View Full Version : What is the literacy rate for PC characters?

Well, I've been reading the Althanas Almanac and acording to it, with the exception of Raiaera, the literacy rates average about >50% of the population. I know that includes NPC characters, but is/are your character(s) able to read and write?
I have one character out of three who can't read or write, but he's entirely blind...
Yari Rafanas

His handwriting is pretty bad, but yeah, Rafanas can read and write.
Never thought about it, but Law's upbringing was as a dramatist. Plays, history, poetry, and song are things he would have as part of his knowledge base, its hard to imagine literacy not being part of his development.

Azza can read and writes... sort of. Basic level of what we would consider an elementary level in our world. Handwriting is more akin to scribbling. Tradespeak/common only at the moment.
Nin can read on decent level, but much less than the typical educated man/woman. Writing is neat, having some practice in calligraphy art forms. Problem is, Nin can only do so in Fox tongue. His grasp of tradespeak/common and Salvarian is passable.
Mags can read and... type. His writing is more of a scrawl, but he can read and understand rather complex/scientific terminology. Universal Script only (he's from... a distant future not from Althanas), and... so, he can't actually read or write anything related to Althanas! :D!

In Corone I've always assumed that most of the upper class kids would have tutors that teach them all kinds of shit (reflected in Jake Narmolanya), that' there might be some public or semi-private schooling for the middle and lower classes, but mostly parents would either have the knowledge and pass it on, or not. But there are libraries and the like, so there's always opportunities to learn.
But player charcters.. only a few I can think of don't know how to read/write.

Indeed. Most player characters, unless they are exceptionally stupid or have some other defect (blindness, etc.), you'll find are able to read and write. Including mine.

Talen couldn't when I first made him, he learnt (albeit badly) after joining the Ixian Knights. He can't spell very well though, and tends to used phonetic spelling. He can read alright though.
EDIT: Talen grew up on the street, so it made sense considering he never went to school, or had parents.

All of my characters can read/write common with ease with the one exception of Beauty. She can't read or write or even count accurately past 10. It's honestly not something i ever really thought about before though.

Yeah most of my characters can; but now that you mention the literacy rate throughout Althanas, I think it should be a more reflected and spoken about topic.

If that is so, why is the literacy rate in Coroné so low?

Sei, and any Mystic for that matter (Which aren't reflected in the almanac, racists!) are able to read and write, a few of them are able to do so in different languages. Not only this, but as reflected with Talen, Sei tries to help his IK by employing tutors to help with the literacy rate. I just made that last part up, but now it sounds good so it's official :P.
Trap Master was born lower class, but managed to bring himself up from nothing and is able to read and write.
Actually, one of Play Back's major weaknesses is not being able to read or write. He's completely illterate. And has full eyesight.
Hsa can read a few words, but his Chibidex is helping him learn more.
I think that's it for now.

To be honest, a lot of the stuff in the Almanac is really old and some of it was, IIRC, developed in vacuum (i.e., without the rest of the Althanian world being fleshed out yet). It's good for a general guide but I personally think some of it might need updating. But a fair amount of Corone's population does live away from major cities where literacy is probably not a significant concern. If you live in a city and have enough money (and time/inclination), the opportunities are there, but otherwise it's just not a big concern.
Anyway, Elrundir is obviously able to read and write. He's part of that aforementioned high literacy rate in Raiaera, but also well-educated beyond that.
Christina is fully literate as well. She had an upper-class upbringing and well-off parents, so there was no question of it.

Rhiannon came from our Earth as an American, so she'd be excellent at reading and writing.. Seeing her education levels were college and managed very good grades.
