the haft of the axe is made from Nihon Redwood. The final cost of this axe is 750 gold pieces.

Any further description details can be discussed with me at your next update. You better put this axe to good use in the Serenti in the first round, sucka.
