Ventura

Basic Character Traits
Name: Stephanie Ventura Black
Race: half-human, half-Siren
Age: 21
Height: 5’5”
Weight: 110 lbs.
Hair Colour: dark chocolate brown
Eye Colour: hazel
Occupation: aspiring journalist
Physical and Personality Characteristics
Appearance:
Ventura is a regular girl. Pretty, but not jaw-droppingly beautiful. Slim, but no stranger to a little fat here and there. She’s short, feminine and just sartorially-enslaved as any other female student at the Scara Brae University. She has wavy, chocolate-coloured hair flowing past her shoulders, usually in a bun. Her eyes are a simple hazel. She has a decent amount of clothes and she does have some pretty impressive breasts, but that isn’t what sets her apart from the rest of her regular-chested peers.
Despite being only half-Siren, Ventura displays what makes Sirens so physically unique. Sirens look almost exactly like humans. If they didn’t sit around naked, with their hair or some ocean flora hiding their treasures, they could easily pass off as human. Except for the angelic wings sprouting from the sides of their heads. And this is what Ventura has: two, healthy-looking brown-black Siren wings. She’s hardly discriminated because of them; they add to her popularity of being the only teenage Siren in the city.
Personality:
Ventura is a feisty, take-no-prisoners aspiring journalist. She was valedictorian of her university class, with a major in journalis and a minor in Commonspeak. Though she knows her popularity won’t get her far in life, she’s used it to advance her budding career. Through her connections, she acquired interning experience with the Scara Brae Star and the Valeena Monthly. She also works as a full-time scribe and a part-time nurse at the Dajas Pagoda, a job she surprisingly enjoys despite the blood and gore. As well, she’s freelancing for a handful of other publications, but nothing fulfilling or eventful.
She’s a huge follower of Althanian fashion (evident by her expensive closet), but her real journalistic passion is news – hard news, breaking news, any news that’s exciting and conflict-driven. Ventura is also very respectful towards her parents, as she should be since they paid for her schooling. She would never admit it, but she adores her little brother, even if their interactions are peppered with insults and annoyances. But she’s on her way to a budding career and she’s willing to relentlessly pursue it.
Character History
Family Members
Carlos Adamo Black, human father, 50 years old.
Ninamari of the Carnation Pearl tribe, Siren mother, 46 years young.
Elias Zachary Black, annoying little brother, 15 years old.
Born and raised in Scara Brae city, Ventura Black is much like any other privileged child living in Althanas. She went to decent schools, got decent grades, lived an easy life. Her dad is a high-ranking Scara Brae official, making a very good sum of money a year. Her mother is a housewife, and a Siren (she fell in love with a human and left her tribe, who she still sees from time to time, so they didn’t separate on bad terms). She takes care of the house and her children. The Blacks live a very conservative lifestyle.
When she entered Scara Brae University, she developed a love for reporting and journalism. Ventura breezed through her courses. During her third year of university, she got an oppurtunity to intern for the Scara Brae Star, which proved to be a very uneventful, technical job. All she ever did was sit at a table and edit gramatical mistakes. During her fourth and final year, she moved to a small town near Valeena for three months, interning for the Valeena Monthly. It was definitely a soul-searching experience, as it was her first time living by herself. She also wrote a handful of high-profile stories (the abandoned baby Kraken in Valeena Lake, a drug bust in the Windlacer Mountains, an interview with dragon hunter Sir Hechatonchier). Her burning desire to work for an exciting news publication blossomed and grew at the Valeena Monthly.
A year after graduation, Ventura is still in the tormented year of post-university. She works at the Dajas Pagoda as a scribe and a part-time nurse, but her desire to get back out there and become a journalist is burning brighter and stronger. Though she’s freelancing for a couple of Scara Brae publications (her last story was a feature on the dingy MacMartin’s, a local pub), Ventura longs to see the world. There might be a couple of stories worth telling out there.
Character Skills
Expert Literacy
Ventura has expert grasp of the Commonspeak language, both written and verbal. She went to school for it, graduated with highest honours. She should know a thing or two about what she learned. If she really wanted to, she could probably teach the language.
Expert Journalism
As well as being a good Commonspeak communicator, Ventura has a way of uncovering the truth. Whether the truth is about a new bartering law (page nine of the Scara Brae Star, wholly uninteresting) or a monstrous baby Kraken abandoned at Valeena Lake (breaking news for the Valeena Monthly, complete with paintings!), Ventura will relentlessly pursue it. It’s her job.
First Aid
Working as a part-time nurse at the Dajas Pagoda has given Ventura some good knowledge of first aid. What she knows is fairly basic, how to bandage an arm to prevent infection, how to revive a drowned person, but it’s still invaluable knowledge.
Character Abilities
Flirtation
A good sidekick skill for her journalism is putting flirtation to good use. Many fall head over heels for her. She just has to show some cleavage and be coy. Ventura doesn’t know that part of her Siren-ness is the natural attention of men, and women that bat for the other team. To her credit, her flirtation technique is quite good. Her Siren genes just seal the deal – too bad she doesn’t sleep with her informators. (doesn't work on persons above her level, those with high will power, or those with partners)
Silence
Being half-Siren gives her a few magical perks. Ventura practices her silence spell often on her little brother, as he’s a fairly easy target. Ventura has also silenced herself, like her footsteps or her screaming. But so far, it’s only worked on her brother and herself. She’s attempted it on her father, and it’s worked only a handful of times. Her mother is immune, likely because a Siren cannot silence another Siren. (only works twice a day, for ten minutes at the most, but the time varies depending on how stressed she is casting the spell, also only works on children, small animals or objects, and herself)
